From a physiological standpoint, yes, that could possibly be true. From a subjective standpoint, remembering your dreams could be part of a good night's sleep to you. I would rather remember my dreams than recall nothing. I can get frustrated if I don't remember much from my dreams for awhile.
You said it yourself... dreams are psychological... something, us humans, will never completely grasp... so stop trying!! You can not "evaluate" everyone's dreams into your own interpretation... first off.. because most of us, you do not know on a personal level....

You get frustrated about not remembering dreams you aren't aware you had?
If I go awhile without having a particularly memorable dream, I feel I'm missing out. Dreams are not just throwaway junk with me, as they are to you. They are a natural part of life to me. They are a naturally occurring, normal phenomena that I accept and look forward to. They are fascinating because they can be experienced.
You have no spirituality, no religion. Everything is bland, boring and dead to you. You probably think focusing on dreams is a little mystical. You tune out on possible extra enrichment in life. This is why you bitch and complain too much.

You tune out on possible extra enrichment in life.

Okay just saw this on the news and it really ticked me off. Apparently there is a funeral home service in Michigan that offers you to view the dearly departed... AT A DRIVE THRU WINDOW! It looks like a remodeled bank or pharmacy, but now you don't even have to get out of the damn car to view the body or sign the register!
I swear this is a new low in laziness that people can't even be bothered to get out of the damn car to morn the dead! Who the hell thought this was a good idea?

They are fascinating because they can be experienced.
What do you mean by this?
Well, what if we didn't have dreams? What if we just went to sleep and there was nothing? What if nobody ever reported dreams and sleep was just... blankness?
It's not and that's why dreams are fascinating. That's why I compared it to drugs/hallucinating. It sort of is that. I've heard dreaming as being described as temporary insanity -- because you think all these things and feel and believe in certain ways that are just... ludicrous.
It's like life. Life is fascinating because what if there was no life? That's something I've thought a lot about as well. Imagine if there was no life. If nothing existed. Why isn't that a possibility? People sometimes find that concept hard to understand, but I think you can. I was nearly dumped on the first date with a church choir director for discussing this very subject with him, which blew his mind. Stupid me. Try it, though -- it's fun.
But yeah, just like "what if there were no dreams when we slept?" -- it's also possible to consider "what if there was no life at all?" But, surprise! We have both. We have dreams and life. Lucky us. What makes us so fortunate?
Wha? :rotfl: Dreams are mystical? I'd think dreams are mystical? Surely, considering what you think they mean to me, they'd be the opposite?
No, I don't think you would think dreams are mystical. But you might think that I think they are. They are mystical for many people. I don't quite go that route, but I have.
Again I don't really know what you're getting at here. There's nothing but enrichment. I find discussing dreams boring and now I "tune out possible extra enrichment in life"? It makes no sense.
Because dreams ought to be explored. We should look into why we dream what we dream. I hate the stance of, "Dreams are meaningless. Just ignore them. They're random firings of the brain."
Look at how much in life was discovered because someone thought to investigate it. If nobody investigated stuff, we wouldn't have all that we have in this world now. If we don't keep investigating things, what will we miss out on in the future? Someday there could be great advances dealing with dreams and the brain and the mind, and you would have just been a boring naysayer of the past who closed off his openness and his mind.
Everything is bland and boring and dead no matter what.

WTF Michigan? (http://newsone.com/3052398/michigans-new-drive-thru-funeral-home-sparks-controversy/)
..... I kinda like it.
I think it looks bizarrely fun. I find the whole thing really strange and surreal, but I like that about it. To me, it seems futuristic.
What I do think is risky, though, is there's a voyeuristic/exhibitionist aspect to it that is really creepy considering it's a coffin. I mean, people are driving up to these windows and a curtain is opening, revealing a coffin. It looks like one of those striptease shows you'd go to where you put in some change and a curtain in a window opens and reveals a sexy, dancing stripper. Think the Madonna music video, "Open Your Heart." But with coffins! I see this sort of thing inviting perverts. They drive up and masturbate in front of the coffin from their car. Something perverted like that. That's the only bad thing I can imagine. Or maybe a drive-by shooting. Pull up, and if you don't like the person, take out a gun and shoot at the deceased.
There are definitely disadvantages to this.
But I kinda like it at the same time. I wouldn't want it to be done to somebody I know mainly because of the risks I just mentioned... but damn. I kinda like the idea still. It makes dying look a little more fun. I find the idea of being on display in front of a window in a coffin with cars driving by me to be really... exciting. I guess I just learned that I'm a dead exhibitionist. It looks like McDonalds. Do they get fries with that?
The advantages to this kind of thing... are oddly progressive, but something like this is at a very early stage. It needs a lot of tweaking to be perfect. But I like it. I like the idea that anyone can get in their car and just drive through. That would make it easier for mistresses and secret lovers to see the deceased, instead of being afraid to go into the funeral home and confronting the family. Now they just have to drive through and stay safe in their car... and hope the family doesn't rear end them.

