Not a ringing endorsement, but I guess I shall see what it’s all about. Liking the visuals so far

I was underwhelmed by it. The woods are gorgeous, the actors are solid (and also gorgeous), but it lost me the more it went on.

I'm going to give some of those "adult animation" Batman films a go. I don't mean dirty XXX adult pictures. I mean PG-13- and R-rated films. The library has an 18-film collection of them that I requested before I realized it had 18 films. I mostly wanted one film, and got 18. That's fine though since I don't pay for them and I can have the DVDs for up to nine weeks. I just have to watch an average of two per week and I'll be golden. Here's a picture of the collection in question:

Right now I'm watching my favorite film.

It's somewhat new. It came out in 2021.

Re: Voyeurs; I ended up pausing the movie last night because I nearly fell asleep watching it. Not because the movie is bad but because I was exhausted. I can try to get to it tonight although it's very child-unfriendly and the childs are here tonight. I may watch Gotham Knight instead since I have it from the library.

Not really although there is a possible similarity. The movie I'm watching has Sydney Sweeney and her partner spying on their neighbors through really huge windows on both sides of their apartments, hence my previous Rear Window comments, although, judging by the first half hour or so, Sydney Sweeney's character Pippa seems rather keen on her male neighbor on whom they're spying. Whether there's a sordid love affair between the two I don't know vis I haven't made it that far yet but the last five minutes or so I watched had a lot of shots of her staring longingly at the fellow.

That's just what I've seen. I'll have to keep watching to find out. I just need to find a time to watch it. It has some rather raunchy content. There have been three sex scenes already and I'm thirty minutes into it. Two of them happened at the same time.

Oh. Yeah that part is similar. This one is rather erotic too. I don't know if I can recommend this Voyeurs by Michael Mohan because I haven't finished it yet. I will probably post a paragraph of thoughts once I finish it though if you're still curious. I'm fine with erotic content for myself. It wouldn't load for some reason. My browser didn't like something. Yeah yours sounds interesting. The household isn't too keen on eroticism so I have to be careful. I started Voyeurs by myself last night which was for the best.

Some of it can be a little uncomfortable for me though. I read an exchange from Dressed to Kill with Michael Caine and it was kind of weird. "Don't you want to 'screw' me?" "I'm your doctor." "I've 'screwed' many doctors." "That'd be unethical." "You want to 'screw' me, don't you doctor?" Maybe I don't want to watch this movie after all...

And then Voyeurs is engaging and keeps me interested. Is that inconsistent? I don't know that it's a thriller but it doesn't have a weird exchange like that. Yet. I don't think Pippa is a doctor though she works with an optometrist. I can't remember what her boyfriend does.

I don't know if you were interested in Voyeurs what I was watching except I just finished it and found it of quality. The ending put a smile on my face though I won't say why. I will let you discover that on your own if you ever want to watch it. The movie almost made me mad, and then it corrected itself. It was quite the "Aha!" moment.

Addendum; hopefully some time today I can find time for Tootsie. I have it on loan from the library so I really need to watch it. I might watch an animated Batman movie too.

MovieGal, below are some of my thoughts (just got out of the theatre.

My feelings about this film are very mixed. I watched it with someone who hated it, to the point that she spent the latter half of the film on her phone and even moved to answer the phone when it rang (I put an end to that). That in itself was unpleasant, but it didn’t affect my own perception much. I mention it because I found myself adopting a position of apologia, almost, given how vehemently she disliked the film. We left the theatre and she kept asking me ‘what it all meant’ and ‘what the film was trying to say’. I had barely been able to pull together my own thoughts on the matter, but I found that while I didn’t think it was particularly good, I did like some parts of it and found various little details to be of interest. I enjoyed it very much as an experience, and the subject is one I find fascinating.

I managed to know next to nothing about this going in, and nothing that was said here certainly made me any the wiser in terms of plot. That was helpful. I thought the imagery of some of the cardinals sitting outside ‘playing on their smartphone’ before the conclave begins was absolutely striking and to me, it was a pretty good foreshadowing of what the film is really ‘about’. There absolutely is a certain ridiculousness to the ritualistic aspect of religion in this day and age, and it’s unreasonable to pretend that it doesn’t jar with the tech world. The attempt to maintain separation from the outside world, avoid using the internet even to snoop on candidates’ past and such is a case in point. It’s such bizarre, irrational and self-destructive behaviour but it underscores how irrational the institution of organised religion as a whole feels in this day and age. It’s very arbitrary to decide not to use the internet when it’s right there to be used, and the film really drives home the arbitrary nature of the church as a whole.

