See, I love Defiance. Its not dull at all to me.

My ‘same’ was more in relation to the fact I’d seen it before but it hadn’t registered as much. I watched it with my mum, who brings everything back to the Russia-Ukraine war nowadays, which is understandable but slightly exasperating to me, and we were talking about ‘war’ in the abstract throughout…. From that vantage point, I felt like something was missing in the way it was depicting war. I don’t know. It’s a very strange and personal experience nowadays as someone with relatives in Eastern Europe and both Russia and Ukraine, so I guess I just couldn’t fully detach myself. I certainly didn’t find it ‘dull’.

I spent most of that night reading about the Bielskis (the youngest brother is 97 years old! Incredible), and it all felt somewhat bigger and more expansive than what the film portrays. Liev Schreiber is a perfect fit for this film, but Craig (whom I adore) really isn’t, imo. So that’s kind of where I was coming from. Maybe I’ll rewatch it again. My mum spent the whole time saying at regular intervals, ‘How terrible! Why do people do such things?’, and it was all a bit much.

I really can only watch films alone, can’t I. I’m hopeless.

On the plus side, for once the Russians were played by native Russian speakers — thank you for that, Mr Zwick!

You should watch my nomination for the 34th HOF. Its a war film. It takes place during the separation of Yugoslavia.

What’s up with your neighbor?

AgrippinaX

What’s up with your neighbor?

I think I posted about this and you responded. What you said actually made me feel better. In a nutshell, she hurts her kid. He screams and cries all the time and I hear her shouting like the psychotic See-You-Next-Tuesday that she is. I reported her but so far of course nothing concrete has happened.

But yeah, I haven’t spoken to her in years and she doesn’t exist to me as a human being at this point. These people should be in jail and never let anywhere near a child. For various reasons I feel very strongly about kids.

I’m planning to move anyway. Not being sarcastic.

In relation to the movie, quite apart from the emotional distress this neighbour and her husband (who isn’t the boy’s father and who enables this) cause me, the noise is also just unbelievable.

Perhaps I’m going mad. We didn’t correspond per se (not privately), but I posted in ‘Miscellaneous’, I think, about how I can’t sleep because of their screaming, and you said nothing you would say would make me feel better. Which, I know exactly what you meant. I also mentioned in my post that my best friend doesn’t like kids and told me not to waste my time reporting the neighbour — which made me feel absolute rage towards my best friend, though she turned out to be absolutely correct (as always).

I tried finding this post/thread but it was a while back so I couldn’t immediately place it.

P.S. I’m sure plenty of people would tell me my neighbour isn’t ‘hurting’ her child because it’s mainly emotional abuse — to those people: do **** off.

An animated classic I've seen countless times, and one of my favorite novels to boot..

I remember going on a school field trip in 4th grade to see this in the theater when it opened in 1978.

I suspect our horrified teachers/chaperones had no inkling just how violent it would turn out to be 😆

Maybe after the kiddos are in bed, I can finally watch Odd Job (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078016/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_Odd%2520Job). I understand the content isn't too extreme. The reason I'd wait for the kiddos to be in bed is because then I can focus on the movie and not need worry about what they're doing else sleeping. It made sense to me, anyway. The movie isn't even 90 minutes, so I should be able to watch it before being too tired to register what happens.

I saw this film mentioned in another subforum and thought I'd check it out, as my library happened to have a copy. I am familiar with Spirited Away, but as I'm not a huge fan of anime I hadn't really bothered to dig any deeper into Miyazaki's filmography. This one looks interesting..

It's that time of the year to pull Twister (the 1996 version) off the shelf. Having had several way-too-close encounters with them, including being INSIDE one, revisiting the tornado world from my basement video system is the best way to rekindle the memory and recall why I don't like them now.

Right now I'm focusing on 1940, the good and the bad. So right now, it's the lowest-rated 1940 film on Letterboxd: Nazi propaganda film The Eternal Jew. God, it's so filled with twisted truths that it entirely distracts from any attempt at judging filmmaking quality. As a German-blood who was raised on Biblical holidays, I have a special hatred for Nazism to the point where I find movies focusing on the cruelty of Nazis difficult to watch. It's even difficult to watch them do these things as the antagonists, but as PROTAGONISTS it's almost impossible for me, like watching a movie about pre-civil war slavery. The Human Condition trilogy was hard enough for this. The only exception to this habit of mine is Moses adaptations for the nostalgia.

