nothing really happened with my dad's side.. they are just southern Missouri folks... my uncle (the youngest of the 12 children) died about 1 week ago.... only 4 are left out of 12... its really sad too.. my oldest uncle (3rd born) is still alive and had to see the younger siblings suffer thru cancer and heart disease....

Robert "Bob" Ford was a member of the James Gang. its strange to see them talk about an area they were at called "Blue Cut", which is where they robbed a train... Blue Cut is now called "Blue Ridge" which is a small township within Independence Missouri.....

He loved the 2 so far... ."Pretty in Pink" and "The Girl with the Pearl Earring".. I think the movies based on the books by Janette Oke will get him good...

I grew up with parents who watched westerns and I watched western tv shows as well (in reruns)... Robert Conrad and James Gardner were hot! when they were young... I've been pouring over the internet looking for wedding gift suggestions and I am coming up with nada.

I understand that the idea used to be to get gifts for the new couple that would help them set up their home. That's rarely the case anymore though and certainly not the case with my dad. With all his stuff and all her stuff the last thing in the world they are going to need is something for their house.

If it were just my dad I would have no problem getting him something but this needs to be something for the both of them.

What to get?

I'm not, actually, but it's my thing. Had I known that it was written by Julian Fellowes I'd have given it a chance and watched it from the start. It started after the BBC announced they were remaking Upstairs, Downstairs for a three part Christmas special. It felt like a mockbuster and like they were treading on the BBC's territory. Usually that would've been poor but, as I said, had I know Fellowes was involved I'd have tried it.

Have you ever seen Upstairs, Downstairs?

I'm not, actually, but it's my thing. Had I known that it was written by Julian Fellowes I'd have given it a chance and watched it from the start. It started after the BBC announced they were remaking Upstairs, Downstairs for a three part Christmas special. It felt like a mockbuster and like they were treading on the BBC's territory. Usually that would've been poor but, as I said, had I know Fellowes was involved I'd have tried it.

Have you ever seen Upstairs, Downstairs?

The Original from back in the 70's....

actually I got a gift today from the girl who always sits beside me at work... its always hot in the call center and I have problems breathing.... she bought me a portable fan about 5 inches in height... very nice thing to do.... and it works very good for being so small.

Aw, that's really sweet.

So I'm set on the duvet and cashmere throw idea. Tim also thought it was a good idea and his name will be attached to it as well (he will be going with me) so all I have left to do is pick them out and send them to Ohio. I picked out a really nice frame today too. That's off my plate. Thanks, Deadite.

Just a random question to those people who go to support groups:

What do you talk about there? How does it exactly work? Is it like in the movies where everyone is sitting in a circle and everyone talks about what they've been through during the week?

I'm just curious, because I don't think it's something that's regularly or casually being done in my country.

Godoggo
07-11-14, 11:12 AM
Pretty much. The support group will be focused on whatever issue you are dealing with. For example, I go to one because of my clinical depression. People are encouraged to talk about any issues, concerns or conflicts they are dealing with related to whatever that particular support group focuses on. Even if someone doesn't feel like talking they are encouraged to go and listen. Yes, we do sit in a circle. :) I've been to some that were to big to sit in a circle so you have to sit like your in a classroom. I don't like those because you either go to the front and speak or speak from your seat so everyone turns around and looks at you. :o

There are a myriad of reasons why it is important to go to support group even the ones that I don't like so much. One reason is that it is important to connect with people who are going through the same things you are going through. It is important for someone like myself who is having a good deal amount of success coping with and maintaining my "issues" to offer support to others as others did for me.

It is also important to go to keep yourself grounded and to not allow yourself to think yourself "cured". Even though I no longer take medication, I do have to live my life in a way that will help me manage. When I have a really good stretch it's easy for me to forget I have depression and may allow myself to develop bad eating and sleeping habits, not exercise properly, over extend myself or do any of the things that may trigger an episode.

It's exactly the same with my other issue. :)

I'm just curious, because I don't think it's something that's regularly or casually being done in my country.

