The most ridiculous thing by far however is two teenagers in 2018 writing emails to each other. “Nasty emails”. I hate social media, I really do, but that doesn’t mean one can afford to be that inaccurate in characterisation.

Bodies, Bodies, Bodies - It views itself as a "Wild Hilarious Whodunit", but really? Get a bunch of unruly, horny 20-somethings in a mansion with lots of booze, lots of cocaine and a hurricane. What could possibly go wrong with THAT? Having been (in real life) a young kid in what must have been one of the last ever "hurricane parties", I can tell you....a lot can go wrong with that, but the one I saw didn't include murder. In this flick, however, what goes wrong is a dead Pete Davidson. In short, Whodunit? Is it you or the woman over there with the attitude or the last person that saw the victim?
Being an updated version of lots of staid British murder movies, combined with scream queen elements of 80's slasher movies (where's Jamie Lee Curtis when we need her), you know it won't be murder with a candlestick in the arboretum. It will have lots of accusations, panic and more bodies will fall because of that. The power and phone towers will go out so most of the movie will be shot in the dark with cell phone flashlights with batteries that never go out.
It had me squirming in my seat, not because it was tense or because I cared who would be the first murderer (there were more after that), but because I know, deep in my heart that, out of my childhood wisdom, I would never stay in a house on the shore during a hurricane, especially with a bunch of coked up, drunk loonies. I'm smarter than that. Sadly, this movie isn't. It was "wild", but "hilarious"....no.

Loved it. My favourite Spinosi aria in the soundtrack too. My mum knows the guy, so always glad to see him getting traction. Somehow his stuff is always in horror films so far - another aria was in Violation. Perfect film for me.
Interesting that it was Welsh - felt more Nordic than that, Finnish/Danish maybe.

I love this movie. So very Sixties.
I've never said it before about any movie, but when I was watching it last night (and this morning), I actually said to myself, "This movie is very 60s", even the stylish editing. Had a middle-class psychedelic feel to it - "Day Trippers". Even the "New Age" parenting with Ruthie, "COMMUNIST!". The clothes, music, etc...
There's some good lines, and I wanted to give it a second shot after rating it a 6 or 7, but I think longer scenes might have helped out, and the jumping into three (or maybe more) different periods in their relationship wasn't beneficial to the story, but there's something special about it, too. I like Albert Finney, but I don't think this movie got the best out of him. Audrey was always too proper for me, not natural enough, but still, her presence probably helped the movie than having another random unknown actress with slightly more talent.. One good example of someone I like is Elizabeth Taylor. Ever see, "Secret Ceremony" with her and Mitchum? I saw it recently, twice in the past few years, and love those kinds of movies, eerie settings, more focused on people, instead of something like a character caper. Or Patricia Neal in "The Night Digger"?

Matt unrecognisable compared to The Sinner.
The plotting is kind of out there, but I love it. Very psychologically believable.

It genuinely interests me why such stuff always turns out bad. The concept of victim taunting burglar/kidnapper/whatever seems promising enough. The Deceiver, which is one of my favourite “guilty pleasure” films, is much sexier when it comes this imo, but same idea.

Watched "Running" last night. It was a fascinating piece, especially because we think we know the outcome.
He lived his later life as a fugitive, mostly real but part fantasy/paranoia. I can't help admiring the guy.
What did you think about his ex-girlfriend's statement at the end? She had such a cryptic look in her eyes. She'd been brutally honest all the way through, so I don't know why she would make up that story.
McAfee is certainly the type of guy who had the imagination and the wherewithal to fake his death, plus the Spanish authorities won't release his body for identification; so it sure makes one wonder. At the very least there's no question in my mind that if he's dead, it was a murder.

