He got back to me almost immediately and asked if he could gift me a film from his catalog, (Other Cinema), I told him I owned all of them except one... The Net... so he mailed that one to me and when I got it it came with an Other Cinema sticker in the DVD box and his signature... way cool!

Woah that's really cool, he's a unique filmmaker, very inventive and very humorous. I've still got a few of his films to watch in the coming months. Hist style vaguely reminds me of another underground filmmaker I love, Ken Jacobs, though they stylistically differ but love collecting footage and assembling it into really compelling works of art and entertainment.

(I'm really looking forward to seeing Mock Up on Mu, as I'm a lapsed-Thelemite, so that will be a really fun watch :D )

It's been a while since I posted here, good to be back.


I just rewatched The Graduate for the 5th or 6th time and one of the aspect of the film that is always left unanswered for me is the strong motivation Mrs Robinson has to avoid Benjamin and Elaine to be together.


Why does she hate the idea so much?


I have an hypothesis, here it is: Mrs Robinson hates her life. She tells Benjamin at the beggining of the film that she is an alcoolic, we gradually learn that she had to stop studying art because she got pregnant of Elaine and that she doesn't love her husband. So the thing she has with Benjamin, even though it's purely sexual is something that belongs to her, something that she doesn't have to sacrifice for her husband or Elaine. So when the idea of Ben and Elaine dating came about, it was like her daughter took away from her again what she valued. I have a lot of sympathy for MRs Robinson, I almost hope there's a second version of The Graduate where Ben and Mrs Robinson end up together.

Tonight was Vampires VS The Bronx - The vampires, thinly disguised gentrifiers, are moving into the Bronx and bringing artisanal olive oil and sucking the blood of the locals, but the other New York won't go down easily. Tonight, it's The Stranger, a 1946 noir movie, not the Camus story. Directed by Orson Welles, starring Welles and Edward G Robinson, we have a runaway nazi (Welles), trying to lay low in a small town in Connecticut, including getting married to an unsuspecting woman (Loretta Young), while he's being pursued by a Nazi hunter (Robinson). Danger and murder happen. Dramatic monochrome cinematography with hard shadows and Welles' presence seem to lend authority to it as a drama.

I can't say that it's moving the earth, but it's pretty good and very noir.

The Invisible Man (watched last night)

I liked the dark/nefarious spin on this one. I was pretty excited when Universal decided to revisit the classics under the 'Dark Universe' banner (starting with The Mummy - Tom Cruise) and then disappointed when they trashed the idea due to The Mummy's box office performance.

Hope this one rekindles interest in continuing the project. Very good film - could have been great but falls apart a little towards the end.