Well, what if we didn't have dreams? What if we just went to sleep and there was nothing? What if nobody ever reported dreams and sleep was just... blankness?
Yes, what if it was? So what. We wouldn't know any different.
It's not and that's why dreams are fascinating.
So they are fascinating because they exist?
It's like life. Life is fascinating because what if there was no life?
I agree that life is fascinating. I think all life is fascinating and it's amazing that any of it exists at all. That doesn't make any of it special though. What if there was no life? Then there'd be no life. There was a time when they was no life and there almost certainly will be again. Not just on Earth, but anywhere in the universe. And what?
That's something I've thought a lot about as well. Imagine if there was no life. If nothing existed. Why isn't that a possibility?
It isn't a possibility because it isn't the case. Maybe there are other universes and, in some/most/all of those, maybe that is the case. We don't know, but we do know that in this one that is the case.
But yeah, just like "what if there were no dreams when we slept?" -- it's also possible to consider "what if there was no life at all?" But, surprise! We have both. We have dreams and life. Lucky us. What makes us so fortunate?
Chance. Sounds flippant and ridiculously simple, but that appears to be the answer.
No, I don't think you would think dreams are mystical. But you might think that I think they are. They are mystical for many people. I don't quite go that route, but I have.
I see what you mean here. No, I didn't consider whether you thought they were mystical or not, but I suppose I might've had I done so. Not in a spiritual sense, but in a sense of them having meaning, I guess I did.
Because dreams ought to be explored. We should look into why we dream what we dream. I hate the stance of, "Dreams are meaningless. Just ignore them. They're random firings of the brain."
Well we are exploring them and, so far, that's what we've found. Because you believe/want to believe that it's different doesn't make it so. It might be, but we've not seen any evidence for that yet.
Look at how much in life was discovered because someone thought to investigate it. If nobody investigated stuff, we wouldn't have all that we have in this world now. Again, I'm all for investigating sleep and dreams. It's not something I find overly interesting, I've watched some documentaries about investigating dream/sleep research that has been done. What I haven't done is sit and watch programmes with people talking about dreams they've had because I find that dull. A good "making of documentary" is usually interesting to me, regardless of the film it's about making. I might sit and watch a documentary about the making of The Shining. But I don't want to watch The Shining because I find it boring.
BTW, haven't you had drive thru funeral homes in the US for ages? I swear I remember seeing that kind of thing in the 80's or 90's. Along with drive thru liquor stores, wedding services, etc

Well, I mean, I don't wanna hear everyone's dreams, either. Not everyone is interesting enough to wanna listen to! That's why psychologists/psychiatrists/dream doctors/whatever get paid by their patients -- to be listened to!
But, if someone I cared about was talking about their dreams, I may wanna hear about it.
Don't tell me you'd turn down the chance to talk to Drew Barrymore about her dreams!

What do you think happens after death?
Do you know what I fear more than anything? And I actually feel like there's a greater chance of this than anything else.
Instant reincarnation.
This is what I think: There's no guarantee of an afterlife. But I was guaranteed a life. Somehow, randomly, I wound up living this life that I have now.
I think -- why did I end up having a life at all?
I think that since you can live once... since you can randomly live once... I think it's possible that you can live again. And again and again.
I don't know how it works... but I could believe it works somehow. For some reason, I wound up being what I am. I think there's a chance I could wind up being something else. That I will have another life. I won't be who I am now, but I will be something else. Maybe I won't even be a human. This is something I fear. I fear dying suddenly and POP. I'm in a new body. And I'm, like, a bug or something. This is what I fear. What if I die in my sleep at night and I wake up and I'm a cricket? My alarm clock might be the sound of myself chirping.
How do you get over that though?? What kills me is not knowing what's going to happen.
I used to obsess over it too. But, eventually, I just accepted that one day I would die and moved on. There's nothing you can do. It's best to just stop thinking about it and focus on more important things. Why are you so afraid of dying? Because you want to live. But you're not living, you're not focusing on life, when you obsess over death.