I've always liked rebels of any sorts. I recommend you watch the Jim Traficant documentary, which is available on vimeo and who knows where else.
I will say I preferred "Gringo" more.
I actually think if there's one person who would kill himself, it's McAfee. Besides the fact his father killed himself, McAfee was a miserable guy, and seemed to only look for people to use, paying everyone off as if they were for sale. I think he knew it was in his best interest to treat the people around him with respect. But, I think he loved knowing, "They're going to accuse the US government of killing me" - basically trolling them from his grave. Anyone else, I'd blame the government by default, but he even gets a tattoo "WHACKED" before-hand. I've seen over dozens of interviews, half of them when he was on the run. If you watch the interview I posted above, and then watch another one around the same time, you'll see the fake McAfee, who's trying to impress 25-yr old girls, talking about drugs, bitcoin, and his cadence, and phrases, just so phony, but that hour-long interview is very ... obvious (especially regarding privacy, CIA influence)..

This is actually a perfectly serviceable genre film. Very engrossing.
However I abhor the cliche of killing off the competent characters and leaving the idiots.
But then, I’ve always loved Sharlto Copley, so I guess I’m biased.

Yeah, I think Gringo was the better film of the two, although "Running" kept one glued to the screen as well.
The two reasons I don't think he committed suicide are that, 1. The Spanish authorities still won't release the body for examination after all this time, and, 2. He was/is a classic narcissist who believed he could get out of any scrape. That type is generally not suicidal.
Nice clip re Trafficant. I recall his tenure and his conviction. Tough guy.

In one of his last interviews, he seemed so resigned. "I'm 75 years" -- basically, "I had my fun -- I love freedom" so I still think it's possible he did, just to "troll" the governments he hates.
But, it's very possible we hear about him in Mexico.. Robert Maxwell (with the great kid - Ghislaine) faked his own death. "Media mogul" (Mossad) was caught eventually.
I think otherwise, he would have paid his taxes, or at least claimed money he made to be a free man, but he probably had enough, and his body/mind probably had enough. But again, maybe he had plans, and maybe someone else beat them to it.
I think the girlfriend at the end... anytime someone says, "I shouldn't be saying this", I think... "Sales pitch", but she could be truthful, because she was featured in "Gringo".
I'm from the Midwest, and Traficant was very popular here. Populist. And still the only one to beat a RICO case, defending himself, despite not being a lawyer. But they found a way to screw him. "Your employees painted your barn" -- "It was a bonding experience. Drank beers, painted a barn" and a few other things got him in the slammer. It's a great documentary - I have it around here somewhere.

The original Orphan impressed me back in the day. No, it wasn’t perfect, and some bits were corny, but other bits were incredibly astute, and the thing overall was original if lacking depth. It’s also not that farfetched, given what has been in the spotlight over the last decade about how illegal migrants try to hide their age and successfully pose as children.
I revisit it more in my mind than almost any such “schlock” horror.
Looking forward to this, then.

It was the movie Breaking this weekend. It's a somewhat true story about a traumatized military veteran, Brian Brown-Easley. He's minimally employed, very worried about the effect of his situation on his daughter. His thinking isn't quite clear and he's suffering from some sort of psychological problem. He goes into a bank, with the idea of robbing the bank, but only for the amount of money he is expecting from a benefits check, something less than $900. He gives a teller a note, saying that he has a C4 bomb in his backpack, is carrying a small device that he says will detonate the bomb. Most of the customers and employees are allowed to leave, but now, he's locked into the bank with 2 employees and his bomb. He says that he doesn't want to hurt anybody, but the detonator and apparent bomb seem to belie that.
It's not surprising that authorities react, police and SWAT team arrive in force and surround the bank. In addition Federal guys come, inserting themselves into the situation along with a hostage negotiator. The crisis goes on for hours and becomes a public event.
Brian is played by John Boyega, but I'm not familiar with the rest of the cast in this sad drama, all of whom are quite good. Boyega is excellent at conveying Easley's desperation, his slim hold on rationality and his desire to somehow try to find something OK in his life. It's a sad story without an obvious way out. I felt that it went on a bit too long but I did really feel for this unfortunate guy. Being fact-based, I read the bio of the actual person. It's obvious that his story is more complex, but the movie is quite accurate in the events that are portrayed.
This is somewhat of a recommendation. It's not the movie for a fun night, but it's definitely very well done and very dramatic.

