I haven’t heard of it either. Occasionally, I quite like to just stumble into things. It’s fine so far, though I’m questioning the logic behind the title which obviously reveals the basic premise.
I just read the wiki synopsis. Anna Kendricks is in a lot of crap movies, but it really seems halfway decent.

I do this too. Saves time. I’m not a fan of space movies, generally, but it is, indeed, halfway decent. No masterpiece, to be sure, but alright. I think the only two space films I’ve ever actually enjoyed were Moon and Interstellar.

Reading a wiki synopsis while watching a movie is always a bad sign for me. It generally means that the movie, at least in the beginning, is incomprehensible. Two recent movies that spring to mind with this problem are Syriana (3 x Wiki) & Bullhead (same). Oh, Happy End too, which I could not make heads or tails of at first. Luckily, I stuck with all 3 movies & they are all excellent.
I don’t mind space movies, per se. I thought The Martian, for one, was rather good.
Did we talk about Under the Skin ever? I love this weird sci-fi movie & I do not like sci-fi.

I agree. I rarely go as far as to actually read while I’m watching - it would have to be something truly awful for me to do that.
I don’t remember anything about Syriana, so understand the wiki there. Long overdue a second viewing. Both Happy End and Bullhead are great.
Haven’t talked about Under the Skin, no. I really like it and it’s one you can’t make heads or tails of either, in a sense, at first. Don’t think it’s really sci-fi, tbh, unless we mean the really soft kind. At some point I tried to find more such ‘soft’ films and came across Spring (2015). Actually, now I think about it, Upstream Colour (2013) is also a bit like it. Have you seen either of them? Sorry if I forget.
Johansson really did well when it comes to her alienation, made me think of Leeloo with how perfectly out of place she was. Such a beautiful film, too, colour-wise. I don’t mind soft sci-fi but I do have an aversion to films about vampiric females trapping men, so it was a welcome exception.
I don’t know what to make of Glazer overall - Sexy Beast is a classic I enjoy, but I thought Birth was very meh. And where has he been since Under the Skin, anyway?

Syriana is a terrific movie. Glad I persevered. Spring & Upstream Colour - never heard of either. I do recall bailing out of Birth.
I loved Sexy Beast having been one of the multitude of Brits in love with Spain. Terrific movie.
A sci-fi (soft?) movie I really enjoyed is Equals. I think you would like it.
About to toddle off for the evening. Encore, à vendredi. 😎 (BTW, it’s only very recently I realized France doesn’t capitalize the days of the week or months of the year. Same as Spanish. Years of French & I only now get this?)

Around minute 47 we hear, and I quote, ‘…hair all straight like “‘them ****ing Asian hoes’” (triple quote marks lest someone attributes said lovely statement to myself), after which this is called a ‘progressive film’… not my cup of tea, though very well shot indeed and visually gorgeous, also great soundtrack, but the irony of the above has kind of overshadowed the rest. Probably not meant as malicious but still comes off in a way that jars with the rest of the film.

As I watch everything with subs, it’s very amusing to see some of the translations. I picture someone with headphones typing furiously. Going by the sound of the word only & not paying any attention to meaning or context.
I once saw “I live in apartment 4G” translated as “I live in apartment 4 grand”.

Can’t surmise the raison d’être for this, given it’s word-to-word the concept of 47 Meters Down, apart from the snow, but whatever. Love Swedish films, so let’s see.
I suppose the predicament is rather far-fetched, as is common for the genre - even more far-fetched than in 47 Meters Down, but this is quite good. Always had an affinity for the Nordic POV, especially when it comes to film.
Plotting is a funny thing. It has to be seamless to work, like plastic surgery, otherwise, no matter how compelling it is, you find yourself thinking, Here we go, throwing yet more **** at the characters.

I am not excited about this, but the day had to come.
So annoying to hear a recycled soundtrack within 1 (!) minute of the film beginning! Dirge by Death in Vegas was already in Demonlover, which is not dissimilar.
I know this is not the right thread for this, but can someone explain what Marla coughs out around minute 83?
I just had the most insane case of Covid PTSD: I watched the character walk into the corner shop and thought, Where is her mask?!
Well, I’m amased, but I LOVED this. Who’d have thought.

