It's just really strange to see Minio and mark getting along over a movie, it's surreal...
It's not the first time, but this is certainly my highest-rated film he's shown such enthusiasm for. He's just got to watch more of my Top 170+. Or just more films (me too). :)

My favorite scene from Midnight Cowboy:
http://i776.photobucket.com/albums/yy46/gmw661uploadme/Smoking/50c-MidnightCowboy1969720pBlurayx264anoXmous_zpsbe36b472.gif
There's so many, but I really love the scene directly after where Ratso imagines himself King Pimp of Florida, at least for a little while.
Ratso is still my favorite character in cinema history.
He's damn close to mine too, but Elmer Gantry might top him by a hair.

I have. It's just a really lame collection of short gross-out vignettes that feature a lot of big stars, while meanwhile there is also some sort of weird "main story" goin on.
It's not the worst thing ever made, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone, unless you want to watch some really stupid stuff (which was basically why I saw it).

Liked the original but didn't love it, curious to see if this is actually a bad film or is judged as such because it's a remake.
The Coens' worst film by far, but not a truly bad film at all. It has some legitimately funny bits and I truly like Tom Hanks' performance.

Yeh I pretty much agree. My main complaint is with the characters, truly and irritating bunch. In the original they had a bumbling idiots/this is going to fail feel, but still felt like real characters, here they're completely overblown and annoying, it's an interesting experiment to take all different type of extremes and change the setting, but I don't think it works without the British charm.
On the plus side I loved Tom Hanks, I thought he was great and his mannerisms and facial expressions kind of reminded me of Peter Sellers.
And of course Roger Deakins cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully shot like the rest of his work.

Thought it was pretty good but no where near as good as I hoped it to be. Goes downhill after Gandolfini's character is killed, and I think it goes to extreme and pessimistic, like its parodying the pessimistic, cynical nature of noirs. Beauitfully photographed though, as usual.

Goodbye South, Goodbye is, expectedly, great! About what time feels like while it passes, and it has one of my favorite openings of a Hou film (the music is very unexpected, but it works intuitively and makes more sense the more you think about it). It also has a bit in common with Kiarostami films in the way that it observes the function and culture of vehicles, and the car is possibly the most important component in the creation of and implementation of his mise en scene.

Definitely the best war film I've seen so far. I couldn't stop thinking about it when it was over and its very rare that a war film has that type of effect on me.
There are some other good war movies like The Battle of Algiers (1966), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Ascent (1977), Come and See (1985) and Rome, Open City (1945). But it is up there as a top tier war movie. My personal favorite is Battle of Algier :)

I've only seen volume 1 myself, I didn't like it so I'm not rushing to watch the second part. Even though you might enjoy it for being 'kinky', I think the sexual parts are more off putting than erotic, and I didn't really get what the film was going for. Shia LaBeouf being one of the worst, most irritating actors ever also made the movie less enjoyable.

Your mum wants to watch it? Now that is weird, and will surely be awkward :p We finished the first volume and I didn't find it awkward to watch it with mum. I thought it's gonna have much more porn and von Trier will have his head up his ass. Like, you know, "I'll just record porno montage, because I can, because I'm pantsy artsy filmmaker, suckers!". That's not the case. Well, not with the first part, at least, but I don't think it's gonna change in the second one. I didn't find any of the scenes off putting so far neither, but yeah, King of Kinkiness title prevails, but seriously, what was off putting in Volume One (don't write about the second one so far because I haven't seen it yet)? The movie felt like black comedy at times, but I didn't laugh. I don't think the movie failed at anything. In fact, I think that it handled the topic quite well and can't wait to watch Volume Two. I'm sure that the topic of nymphomaniac is not the only thing von Trier wanted to do with his movie, but I really have to gather my thoughts about it and watch the rest of it, because as of now the film ranges from a decent piece of work to masterpiece.

I consider Nymphomaniac a near masterpiece. Volume Two is a 4_5 for me. I much prefer it to Volume One.