The sequel is immeasurably better.
I thought the de-aging technique on Isabelle worked fine, but otherwise, I’m perplexed at how while making a sequel to your own film you allow so many inconsistencies to creep in, such as that originally Esther was supposedly adopted from Russia and the name of the family whose house burned down. That said, I don’t actually feel like it’s that much of a plot hole, as we get most of this information from the orphanage/the sisters, who could well be confused/not care (bureaucracy wears everyone down, and orphanages are way too understaffed/overworked to be able to remember everything).
Nonetheless, for the love of Christ, the language that the Saarne Institute employees are speaking is not Russian (!!!). Yet we have actual official subtitles saying “Russian, speaking in Russian” etc. Russia and Estonia, alas, are not the same country anymore (besides, they confirm two minutes later on in the film that Esther came from Estonia). Facepalm.
The filmmakers obviously cannot (and should not be able to!) reverse-engineer the first film, Stranger Things-style, but making sure the sequel doesn’t openly contradict it is the least they could do! Especially given it’s the same people making the thing.

The Good Boss tonight - It's a Spanish language film from Spain, with subtitles, a dark comedy, somewhat like the more pungent moments in The Office TV show - The good boss himself, Javier Bardem stars as the inheritor and owner of a company that makes scales. He seems like a good boss, with a clean operation, well treated employees, saying the right things, and a nice workplace, but things get complicated when it's announced that the company will receive an inspection by a government agency. When the boss fires an employee, the guy comes back, staging a 24 X 7 protest along with family members, signs and bullhorns. Several of his male staff are philanderers, as are some wives. The boss himself succumbs to the temptations of a young female employee, who sees a shortcut to promotions. “Effort, Equilibrium, Loyalty” is the motto of the company but a lot of what goes on is anything BUT that. You do hope that the scales work better than management.
I really enjoyed it. It's a welcome escape from summer movies, to something that's witty in an evil way. Bardem is great as the manipulative, philandering boss. I don't know any of the other Spanish actors but they all created a great bunch of dark comedy characters that worked well for me, in spite of my need to rely on the subtitles. It's enjoyably dark, full of sin and satire. Most of us, at some point, encountered bosses and workplaces like this, although probably not to this degree so we can relate.
I have a strong preference for subtitles when a movie isn't in English, don't like movies that are dubbed, so this one worked well.

Tremors is one of those movies I can drag out late and night and watch in order to turn my brain into jello before going to sleep. It's an all time favorite monster flick with an admirable "cast of characters", as well as the giant worm. I have not seen any of the sequels. Unfortunately Finn Carter (Rhonda LeBeck) went seriously off the rails, her career crashed and she was arrested a couple years ago for auto theft. I don't know whether she ended up in jail.

The fact that words don't synchronize with lips and voices don't seem like they fit the person is the most obvious problem, even more so if the vocal expressions are flat, something that's common. Then there's the sound production elements like how background environments and music have to be either redone or remixed. Those are basically NEVER right. After a few minutes, all I can pay attention to is how the sound doesn't work. It's something I'm sensitive to. Oddly enough, having the movie redubbed into English becomes a distraction to me.
I'm about 10 to 1 in favor of subtitles.

I don’t know. I agree with the logic, but I’ve always felt (as someone who nearly always has subtitles on) that this makes you pay less attention to the film/show, as your eyes are naturally at the bottom of the screen while the film/show is being processed by your peripheral vision. I think it’s odd.
I watch a lot of Iranian cinema and get exhausted by subtitles distracting me. I’d much rather have it dubbed, but no one dubs anything anymore, because there’s no demand.
But then again, I read some research recently that suggested Gen Z always keep subtitles on, so I guess that’s the fashion right now.

You didn’t ask me, but I’ll give my opinion (which I’ve given before).
Nothing would make me watch a dubbed movie because to me it’s then immediately fake. I see from the Top Gun dvd movie that it’s dubbed in Spanish & Chinese. So, somehow, Tom Cruise is now Chinese or Spanish, both of which suspend belief.
The beauty of watching Bergman movies is hearing the Swedish language. It would make no sense if they all had British accents.
I watched a lovely documentary about nomadic peoples who live in yurts in Mongolia. So interesting. Next time I come to watch it it’s been dubbed with American accents. So now Americans are living in yurts with their camels.

I've also heard that some people with minimal hearing problems and/or noisy environments can benefit from subtitles that can fill in gaps that they miss. I'm sure dubbing could be good, but it would be an expensive process since it require significant sound production work. The one's I've seen/heard seem to take the cheap version of dubbing where someone with a wrong accent and vocal sonority pretty much reads the words.

I agree that the allure of this kind of stuff stems from “I’d never do this in a million years”. I don’t particularly fear heights and I’m very flexible (there’s a bit in the film when one character tells another, “It’s just like pole dancing”, which I do), but I do fear risk-taking, in a way. I’d never do anything remotely dangerous on purpose, I think (at least physically dangerous in that immediate sense).

Enfin.
Need to think about this one, but I respect the concept. Few people have guts like Cronenberg, even if he doesn’t have as much as he used to.
Also why on Earth would you call two of your own films the same thing unless you had Alzheimer’s? My father would say “I like the sound of it”, but surely that’s a ridiculous reason. And how bloody confusing if one were to Google “Cronenberg - Crimes of the Future”. One’s only hope would be the wonders of SEO.
I’ve also been acutely aware of Stewart’s mannerisms/characteristic grimaces ever since she played Princess Diana. See it everywhere now, twitching mouth and all. Bizarre.

This one is insane, characterized as a pie fight in a slaughterhouse, the 1985 horror movie Re-Animator. Loosely adapted from H P Lovecraft, but even Lovecraft couldn't have gone this far. It's only for the non-squeamish, but it really is a crazy, crazy movie. Not only that, but it's also quite funny in a lunatic sort of way since it's all so campy and crazy. Body parts, exploding eyeballs, spurting blood, scalp peeling, bone saws and, the worst of all offenses, nudity, are all part of the tenuous story about a doctor/medical school professor who over reaches when he tries to save a life. Even the trailer is a challenge to the squeamish. It really is a dose. It shows up in festivals now and again, but I found it buried in my DVD pile.

Picturehouse in the shot. Delightful.
This was actually very sexy, but it’s a rare example where I tend to agree with so-called progressive critics: it’s boring that everyone in gay romance films inevitably breaks up. It’s equally boring in straight romance films, too, don’t get me wrong: but it seems it would make sense to use the oh-all-gay-films-victimise-gay-people thing to one’s advantage to come up with an ending that would be at least a bit more original than people who broke up for no particular reason at all as they felt “time has passed” and “cheating is bad”. Pathetic meaningless plotting.

Tonight, it was See How They Run. Done in the style of Agatha Christie, with a mostly British cast, except Adrien Brody and Sam Rockwell. An American director is directing a British play by Agatha Christie (The Mousetrap) into a movie and, in the style of these sort of stories, one of the cast is murdered. The crime is investigated by a British detective with an alcohol problem. The production is halted and, of course, everybody is a suspect. Questions and accusations fly and everybody is a suspect as the not-too-competant detective (Sam Rockwell) tries to puzzle out the crime, with the help of his sober but wet-behind-the-ears assistant (Saoirse Ronan).
I’ve always had a taste for occasional doses of old school English detective stories. This one is enjoyable, keeps it light and comes to its inevitable conclusion, which, or course, I will NOT reveal. Accents might be a challenge for American viewers, but I liked it since I’ve long enjoyed occasional doses of these kind of movies. You won’t find any Oscar performances here, but nobody’s probably expecting that, so just sit back and watch the “mystery”unfold.

I never enjoyed The Stepford Wives, and generally in my experience all these domestic dystopia films tend to turn out remarkably awful, but it should be a fun Friday flick. It’s opening night in London, and I’m finally in a packed cinema where it’s usually empty.
Not interested in all the off-screen drama at all.
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4a/14/c6/4a14c69d36f66043b894bd86baae6c91.jpg
As awful as advertised. Good to have one’s expectations met. Harry’s accent indeed profoundly idiotic. Never liked Booksmart, either, though I guess I can see why people did, but more broadly, I just don’t see why so-called feminist directors are so obsessed with the oppression of women (ironic, I know).
If you’re so passionate about women being independent creatures and all that, shouldn’t they be able to function in a plot that doesn’t revolve around them asserting their rights/looking for independence/whatever? Always served as my own private Bechdel test for the so-called feminist films, that: are women doing or interested in anything except escaping their supposed oppression?
Anyway, the thing is terrible.
End.

I didn’t mind the whole foetus thing (could have been more graphic/violent though, I kind of expected that, and of course it’s rather controversial now to show someone somewhat regretting an abortion, which was an interesting artistic choice), but this was… not good.

One of my favorite historical dramas. A bit like me, dark and depressing. Lol

I have never read his works but I highly enjoy films based of him and other classic writers from that time period.

I do like the book as well. It’s so shockingly dark for its time (he got a lot of flack for that). I’m opposite, I have read all Hardy works but tend to dislike the film versions.

I was going to call it excellent, but then the last ten minutes happened. It’s a bit of an overload with too much going on, but I still think it’s mostly very good and has clearly taken notes from all the failures of the last twenty years.
I still think horror as a genre is evolving like perhaps little else. It’s a pretty accomplished piece, though I do see how such things both stigmatise mental health issues and give therapists a bad rap. I suppose I’m one of those weird ****ed-up people who don’t believe in “concern”. I can understand people messing with others’ plans and business as a plot device, although even that is quite lazy, but generally I feel like the human brain will soon evolve to not share one’s struggles with anyone, for any reason, because the response is never helpful and usually a nuisance.
It does have more jump scares than a lot of the things I’ve seen recently.

You didn’t like the original Far From the Madding Crowd? One of my fave movies.
Polanski’s Tess was also good.

Actually, you got me there - yes, I did like Tess. I can’t really say about Far From the Madding Crowd - it’s a timeless classic and I see the skill, but I can’t say I personally liked it that much. Jude the Obscure is a novel I love and one I think was way, way ahead of its time, but it never seemed very adaptation-friendly to me. I think it’s genuinely dark, a Dostoyevsky-level horror-psychodrama, incest, killer/suicidal children and all (that’s honestly my assessment), and it never feels like anyone wants to go in that direction with Hardy.

I’ve read Jude. Fairly sure I haven’t seen the movie for some reason.
I’m a huge Julie Christie & Terence Stamp fan & they made the movie for me. Hated the remake.

I assumed you would have read it, yes! I was just trying to illustrate that to me it’s because it’s so dark that it’s hard to adapt. But then with all novels we like, we have a version in our mind which is hard for any adaptation to match, I think.

There was a Jude mini-series in 1971 starring Robert Powell. I’ve read it was very acclaimed.

The Virgin Suicides. A so called rewatch. i have the intro on pause now. I hope to see one more movie later tonight.
Lost in Translation is 20 years in 2023.

I’m sure it would seem very clunky by our standards today. Is Robert Powell still alive? Must check.
Nothing would make me go to a Bocelli concert, but enjoy!

Not hopeful that I’ll enjoy this, but having worked in fashion, it’ll at least be marginally interesting.
Isabelle makes everything worth it, but I really dislike stuff like that, especially the philosophy behind it. It’s like the worst type of romantic comedy.

started "The Squeeze" (1977) because I'm a big fan of Stacy Keach, and just realized it was directed by someone who made one of my favorite documentaries - Michael Apted (Seven-Up series), but the English accent Keach is doing.... I wish they just let him play an American who just moved to England for any number of reasons.
The description of the movie is so unappealing, so I might not get past the 30 minute mark, but I have to try. This drought is killing me. I'm so hungry and thirsty for a good movie.

You know Apted died last year? So will there be 70 UP? The only person who could do it is a certain longtime producer of the show, but I don’t think anyone has committed so far though everyone agrees that this woman would be the most suitable.
Personally I would love 70 UP & then end it. All of them, cast & crew alike, are getting old & tired of the show.