I was looking forward to this film, partially because i like Chloe Sevigny. Her part in the film was short, around 15 minutes, in a single scene. She did a good job, but totally unnecessary by Gallo to go in that direction. It drags down the impression of the film.
Gallo re edited the film, after it was slaughtered in Cannes. Roger Ebert said it was the worst film in history of Cannes. He later reviewed the new version, and rated it three stars.
Gallo later blamed Ebert for the poor reception in Cannes. But he also realized it had some obvious flaws.
I would probably recommend seeing the re edited ( shorter) version. It is a decent road movie, and i think Gallo did a good job on the film.

I hate, hate found footage. Not the entire genre, of course, but everyone staring into the camera is incredibly distracting.
Anyway, within the first few minutes we see teens driving and bellowing out Jessie J.’s Price Tag. So, I remembered what you said, Takoma11, about teenage boys and Cardi B. Maybe you’re right. What a fun person you are, either way. I’m not being sarcastic in case it comes off that way, you really are a fun person.
Anyhow, this one isn’t working either. Can’t do found footage.
Take that back. This is pretty good now, after a slow start. But I still don’t like the nosebleeds, far too overdone.

Any film where the conceit is that the movie you are watching (or a significant chunk of it) was filmed by the people in the film or something to that effect. The Blair Witch Project is a good example.
Because it gives you a good excuse to film with a lower quality look and less composed, I feel like a lot of time they are not that visually engaging. And since the idea is that the people in the movie are filming the movie, it starts to stretch the imagination sometimes that someone would still be filming.
There are some decent films of this sort, like The Tunnel.

…And since the idea is that the people in the movie are filming the movie, it starts to stretch the imagination sometimes that someone would still be filming.
That is probably what’s at the heart of my ambivalence about the genre. It works when it’s established that it’s the characters’ job or second nature to film, so I didn’t need to always come back to, Have they got nothing better to do?/Like she’d be thinking of that now!
To this end, REC (the Spanish version) was quite convincing. But generally speaking, it’s a balancing act, much like epistolary novels. Some people say it’s up to you to suspend disbelief and that’s fair enough, but I’m quite draconian about it. It’s as if the carefully planted little found footage/epistolary sections work much better, as with the Gone Girl diary. Then, of course, there are brilliant meta-found-footage films, like Man Bites Dog, though I admit to being partial to most things meta.

Right. When the film does a good job of justifying the reason for filming (reporters, filmmakers) OR gives a compelling reason that someone would continue filming (ie "the light from the camera scares the monster away!") it can be okay. And talented directors can do some really interesting things with the forced perspective (REC is a great example of this).

I’m still getting used to that because it’s the actors themselves talking, so everyone has an accent. I’ve already watched Fauda like this a few months ago, it’s a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

dont know what the point of this is yet quirky gallows humor i sappose im getting a lynch vibe denis hopper is in it too dont know if its pulling it off.https://th.bing.com/th/id/OIP.gE0wYdcsv6-2t80qpAu3GQHaLH?pid=ImgDet&dpr=1.76
I really like this one! A sacrilege to compare to Lynch, in my view, but it sits in that niche of ‘80s teen films that were legitimately morbid, which I’d argue Twin Peaks isn’t.
What did you think in the end?

It has that morbid almost satire of drama.I just meant the quirkiness reminded me of lynch I thought it was entertaining but not that deep or dark.

The Eiger Sanction, is one of Clint's best movies, fabulous witty script, biautiful location's, outstanding acting, and a incredible John Williams score, it's in my top 50 best ever movies ever made, I wish Clint had made a series of movie's with the same character,he's a different Clint in this, very James Bond, theirs so many great scenes in the film,I personally liked the firs half the best, but overall, a perfect movie for a Sunday viewing.