Well I don't really see the point of the film. She's a nymphomaniac. I don't care about her or understand why he's trying to compare it with fishing, which is silly. The whole thing just seems a pointless exercise, I hardly saw it as a compelling character study. And Shia LaBeouf is annoying, as I said.
I feel that Lars Von Trier is quite overrated, especially when it comes to his reception here in Denmark.
For me Breaking the Waves is his magnus opus and you got to love his reference to Ordet :)
I did also love Antichrist, but that was more as a Horror buff. I actually think that is one of the more well made horrors of the zero's. In general when it comes to newer movies within that genre, it's usually filled with cliche's and jumpscares.
I havent seen The Idiots for many years, so i surpose i should give that a rewatch at some point.
The Kingdom is more of a TV-series and even though it ran out of money, i think it's very recommendable, but i dont know if its too danish. At least its something i grew up with and have rewatched several times :)
Melancholia is pretty much in the bottom end and i think he described as a whipped cream cake (im not sure if its the right translation and its meant in a derogatory way).

Watching the film I thought Von Trier was just trying way to hard to be cool, the chapters, the text on screen when she was having sex, the linking to fishing, the music (like Rammstein at the beginning) and some other things. I dunno, I thought I would like it, it irritated me so much. It's strange because Antichrist, Dogville and a couple of others look like films I'd also be interested in, I'll have to try them sometime.
I am very mixed on Nymphomaniac. I think the best thing about it is the ending, which is very weird.

Rammstein has to be the most ironic and hilarious thing. Not only his music didn't fit the first scene, but also is pretty mainstream. I think that Lars did it to encourage general audience not to leave the theatre "yet" and then started his game. The film might be an experiment, many people here in Poland went to the theatre, because they wanted just plain porn jack off stuff and some of them weren't aware of what the movie is. Gotta remember Trier is provocative director.
Four hours of whatever. A litmus test of something, but all I know was that it didn't hold any deep or shallow meaning for me. Normally I get what von Trier's trying to do, and I can go along with it and derive some intellectual or cinematic charge from it. Daniel's mentioning of fish makes me think we're watching a caught fish flopping around in a boat or on a pier for four hours. At least I think that makes as much sense as anything.

I actually saw both volumes at the theater. The second volume is much darker than the first one and probably has more gravitas and ideas in it, but the first volume was a much nicer theater experience, because it had all those playful visual moments. There were lots of walkouts, though.
Nymphomaniac as a whole is not at all in the "masterpiece area", but in my opinion, it's definitely interesting enough to spend 4 hours on at least once.
And yeah, Swan is right. The ending is a classic Von Tier shocker.

My mother wants to see it. We will probably watch only Volume One, because 4h is too much for her.
I didn't know kinkiness was genetic :)
That sounds even worse than when I got trapped watching Belle De Jour with my mom, Bunuel was a radical for his time, but Von Trier can make Bunuels film look like a Sesame Street production. But then again even Sesame Street admiration of Katy Perrys cleavage raised controversy amongst the breastfeeding stay at home mom population.
havent seen Nymphomaniac yet :(

That if you don't understand or feel something doesn't mean it doesn't make sense or isn't deep. I hate Fellini, but I don't deny his films might have a meaning, sense and transcendental power I'm just unable to comprehend (maybe I would if not for them being so annoying I can't focus on anything else). The thing is when I can't get into a movie I usually think of it as my fault, not director's fault. I admit I put directors on pedestal, but that's the way I see it.
I'm also interested in your views on entertaining cinema. Doesn't it bother you it's not deep (some are, but focus on these you like, but consider shallow stuff to chill out to). I guess you just take it as "the movie was made for entertainment, therefore I don't demand any deep meaning from it and just sit and enjoy it". Yet you can't say the same about art cinema. Amirite?

Starting my watch of War and Peace.
All I can say right now is that apparently you don't understand me or "entertaining" movies either since you/ve categorized my thoughts about them and "deep" movies falsely. :)
Finished up the movie club for tonight and contemplating putting these two movies on, which are some of my favorites of all-time:

Charulata was one of the biggest cinematic experiences i had last year. It is a really well-told melodrama, so im looking forward to rewatching it. I really hope that people will consider it for the 60's list. I know its going to be way up high on the list for me.

It's certainly both of those things (and the only of his films that's mostly heterosexual), though some might not care for the kinkiness of it because, to paraphrase Guaporense (speaking about Uncle Boonmee), Hitchcock had his blondes, so why are all of these people ugly!?!?!

I don't get this line. Specifically the Hitchcock part and how it relates to ugly people. Guap pointed out Hitchcock was a director who loved his blondes that he finds attractive females and is angry about the fact that Weerasethakul does not put attractive women to his movies and therefore making a false statement that all Thai people are ugly.
