Started watching Forced Entry, but found out it's just a sadistic porn lasting 2 hours. I couldn't last that long, so I turned it off after few minutes and doubt I will ever watch it in its entirety. God, reading the sentences above seem like they have ambiguous meaning. I just wasn't in a mood for brutal porn, not that I couldn't last, like last, like... whatever.

Interestingly, in terms of films the ones considered to be "intellectual" are usually very simple poetic films that are very slow paced (such as Days of Heaven). Modern action movies such as the Bourne films, are very fast paced and it's even hard to follow the film's action scenes without pausing'en, the quantity of information they deliver per second is much higher than in art films.
While so called intelligence tests measure your capacity for reasoning given a restricted time period. By that measure, action films are smart and art films are dumb.
About Days of Heaven, it's like other Malick's films: slow, poetic, beautiful and they all leave me cold, that's mainly because Malick's films keep their emotional distance from the characters.

I don't agree.
Intellectual films offer certain insights about a subject in interesting and innovative ways and make you think about its statements, issues and ideas long after the film is over.
The pace and the true intellectual depth of a film have absolutely NOTHING to do with eachother, in my opinion.
Someone who can solve 100 simple calculations in 1 minute is not smarter than someone who can solve a difficult mathematical issue in 10 years.

I'm watching this because of Holden's comedy recommendations in the '70s list topic. This film particularly drew my attention. I think I'll enjoy this one.

I know that this is going to be a very challenging film, but I think its about time to view my final Tarkovsky film. On a side note to anybody whose seen the film, which version is preferred:The 3-hour or 3 1/2 hour version?

L'atalante (1934) by Jean Vigo
I have only seen Ŕ propos de Nice from 1930 by Jean Vigo, which was a great city-life documentary about nice. Im looking forward to seeing L'atalante which is way up high on the Sight and Sound top 250 from 2012.

Vivre Sa Vie (1962) by Jean-Luc Godard
Another sixties Godard with his wife Anna Karina. Godard was on fire in the sixties and im looking forward to seeing another gem by this great director.

I just wondered because Days of Heaven has my favorite cinematography and musical score of all time. Also the sound in the mill scene at the beginning is loud and really puts you there. I find it a very immersive film experience.

We have finished watching the Godard and the Tarkovsky movies, but we have some more movies planned for this evening.
I have to say that it is intoxicating to watch Godard's sixties movies. They are so vibrant and fresh and the way he toys with the film medium makes me all giggly inside. I think that everybody should at least watch one or two of his movies from that period. If they don't like the subject matter people should at least be appreciative of his style or his impact on the story of film.
Solaris was an extraordinary experience and what i would say in Danish is that he has the highest "bundniveau" of any director in the history of film. Basically that he is the most consistent director ever, even his worst movie is ridiculously good. Anyway at least i can say that im a Godard and Tarkovsky fanboy :D

This is going to be my 1st film from Godard(Late I know). I'm not quite sure what to expect, but I've heard that his films are very pretentious.

Bergman didn't like Orson Welles as well and his opinions on various filmmakers are really funny to read. But it was like, his opinion, man. I like Godard. :D
And Orson Welles only liked filmmakers whom he thought treated their actors with the utmost respect. Filmmakers who are also such strong auteurs and personalities are hard to take at their word. I think that generally our tastes are less strict than these types of filmmakers because they have a very specific way that they've learned to see the medium. I adore Tarkovsky but have far less appreciation for Bergman than he does; I love Welles and Antonioni. Godard is a completely different type of filmmaker than Bergman, we can appreciate both, just Gordard, or neither ;)

I dont think i have ever watched so many good movies in a row, but it might go out the window this week or next week. Im attending the Copenhagen Architecture and Film Festival this week and CPH : PIX next week. So im going to watch and discover a lot of new stuff which can be fun as well.
My plan is to see stuff like Ten Skies by James Benning, The Red Desert by Antonioni, Taste of Cherry by Kiarostami. The new Tsai Ming-Liang, Koreeda, Porumboiu, Caballero, Miyazaki and Lav Diaz. I love attending film festivals :D

Well you must recognize that their production company, who had Pulp Fiction as their first release, was named after Band of Outsiders...
Also some critics actually compare Godard and Tarantino due to their love for B-movies, which they reuse / recycle and make into a new kind of movie.
But yeah its not like im comparing Band of Outsiders with Pulp Fiction like Kill Bill is a remake of Lady Snowblood.
At least you can say that Tarantino acknowledges the work of Jean-Luc Godard ;)
The next 3 on my 70's watchlist, not sure in what order though.

'While I say I've outgrown [French New Wave filmmaker Jean-Luc] Godard, I haven't outgrown Pauline Kael's reviews of Godard. The most influential piece of film criticism which applied to my aesthetic, which applied to me—I was very young—I remember reading it at Philippe’s, that French sandwich place … I’m reading her review of Band of Outsiders, also known as Bande ŕ part, which I named my own company after—she’s reviewing Godard’s movie and she says, ‘It’s as if a couple of movie-crazy young Frenchmen were in a coffee house and they’ve taken a banal American crime novel and they’re making a movie out of it based not on the novel but on the poetry that they read between the lines.’ And when I read that I said, ‘That’s my aesthetic! That’s what I want to do! That’s what I want to achieve!’

Yeah, Tarantino clearly "outgrew" Godard's early 60s films, just like Godard outgrew his 60s films

He never mentioned Godard's early 60s films anywhere. What makes you so sure he was referring to that particular period?
bluedeed
03-25-14, 01:26 PM
Because Godard's films beyond the 60s haven't gotten much if any release in the US, many are without US DVD releases, still so he would most likely not have access to them until fairly recently, and also because what he normally describes as his view of Godard is typical of that period, in line with the overall French New Wave rather than his very different films (and videos) of the 70s onward.