To me, the film was mainly about the futility of trying to find a middle ground between tradition and ‘modernity’/‘liberalism’ (which I realise may sound a bit 'rich’, given the ending seems to imply exactly the opposite, that tradition has lost, etc.). But I felt, despite the multiple references to doubt and needing to be humbled by one’s own doubt at times, that the film sort of ends up saying the opposite: there can’t be a middle ground if the church is to maintain any semblance of doctrine, order and internal discipline (which is severely lacking throughout the film, and to me that’s a direct consequence, diegetically within the film’s universe, of the church becoming less certain of itself). I, personally, am a relativist in the broadest sense of the word when it comes to most things, but what the film ended up saying to me was that without the steadfast, tradition-first leadership of someone like Tedesco, the chief descends into farce and undignified internal strife, which is exactly what we see throughout the film. This last point is half in jest, but I think through a humorous lens it’s not hard to see the explosion hitting the window as God ‘smiting’ the conclave for making the ‘wrong’ decision

Beyond that, there were quite a few moments when the entire audience laughed hysterically (Rossellini’s very rude curtsey). I found those hilarious too, won’t mention what the others were as that’s not the point, but this film definitely benefits from being seen on the big screen where one can observe the live audience reaction.

I think this is a film where much of the intrigue and mystique comes from the fact the inner goings of the Catholic Church, especially ecclesiastical elections, are still so arcane and unfamiliar to the general public (the very idea of an election seems counter-intuitive). To that end, I thought the film was ‘interesting’ in the pure sense of the word, in that it generated and maintained interest in the mechanics of that world and its inner politics. The point that people are incredibly fallible no matter who they are is trite and tired, but I don’t think it’s intended as the focus/core message. I’m probably semi-purposefully reading it ‘wrong’, but I think that while what Lawrence is doing is coming from a good place and he’s trying to do the ‘right thing’, follow the late Pope’s wishes, listen to his own heart and experience and so on, it ends up causing more harm than good, and to me he (and the conclave) ends up making the wrong choice. I feel this is telegraphed rather too much because the suicide bomber attack happens after Benitez begins to gain support but before his speech, which to me feels like the conclave being ‘smitten’ as they are on the wrong track and decided on the wrong course of action (with Benitez gaining support).

I doubt that was the intended conclusion, but that’s how I read it. What the ultimately chosen Benitez professes and preaches is the so-called ‘Liberation Theology’ (which makes sense, seeing as it it originated in Latin America). The issue with Liberation Theology is that it aggressively politicises religion, and much as we might all say religion is by default political, thus makes it explicitly so, and I don’t feel anything good can ever come of that. I’m not going to say this is a ‘woke’ ending, heh, but it is an ending in favour of reform and change that purposefully puts down tradition (no character professing traditionalism is given the time of day to state their position, traditionalists like Tedesco get no screen time at all, other than where other people criticise them as bigoted and backward. We aren’t offered even a rudimentary summary of what the traditionalist position actually is, what it stands for, why it might be reassuring in a chaotic world, why it has endured for centuries on end). But as someone socially conservative, I tend to read such things as the last hopeless hurrah for the classic, traditional Catholic Church, which simple doesn’t seem to have any relevance whatsoever in the modern world and society, especially if it keeps making such anti-traditionalist choices.

Lawrence feels like a tragic figure because while he embraces doubt, and of course that’s essential, he seems far too deep in a crisis of faith of his own to offer/maintain the sort of discipline that’s needed to steer the church through this conclave or beyond (he is, after all, its second most senior figure). He inspires much sympathy in this regard, but he also does take very active steps to affect the outcome of the election. That’s understandable given his character the way it’s written (it’s an aspect of personality, not his position), but I also think there is, ironically, a distinct lack of humbleness in his actions and that is also part of why he isn’t fit to be pope himself: he doesn’t have that inner authority, which I feel is in no way antithetical to embracing doubt. Anyway, this is a film I feel people will interpret extremely differently depending on their personalities and worldviews, which sounds like a ridiculously banal thing to say, but I see a huge dichotomy here between men of action and men of tradition, as it were, and how both types choose to see the world.

On a completely irrelevant note, it was strange to watch this just as the Notre-Dame is about to reopen.

Tonight I'll finish Tootsie. Michael Dorsey, aka Dorothy Michaels, is a clod. I get that's the point. It doesn't mean I have to like his character. The movie is interesting. I'm waiting to see what happens when it's revealed to everyone, and not just his agent and Bill Murray, that Dorothy Michaels is really the least hirable man in New York.

