View Full Version : Movie You're Watching Tonight
Threads is damn great Cricket. An extremely dark film, but the most realistic I've ever seen that tackled what an actual apocalypse would be like. Hope you like it.

I love Wall-E. It should have been the #1 movie in the Animation Countdown.
Miss Vicky
02-25-15, 08:24 PM
Up should've been #1. It got the most votes, but no... stupid Toy Story had to take it. Three ****ing points, but I'm not bitter about that or anything.
Anyway, FM, I expect you'll love it.
I'll be watching Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, which will complete my viewing for the 6th HOF.
Friendly Mushroom!

I almost put Up higher on my list but decided against it at last minute. If I did it would have got those three points.
Spirited Away is my pick for the 1.

I almost put Up a little higher as well... Still mad I didn't even include Wall-E on my list, because tha rewatch surely was a great one for me. Still glad Toy Story took home that number one spot though! :D

You guys choose... Should I watch "The Red Shoes" or "The Wedding" (Altman)... I have quite a few DVDs and VHS from the library and thrift stores that I haven't saw either. Not real sure what to watch. I was considering "Wolf of Wall Street" though I've cooled off of Scorsese's latest stuff, or the film "Whiplash" only because I play drums. "Cookie's Fortune" is another film I have laying around that I've never watched.
How particular are you guys in picking a movie? Thanks to watching more film, this board, becoming more involved at the library, since I only watch one film a day, I prefer to watch something great. Hell, sometimes after a few bad errors of judgement, I'll watch something I already love for the soul :)

The Red Shoes
I don't like know TOO much about what I'm going to watch to keep a clear and open mind, but is the film mainly about dancing and theater? I think it's why I've put it on hold for a while. I read a review (on accident) about an amazing 12 minute ballet scene, which wouldn't interest me.

The Red Shoes.
The ballet scene is kinda boring as it goes on too long (for me, obviously) but no, it's not all dancing. There's not a great deal of it in the overall scheme of things, actually.
The Red Shoes is one of the most-beautiful-looking color films ever made, says plenty about the intersection of love and art and no, the ballet could go on longer since it's a masterpiece of cinematic surrealism.

- About to watch one of my all-time favorite again !
matt72582
03-06-15, 10:00 PM
Network - 10/10 - This was my favorite movie when I was about 19 or so.. Still love it. It's an eye-opener, and I hoped at that age even that people would catch on. That with this new internet, maybe enough people could communicate and somehow life or at least art would improve.
I DVR'd it for my cousin, as we talk about influence, trends, etc.., so I thought he'd enjoy it. I tried to get him to watch "Birdman of Alcatraz" - as soon as he heard Alcatraz, he was saying how prison movies are great, etc., and as this was starting he asked and noticed it was in black and white. This seems to be a virus among people my age, younger, and older. And I can never get an answer. "Because it's old" someone else I know. But never an answer.
As we start the film, within minutes, he's on his phone, while criticizing those who are on their phones. After I see how much he misses because his attention wavers, I tell him it's probably best to watch it alone.
And the movie is 39 years old... I wonder how and if they could do the movie today. This movie is not only timeless, it's more relevant today. What a great screenplay.
The sad thing is Sidney Lumet himself said how he changed a different movie's ending because of a test audience; 50 random people who didn't like an ending because it affected their sensibilities. Even those who "know" (Lumet) continue to play the game. I don't wanna tell too much of the film, but what is the purpose of life if there is no purpose; if money is a means and an end.
My cousin did yell out, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore" but the minute he gets a call to go and get drunk (50 miles away), his fatigue went away. I guess it's easy to say what you think, but I guess it's how one acts..
I don't wanna be self-serving, but if someone makes an "Appreciation" thread, I'd appreciate it, and like to talk further about this film, and how it pertains to modern (and somewhat past) society.

After I gave Inherent Vice a second watch I suddenly felt like diving into PTA's filmography once again... Since I started out with his latest I might as well go backwards through it, so tonight it will be this one...

^ My favourite Kiarostami from what I've seen. The Moment of Innocence is so much better, tho.
A Moment of Innocence is great, but Close-Up is on a completely different level. AMoI is a more political work, as is the case with Makhmalbaf, when Kiarostami makes a political film, it's tends to be more sociopolitical in nature. But as interesting and good AMoI is, Close-Up is far subtler, complex, and ontological. It's the basis for Kiarostami's 1990s art, which was the art of the decade. A Moment of Innocence is just imitation by comparison

I love movies and I love quiz shows, this looks great. I haven't watched a film in a while, and need something to get me back in the mood. Hopefully this does that.
