I haven't gotten to it yet but it's been recommended to me a few times. And seems like the most interesting one out of all the other's you picked.
Meditations is a great read. It's a solid foundation for Stoicism, for those interested in their teachings.. For decision making and dealing with everyday life, there's nothing more indispensable.

Start with Aurelius, then read Seneca. Schopenhauer is also interesting. I was reading him around the same time as Nietzsche and the existentialists. They go hand-in-hand in a weird way.
I was thinking I might go with Meditations, Justin.

We just had an employee quit without giving notice today (she quit via text message, tactful) and we have another person out with pregnancy complications, so except for Sundays (when we're closed) I won't have any days off for the foreseeable future.
On the plus side, I was given a raise today and all this extra work might mean I'll actually have some money come Christmas.

Hmm. Well rap is a big beast (m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8-RmM5py1c). There's so much that I haven't explored that I want to get to before I die. From the examples you've given there, I can tell you can handle some diversity in the recommendations.
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - I have to, by law, recommend this to you. It's a hip-hop classic.
OutKast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
OutKast - Stankonia - both these OutKast albums are great, and I recommend all the albums in between, but these two stand out in my mind.
Death Grips - Exmilitary - Highly recommended because I know you like punk and stuff like punk.
Clipping - Midcity - Noise-rap gangsta-rap awesome
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Why? - Alopecia
I'm sure there is more, but I wanted to give some diverse recommendations.
Spoonie Gee and Big Daddy Kane are a couple of great 80s rappers whose singles are better than their albums, you should check them out if you can get behind that style of rap.

Funny story from back home in Liverpool, there's a topiary version of the Beatles outside our local train station . After Ringo dissed Liverpool saying there's nothing he missed about it, someone cut off his topiary head. They grew it again. Someone cut it off again. They grew it again, they cut it off. They put it on cctv :D

Don't forget Big L-lifestylez ov da poor & dangerous ;)
Crazy Taxi's sh*tty pop-punk soundtrack is reminding me of my embarrassing past and making me nostalgic at the same time.

Some movies are actually better if you watch them alone, and others are better when watched with friends. I like seeing comedies with friends because they're not much fun when you laugh alone, but heavy dramas are better watched alone, with nobody there to bother you.

In theory -- or at least, in my own mind -- it seemed like a good idea. But once you realize not everyone's into the same kind of videos, I felt it just doesn't work like a song tournament does. I mean, the tournament COULD have gone on, but after some complaints, I just didn't have it in me to continue.

It was a good idea. People have different tastes in music too, but those tournaments seem to go okay. For some reason, people were just more critical of videos than they are of songs. People needed to be willing to open up their minds and give the other videos a chance, but they just didn't do that.
I watched most of the videos that were nominated, and while there were some videos that weren't my kind of videos, and I never would have voted for them, I never would have panned them the way some people panned the videos that other people nominated.
It would have been like me entering the Halloween Big Brother game, and then complaining that everything was about horror movies.
It would have been interesting to see how that tournament would have ended if people would have just given it a chance.

Thank you for saying it was a good idea, but I'm not totally convinced it was. Personally, if it had all worked out, then I would say it was a good idea. I think, maybe, that the videos should have all had a common theme instead of being RANDOM. Like, they should have all been funny videos. And then there could have been another Youtube video tournament with a different theme. So on and so on. It would have been interesting to see what videos people chose under that definition.
But it's also hard because not everyone checks out Youtube videos like you check out music. I love watching Youtube videos, but being obsessed with them ... although a lot of people probably are, it's still something... it might be something that's kind of peculiar rather than common. Youtube is great, though. It's kind of like a mega TV station that includes anything.

If you really want to find out if it's a good idea, you can try it again, but limit the videos to a theme. But as you said, the problem would be that it would be harder for many people to find videos. I rarely go to YouTube and just search videos. Almost every videos that I've seen there that isn't a music video was found through someone posting the specific link for that video. There are sites that track viral videos, but I rarely visit those sites.
I think we all missed out on an opportunity to have a great tournament because many of the videos that were posted were worth watching, and it would have been interesting to see which videos made the final rounds.
I'm always having dreams about alternate versions of Primer. I just woke up from one where it was based on a book, and the movie was very different. Also, I saw it in a theater.
No, Sexy, this does not mean I secretly dislike Primer and wish it were different. Movie is a godd*mn masterpiece as it is, I don't want any changes. Maybe it means I want more movies like Primer, which there are pretty much none of.

10-05-14, 08:23 AM
I think the biggest problem with the youtube tournament was that the videos didn't have a time limit. You might not be interested in the video, but if it's 4 or 5 minutes, you'll probably give it a go. You don't want to see something you instantly think you aren't going to like at all and then see it's 11 minutes long. Then see there are a few more of similar length that you aren't interested in either. It soon adds up to an hour or more of stuff you don't want to watch.
Also, I think that the type was a problem, too. I know I'm way too strict on this kind of thing, but when I hear randon youtube videos, I think this type of thing.

I'm done analyzing dreams. It's over. I say analyze them yourself. My new attitude is that you don't need to analyze yourself to death. I am retiring from my pseudo-psychoanalyst career for the time being. Come up with a meaning for your own dreams and go with it. If I see anything and feel like saying something about it, though, I'll do that. I do believe in things like psychoanalysis, but I'm done with studying it.

I'm not really interested in taking creative writing classes, personally. To me, all you need to do is read a lot and write a lot. Practice practice practice. It'll get easier and you'll get better.

I took a creative writing class in high school and it was a complete waste of time. All that structure, rules and deadlines made it anything but conducive to creativity. I imagine a college course might be more helpful, but I've not written anything in ages. I used to write all the time when I was a teen.
Every now and again I'll pull out my novel and give it a look over, but if I write anything for it at all I usually end disliking the result and deleting it.

I just went back and read the first ten pages of the YouTube Tournament thread, and there were multiple problems with it from the beginning. SC sounded like he was aggravated right from the start, and some of the comments made about the videos were bordering on cruel. People were not only complaining about the videos themselves, but they were just complaining about having to watch videos at all.
I have no idea what people expected when they joined a video tournament, but you would think that one of the requirements would be to actually watch the videos that were nominated.