I'm watching Dead Zone today. It might be a rewatch although I remember nothing of the movie. I remember the book okay, which the book is quite good. I started the movie and I think a package just got here and I need to check so I paused the movie.

The traffic collision is really tame. I expected more from Cronenberg. Oh well. We'll see how it goes. I've only just started it.

I'm exactly an hour into Dead Zone. I won't finish it yet since I have a thing in fewer minutes than the amount remaining so I'll get to it later. It's a good movie although some of it is written poorly. "I need something the killer touched." Oh like those cigarette butts two feet from you? "His patrol car is out front." The other officer said he stole yours though... Then he kills himself with scissors in the mouth except the two ends went into his gums and nowhere, so how did he die and with that much blood?

Hm Christopher Walken once said his only movie kiss was Burton's Sleepy Hollow, and yet he is wrong; it was at least his third film with one. He kissed Meryl Streep in Deer Hunter, and his love interest in Dead Zone. Actually you could say fourth for Sleepy Hollow, although I'm not sure how much he kissed Cat Woman in Batman Returns when she electrocuted the two of them and fried him.

A tad annoyed that a headline spoilt the plot for me, and equally annoyed that it’s apparently part-comedy, but still, should be interesting.
Okay, so far, I’m somewhat disappointed… On philosophical grounds, as it were. It’s definitely an unusual film, but I’m so fed up with the negativity about motherhood in contemporary stuff. I want to see a deliriously happy mother protagonist, like a Colgate commercial.
Anyway, I quite literally cried all the way through this film (which some outlets call a comedy?!) from sheer frustration and sadness, so I guess my judgment is compromised. I’ve got to give it to this one, it’s a much more well-rounded take than Tully, and even the conclusion is optimistic, but I still feel the very decision to portray motherhood like this is, as they say, a political statement in itself, and I emphatically dislike it. So that’s that. I tend to see these films
gratuitous in the same way that people call Eli Roth and torture porn gratuitous. I suppose here the ‘misery’ of motherhood is the entire purpose of the thing being made, but I take massive issue with that on a personal level. Lucy Denver wrote a review in The Telegraph that pretty much echoed my thoughts. Granted, ‘happy’ instances of anything are harder to make interesting and have less inherent ‘tension’, but to me it would be far more compelling to see perhaps a young(er) mother revelling in motherhood and her baby — not because this is rare, but because the film industry seems compelled to ignore such instances.
Amy Adams is always amazing, though, and boy, does she have incredible hair.

I think that there's an interesting idea in there that this "transfer" process the aliens do would also carry over emotions like love or anxiety, but it just doesn't go anywhere great.

The best element is the moment where you realize (BIG SPOILERS) that she's known for a while that he's an impostor because she saw the body in the cave. That's a great retrospective OHHHHHHH!!!! moment. But then it doesn't really advance from that point.

It almost reminded me of Upstream Colour, which, though it barely had any plot at all, did seem to explore similar themes with a bit more nuance.

Interesting — I thought she assumed he was dead but it could be I wasn’t paying attention. I was very confused by some bits of it because to me, her decision to push him off the cliff seems completely demented and not really justified at all in the narrative, but also I would think that anyone would think he died after that…

Alas, I’m not rewatching that to see how it holds up.

So there's a time-jump/flashback element. She goes into the cave and sees the dead body of her boyfriend and realizes that he's an impostor, THEN she pushes him off of the cliff. We learn after she pushes him that she knew he was an alien/creature who took the shape of her boyfriend.

So we're meant to think she pushes him because she's nuts, but then later realize she was defending herself

Yes, I recall your stance on that — fair enough. Strangely it has coloured my own perception of him too, though that isn’t usually the case for me.

Yes, that was a good one. I like most of what Almodóvar does.

No guarantee that it would be better, of course, but I feel a move away from ‘misery porn’ could only be for the best. Even the big budget stuff feels very trite with how few characters have genuinely great, fulfilling sex, genuinely love spending time with their kids, like their spouses etc. And if that’s supposed to reflect reality — well, yes, but that all does exist. Maybe I’m paying too much attention to it.

I think that it's more that these are ways to easily derive conflict.

But I agree that a lot of films retread the presentation of the same types of conflict without saying anything about it. I just watched Vivarium and, like, you'll never believe this, but did you know that sometimes people feel pressured to be a perfect family and end up trapped in the suburbs?!

Lol, right? I kind of like Vivarium — just my brand of weird. But to your point, the conflict did feel a little bit artificial there.

I just didn't think it was a feature-length worthy premise.

It feels very repetitive once they find the baby. The central relationship between the two characters was never well developed, so there are no stakes as the stress drives a wedge between them.