We start with introductions and have a check-in question. Usually it's something stupid, like last week it was "what is your favorite animal" and this week it was "what is your favorite ride at the state fair", but there is a recurring one that happens sometimes which is "what is something good that has happened lately and what is something that could be better".

Then we basically open the table for discussion about what's been happening with everyone, any problems they might be having or questions they have.

That often takes up the whole time, just talking about stuff. But sometimes we will play a game like pictionary or read articles or parts of books about psychosis and whatnot.

If I played pictionary in a support group they would send me to another support group. Let's just say when I play board games, I get called Monica a lot.

We don't really do the question thing either. Not a specific question. A lot of times the person running it will ask someone a question not related to the issue topic to get them talking.

I'm going to suggest we play Scattegories once a month. I'm sure that's therapeutic somehow.

I've been going for about a year and a half.

Hmmm... well, there is this one guy who has come the last three or four weeks who's incredibly weird. He doesn't even sit in the circle, he sits outside of it and just has his head down and mumbles. The first time he seemed to really want to go and one of the heads had to escort him out. He slammed the door. He seems nicer the following groups though. But, he has no filter. He says some really weird things and just acts weird. I remember one of them, we were talking about fireworks, and someone mentioned bottle rockets, and he just blurted out "I HAVE A BOTTLE ROCKET IN MY PANTS!"

Oh yeah, all the time. The first story that comes to mind is this woman came up to me and started talking about her kids. At first, I was just kind of barely listening and then I realized she was telling me horrible ways she disciplined them . I asked her if she was joking and she became furious. That was fun.

Then there was the woman who would just randomly toss in bits about her sex life. The moderator would always say to her, " I don't know how that relates to what you were just saying so let's try to keep focused." That became a running gag amongst us.

There was a man who hit on everyone and kicked out of group for it.

N/A gets a lot of weird ones. The thing with it is that some people get court ordered to attend and have no intention of stopping so they are still really wacked out sometimes.

Elaborate, I am genuinely interested.

I mean, sure -- when I was a kid, and I saw horror movies, there was lots to be scared about. Because you don't know the world well then and visuals on a screen can be pretty haunting. But now, as an adult, I'm well aware that it's all fake.

The only fear can really come from your emotional investment in the characters and if certain people you like are gonna die or not or something. You can be afraid of their life ending, even if they're fictional. That's the most "scared" I could probably really be by a movie. Maybe something else that appears could unnerve me. Images of dead bodies and such.

But if I want to see that now, I can't say I'm really watching it to be "scared." I might be watching it... to expose myself to something dark and upsetting.

I don't know. I think it's probably like dreams and nightmares. I think if you have a bad dream, some part of you might actually be deciding to expose yourself to the dream because it unleashes an emotional reaction you need. Have you ever had a weird or upsetting or very powerful dream and after you had it, you kinda felt... glad you had it? I have thought that and I think the case may be the same with movies -- any movies, really. I think we seek out things we desire to experience. I don't feel like I'm actually seeking out horror movies to be scared. But, who knows? Maybe on some level I am.

I don't know if I'm making any sense, but that's what's coming out of me.

That's why I love horror, because I am very easily scared. It always perplexes me when people love horror but it doesn't scare them at all. That's what makes it great for me. I don't know why but I've always found being scared fun. If I'm watching a horror movie and I don't need to keep my blanket up near my face, to me it's failed completely. I've said this a million times on this forum but I was a wreck after watching Ring and very suspicious of my television.

Seven bores me. I think I've only watched that once or twice. I've never felt a strong need to watch it again. Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey as the killer.

The ending is a huge downer. Maybe that's a strong reason why I don't like it. The whole feel of that movie is damp and depressing to me.

Silence of the Lambs is very good, but not at all scary to me. I like that mainly just for the scenes with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins and they are not scary. The only thing that bothers me, really, with that film is seeing that bloated, dead body of that girl who gets found and they do an autopsy on her. That is gross and disturbing. I don't like autopsy settings. Too close to reality.

