Oh, I don't care about Hannibal at all. I've never gotten the mystique. Hopkins performance is so OTT and hammy I just laugh. Cox is hardly in Manhunter, as the character isn't really important. Mads is good, but I only really liked the first and last episodes of Season 1. I tried to watch Season 2, but it's just too dark (I mean actually dark, not thematically) and they've **** with the colour so much that it just annoys me. As I was only giving it another go because of the last episode of season 1, I decided to drop it.

It seems to be becoming more and more prevalent, especially with crime drama. There are entire seasons of Criminal Minds where I think they tried to save money by not paying for lightbulbs.

We talked about everything, but we kept it light. We talked about our jobs, what we like to do (we don't have much in common, but I am ok with that) we kind of joked around for awhile and then we took a walk around the duck pond. We were both kind of quiet during the walk, but it was a good quiet.
I did feel comfortable around him. The first five or ten minutes were really awkward for me, but he just kept talking and soon I forgot I really don't know him at all. I actually ended up being the one to suggest our next plans. I was talking about Blue Springs and he said he hadn't been there in years so I said that he should come with me the next time he has some time off. Those type of movies are always very hit or miss with me. I can really really love them like with The Hedgehog or I really hate them. I think the sentimentality can feel cheap and manipulative if the filmmakers aren't careful or if the viewer isn't buying into the film.

I haven't seen the Angelopoulos, but everything else I've seen from him is great. Have you seen any other Of Weerasethakul's films? I strongly recommend seeing others before you watch the self reflexive Uncle Boonmee.
By the way, what's up everyone? I've been away from MoFo (Mofo) for the past couple weeks for finals and post-finals de-stressing vacation, but I'm back now, and this thread seems cool, I'll hang around here when I can.

See my top ten :).
I say that because the past lives in the title not only refer to that of its protagonist (and other characters?), but also the past lives of Weerasethakul's cinema. I think the film makes a lot more sense after seeing his other films both because Boonmee is a more difficult film than his others, but also because Boonmee builds some of its narrative and meaning on the other films.
I see. I will try Tropical Malady first then.

That's the reason why I love discovering new movies so much. It's such an undescribably satisfying feeling when you've finally found another new favorite (a new top 100 kind of film)! The last time I had it was last week with Le Cercle Rouge. I literally applauded to my screen when it was over. :p

I use the term masterpiece pretty loosely, it typically applies to any movie I found to be profound or profoundly moving. Not necessarily a perfect movie (ex. Distant Voices, Still Lives), but one that left a unique and (at least semi-) permanent stamp in my head.

I look at it more from a technical standpoint, mainly acting cinematography direction and dialogue.

Honestly, for me, a lot of it is the power of the script. Characterization, character development, how the writer/director tells the story, the themes, etc. Also, technical stuff comes into play, like cinematography can go a long way. A lot of the time it is just a film that has a lot of what I like. Even though it's not what most would consider a masterpiece, I consider Primer a masterpiece for me because it has a lot of stuff I like in it - science fiction, science, being a puzzle film, heady intellectual dialogue. It also has a certain 'at home' feel for me because the characters act and talk a hell of a lot like my cousin, who was my best friend growing up. It's probably the perfect example of a movie I can watch on repeat for the rest of my life without ever getting bored. For those reasons, it's a masterpiece in my book.

Like Bluedeed, I use the term pretty loosely. Every film that has a strong and lasting effect on me and that I respect a lot for its technical and narrative quality could be called a masterpiece by me.
A masterpiece is a piece of film that is so extremely well made that it automatically makes me assume that it's a consummation of the mind of a complete master of the cinematic arts, someone who just knows how to make a fantastic movie.

and their best music. mozart. beethoven. and the sensation of experiencing their best work. and i think that for a movie to be a masterpiece, there should be an incredible force underneath the picture. like an undercurrent. an understanding of humanity and a profound power... perhaps a worldview, a mindblowing one
once i get going on this it's hard to stop rambling. but that's why i think the Shining (1980) by Kubrick is a masterpiece. people go cuckoo on the conspiracy side of things with that movie, but even beyond the surface of a compelling and excellent flick... i begin to notice pieces of a worldview... that come from Stanley Kubrick, and from a personal place. i know many people think of him as cold, distant, & inhuman. yet with that movie i began to catch glimpses of his grande vision. moreso than his other films i've seen so far
then again, at the same time, i love a Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) too much to not call it a masterpiece. and there's probly not too much profound about that, other than loving the idea of a spirit nightmare dude who can navigate from dreamworld to reality. so who knows what i'm talking about