I also don't love that the movie gives away everything in literally the opening credits. The baby is an impostor and they're being forced to raise it. And . . . that's it.

I think, on reflection, the problem for me is that the main characters end up being far too passive. There's no grit to it, no matter how many times Poots says, "I'm not your f*cking mother."

Right now I'm in the middle of a documentary on D&D art. It's too noisy in the house for me to feel comfortable adding to the pandemonium. The documentary is kind of interesting. It's getting repetitive. There's only so many ways fifteen people can say, "D&D art is cool."

Addendum; they discussed more than just thinking D&D art is cool. They went over the history of how they developed D&D art and what lead to various parts of its history. It got better as it went.

I want to watch Twelve O'Clock High this evening too. I want more support for my right leg right now because the weather changed and is messing with my hip so I'd love to sit in bed except I can't until the kiddos are asleep, so it'll be a few hours. Enounters at the End of the World. I'm a third through and I have to say that I'm constantly charmed, not just by the animals and the weird discoveries, like the recordings of seal communications, but of the people and their personalities. Herzog certainly knows how to get personal (so why the eff didn't he do that with Nosferatu?)

I plan to watch Twelve O'Clock High some time tonight. The house will be hectic for some time and I'll try anyway. I saw it many years ago and remember naught so it'd be nice to revisit it. We got talking about 1949 and it was nominated for Best Picture so I had the idea to watch the nominees from that year, having already seen the winner and one of the other nominees, Battleground I believe it is, so I'm going to tackle the other three at some point. Hopefully the first will be tonight.

Update: I'm 40 minutes into Twelve O'Clock High. I can see why it is a Best Picture nominee. The movie is solid. I'm not overly focused on it because the house is hectic. I'm able to follow it just fine regardless and I've really liked it so far. Peck as an Air Force general is cool. I think he's a general. Sometimes the audio isn't perfect so I can't pick up on every word. It's really getting to the meat of the story, and the boys are at the point of the night where they need to go to bed so I need to wait for a bit before resuming the film. Please don't think that as a negative. It's just what happens. Worse things have happened than taking a few minutes to put children to bed.

Oh my. I have like an hour left in Twelve O'Clock High and I am digging it. It's a great film. Peck is very stoic and commanding in his General role. The problem is I've had things draw my focus away from the movie. Today the kiddos had a snow day and their mom had my parents and I watch them while she worked and then it was onto football so I haven't had a chance to resume it yet. I swear the reason I've been watching it sporadically since Saturday is because I haven't found a good time to watch it and not because I've disliked it. Really the movie is fine. I really like it. It's just been a busy three days. Oh and these aren't complaints. Having the kiddos here is nice. We spend good time together and the movie has existed since 1949 so I know there's time to watch it.

Finishing the original Point Break. Honestly, Keanu challenges both the cheese and thrills of two different worlds: crime thrillers and surfer mentality, so well that it's impossible to see this strangely philosophical action film operate without cheese. It's basically telling us why we seek thrills in the first place, whether it's in our houses watching movies or out there risking our balls in a lightning storm.

Never heard of it. In a sentence, what’s it about?

It’s a road movie about an under-employed journalist who is stuck taking care of a nine-year-old girl after meeting her mother at an airport. It also explores immigration and the contrast between US and Europe, so I think you might enjoy it. I feel like it’s the best thing I’ve seen this year (recency bias, but still).

P.S. I hadn’t heard of it, either — I did a deep dive into Wenders’ filmography and found it by accident.

I've seen True Lies once and found it highly entertaining. I remember the first time I tried to watch it I was in too much pain and inexperienced with pain to really focus on it so I ended up getting doped up on pain killers and taking a nap. Then my mom put on the movie some other time years later, and I was in the room, so I decided to watch it vis I wasn't in pain I couldn't handle, and thought it was great. It's entertaining without trying to be anything else, which I do appreciate.

I experienced something similar but not in pain but severe cold/allergy. We went to see Fellowship of the Ring and I fell asleep during the Balog scene. Must have been from medication but I have seen that film 20+ times sine then. I do want to rewatch in the cinema though.

Yeah it sucks when it happens. I didn't not watch it because I thought the movie sucked. Nah I was sure True Lies was fine. I just hurt too much and needed to take care of that first. It's funny; my parents and I were discussing True Lies within the past few days about how it's just entertaining. Honestly I'm not a fan of James Cameron. I did like True Lies though. I've always liked Arnold (I can't spell his last name) and Jamie Lee Curtis.

