I took a creative writing class in high school and it was a complete waste of time. All that structure, rules and deadlines made it anything but conducive to creativity. I imagine a college course might be more helpful, but I've not written anything in ages. I used to write all the time when I was a teen.
Every now and again I'll pull out my novel and give it a look over, but if I write anything for it at all I usually end disliking the result and deleting it.
My instructor agrees with you. In the first class she talked about how she hates how a lot of creative writing classes are structured and that most people leave them with the exact same set of skills that they went into them with. She talked about how the person will now feel good or bad about their writing skills based on what the instructor thought about them but will have learned nothing.
We mostly do exercises that help us become more creative and better story tellers. It's not a write and critique kind of class.

I got back from Ohio expecting the weather to be all hot and muggy but it's actually beautiful here. Nice and cool.
The trip was fun. My dad's new wife is really cool. She's smart, well-read, interesting and likes to do a lot of things. She'll be good for my dad.
We ate so much I am really sick of all food. The first night my dad took us to Morton's which is a high end steakhouse. I didn't give a crap about the steak but the sides were exceptional. I got to go to Taste of India which has the best Indian food in the world. I love that place. Yum.
Tim and I pulled a Monica and Chandler. Since we both had stuff packed, he is unpacking at my house and I'll unpack at his and we will be doing the back and forth thing, I guess. Yikes.
Oh, and I got the worst haircut of my life and I had a two~inch buzz cut before. Thank god it's still long enough for a ponytail. Just barely.
We mostly do exercises that help us become more creative and better story tellers. It's not a write and critique kind of class.
That sounds like what a creative writing class should be. Also, I think learning about famous writers writing techniques would be incredibly valuable for any writer. I know learning how someone like Tarantino writes has helped me out a lot. Exchange the structure bullsh*t for stuff like that, and you've got a good class.
I wished I had creative writing classes where I live... I always liked to write and I feel that I'm always too concerned with the structure instead of what's really important!

I think it comes down to reading and writing as much as you can. Read 'proper' books, which have been professionally edited as I feel you get used to the rhythms of structure and how words flow. You'll also see the correct use of punctuation. Of course you can do all this in Word and, if you get something to the publishing stage you'll have an editor, but I would think knowing these things will give you more confidence in your writing and in showing it to others.
Ask Austruck. I'm sure she'll be happy to talk about this.
Hello everyone! Thought it was about time I dropped by here given how popular it's become. So can someone explain to me what exactly we're meant to do? :D

I highly recommend Hotline Miami for you dudes who like video games with a touch of art. This game is like David Lynch meets Drive meets who knows what else. It's really unique, has a great soundtrack, and is really fun. It's a 2-D top-down action game. It's really cheap too. Get it. Play it. Enjoy it.

Yeah, as I remember it there's barely more in the Director's Cut. But Scott's preferred cut is the Theatrical Cut. That is the actual Director's Cut. The company asked him to add some more stuff for the DVD and he did, which became the "Director's Cut, but he wrote a letter about it that you can find in the pamphlet of the box set, explaining that he still prefers the Theatrical Cut.
The Theatrical Cut is better, in my opinion. It's just perfectly paced.

Also, even though I own a few Criterions, I still don't get what so special about them.
Um, I can trust them to usually cost more than I want to pay. I really haven't noticed any significant difference in the quality of the viewing experience.
I'm with you on this one, MV. I don't have any and don't really see the point.

The Criterions I own were only bought because I couldn't find those particular films in non-Criterion DVD. And I bought them on sale. I still haven't gotten around to watching the Three Colors Trilogy, but haven't noticed anything special about the others.
I don't own any Criterions because those are hella expensive and just don't seem like they're worth it.
I'm a big fan of Criterion, feel great pride in my collection of them, and you guys suck.

I take pride in my DVD collection, but really couldn't give a crap about the "status symbol" Criterions. If I bother with special features at all, they're a one time watch and I don't care about the cover art, since they are just going to get put on a shelf were you can't see more than the spine anyway. As long as the movie plays fine and the cases aren't broken or beat up, I'd rather just pay a few dollars per movie and have a larger collection.
I'm a fan of DVD bargain bins. If I have to pay more than $5 or $6 for an old movie, I'm not happy.

I don't get why the hell you guys have to pick on what is just a type of DVD. What do you have against Criterions? Is it the price? I don't get it. There are Criterion collectors out there and I am one of them, I like the kind of movies Criterion puts out, I absolutely love special features and essays, the cover art is usually to die for. Why the hell do you have to condemn something that is so good-hearted just because it's ten dollars more costly?

Who's picking on it? I'm saying I don't think they're worth the extra money. If you think they are worth and you love them, that's great. Keep collecting them. But if I can buy two more movies for that $10, I'd rather have the two more movies.

Also I think there's this weird perception that if a movie makes it onto Criterion, that somehow means it's a superior film and if you own these films and can afford to shell out the extra dough for Criterion releases, you're somehow a superior movie enthusiast. And I'm not talking about just here at MoFo. It's something I've noticed elsewhere on the net too.

Krispy Kreme then sued him, made him take his songs down, and he had to change his name. Here's the song he released after that. It's lowkey a great song with a really positive message.

You don't even have to get rid of your DVDs. A lot of Blu-rays come with a spare DVD to keep, so, you can have both. I have some Blu-rays and some DVDs of the same thing. It's nice because my laptop doesn't accept Blu-rays, only DVDs. There are some DVDs I got rid of after getting rid of the Blu-rays, but I later regretted getting rid of them. My VHS player was a converter. I hated converting stuff, though. It's a time waster. My family tried to unleash hordes and hordes of family home movies on me to convert -- a nightmare. The VHS past was once a beautiful past, but it's now a horror. I just said to myself, "Do I really need to watch all this again?" More and more, I'm just realizing that life is short.
I say if you have VHS tapes and they mean a lot... keep them. Store them. But ONLY store them. Have the psychological benefit of knowing you have them... and knowing you could watch them, theoretically... but don't bother actually working with them, especially to convert. I'm sure with GB's patience, she can convert with ease, but I cannot. I decided to move into the "I can live without that...." way of thinking. For a LONG, LONG TIME, I resisted this. I thought I was special and not like everyone else and I HAD to live with something.
I finally decided to join the "who gives a f**k?" people. You might cry, but you'll breathe a whole lot better.