Your assessment is spot-on as far as I’m concerned. Funny how some ‘80s films feel really simplistic now.
You ought to give Twin Peaks a try, it’s a masterpiece and far more quirky.

The Eiger Sanction is one of Clint's best movies, fabulous script, some of Clint's best one liners, gorgeous locations, outstanding supporting cast, and one of the best scores ever by Jony Williams. The first part of the movie is the best, very James Bond,I wish Clint had done a series of movie's like this with the Hemlock character.

This is actually a pretty tawdry theme for that era. I recall seeing it in the theater in 1950. As a 6 year old kid, I was shocked at the treachery, but wowed by Samson's comeback and superhuman strength. Victor Mature was at the peak of his career, even though he always said he couldn't act..;)

Off the top of my head:
Over the Edge (1983)
Class of 1984 (1982)
Bad Boys (1983)
Suburbia (1983)
Heathers (1988) - not on par with the above, but still. And River’s Edge itself.
1983 really seems to be the year for the sort of thing I’m talking about.
I was also thinking of Massacre at Central High, but that’s from 1976.
Also, perhaps, Near Dark (1987) qualifies, but I don’t like it much, and to me it’s not morbid.

Tonight's noir film - He Walked by Night - Set in Los Angeles, about 1946. A guy shoots a cop and the police are out to get him. It's a faux-documentary, lots of detectives with trench coats and hats (in LA) and lots of high-contrast imagery. It's early in the noir cycle.
What's somewhat notable is an early appearance by Jack Webb as a supporting character, not surprisingly, a cop. The word "dragnet" is used a lot, and the then young Jack Webb is not yet Joe Friday, but everything else fits as the prototype for the Dragnet TV show that had several runs. Citizen rights are violated, the entire area is locked down and everybody is a suspect.

Nobody (2021)
Enjoyable but strange film. These were my thoughts:
In a surprising foray against type, Bob Odenkirk plays a former CIA assassin (Hutch Mansell) who had been living the suburban life as a milquetoast until his inner assassin emerges when some thugs taunt a young woman on a bus. That unleashes a whole series of 007 type confrontations with a drug lord and his henchmen in which Hutch prevails, that impresses his kids and regains their respect.
It's a guess as to what they were trying to do here. At first it seemed to be a straight drama, but then morphed into a Kingsman or John Wick type of comedy overkill. Odenkirk's forte is droll comedy, so one kept expecting Hutch to lapse into understated gags. And it's not clear whether or not he may have.
The story is familiar and almost silly, but yet the set ups and acting were entertaining. The action and stunt scenes were as good as in much more expensive productions. There was a nice turn by the aged Christopher Lloyd as Hutch's father. Although 82 he still was believable in his action scenes. The popular Russian/Canadian actor Aleksei Serebryakov (Leviathan, Space Dogs) plays the chief bad guy. He managed to make a trite role seem plausible and even fresh.
Nothing new here, yet Odenkirk explores new territory, and action fans will enjoy the wuss to Wick adventure.
Doc's rating: 5/10

Glad you suggested that film! I re-watched it last night after many years, and was struck by several things. John Alton's (Father of the Bride, Elmer Gantry) cinematography was breathtaking. His noir set ups and lighting was almost as striking as those in The Third Man-- the film which surely influenced much of the L.A. storm drain settings in "Walked".
Another was the fine acting by Richard Basehart, an actor who never got superstardom, but who had a wide range, and was always excellent. For example he went on to play "the fool" in Fellini's La Strada (1954), and did an number of important eclectic roles up to 1979 in Being There (Peter Sellers).
I agree that it did have a quasi documentary feel. In tenor it was not much different from other noirs of the period, but the photography and acting floated it up among the better films noir of the era.
You may already have tried this, but to enhance my enjoyment of noir films I like to watch Eddie Muller's intros and outros from his excellent TCM shows, Noir Alley. Many of them are available on YouTube. Here is his intro for "Walked":

That's an interesting commentary. I wasn't aware of the movie and just randomly picked one from a cheap box set of "dark mystery" films. The look and feel is really archetypal. I don't know why they didn't say "noir", but that "ripped from the headlines" thing became was also used a lot to suggest that we are all just slipping downhill into a wallow of gangsters and cops.