The "masterpiece argument" is interesting. The term is such a vague one that everyone has assigned it their own personal meaning. For me, like a lot of others it seems, I can't call a film a masterpiece unless it has employed technical mastery to hit me on a deeper emotional level. The former alone doesn't seem enough to me.
But everyone has their own definitions, and there's something to be said for considering the intentions of the filmmaker/artist/writer/whatever. If they want only to display technical proficiency without the pretense of affecting us emotionally, should the masterpiece tag be available to apply to that work? Dick Cavett once asked Orson Welles if anybody had ever made a pornographic masterpiece. Here's his answer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jBrhI_qqAY
Sidenote: That entire interview is well worth watching if you get the time. It's all on YouTube. Aside from anything else, Welles is just a pleasure to listen to and he and Cavett seem to have a good rapport.
Orson Welles is the coolest.

Yup, that book is invaluable when you're first starting out, and I still go back to it regularly. Let me know if I can give you any tips, Swan - I'm no expert, but after three years in Film Studies I feel like I have a decent awareness of the major scholars both for general analysis and in a good variety of more specific areas. I've also built up a vaguely decent library of journal articles from which I'd be happy to share as well, if you don't already get access to the databases with the course you're taking - though I assume you do if you're enrolled at a University. "Introduces students to the history of film, film technology, various film styles, genres, and movements, as well as helping them develop and apply a knowledge of film terminology and theories to critically analyze American and international cinema."
Bordwell/Thompson (and their individual work), Pam Cook (The Cinema Book is another film student bible), Richard Dyer, Rick Altman, Richard Maltby, Steve Neale, Graham Roberts & Heather Wallis (Introducing Film is another great introductory book), Laura Mulvey, Robert Kolker (check out A Cinema of Loneliness if you want to write about New Hollywood), Donald Richie (for Asian cinemas), Andrew Sarris and Pauline Kael (famous for their biting war of words over Auteur theory) and Noel Burch have all been hugely helpful to me at various times. I'm missing quite a few I'm sure, but those are the ones that I've enjoyed reading and that came up most often in a quick perusal of my various essays over the past few years.
One of my favourite things about film studies is its interdisciplinary nature. Obviously I love film and that's the main reason for choosing it, but I've learned so much not just about movies, but about all the things cinema portrays. Researching my papers has led me at various times to material on sociology, geography, history, anthropology, architecture, art history, psychology, literature and a bunch of others. If you ask me, if you do decide to major in the subject, you'll be making a great choice. :)
Nice, that's a lot of people to check out. I have a book by Pauline Kael, she's great.
Did you have to read any Andre Bazin? I have two books by him that I've skimmed through. I imagine I'll be more interested in his work when I watch more Italian Neorealism.

What I want to do over time is buy different books and read different essays/reviews relevant to different time periods and slices of cinema, and try and become well versed in as many different parts of it as I can, as there's so much great stuff to explore. The great thing is you can teach yourself I guess, and every film you watch helps you and you're learning along the way. I really want to be involved in something to do with films in the future, not exactly sure why I'm doing Business Information Systems (it's like Computer Science), although I don't dislike it :p

My opinion (and experience) is that with both film studies and especially Computer Science, the schooling is way far behind what is actually happening. Most of the important film criticism of the past century was informal, and it didn't really happen very much until well past the mid-century mark, and computer science has just developed too fast to keep up with properly. Both of those seem to be among the best and easiest fields to study independently of formal education. I'm minorimg in Computer Science at school, but basically to give me discipline that I wouldn't have via self-teaching. I've had one film class in college, but I learned far more on my own that semester than I did in that class.
I imagine film classes can only bolster your film education. I want to continue studying film, as well as develop and refine my skills in writing on cinema. Because film is my greatest passion, I don't want to study something else and have that consume my time, and have to put my film education by the wayside. I want it to be my #1 priority.
Therefore, I think it will be a good choice for me.

Of course education can (in most cases) only improve your knowledge and abilities. Do you go to school for film now, or are you planning on it? I would love to study film, but an academic career never appealed to me and I wasn't sure what else I'd do with a film related degree so I chose a different, extremely similar major, chemical engineering. While film is one of my deepest passions, like Daniel, I also really enjoy what I'm doing in school in addition to my film related activities.

Good to be back after some hiatus. How are all you "MoFo's" doing these days? Between the last time I was here and now, I was smoking five packs a day, (now quit the junk all together for a year now), and I'm headed back into college for a masters in Film and English, and (down the road when I chew on those for awhile), a degree in Mathematics. All things well here. (And btw, I LOVE the new site reboot! Amazing looking). Take care friends! Now I'm off to watch me a Movie!

Good for you! And once you do one interview and survive it, you'll have the confidence to put yourself out there for more. Or you may just land it the first time out. :) Good luck! :)
