Spectacular film. Loved it.
Wouldn’t call it “spectacular”, but I did finish it.

Impressive!
I have a fondness for such films. It’s no Bergman, but I really did like it.
On dubbed movies — I don’t mind subtitles at all (and I speak fluent Spanish) but yes, I would prefer it that more stuff was dubbed (I find on Prime hardly anything is). I understand the POV that dubbed films can feel inauthentic with historical figures like Franco and Hitler speaking English and whatnot, but I don’t feel that way at all. I got spoilt as a child by a huge film collection where everything was dubbed, so I guess subconsciously I do prefer that.

Nothing would make me watch a dubbed movie. I want to hear it in the original language with subtitles. I once watched a lovely movie or documentary about nomads in Mongolia. Came to re-watch it & it had been dubbed into “American”, which made zero sense.

Yeah, I can understand that. Some people I know struggle with reading subtitles and following the story at the same time (I know my mother does), so that could be part of it. Personally I just like seeing how jokes can be translated/adapted for different languages, and such. When something isn’t dubbed, which has overwhelmingly been my experience, I’ll watch it with subtitles.

You make a good point. I am a very fast reader (according to everyone else) so I have no trouble keeping up with subtitles. I won’t watch anything that doesn’t have subtitles, including English language movies & tv. People mumble!
Some people too don’t do subtitles because they find them hard to read.

Ironically, I do enjoy watching English-language movies with subtitles — more so than foreign ones. Yesterday I watched a Spanish horror film in its original language and with Spanish subtitles. That I decidedly prefer to having subtitles in a different language than the dialogue. On the plus side, you can always practise foreign languages by watching something in Spanish with French subtitles etc.

I don’t need the subs to be in a foreign language. Like I said I subtitle everything.
Watched a French movie recently (too lazy to look up its name) & the subtitles came on the screen a beat after the spoken dialogue instead of being simultaneous. Really annoying especially if more than one person was talking because then I didn’t know who had spoken.

It is exasperating when the subtitles are a little behind. I find this always happens with Prime but with Netflix — not so much. Then again, subtitles also quite often shorten the spoken phrase considerably which does affect the meaning somewhat.

Meaning is always affected when translating. And the other thing is that English language is very efficient in how much you can say in a given time frame.

Of course, I concur. I actually enjoy seeing which part of the phrase was ‘kept’ for the subtitles and which omitted as it’s quite telling, different people will put the emphasis on different things, etc.

Of course. The person onscreen can say 50 words & we get 10 words in translation. Doesn’t bother me particularly.

This one is really very obscure. Apparently, she thinks it’s her worst movie. I’d say it’s fine, not bad at all — a little campy, perhaps.
It is?
Generally English language words are short. That fact partially explains the vastness of similar or the same sounding words with different meanings. English are masters of semantic humor. Other part of explanation would be sheer number of words- most words of any language in the world.
Sorry for convoluted reply,- English is not my mother tongue, lol.

Kind of interesting - Ferrari - a biopic about the famous Enzo Ferrari, the guy who produced the beautiful, crazy-expensive sports cars that identify the rich and famous. It's focused on his early days as a race car team manager and car builder, with a team made up of those wonderfully sleek, red, speedsters with the rampant lion logo.
I don't know how the producers managed to get so many of these classic, super-expensive cars out on a risky race track, but it seemed like the footage was staged and not digital. The focus of the movie is Enzo himself, with his well known sunglasses and expensive suits, played with lots of bravado by Adam Driver. It's fun if you like Euro-road-racing, especially back in the 1950's when it was a death sport, not just for drivers, but also for spectators. One particular wreck in the movie was a recreation of one of those awful, gruesome, flaming, real-world wrecks that killed dozens of spectators and maimed dozens more.
In a world where car racing flix that are well done are rare, this one is pretty good.