How we feel can affect how we perceive a movie. Sometimes a movie can also help us feel better if it's a favorite. Mood and condition are very important. I remember rewatching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly because when I watched it the first time I had a pounding headache and I didn't feel I gave it my full attention. I didn't think it was bad except I couldn't concentrate on it very well. When I rewatched it I loved it because I hadn't a headache then.

My whole immediate family went to see it in the cinema and the five of us all had different specific reactions and they were all positive. We all liked something different the most. I don't remember specifics now, I think the movie came out in 2007 so me remembering something that far back is a shot in the dark, although it can happen.

Anyway I don't remember what I liked most. I think it was either the brothers fighting or the witches hunting the star. I think it's based on a book. The movie is fluffy, and it's a good fluffy. I use "fluffy" like "popcorn movie".

So far, I’m loving it. So strange and enjoyable. Never thought I’d say that. To be fair, the guy is irresistible. Nicole sure looks ****ing incredible too (breaking hearts since Practical Magic, huh.)
Hated the husband even though I personally love Banderas, but I guess that’s the point.
Some stuff is a bit cringe (like Esme), and the lesbian daughter with the punk haircut was unnecessary, but overall this was very cool. I’m still in Ayn Rand mode and even see some influences here, but that’s not objective.
The husband is lame though, all that being said. Get that it’s intentional, but come on. Could he not have a personality at least? We needed a tortured-looking Brody here.

It's a favorite as well but I have to say Steve McQueen Hunger is my absolute favorite of The Troubles.

The intensity of the film, the brutality, the conversation between Liam Cunningham and Michael Fassbender, and to watch a body deteriorate due to lack of nutrition, is what makes it great.

That is an incredible film. Oddly enough, in my mind it almost registers as horror or at least as a horror-drama, so I feel like it’s about Bobby Sands himself, more so than The Troubles more broadly. But it is a bit of an arbitrary distinction.

I recently rewatched Yes, Minister and kept thinking about the above for some reason.

Found this very randomly, and it’s awesome.
‘Oh my God, it’s Deliverance’ is a line I didn’t know I needed.

I loved this movie.
I saw it in the theatre.

I would cry, wipe my tears and 5 minutes later cry again...it was like this through the latter half of the film.

The goal is to get to Godzilla Minus One either tonight or tomorrow. No D&D tomorrow so my schedule is free up, other than filming the last scene in a movie I'm making.

Addendum; I'll watch Godzilla Minus One tomorrow vis it's getting late tonight to watch a movie in the living room. Instead I'll watch Son of Batman in my bedroom on my computer (it's on Tubi). I've really enjoyed the animated Batman films. So far I've notched five. Most of them have been on Tubi, although watching them on disc is preferred.

This is a 90s film. My letterboxd said I watched it but I don't remember it. I know I watched it because Rachel is an amazing actress.

My favourite Christmas movie - Scrooged!

I still say 1980s Christmas movies (https://www.top10films.co.uk/9484-top-10-christmas-films-of-the-1980s/) are better than any other decade (Die Hard, Trading Places, Santa Claus: The Movie, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation). But there's a nostalgic bias in that. These are the films I grew up watching on TV as a kid.

That recently happened to me with Amy Adams’ Nightbitch, though I certainly didn’t ‘love’ it, it had just got me very upset and emotional somehow.

In any case, The Wild Robot sounds promising!

John Cleese hates the Bond movie names. He says they make no sense. He also says the movies make no sense, even though he's in some of them. He told Taylor Swift that.

Lol.

I like John Cleese and he has the right to his opinions.

I could care less about Taylor Swift.

I don't listen to her music and she's dating a thug look a like.

Yes I said this and I live in KC.

Just an observation.

I'm not a huge Bond fan. I've seen a handful of the films and they were all right. I've never been overly enthusiastic about them. The ones I've seen aren't bad. I just questioned a lot of their decisions.

They were on an episode of the Graham Norton Show together and discussed the Bond films. To be honest I don't care about her music either, and I don't like Travis Kelce (I don't like tight ends). Calling him a "thug look-a-like" is fairly accurate.

What a coincidence — my second film in a row with a Jimmy Durante soundtrack.
Absolutely LOVE this film and the soundtrack is spectacular!

The Haunting made my top 100. Now I'm on Collateral, and this has gotta be one of the coolest things I've ever seen so far.

One of the movies we've rewatched the most. Just comfortable and satisfying, with an ending that's not overdone.

I once had a discussion with a friend comparing this to the somewhat contemporaneous Four Weddings and a Funeral. He felt Four Weddings was a more authentic look at romantic love, and I had to set him straight that they were both old-fashioned throwbacks. Only Four Weddings was just a far too forgiving of unforgivable behavior.
