It is insufferable to claim you "never" see horror movies (or Westerns, musicals, war movies, teenage romances or slasher pictures). You're presenting ignorance as taste. The trick is to find the good ones.

Good quote, but i do feel it is a bit easy for someone being paid to watch movies to say something like that. I mean i rarely watch musicals not because i think they are all bad or that there isn't plenty out there that i would like, but because i have such a spotty track record with them that i'd rather spend my time watching a Thriller, Western, whatever. It should be understandable that i find it hard to get enthusiastic about a genre that rarely satisfies me regardless of how many i have seen and the same applies to people who have had similar experiences with horrors or whatever.

I don't believe Ebert said that because he was paid to watch movies, it's something I 100% agree with (and I'm not paid to do it). I think what Ebert meant was that you shouldn't really judge or criticize films based on their genre, so when you claim you don't watch horror because you don't like it, that just means you haven't found the good horror films. That's ignorance, he nailed it.

By being paid for it i meant Ebert spent his time watching as many movies as possible, good or bad. So he thoroughly explored most genres for payment rather than for his personal enjoyment. From his comments about them i don't believe for a second he would have spent much of his time watching Slashers and finding the good ones for example if it wasn't his profession. That's why i think comments like that from him come easy and are pretty meaningless. Not that i actually disagree with what he said.

Yeah, I think I agree with Camo's sentiment the most. The majority of us aren't going to watch everything, and most of us know our tastes by now. I don't think there is anything wrong with having preferences in your film watching. This time of year I regularly hear people say that they don't want to watch all the biopics or Oscar bait that comes out yet I watch them all. Not because I love them all but because my batting average is higher. I don't think the I hate "insert genre" statement is as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

Is that the one with Jeff Bridges and Merly Streep? I heard it's The Hunger Games rip-off or something, which btw is starting to catch up on me. I wouldn't rank it as the best, and in the beginning I just didn't get what people see in it, even I could take a camera and shoot this girl a grand doughter of a friend of my dad...walking with an arch and arrow in the woods right next to her house... There aren't even great effects in it! But lately, it's somehow growing on me.

so far it seems more like a rip off of "divergent" which was a big rip off of harry potter.

They've all got a sorting hat, and get categorized based on 4 different attributes and the main character transcends the categorization because (s)he is special.

yeah jeff bridges, katie holmes, streep, and that dude who played eric northman in true blood

True blood had a fantastic season 2 but then went downhill and the series finale was bad. I predicted the ending and it turned out my prediction was way better story writing than what they actually did - it was crap how they ended it.

yeah they're all rip offs of the same concept.
harry potter was divergent as well, he belonged in multiple houses and the sorting hat had problems placing him. They go into it more in the later books when it's spelled out for harry.

divergent was a decent flick.
hunger games I turned off about 40 minutes in, I couldn't stand it anymore.

So they're all rip offs, yet among the highest grossing films. Interesting. I guess people see them for brute special effevts, if nothing else, but Hunger Games doesn't even have that! At least not to make it one of the biggest hits. It will forever be a mystery.

I saw all Potters, and I must say I love them, especially the last one. The end is collosal. Haven't seen much fans here, though.

Were divergent and the giver among the highest grossing films?
I certainly haven't seen every film in history and I don't know if the sorting hat thing was done before harry potter but I can only imagine that it was.

Concept is one thing, but it's execution that makes something a great movie or not. As simple of a concept as "person is kidnapped. badass kills a bunch of people to rescue person" has certainly been done thousands of times yet this concept is the basis for some of my favorite films and I would go and see it again in theaters for a new film if it looked well done with a nice cast and director.

I just checked it out, and you're right, they weren't, at least not all-time world-wide top 100:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/

But maybe the concept is also what makes it great, the story, sort of the essence, the basis of the film? The execution is then expanding on that? You're right, though. If the concept is good, you can use it again and again over different executions. But if it's bad, the film's bad no matter what the execution is, rihgt?

I think there are some concepts that simply won't be entertaining or dramatic, yeah a bad concept is doomed IMO. There are probably rare exceptions - there seem to be exceptions to every rule. You'd need a hell of a lot more skilled cast and crew with a bad concept, that much is for sure.

My six year old is getting to play quarterback and had a nice little bootleg that he ran 35 yards for his first TD. Unfortunately they got stopped at the end of the game on the one and they tied 12-12. Very fun day with my mini-mes.

It's not the kind of character driven piece I like best because the characters are constantly talking plot which is all but insignificant. That being said I loved the performances and thought a lot of the scenes were really great. I settled in much cozier on a re-watch so we will see what a third viewing brings. Very good just not top notch PTA for me.

You talked about early PTA verses post Blood and I have heard that before but think I disagree. Boogie Nights for example does a much better job of just letting the audience travel with the characters then Vice does. I find it much funnier as well.

It's Rezekne (In Latvia). Only one hall. They show about 4 movies and every 2 weeks they change them. Couldn't watch Mad Max at cinema LOL. Was really disappointed.

Thanks. :) Oh, a Latvian? Glad you broke out of the USSR? How is it there in the Baltics? I'm from Zagreb, Croatia. We're pretty similar, except you're much more advanced and we had to go through a war in '90 - '95. Sorry to hear that about the cinema. Maybe they have re-runs? I guess you can't go just like that to a bigger town, maybe? (I'm not saying Rezekne is small, for all I know, it's bigger than Zagreb)

According to Wikipedia - Rezekne is 17km2, but Zagreb is 641km2. ;D It's cool here, but finding people with same interests is a bit hard and finding job is almost impossible right now (I am studying/I don't care).
Nearest cinema is in Daugavpils which is about 100km from here. If I wanted to see something more independent then I would need to go to Riga (capital city).

Do you have a DVD store or of the sort over there? Watching it on DVD is also fantastic, and it ani't particulary expensive, at least not here. And, of course, you can order online. Just a suggestion. :)

Anyway, I ordered this today for inspiration. Giger was my favorite artist growing up, and he's still up there, but I've developed an understanding of my own artistic taste quite a lot since my teenage years, and one thing I love that I feel Giger is lacking - something Steadman is the master of - is messiness. Steadman's art is psychotic.

He has always appealed to me, but I never gave him enough attention until now. You know how there are some musicians or filmmakers, or artists, who have always been in the background but then you actually give them a try and you find they're one of your favorites? Steadman is like that for me, and right now is that major realization. Amazing artist.

First of, THANK YOU HK for taking time and communicating with me! I need it DESPERATELY in situations like these, because only that can kill the pain. I have absolutely no one in my life. I wasn't around because MF is very addictive, but as I say, it's my last salvation. Thank God for it!

Talked to the sleep doc yesterday. Apparently I have the worst case of sleep apnea he's ever seen, and he's not a young guy. The figures were tremendous. I guess I'm at extreme risk for a few things and basically my brain is completely sleep deprived due to no REM sleep. They moved my prescription for a CPAP to urgent and I'll be getting it in a few days, and should fix everything. Excited. My mood has been so wonky and all over the place and after a while with sleep apnea my brain literally started to hurt. I'm excited to be able to watch movies like normal, read again, be more active.

I'm sorry to hear that your Sleep Apnea is that bad, but hopefully the doctors will be able to help you soon.

Back when I was in college, my friend's father suffered from a severe case of Sleep Apnea. When he tried to sleep, he would stop breathing and wake up. It was so bad that we made several trips to the emergency room with him. Eventually, the doctor decided to do a tracheotomy so he could breath and sleep.

I hope that your case isn't that severe.

Swan, I think you should see a doctor about getting a weight loss prescription. I think that might help you with the sleep apnea. You've got to lose weight.

That's rough. I do stop breathing and wake up gasping for air - but I'm pretty sure it won't get nearly that severe to where I need surgery. Doc said when I tried the CPAP, my brain just overflowed with good REM sleep - it was like if you were in the desert, completely dehydrated, and then found a pool of water.

First step is to get my sleep back in order and have a rested, awake mind. Next comes the good stuff, like reading, watching movies, and yes, finally working on exercise and weight loss. I agree that I need to lose weight.

It's great news that you're getting it sorted, Swan. Do you have a mask? I have a friend who stops breathing five or six times an hour for 10-20 seconds and he has to sleep with a mask on.

That's the CPAP, yeah. It's just a machine that lets air through your nostrils, but it completely fixes sleep apnea. I'm extremely excited to get it. :)

Apparently it takes up to a month to get used to it. Sadly he's still not sleeping well and they're talking about prescribing sedatives as well. It works really well for most people, though. I hope you get used to it quickly. :)

Don't say that... you'll trick his mind into thinking the mask is a curse, not a gift.
