On Netflix Instant? Netflix Instant has two version of Harakiri, a 1919 version by Fritz Lang that isn't very good, and the 2011 version by Takashi Miike which isn't very good. The poster you have shown is the 1962 version by Masaki Kobayashi, which is a masterpiece, and far far better than Netflix's two films.

Ruiz normally works in France (he's originally from Chile) and he has many great films from there. There's always 87 years of Manoel de Oliveira films (though he made only shorts for a good period of time) to see. I haven't seen anything from Pedro Costa, but heard a lot of good things and was planning on checking him out soon.

Have to rewatch Seven Samurai and Ikiru. Due to my recent love of Kurosawa I probably would like it a lot more than the first time I saw them (both 3.5 films).

Today, though I take a break from Kurosawa. Watching Ozu film instead! Early Summer with Setsuko Hara. <3

I also found out Kurosawa made a movie inspired by Dostoyevsky's Idiot with Hara and Mifune. Glorious! Will be watching it soon I guess.

I saw this a while back. Thematically, it is nothing new, but I found it to be quite the tender coming-of-age story, which spawns some beautiful photography (some shots were vaguely reminiscent of Malick, actually) and generally excellent performances.

Jeff Nichols is one of the most interesting young filmmakers alive in America today. Mud was quite the accomplished piece and he was only 33-34 at the time.

The original tagline was "That one Pulp Fiction rip off that some people care about"
That didn't reach a big enough audience though, so they changed it

It's a natural progression for Wong Kar-Wai. His 90s movies were about what it's like to be in your 20s, his 2000s work about what it's like to be in your 30s. So appropriately Wong enters the new decade with a film about what it's like to be in your 40s. Visually wonderful and filled with Wong's sensuous pleasures and heart wrenching feelings of longing.

Interesting film that one Mark. I've long been curious about the history of France during WW2. I've lived there for a while and visited almost every year for thirty years, and have talked in the past with older people about being in an occupied country. There was sometimes a reluctance, a pursing of lips, a shrug of the shoulders during conversations about life during the war. It's very hard to look at another country and wonder about the extent of collaboration when your own country happily escaped such a fate.

Looks like a decent movie. Let me know how you like it. I think that the lego movies are pretty neat.

That's one of my very favourite films, Gunslinger. I really do think its a masterpiece. Even if you don't enjoy it there are a number of shots/scenes that should take your breath away, some of the most beautiful cinematography I have seen.

Edit: It's also where my current avatar is from.

In preparation for the Oscars, I'm popping my Woody Allen movie cherry tonight.

That's funny because I watched my first Woody Allen a couple days ago with Annie Hall; I thought it was pretty good. My wife wants to see Blue Jasmine so I'll be interested to know what you think.

My favorite female performance this year. You should watch more Woody Allen too, since his movies are mostly character-driven.

The King of Marvin Gardens (1972)

http://meansheets.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/king-of-marvin-gardens.jpeg

It's made by the director of Five Easy Pieces, Bob Rafelson, and it stars Jack Nicholson in the early '70s! I'm expecting something really good. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

If a movie is genuinely good, it will still be good regardless of the size of the screen.

Yeah but Gravity is one of those VERY rare 3D movies where 3D enhances the viewing instead of ending up pissing me off that I spent an extra 2.50 at the theater and I end up with a headache. Hard to duplicate unless you have a very large 3D TV.

I probably ought to work on my 70's viewing, get started on the Three Colors Trilogy, or work on watching some of the blind buys collecting dust in my collection, but I'm not sure that I have the attention span for something new (and especially something new and foreign) right now.

I think I'll do a rewatch instead, but what to choose? Some possibilities:

8MM
Titanic
American History X
Almost Famous
The Evil Dead (original)
Black Sheep (B horror flick, not the Chris Farley comedy)
Crazy Heart
Death to Smoochy
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Jurassic Park
The Prestige
Romper Stomper
Tropic Thunder