Who knows why I love horror. Maybe it's because I grew up with it, maybe it's some other reason.

I love it when it's fun, I love it when it's atmospheric, I love it when it's intelligent. Horror offers a lot of variety that way - you have something like Poultrygeist and then something like The Exorcist.

I HATE roller coasters. They scare me to death.

But when I was watching that video, I was scared seeing the sights that the camera saw on the roller coaster. I literally felt like I was there. I had to remind myself for a moment -- "This is a screen. You're not actually there." But it felt like I was on that roller coaster.

I actually thought to myself that I need to watch more roller coaster videos, too. It's kinda fun to watch them on a screen. It's NOT fun to actually be on them.

We would sit around and talk about the strangest **** in films... they were a cool young couple.... the girl was about 18 yrs old and the guy was in his early 20s.... the girl was friends with my daughter who was about 11 at the time.. we would talk to her at her job... I find Lecter terrifying in SOTL. Demme also does such a good job of creating atmosphere. The scenes with Starling in the prison give me the creeps just thinking about.

I understand watching horror if it scares you but not if it doesn't. Old school horror has one intention and that is to scare you. To me it would be like saying you love comedy but not because it is amusing. It seems like that is the only purpose. I am sure there is a lot of horror that cares about its characters. The truth is I don't want to wade through the stuff I hate to get there. There is plenty for me to watch outside that genre. I have been suckered into countless horror movies with the promise of being different. I am disappointed every time. Saw, Blair Witch, Final Destination, Paranormal Activity, and The Ring. I have been through at least one of them all. Also sat through many Friday The 13th, Nightmare, and Scream movies. None do a thing for me.

Sexy it sounds like you still have an emotional reaction similar to fear when watching horror. I think for a lot of people when they mature they don't have to check the locks in their house anymore but it still gives them that gut fear in the moment.

I find Lecter terrifying in SOTL. Demme also does such a good job of creating atmosphere. The scenes with Starling in the prison give me the creeps just thinking about.

Not me. I find Lecter and Starling too fascinating to really be creeped out by them.

But on the TV show, Hannibal, which I haven't seen much of -- Lecter seems creepier and darker there. Which I'm not sure is right or wrong.

I really don't watch new horror films anymore. I've never seen a Paranormal Activity movie and I don't really care to. I don't really believe in ghosts. I USED to, and the thought of ghosts used to terrify me, but I don't really anymore. So I have no desire for that stuff now.

And most other stuff just looks badly made to me. Times have changed and I don't like the look of most horror out there. But then again, maybe I'm just not exposing myself to good new stuff.

I do still admire the horror movies I grew up with. For some reason, they clicked with me. But now... like when I watch Slumber Party Massacre, as I recently did several times, I admire it for how it was crafted together. That's a really beautiful movie. The director worked on Taxi Driver and could have edited E.T. if she hadn't directed Slumber Party Massacre. You think something called that is crap, but it's really not. It's really a gorgeous looking murder film.

Sexy it sounds like you still have an emotional reaction similar to fear when watching horror. I think for a lot of people when they mature they don't have to check the locks in their house anymore but it still gives them that gut fear in the moment.

Well, there's always something scary that could happen. Life isn't always beautiful.

Not every horror film -- or any film - needs to be looked at to find scary things, though. Or whatever it is you think the film is showcasing strongly. Sometimes a comedy might have a decent story going for it, no matter how much is funny. Sometimes the actors or the characters just speak to you. There's a variety of reasons you could be into something.

I tend to think that a lot of popular stuff is popular not because, as some people will say, the story or the dialogue or whatever... but because of subtle things people may not realize. Like maybe they just like the group of actors in the film or something and relate to them.

When something gets a lot of praise, I am always skeptical of the reasons. It's the same with me and these Asian movies and these foreign films and such. Yes, a movie could be good, but like, if someone's deeply into Asian movies or whatever -- and like here if they're ASSURED that they're the best movies -- I am skeptical of claims about why. I'm inclined to think, "there's something about that person that's got a thing for that type of movie." There's like a psychological theme going on in that person's life that attracts them to this stuff. You could say the same for me and my tastes or anybody's.