To put it poetically, we become one with the stars. I think what happens scientifically is far more beautiful than anything our minds can imagine, like reincarnation or heaven. This is your problem right here. You're saying life isn't special. And yes, maybe in certain ways, it isn't. But in other ways, it is.
So it isn't and it is. Wonderful. The fact that it exists at all is amazing. The chain of events that happened in order for everything we currently see around us to happen is beyond astounding. We really can't fathom it. It seems that life, as we know of it, will/can only exist for a ridiculously short amount of time in the life of this universe, given our current understanding. Something like 1000th of a percent of the life of the universe. I meant special as in meant or intended. If you meant it in a way similar to what I've described, then I agree that we/it is special.
You know this how?
We don't know it as fact, but our current understanding and the evidence show this to be the case.
By "no life" I mean EVERYTHING. I mean imagining that there are NO UNIVERSES. NOTHING. Not a shred of anything at all to be found. Zip. Not just a bunch of space and planets, but nothing alive. NOTHING. Nothing! Not a speck. Absolutely nothing.
Well that's not life. However, before there was the universe it seems there was nothing. Not a void or an absense of matter, just nothing. No existance at all because the universe didn't exist.
There's a documentary series on over here atm that you might like. It's called The Human Universe. Only two episodes have been shown so far. Here's the first. I don't know if you'll be able to see this or not.

Well, I mean, I don't wanna hear everyone's dreams, either. Not everyone is interesting enough to wanna listen to! That's why psychologists/psychiatrists/dream doctors/whatever get paid by their patients -- to be listened to!
But they exist!!! You have to be fascinated! See? It's utter arse gravy, isn't it?
Don't tell me you'd turn down the chance to talk to Drew Barrymore about her dreams!
Sure, but I wouldn't be there because I wanted to listen to her talk about her dreams.

No. Dreams ARE fascinating. But of course I don't want a million people coming up to me and telling me their dreams. The difference between you and I is that I'd listen to a lot of dreams, but I'm human and I'm not THAT hardcore fascinated by other people's dreams. Besides, I personally feel like listening to a lot of dreams isn't really that useful, though, IT COULD BE. To someone who is really investigating. But I mean, I don't live to listen to dreams. I COULD. Pay me well enough and I will. That would be wonderful.

I used the pic with mark a couple of years ago, I think. I mentioned it when you were talking about It's Pat because SNL isn't a thing over here and, for most people, the only SNL spin off film they'd probably know (and I liked) was Wayne's World. Strange that you think two mentions are obssessive, though.
I also found an article about another drive thru funeral home. It's just been razed, but it was used as one back in the 80's. I was sure I'd seen this before. It was one of those "Only in America" stories.

After you talked about it, I started thinking of you as a Wayne's World person and imagining that in some degree, you're like Wayne and Garth yourself. So when I saw the picture, I felt... ah, okay, this makes sense. I know this person. Wayne and Garth are here again.

Don't buy those at Comic Cons unless you want to overpay for them. At the last con, the Despicable Me ones were selling for $20 - $25 each, but they're available in the stores here for less than $10 each, and they're easy to find.

I think I have a serious addiction to buying books you guys. I just ordered six books on Amazon. I need an intervention.

That sucks you feel down. I had a long day and I'm really tired. About to watch a movie and retire.

I've never seen The Burning. Would definitely love to do a commentary with you guys again.
I go through obsession periods too. I want to do nothing but watch movies with my free time the last couple of years really. I never read anymore and don't watch near the sports I used to. I wish I was better at finding a balance.

what books ?
So I was watching Cosmos the other day, and he pronounced Uranus "your-uh-nis", instead of the much funnier "your anus". I still laughed, this time at the fact that they were purposefully avoiding that pronunciation so viewers wouldn't laugh.

do you have access to the movie?
what books ?
I am reading VALIS by Philip K. Dick and it may top Blood Meridian as my favorite book of all-time (which I never thought would be possible). He understands schizophrenia so well, and I love how he weaves philosophy and science into this guy's psychotic ramblings. So, I bought...
Ubik by Philip K. Dick
Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
The Search for Philip K. Dick by Anne R. Dick (a Dick biography)
Neuromancer by William Gibson
Dune by Frank Herbert
I have said the word dick too many times in this post.

i love books, especially hardcovers, i'm weird about that, paperbacks always get torn up and shoddy-looking. don't get me started on 'nooks' or 'kindles' or whatever. CHOP DOWN THOSE TREES
anyways, i have Dune as well, haven't read it yet. AND you got the Blade Runner novel, gotta be one of the best titled books ~Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?~

Me too! I gotta have the book. Books are my security blanket and I carry one around with me every place I go.
I was just telling Swan about Do Androids Dream.. It's one of two books I've read by Dick. I need to remedy that.
Speaking of books, this person was getting rid of all their books so I got some weird ones. A book about Michael Landon's life (Pa on Little House) a book on the JonBenet Ramsey murder, and some book by the guy that wrote Helter Skelter about some scandalous actress in the 1920s. Oh, and a book that is mostly an interview with Ted Bundy.
Me too! I gotta have the book. Books are my security blanket and I carry one around with me every place I go.
I need to start doing this.
The title of this thread reminds me of Mr. Freeze's puns in Batman and Robin... oh the horror

One of my pet hates... Changing the pronounciation of words. This one is even more annoying because you know it's only been done so that teachers don't have to as "Anus" in front of students.