Right. Well. I hated the short story, but I love Cousin Greg, so this’ll be fun.
https://pics.filmaffinity.com/Cat_Person-539690970-large.jpg
Isabella Rossellini is in this? I’m confused.
Well, it’s somewhat better than I expected so far, perhaps because it does veer into the horror territory more than the story. Nicholas Braun is much better here than the girl imo, but then I do always like his vibe. Overall Robert is definitely profoundly weird, which is the point, but he’s also kind of… feel for him, maybe because he’s traditional.
Feels like a bizarre and uneven thing regardless, though not in a bad way. I always felt for Robert in the story, if anyone (definitely not Margot), and the same applies here. Margot seems quite confused about her own life philosophy and all sorts of things — I suppose that’s intentional, but it prevents me from feeling for her much. The myrmecology angle feels forced and random (it’s the fashionable thing of giving female protagonists who were ‘unemployed’ in the source material a vocation to supposedly make them more human — as a review of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella said last year, giving a female character a job doesn’t make her any deeper or more interesting per se). I find it very believable that Robert would be into ants but Margot — not so much.
Despite all this, so far I’m quite enjoying the thing for some reason.
Margot’s family being wealthy is a bit random.
The mother is actually pretty likeable and wise, though it’s all ****ing depressing. The Marilyn Monroe bit was funny.
Relate to the asexual ex somewhat. He’s funny. I have a good friend who recently went through an asexual ex and I feel for her, but I probably feel for him a little more.
Margot imagining what ‘busy week at work’ might look like is hilarious.
Them talking about film all the time is very meta but a bit odd here, doesn’t seem to have a particular raison d’être.
Margot thinking about being murdered is sad and incredibly believable.
So bloody annoying that she talks during the movie all the time. Would send me over the edge. Can’t imagine going on a date to the movies, feels so high stakes. (That’s the whole point, I guess — he loved the movie and she hated it, and that can totally be a dealbreaker). I actually did cave about two years ago and went to watch ‘Smile’ which I loved but the guy really ruined for me, but at least it wasn’t my first viewing.
What on Earth is the problem with Margot being twenty?! What the hell is wrong with people?! I will never understand humans. Of course any ‘progressive’ movie has to shit on age gap relationships.
The scenes with Robert’s (imaginary, I take it) therapist are hilarious.
Right, so my verdict is that this film fails at what it’s trying to do because I kind of love Robert?! (Surely that’s not the point). Margot dissing Indiana Jones removed the last vestiges of my sympathy for her. She is a spoilt brat. (Joking, but only just). The film seems to justify contempt towards Depeche Mode and anything pre-noughties, it seems (well, I say that, but Margot listens to Britney). I kind of agree with the mother: what an unfortunate young lady Margot is.
The sex is beautifully revolting — kudos on that. The unbelievable stuff he says is just… Christ almighty. Wow. I have not squirmed this much in a really long time. The ‘good girl’ bit takes the biscuit though.
This is actually a pretty accurate take on the story, I’ll give it that.
The trend of giving friends access to one’s phone is utterly incomprehensible to me.
That final text chain is pretty horrific, I’ll give it that.
Never thought I’d say that, but I… liked this? That in itself is no mean feat on the movie’s part.
The ending seemed better in the short story, though.
Found this one quite interesting:

'Preciate the suggestion. I too am sick of some of the Limburger being put out today. So I fired up Dressed to Kill (1946), and loved it.
I've likely seen the majority of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce Holmes series, but it was nice to get back to them. Such an engaging duo, and Rathbone certainly defined the role.
In modern times I really enjoyed the series Sherlock (210-2017) with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Cumberbatch imbued Holmes with an off-beat, almost neurotic flavor which fitted the character well.

Thanks for flagging that! Added to watchlist. I don’t think I’ve ever properly seen it — long overdue. Always down for a neurotic Holmes (I say that as someone who’s historically felt none of the adaptations pay sufficient attention to the cocaine addiction, but I guess one can’t have everything. Never liked the Downey Jr. stuff much, though it tried to honour that).
The Basil Rathbone series is charming (and at times disarmingly so). I’m watching it out of order whenever I’m down for something old-fashioned and reliable — expect to get back to it tomorrow.

Too bad, I thought it was pretty good. (https://www.movieforums.com/reviews/2391452-edward_ii.html) And I loved how it escalated as it went on.
It has not been smooth sailing for me with this one (took me absurdly long to even get a hold of it as it never seemed to be available in the U.K., so lots of hassle there; then when I did, it wouldn’t load; the screen kept randomly cutting to black and it took me a while to gather this wasn’t authorial intent).
It’s odd that it didn’t work for me because this seemed like something I’d love on paper (I adore Tilda and I do miss my sexy LGBT films; besides, it’s a thoroughly postmodern film, which again, technically I should have loved). It could be that I was just in the wrong mood for it… But it was more probably the set-up that got to me, the way it’s so explicitly framed as a play and shot on a stage, and how modern clothes randomly make an appearance, then go away. This isn’t something I usually dig as it really takes me out of the story (though there are exceptions — I think the stage does work in Dogville). Then again, I didn’t find the attraction/passion/chemistry — whatever you want to call it — between Edward and Gaveston convincing (gimme some Hannibal, people…?).
The fact that everyone spoke in Marlowe’s original language also didn’t help (again, I’m sure there have been exceptional cases where I didn’t hate that, but it’s usually something that takes me out of the story). Maybe I’m just not in the right headspace for this stuff right now (I used to think I loved Orlando, which is quite similar and has the magical realism dimension to boot, but recently rewatched it and… Meh. Didn’t do anything for me at all.) Ah well, my horizons definitely haven’t been expanded enough yet Jeff.
I enjoyed your review, Takoma — unlike you, I do love my ‘terrible people being terrible’ entertainment, but I agree with many of your points, such as the lack of wholesome sex (I would call it the lack of ‘sexy’ sex but I do think we’re making a similar sort of point — there’s little sex, or much else, to root for). Also concur that Gaveston being terrible works and is somewhat ironic.
Which reminds me I really need to get a grip and start posting reviews in the reviews section. Never say never.
I love Jarman but Edward II is one of my least favorite of his, he had 2 kinds experimental and narrative The Last of England and Caravaggio are the best of each for me.

