Its an informative movie about the influence of digital film making with a lot of interviews. If you are interested in cinematography and the development of film its a pretty good watch. As a documentary there is nothing groundbreaking as such neither in the narrative nor the film language. I would give it 3.

Which documentaries about films have you seen?

Which documentaries about films have you seen?
Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through the American Movies (1995) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112120/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) and Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102015/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)

The first one is made by Scorsese and it's basically about cinema till the 60s although he mentions some later films as well and it is also only American films,he particularly talks about Western,Musical and Gangster genre.Scorsese expresses his personal opinion a lot but the documentary is extremely educational, lots of scenes from the films, lots of talk, lots of film history. It's about 4 hours long and it's split in 3 parts but I was so hooked that I watched it all instantly.Really broadened my mind even if I'm not a fan of old cinema.I like that he not only talks but also manages to prove his opinions and shows lots of scenes from various films.

The second one is about struggles while filming Apocalypse Now.Guess if you enjoy the film, you will enjoy the documentary. :)

Hi everybody,

Is there someone that have seen "Side Effects (Soderbergh's movie with Jude Law)? Any advice about the movie? Thanks.

CelluloidChild
05-09-13, 12:34 PM
Yes, I've seen it.

In general, it's an alright movie and Soderbergh moves it along well. Cast is good. Catherine Zeta-Jones in an atypical role. Roony Mara is very good.

I found the plot became increasingly tenuous and less believable as the movie went on, however.

I'd give it no more than 6/10, but I think professional critics generally rated it much higher. I guess I was disappointed.

Yesterday I saw Sides effects. I think I agree with your opinion. The movie is a good thriller where the plot is never predictible with many twist, but (you're right) it's not believeble. The movie treats in a quite good way the inconsistencies of the pharmaceutical industry, but it backdrop to the thriller. About these theme, I prefer movie like Prozac Nation.

I'm watching two very acclaimed modern movies (by the public or the critics) tonight.

Léon: The Professional (1994) Extended Version

http://c2.quickcachr.fotos.sapo.pt/i/b4b047359/6799906_CcZrr.jpeg

It's extremely popular, so I'm very curious where the fuss is all about.

Children of Men (2006)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UumzV9UWs_g/Tc1tsWfpM4I/AAAAAAAAABA/pKjrcU0-9Sw/s1600/Children+of+Men+poster.jpg

Yes, you're right. There are twists that lead us in an unexpected direction. But ultimately those twists become too many and strangle the movie itself.

In terms of a movie about Big Pharma, I kind of liked Love and Other Drugs.

I'm watching this for the MoFo Hall of Fame, as it is Guaporense's nomination. This will be my 7th Miyazaki film. Some claim that this is the best animation movie ever and there are others who even call it the best movie all time out of every genre. I'm very curious...

A little weird, yes, but the movie isn't about John Malkovich and there's very little reference to his movies in the script so it shouldn't really affect your viewing experience.

Both really good movies. Very different, though. Depends on your mood. One's more of a fast-moving thriller with a classic car chase. The other is a very (emotionally) moving often hard to handle drama.

http://www.jackasscritics.com/images/movies/ladykillers_02.jpg

I didn't see the original version yet, but I can't wait to finish the Coen Brothers' filmography, so I'm making an exception on my rule to never watch remakes before the original film. I guess it will differ a lot from the original one anyway, as the Coen Brothers always have very specific ideas.
This is widely seen as the Coen Brothers' worst film, so I'm curious if I'll share this opinion. After this watch, I will be able to say that I've seen all the released feature films that are made by the Coen Brothers (directed and written). I haven't disliked one yet, so I hope this one doesn't screw up their wonderful streak!

I'm watching two HUGE classics tonight (or tonight and tomorrow night if there isn't enough time):

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

I've been meaning to watch this one already for a pretty long time. It was featured in the latest Mad Men episode, so I figured tonight was the perfect night for it!

McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)

Robert Altman is becoming one of my favorite directors. The Player was absolutely brilliant. You can expect a very positive review about it in the near future. Hopefully Altman continues his streak with this widely acclaimed western film.

Taxi Driver is an excellent film. The finale has some of the best special effects I've ever seen. Tonight, I'm planning to watch the original Superman. I've never seen any of the Superman movies, and I'm going to watch all of them before Man of Steel comes out. Yes, that includes the one where he quests for peace; any advice to avoid that film will be ignored.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller is absolutely brilliant, and I'm 99% sure that you'll love it. I've watched it a couple of times recently as it was on Sky Movies in the UK and it's got potential to be one of my all time favourites. The only other Altman film I've seen is Short Cuts, which was really good, gonna try and watch more, all the ones you've seen are on my watchlist :)

I'm watching two more recent films of two great directors (who are underexplored by me) tonight:

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/89/Charliewilsonwarposter.jpg/220px-Charliewilsonwarposter.jpg

Mike Nichols is a great director. I already saw 3 of his movies. The Graduate was wonderful, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is also great and I really liked Closer too. This seems to be a very interesting film, mixing politics with comedy and featuring a great cast with the likes of Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Side Effects (2013)

http://s20.postimg.org/k71g59pod/2_NGd_KBw_B.jpg

I've only seen two films of Soderbergh: Out of Sight and Ocean's Eleven. I liked them both, especially the first one.

I don't really have any expectations for MIB 3, as I thought the second one was really poor and it seems like they rushed it a little bit, but I've heared that La migliore offerta (or The Best Offer) is a pretty good drama, so I kind of have great expectations for it :)

I've only seen 2 Lynch films; I loved Blue Velvet and liked Wild at Heart. I really don't know what to expect with this one and am probably only watching it due to the praise it gets from other members here. I'm going to watch it now while I'm wide awake and the wife is at work, in order to give it my full attention.

Probably something from Charlie Chan series. Watched 7 over the weekend, will add a few more tonight!

This one movie, just went over my head! I was drunk a bit, had to google for the meaning of the movie.

Would be a shame to not give the last 2 movies a chance, altough I'm halfway through the sequel and.. meh :/

I have been too hard on Salo. At least ***** happens in Salo! Pun intended... this is just boring!

I still hate Salo, but I will give credit to good cinematography and scenery. This movie is way worse!

Yeah horror movies are generally hit or miss. What were the last two you saw??

There are so many horrible ones (that are really only good if you're watching them with friends, or you're just a big horror fan). I'm more into psyc thrillers or creepy suspense, but I like a good horror movie. Example, I love Friday the 13th even though it's not my usual type of movie. Movies like House of 1000 Corpses didn't do much for me and I'd never had watched it by myself. I like the SAW movies, but hate mindless gore. Can't explain it, just is.

The first was...

Ragini MMS.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1890513/

More than the movie it was the theater i guess. Sat in the corner, no one sitting around me, sitting just below the speakers. Not good. First hour or so, it was all sex and stuff. At that point of time, i was confident i was going to finish the movie without issues. The second hour, i was just wishing the movie was over. Did not sleep well for 4 days after that.

Then 1 week after that it was REC.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

This one scared the **** out of me probably because I was still having side effects of the first one.

After that watched only 2 horror movies. The Shining, not that scary and one other one, watched it with friends.