Your last sentence hits the nail on the head. I think just as many people try to go against the grain as with it in film circles. The key for me is to try and not think about all that while I am watching. I like to have a gut reaction and then read reviews, discuss, and contemplate. We all can be influenced by outside sources. In the end it does not matter. If I enjoy a film more because someone in my life likes it and it is fun to watch together, I still enjoy it more.

You are right. Hannibal is far darker on the show than in the movies..... which is why I enjoy the show very much.. I never read the books but the tv show is very dark... and gruesome...

Speaking of horror films... one thing I enjoy in films is ones that are based off folklore, fairytales or mythology.... I have searched the internet all over the story of the "Pale Man" and have never been able to find it. I remember hearing of it as a young person but for some reason I cant find the story. I wrote my friend my own version of the story of the Pale Man and Im pretty damn proud of it. I love writing him short stories, my own quick versions of mythology.. he loves hearing them from me.. he considers me a great writer and storyteller..

ah the Pale Man. why cant I find you on the net???? de Toro.. you are master at story telling.... I know the story from "Hellboy 2: the Golden Army".. the story of Nuada and Nuala... its part of Irish Mythology... along with the Golden Army itself.

but I was a wreck after watching Ring and very suspicious of my television.
The Ring or Ringu? The first time I watched Ring (Ringu) it was the early hours of the morning and I was in bed. It was an old 26" tv which was about 4 feet from my face. Then I went to sleep. :D

Who knows why I love horror. Maybe it's because I grew up with it, maybe it's some other reason.
I think is a big reason why I like horror films. As I've said before, the original Dawn Of The Dead is like a comfort film for me. Especially once they get to the mall. I'm completely at ease until the bikers come along and **** everything up. :D

I actually thought to myself that I need to watch more roller coaster videos, too. It's kinda fun to watch them on a screen. It's NOT fun to actually be on them.
There used to be short films of rollercoasters (and other pov stuff) which would be projected onto walls (I once saw on which was a dome and we all laid on the floor while the films were projected onto the ceiling) If you can find something like that, you should give it a go. Not only do you get the feeling, but it's really funny watching people as they get too into it (and it happens to almost everyone at some point in the showing) and they start swaying and staggering about. I can remember a couple of people falling over. For some reason, they didn't look away from the screen. That's how into they must've been.

Not me. I find Lecter and Starling too fascinating to really be creeped out by them.
I'm the same with this. I think of SotL a bit like Good Morning Vietnam. Take out those scenes, as with the radio scenes in GMV, and it's not the same film. Those are the heights. Everything else is kinda meh.

But on the TV show, Hannibal, which I haven't seen much of -- Lecter seems creepier and darker there. Which I'm not sure is right or wrong.
It's definitely darker. You can't see a bloody thing. I stopped watching it episode 1 of Season 2, after it seemed they'd decided to to use light at all.

I really don't watch new horror films anymore.
Me neither. Like you, I've not seen the Paranormal Activity stuff, but I would watch stuff. I just don't get around to it.
I think I'm sick. Been coughing and got da sniffles.
Hope you're feeling a bit better, Mr. Sparkle. I was feeling a bit like that yesterday, but it's a bit better today.

You are right. Hannibal is far darker on the show than in the movies..... which is why I enjoy the show very much
Yeah, that's the reason. ;):D

You should definitely see Shadow Of A Doubt. After Psycho, that's my favourite. The other three you've mentioned aren't too bad, either. I like them more than most of the Hitch biggies.

I agree HK: One of the things I dislike about Hannibal TV show is that there is no light at all, every scene is in the dark and it's annoying. I know it's trying to be stylish but no need for every scene. Watched 4 episodes of season 2 I think, I'll get round to finishing it eventually as I think the show itself is pretty good.