Was a classic provocateur, also found War Requiem extraordinarily moving, if you see that, the emotional peak for me there is when Tilda Swinton twirls her hair while that mighty Benjamin Britten music plays.

I watched all of his films, in order, last year. I really clicked with him. The way he frames images and the way he sustains high emotional charge are just really excellent.

These types of films can be hit or miss for me also. I think that deliberate artifice (shot on a clear stage, mixing modern style with original text, etc) either sings or it's incredibly grating.
Jarman does this same thing a few times in other films---mixing classic dialogue with more modern scenes. I would think you'd enjoy Sebastiane.

Putting this on hold, but it's very good, the author lady's speech early on was studded with resonate observations and ruminations, about the bittersweet realities, human tendencies leaving much to be desired, vastly prefer 70's Ken over 90's Ken.

[Sherlock (210-2017)] Thanks for flagging that!
I think you'll like the series. My description of Cumberbatch portraying Holmes as "neurotic" is really not the right word, but his Holmes is very eccentric.
Also Martin Freeman plays a very intelligent sidekick to Holmes --more as he was portrayed in the novels-- in contrast to Nigel Bruce's rather dim bulb portrayal.

Thank you! I’ll get right on it then. Nigel Bruce was indeed a bit of a clueless Watson, but oh, well. I’m sure there was some reasoning behind it at the time, and I did enjoy how it was played for laughs.

Well, this was good for what it was. Stirchley, Elordi is indeed fantastic in it, it’s almost creepy what a good Elvis he makes (much better than Austin Butler imo). Other than that, the film is fine. It doesn’t make any sort of interesting point about, well, anything, but I suppose one can’t expect too much. It was nice to hear an instrumental version of a good Santana song in the soundtrack. To be fair, Priscilla actually comes off as likeable.

It was pretty confusing; I find ensemble cast shows are very hit and miss, and it is often hard to follow who is who and what’s what (it had two timelines too, which just compounds the problem). This one was by no means perfect, but I really enjoyed it, it had good music and some quite engaging storylines.

Watched Nomadland last night. Such a naturalistic piece of worked helped by the use of non-actors/real nomads. Frances McDormand is such a talent that she manages to integrate herself into scenes with non-actors without it feeling like you're looking at a pro and an amateur. There isn't that disconnect. Terrific.

It has stayed with me, and that’s saying something. It’s not particularly original, and some bits have rather obviously been lifted off recent successful stuff, but it does have a certain vibe, pace and bizarre flair. It almost partly feels like a giallo? Not sure how else to put it.

Cocaine Bear is, at times, incredibly funny and a wonderful example of camp done right. The wheels come off a bit in the last act as they try to bring the plots together. The first third suffers from spending too much time with the kid characters (who don't quite have the right grasp on the dialogue's tone). But it stands as one of my favorite theater experiences of 2023. I was supposed to meet a friend, but he got confused about the day, so I showed up to the theater and was like, "Dang it! I'm going to watch SOMETHING!". I picked Cocaine Bear and it was a great choice.
For me, personally, it really benefits from not including much animal cruelty----yes, the CGI bear is very high and sometimes falls down or whatever, but clearly isn't really being hurt---and from making it really a "nature is wild" antagonist instead of implying the bear is evil or something. It's just high! It just wants more of that sweet, sweet cocaine!

I am at my wits’ end from lack of good horror, so looked up some relatively obscure stuff I hadn’t seen that’s meant to be like some of my favourites. This… isn’t super-engaging, but ah, well. Even I with my anti-feminist worldview though setting up the contrast between the more ‘hotter’ and the less attractive actress was a bit lame. Obviously, that’s not the most fundamental difference between them, and in many ways I like that it goes there, but at the very least I’d rather the less conventionally attractive actress be the successful one (and the ‘sexier’/desired one). Anyway. It’s fine, but something about it seems so simplistic, it totally lacks nuance.

I mean, I liked that the kids swore. I thought they were believable and likeable. But yeah, I mean, it’s no masterpiece, but hilarious it sure is.
I so agree on animal cruelty. I can’t quite recall what, but I wasn’t able to properly watch some wartime thing recently because a horse died on screen. I also still haven’t seen Napoleon for that reason. I love The Nest, but find it so depressing, mainly because of the horse storyline.

