If you have Netflix, Mulholland Dr. is on there. I'd say Sideways was the best of those three, but only if you're in the right mood. It's a depressing portrait of a midlife crisis. Though I'm not sure there's another way to paint a midlife crisis.

I only kind of have Netflix, and I really shouldn't use it (the account belongs to my friend's now ex-fiance). I can't really say Mulholland Drive looks that appealing either. Also, I tried watching it at some point and ended up turning if off. Same with Sideways.

Recently pulled a big haul in from the library. Mostly silent films, Lang, Murnau, a few Buster Keaton films. I'll post the list and reactions to them in a seperate thread later.

Also, I will finish this:

I'm having a smoke break after about 40 minutes in. I just know it's a disturbing British flick that got decent reviews. So far I like it quite a bit. My only frustration is that it's sometimes hard for me to understand what they are saying with the thick English accent.

Just finished it-dark, disturbing, intense, and very good.

Well, asking just coming back from the video store, I have my current array of movies to watch.

Carriers (2009)
See it before, and remember it to be good, but not in detail. I love infection movies, so I won't be disappointed.

Hunger (2009)
Good idea, but could go in a really bad direction. Movies like this need convincing acting, and unexpected happenings to keep it going, therwise it will be another "Phone Booth".

Ice Quake (2010)
A disaster movie with potential. Yet the fact it went straight to DVD, and got a lower than favorable IMDb rating, haven't set my expectations very high.

The Jacket (2005)
Seen this before, and it is nothing but a masterpiece. Acting is great, cast is great, and the story is mind-blowing. Can't wait to refresh my memory.

The Stepfather (2009)
Ever since seeing Amber Heard in Zombieland (and her appearance on Top Gear), she was the reason for me to rent this. The story is typical of a B grade drama with a few thrilling moments, but if it was a waste of time, I'll just blame Amber.

Am watching Bottle Rocket right now. Anthony is sitting in the laundry room with Inez. He's totally entranced. Nice scene. But I'm trying to figure out if this is actually heading anywhere or not. Wes Anderson ... no middle ground for me. Loved Rushmore, found The Royal Tenenbaums irritating and The Life Aquatic just plain unwatchable. The Darjeeling Limited ... kept me watching, and enjoyed the ending. Still need to catch up with Moonrise Kingdom.

Almost Love (2006), written and directed by Han Lee. (Korean, with English subtitles.) Childhood pals, growing up, slowing coming to realize and coming to grips with the fact their friendship is growing into love. Light and fluffy, with charming quick cuts between the two as kids and the two as young adults. Slowly becoming more serious. Good for a Friday night when you don't want to think too much.

Checked out Abel Gance's original silent version of J'accuse (apparently he remade it in 1938, which I'd also be interested in watching).

Coincidently, my mum was reading a letter from my Granddad to my Grandma that he sent her during WWII and, in it, he mentions and recommends this 'new film' he's just seen called Arsenic & Old Lace. It sounded odd to see it refered to as a new film. :D

When I first saw Meet the Parents in the cinema, although there was lots of laughter from the rest of the audience, I was almost embarrassed at how hard I was laughing.

I found the satirical treatment of the Jewish guy's extremely awkward entry to his shiksa girlfriend's Wasp family habitat - a situation in which I've found myself more than once - to be absolutely genius.

(what did you think of the book?)

I thought it was great. I'm quite familiar with Malcolm X's life, but the book gave me a lot more insight into the man. (This was bound to happen, though, seeing as it is from his perspective - to an extent.)

I suggest you try reading if you have an interest in him, or in the Civil rights movement in general.

Have you seen the film?

CelluloidChild
03-14-13, 08:22 PM
I read it almost 30 years ago, but his sense of conviction and several striking passages are still clear in my mind. I thought it was a well put-together book with the help of Alex Haley.

And I saw the film when it first came out. I'll wait to give my opinion on that till after you've seen it.

Getting ready to watch http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a3/Prometheusposterfixed.jpg/220px-Prometheusposterfixed.jpgagain. Hope this goes better than the first time, I had to turn it off because I got bored.

I liked it. 3_5

Not as good as Blade Runner and Alien, though. But that's expected anyway.

Thanks to various outspoken members of this site, I plan to further my film education tonight by watching either

or

The first one is significantly better.

I haven't seen The Mirror yet, but I'd be significantly shocked if this was to be true.

In that case I'll watch Persona first so I have something to look forward to.

Mulholland Drive I still give it a 6.5/10. One of those where I feel like I have no clue what is going on. But I think I am a bit closer with the 2nd watch. Still an enjoyable film though.

It's not that difficult.
You should read a little bit about the plot of the movie, if you really have no clue of what's going on. It will be more rewarding the next time you watch it.

Persona > The Mirror

Both are mandatory viewing though. The best of Tarkovsky, the best of Bergman.

I have a little bit, but a part of me wants to figure a majority of it out for myself.

Back to the Future - Because time travelling supercars are awesome, and because Lea Thompson was gorgeous back in the 1980's...

Have you watched any Tarkovsky yet? The Mirror should be the last one to watch, it is his least accessible movie.

Persona, on the other hand, is much easier to watch. Not as easy as a blockbuster, but still quite easier than The Mirror.

Anyway, Tarkovsky's Stalker is better than these two movies.

Ok, I'll take your word for it. Which Tarkovsky movie/s should I watch first?

I have a copy of Solaris.

I guess, from what you just said, I should get hold of Stalker too....

P.S. No, I've never watched a Tarkovsky film

My night looks pretty good:

Adaptation. (2002)

http://www.impawards.com/2002/posters/adaptation.jpg

It seems to get a lot of critical acclaim and it is of course a script by the famous Charlie Kaufman, so I'm hoping for a very original film with an interesting story.
I'm still not exactly sure what to expect, though. That makes it even more interesting!

The Master (2012)

It's the only PTA movie I haven't seen yet. I loved all of his movies so far, therefore my expectations are pretty high. I hope I won't be disappointed, but I trust in Anderson's 'masterly' skills.