Rewatch. Phantom of the Paradise, Body Double, Dressed to Kill, Carrie, Scar Face, Blow Out is my favorite films by Brian De Palma.
The Untouchables , Carlito’s Way, Mission Impossible, sisters and Obsession is good movies to. But the others are in a different level i feel.
Hi Mom (1970) with Robert De Niro is one i am gonna see soon. It is just a movie that has slipped by me for some reason. I have not seen any of his films after 2000. They don’t look very interesting. Just like Sick Boy stated in Trainspotting:
At one time, you've got it, and then you lose it, and it's gone forever. All walks of life: George Best, for example. Had it, lost it. Or David Bowie, or Lou Reed.
And of course they also mention The Untouchables ( Sean Connery, De Palma.)
It has been over 20 years since i saw The Untouchables, so maby i need to rewatch it, to rate it. And the mention in Trainspotting was coined at Connery, and not De Palma as director.

As long as you don't care too much if a movie doesn't make literal sense, Femme Fatale is terrific and the opening scene at the Cannes Film Festival is one of the best sequences he's ever directed.*
It's a last hurrah for when mainstream movies could be unapologetically horny, so of course it was punished with a lackluster critical and commercial reception.*

Thanks Rockatansky. It sounds promising. That has been one of the elements from his earlier movies that has made them work well. Although in Body Double, he has included a lot of humor. But still, a great film.
This also brings in the point i had intended to write, but i did not want my post to get to long. Scarface was one of my favorite films when i was around 20 years. I also saw The Untouchables, Dressed to Kill and Carlito’s way early on. But i never considered checking up his other films. Before i was recommended to see Body Double.
And that has been the same with his latest films, after 2000. I sometimes make up my mind on films, and don’t even read about them. That is a flaw i have been working on specifically last 10 years, when i started to broaden my horizon. A lot of films that has a slower build up, like Taxi Driver, Drive, Valhalla is typical movies i had negative ideas about. But now that is my absolute favorite genre.
Of course it is much easier to get access to information through blogs, imdb etc.
Around 2008, i started buying films online, i just used to sit on the different dvd sites that sold them, and scroll through the list, and look for interesting films.
A lot of talk today from me. I am staying at a family house for 10 days, and i have access to Netflix, HBO,Viaplay, Apple+, so i have enjoyed a little positive injection of film flow different from my own home situation.

Looooove Body Double, although part of me wishes we got the version where Annette Haven played the lead role as originally intended.*Not that Griffith isn't great in the role.*And I'll always love Scarface, screw the haters.*

Very briefly, what is this about?
Stroszek is one of my favorite films. It became a little bit more known after the death of Ian Curtis from the Joy Division. Reports say he watched this film before he hanged himself.
It's a film about the two contrasts of the European (German) and the American culture trough the life of a street musician Bruno Stroszek.
The story
Bruno is released from jail (heavy drinking) and fond a old acquaintance of his, a woman which he loved. That woman, Eva, is a prostitute in the hands of two pimps that are aggressive towards her, one minute they discard her like trash, beat her, the other minute they want her back. Bruno is the guy that always opens the door. Because of the brutality, Bruno, Eva and a neighbor friend decide to move to America, Wisconsin to seek a better life. The culture shock begins...
The movie is also kind of biographic, since what is shown in the film is Bruno S life. Almost everything, or everything really he says about himself is actually true.

Duly noted. So far, it’s fine, nothing special, but not crap. Good visuals. I don’t think influencers can be made interesting, but the film gives it its best shot.
It’s an odd film, actually. Something about it is unpleasant. Which is not to say it’s crap, but that it has a nasty vibe (to me).

Was the movie "excluding the end obviously or maybe? i hope not" based on the actors life?