I didn't mind that they swore. It's more---and I don't want to drag kid actors---that I didn't think that some of their line readings were very good. There was more than one time where I thought, "That was the take they went with?!". And when you combine medium line readings with kids swearing, it starts to come off a bit contrived.

There are kids who sound like they actually swear in real life, and kids who sound like they are thrilled and a little uncertain about getting to swear. I thought the kids in the movie sounded more like the latter. (I have a few kids in my classroom who are very much in the former category!)

This was excellent. Hüller sure is phenomenal. A film that leaves one utterly breathless. Then again, I find that ‘the banality of evil’-type films tend to work for me.
Noticed that Hüller has a strange, waddling gait here — intentional, I assume, as she doesn’t seem to do this elsewhere (I’ve been watching her since Anatomy of a Fall). The flashes were a bit confusing, and I wasn’t sure why there were subtitles in the scene where the girl plays the piano as there was no singing. How are we supposed to know what the words relate to, are these her thoughts? Strange.

I liked ‘Air’ better, but this is fine. Nothing much. Seen an article somewhere lately (didn’t read the whole thing) saying the market is oversaturated with origin stories, and this is definitely the case imo.
I would probably even put this in the category of ‘failure stories’ (not that this is much of a genre). Which is in itself fascinating, as I’ve always been interested in narratives where things really fail (not the Hero’s Journey-type fail, but really, definitively fail, as it were).

This is entertaining so far, but I’m always perplexed by films where the two leads speak with incredibly thick accents throughout the first 20 minutes. It’s absolutely unbearable. This is why I think everything needs dubbing. I understand the language barrier is intentional but it’s so annoying.
Bizarre film. Annoying. One of the most irritating things I’ve ever seen.

It’s very good once you get used to the Galician. Enjoyed it much more this time around.
I am finally getting around to watching Nolan's recent short film.

Until about 75% through, I thought this was fantastic. Then once we get to the Dream House meets Haute Tension stuff, I don’t know. At least here it does apparently serve to illustrate working through internal homophobia and whatnot, but still, really ruins the thing. Perplexing to see it labelled as ‘fantasy’ all over the place, including reviews — since when does something happening entirely in the protagonist’s head count as fantasy? Ah well. Started off so sexy. Shame, real shame.

Now and again, you need a good disaster movie to readjust your attitude. Right now, it's Dante's Peak, a rarity among disaster movies since there's not a villain except for a big force-of-nature volcano. It's a little town in the northwest, inhabited by pretty folks like Pearce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton (plus a supporting cast of less pretty folks). All you need to know is that the volcano decides that this is the right millenium to erupt. There's running and screaming and lots of stuff being incinerated by lava bombs as well as lava streams. What's the lesson here? It's that, no matter how movie-world photogenic you are, volcanos really just don't care. They erupt on their own time scale and there's not much you can do except to just get the heck out of the area.

Having read several long, scientific books on this, I do appreciate how this movie gets to the heart of the project. Oppenheimer is such an odd misfit of a character to have changed the world so much. I just wish they had given a bit more footage to another of the characters in the real world project, Leo Szilard. He was a geekier guy than Oppenheimer, and was a big part of the project, although he did not have that great, iconic hat.

Tonight I plan to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. A little while ago I set myself the challenge to watch every film directed by Kubrick in release order. Of course, I had seen many of his films already, as is the case for 2001, but when I started the challenge many of his earlier films were a first watch for me and I have still yet to watch Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut for the first time. It has been some time since I last watched a Kubrick film and as I am currently lying down in a space pod (a space-themed hostel capsule) I thought that this would be a great time to continue where I left off.

Mountains are OK. It's just those volcanos that are a problem to be solved only by distance.

Not what I expected. A very good film, but so disheartening. A heavily pregnant woman/new mother exclusively catering to the people around her and trying to make everyone else except for herself feel better. Comer’s character directly says to her boyfriend, ‘I’ll look after you the way you’ve looked after me’ but I see no evidence that anyone took care of her. (I mean, yes, she tells people that the boyfriend did take care of her for a bit, but I don’t know). Gives birth alone, acts as a therapist to boyfriend and his father who are both weepy whiners. So ****ing depressing. I suppose that does make one back the protagonist but how awful. Not sure why so many films have weepy useless men in the last ten years. Ah yes, breaking stereotypes, that must be it. All the boyfriend does is whine about how things ‘feel’.
Watchable though, very much so.
Gotta give it to the protagonist, she is cool. Hat off. Overall, I really enjoyed this. Impressed that no one died, not the protagonist nor the baby or the boyfriend. That’s harder to pull off than multiple deaths.

xSookieStackhouse, I thought the music was pretty good (but then I do love blues). I didn’t think the story was anything special/particularly engaging, but overall, not a bad film, I’d say do give it a try. I suppose it can be seen as a feel-good film.