Gotta pull this one off the DVD shelf now and again.....greatest movie of its type ever, Casablanca (1942). It's so direct, urgent, compact and economical, not a wasted second. It's full of great snappy dialog, amazingly perfect monochrome cinematography and dramatic lighting. It has Bogie and Bergman in their prime, along with Sam (Dooley Wilson), Play it again, Sam, origin of the quote, creepy Peter Lorre and sinister Sidney Greenstreet, lots of soft focus, close-up shots, Claude Rains, lots of cigarette smoke, That Kiss, and That Song, As Time Goes By. Movies just rarely ever, get any better than this, even after all of these years. "I stick my neck out for nobody", "of all the gin joints, she comes to mine", "play it again Sam", "here's looking at you, kid", says Rick, the cynical idealist.

Good film, but nothing much. My mother who I watched it with said it’s so depressing only a woman could make it. Don’t agree with that, but a striking observation nonetheless.
To my mind, much of best and most harrowing WWII/Holocaust/war drama can be characterised as ‘know it’s hopeless, but do it anyway’.

Going to cry because of The Odd Job. I don't know if the movie is sad because I couldn't watch it. The DVD is unwatchable. It stuttered every second and I can't watch a movie like that. I'll have to try something else...

Further addendum; I found a way to watch Odd Job online, so I can do that. Hopefully I can get a refund on the DVD.

Addendum; I am a little over a third into The Odd Job (I decided to shower because I was getting headachey from laughing so hard). Yeah based on my parenthetical, it should be evident I'm enjoying it. Graham Chapman wrote a strong first act. Now to see if the remaining 50 minutes are awesome too.

Still loved it as much as the first time around.
Perplexingly, the ushers at my favourite cinema told us there are two post-credits scenes… Initially, I thought I left early and missed one during the premiere, which doesn’t sound like me. But no, I had seen the exact same film. As far as I understand, there is just the one; I stayed until the lights came on. On the other hand, it made me think about a definition of a scene when it comes to things like this. Odd.
There was also an actual fight — not a verbal altercation but a brief physical tussle — about 15 mins in over a young girl being on her phone, swearing, being all in each other’s faces, and all, which is not something I’d ever thought I’d see.

I know that I'm jumping into the lion's pit. Tonight's movie was Star Wars III, Revenge of the Sith, the third installment of the prequel series of movies that plot-wise, preceded the first Star Wars episode of 1977, which was actually the 4th episode of what was intended as a 9 movie series. I haven't seen it since it was new, but tonight, it seemed over long, less plot than the run time could support. The clearly animated visuals seemed cluttered....too much animation power in those computers, too much stuff on the screen. Characters didn't have the freshness and energy of the original trilogy. We DID get to see Darth Vader put on his full suit for the first time, but that was a long wait. Oh well, sometimes, movies don't age well.

That happens to me, too — I look through my very long list of what I’ve seen that doesn’t have posters, just titles, and have no idea what some of these were. This one is quite memorable, to be fair. It was far more action-heavy than I’d expect from an Iranian film — and I’ve always loved Iranian cinema and have form there, as it were.

I did my very first re-watch of this movie quite recently. Don’t think I had finished it before, but this time I thought it very good.

I definitely streamed it, but that doesn’t seem to be an option right now. Only dvds.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to find it for ages. I mostly enjoyed it, but probably wouldn’t rewatch, I don’t think. It’s the sort of film my mum loves (some of them I love too, but this one I was largely neutral on).

I hate such stuff, but the soundtrack is good. Dear mother wanted to watch this. I just cannot stomach anything made for women, it seems.

Thank you! It really did. Was a great evening after that one. That’s (partly) what movies are for. :)

Getting lost in a great film (or book) can definitely take the sting out of a bad day 🙂

I don't care for romantic dramas as a rule (Shadowlands is one of a handful of exceptions), but decided to give this one a chance, simply based on the setting. I go to the Outer Banks every year to fish and kayak, and have visited Rodanthe a number of times.

Bleah.....even by romantic drama standards, this was a steaming pile of schmaltzy excrement.

Now cleansing my palate with

A great (if slightly disturbing) film. Who'd have thought Dumbledore could be such a deliciously despicable villain...

I thought about starting Lonesome Dove tonight. I know it's a miniseries. Is it still okay for this thread?

I watched The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover a few years ago on Peacock. I think Amazon had a listing for the DVD for a fair price, although that was around the same time so I couldn't tell you its price now. Addendum; I looked on Amazon, and a Blu-ray is less than $25, in case that's an option.

It's an interesting movie with some grotesque imagery and some bizarre set pieces. It's a pretty good film overall. What'd you think of it?