It's not entirely based on the actor's life, he never came to America and fell in love with a prostitute, he was asexual according to him, maybe because of the life he lived. His mother was a prostitute and had him, neglected him, not feeding him, he developed problems, physical and mental problems and was putted away during the nazis in a mental institution, there he suffered all kinds of things, some which he talks in the movie. Herzog fond him in a factory working with a forklift, he decided to use him for the film, no one liked Bruno, they made fun of him, singing in the streets and patios, no one cared about him, and then Herzog makes a movie about him and all of the sudden he's more important now. When he went to Cannes, he started singing outside, they called the police thinking he was a beggar and he went to jail, they didn't know he was the main character in the movie. He belonged to a movement called no-art (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NO!art). He was an artist, musician, painter, poet... and had problems, like most of them do.
The ending was all Herzog's, no one liked it back then, all his crew went away and he had to do it all himself. He later said was the best scene he ever filmed. It's a depressing scene, we are the chicken always dancing to the music, slaves of our patterns and how they say we must act, this was in my opinion the director's view. Bruno's death was like saying why people choose to commit suicide, or is even darker, that people should commit in such conditions.

Rewatching for the fifth time or something, Mark Rylance is indeed a marvelous actor, I don't know what's with Great Britain, the water there, maybe, but they produce the finest actors. A man who drives this car deserves all the praise. We're reminded sometimes of the "hidden" talents on the stages, the theaters, they mostly stay there.

I certainly appreciate its all-round brilliance and I love Bale. The film is beautiful, with all the ambiguity the word entails. But I find myself thinking I preferred The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
This was a strange experience. I feel like the film really packs a punch in its last 2/3s, much like Breaking Bad, but the opening section really doesn’t grip as much. Still a bit conflicted about it.

Yeah, I’ve seen the old one, I definitely prefer the 2007 version. I think this kind of links back to what I wrote recently about me tending to connect more with the contemporary aesthetic when it comes to visuals. The old one is great too, no question there.
I mentioned TAJJBCRF because it’s probably the only western (if you don’t count There Will Be Blood) that’s ever impressed me as a film in its own right, without me thinking, There goes a western. But the 2007 3:10 definitely wins over the original, likely due to Crowe/Bale chemistry. Though I also think the concept of ‘honour’ is much harder to sell/ground for a contemporary audience.
Crowe was also very good indeed.

So I just asked my friend if he saw Lucy and apparently he saw a lot of other movies from the same director (He remembered the director of the movies? who does that?...Names are hard! I know it's normal to know movie directors, but I can barely remember movie names), he mentioned:
The Professional (Léon) - He said something about young Natalie Portman, count me in
The Fifth Element - This one even I know it's a classic, I've seen references of it all the time
Wasabi - He told me he somehow watches this movie a lot, for no particular reason, so it intrigues me now, plus cute asian girl
I'm thinking about watching one of those, just not sure which one first. One might not be from the same director, these are the ones i wrote down, we might have probably went to a different topic half way after all.
Edit: Oh and Luca and Raya and the Last Dragon for animated movies

I beg your indulgence my friend. Eighteen years ago, I left a girl so like your lovely wife to go to war...She was my wife. Have you ever heard of Kurgaal? It is a prison below Amsk...Many men have gone there. Few have returned. I have returned. After fifteen years, I have returned.

It has been a long time Hjalmar. The years have been kind to you.

I am not going to see the remake. The casting is perfect for this film. Hoffman really manages to provoke me everytime i have seen it. Even though i have seen it a few times over the years. Just how stubborn he is, and how he chooses to ignore all the negative actions against him. Of course he uses it as a mechanism to protect himself. Like Shelley Duvalls character in 3 women e.g.
I usually stay far away from remakes.

I did start watching it yesterday, but I was too tired to focus on anything and ended up not watching the full thing.

Gonna watch over two nights: Indecent Proposal. I wanna get through all of Adrian Lyne's films before his new one comes out. It's not the best, but parts of it made me smile.
And I wanna thank Lyne for putting in Sade's No Ordinary Lovr in the first act.
