In Cold Blood (1967)

I'd seen this years ago, but watched it again after viewing the two films about Truman Capote last year.
I can appreciate what the film was trying to do with the settings, music, b&w cinematography, flashbacks and giving it a certain "noir" feeling, but after a second viewing I still don't see what all the fuss is about.
It's certainly not bad, but I've heard that this film is somehow genius. Even the first time I viewed it was because a friend rented it after he'd heard how avant garde and edgy it was.
So I still don't get what makes this film so special apart from a dozen other murder thrillers. Maybe someone can explain it to me?

P.S. I liked seeing Scott Wilson. First time I saw In Cold Blood, Scott didn't register (there was no reason for him to at that time), but this time I kept saying, "I know that face! Where have I seen him before?"
It took a few minutes, but it finally clicked - I knew a much older version of Scott Wilson from his playing Hershel on The Walking Dead!

Tonight - Harry and Tonto (w/ Director's Commentary) - After this, it might be a while before I see this. I got the DVD a few weeks ago, it didn't work on my DVD player or on the laptop; this time it only worked on the laptop. Luckily, I just got a flat-screen TV from my sister so I can hook up the HMDI cable so I don't have to watch on the laptop.

I've only recently seen the Shawshank Redemption after a long campaign of badgering from friends and family, and I have to admit that its a shame that it took me so long to watch it. Never saw this version before. Took me a while, but I ended up enjoying it.
There wasn't a lot to follow as it's mostly pantomime with a few made-up cave man words.
The special effects were a really mixed bag - it's like the movie didn't know what direction to take and settled for everything from Elephants & cows wearing costumes & make-up (for Mammoths and Water Buffalo) to guys wearing rubber dinosaur suits, to blown up super-impositions of real lizards & small mammals - some of these were re-used for decades after, appearing in many other films.
Some laughable parts were Victor Mature wrestling a small plastic Triceratops (guess it was supposed to be a baby). My favorite super-imposed animal was an Armadillo made up to look like an ancient Anylosaurus (I believe). A volcano & earthquake are handled pretty well with some pretty convincing falling rock scenes, but one special effect that blew me away was a hapless cave-woman being completely engulfed in hot lava!

I found it on TCM On-Demand.

Carol is pretty sexy (sad she committed suicide in real life.) The beginning of the movie had Ben Mankiewicz giving some info - I always like that about TCM - and he said how Carol Landis would have rated in the sex-symbol / pin-up world with the likes of Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable, but due to her troubles, came to a tragic end.

Another hilarious bit was some of the sounds the dinosaurs make - one sounds like a cougar, but the big dinosaur they fight at the end (a super-imposed iguana) sounds like they mixed lion growls with (I kid you not...) a German Shepherd bark! It had me laughing out loud whenever the iguana barks like a dog!

Just finished watching Before Sunrise (1995). I have to say, that was a cute movie. While the deep and intellectual discussions were a bit overbearing at times (i mean, who actually does that) it was very sweet and heartfelt overall. The actors have a great chemistry and it's hard to believe they were just reciting scripts. Very romantic, will definitely watch again.:blush:
