Rewatching .. yes, OK, yes, I admit it: It's a Wonderful Life. The advantage of having seen a movie at least a dozen times previously over several decades is that you begin to focus on details. This time: Jimmy Stewart's expressions, both when the camera has locked him in a closeup but even when he's just watching or reacting to another focus character.

I remember hearing (or reading?) a story about the scene where he's in the bar, praying, begging god for a break. Apparently they'd done a setup for lighting, and he was supposed to go through the scene as a test. So the camera was far away at the edge of the room. And Jimmy Stewart gets into the scene and gives that wrenching performance. But he's too small in the frame for it to have impact. Capra asks him if he can do it again, and Jimmy Stewart says he just couldn't do that again.

So story goes that they pulled an all-nighter, enlarging the scene frame by frame. I've peered at it closely and can't tell if I think this is true. I've never run across this tale recounted elsewhere.

But regardless, it's a powerful bit of acting.

One of the movies we've rewatched the most. Just comfortable and satisfying, with an ending that's not overdone.

I once had a discussion with a friend comparing this to the somewhat contemporaneous Four Weddings and a Funeral. He felt Four Weddings was a more authentic look at romantic love, and I had to set him straight that they were both old-fashioned throwbacks. Only Four Weddings was just a far too forgiving of unforgivable behavior.

I was thinking about this while watching it yesterday. I find Sleepless… mostly authentic, what stands out to me isn’t the well-timed coincidences but the sheer effort people put into finding love. Made me think of how much legwork phones did in terms of one being able to judge if one liked one’s romantic interest’s voice, the personality vibes. I haven’t rewatched Four Weddings… in about two decades, so very hard to tell (maybe I should revisit it). But I remember finding it a bit too British! I’m British but sometimes these things feel like a pastiche.

I’m almost tempted to spend a few days watching romantic films, but they are so hard to get right and I’m so cynical that it’s very rare that any of them ‘get’ me. But this one certainly did. I also love Before Sunrise and its sequels, Call Me By Your Name, etc., so it’s not hopeless.

Having a ‘light film’ week. Loving this already. The office seems so shocking nowadays. Surreal, like it’s a sci-fi movie. I suppose it’s a bit of a precursor to Devil Wears Prada, too.

Claude Lanzmann's Shoah and other Holocaust films are my ticket for the forseeable future as i listen to my books, it's the best film to look at while listening to literature that i can think of so far, the only things that surpass it are those stock footage videos and home movies from the past, the sights of the 60's to early 00's, shopping malls, city tours, school yearbooks and run down home interiors, in Shoah you get natural settings, people's faces, and vintage city locations that go so well with hearing the spoken word.

Might as well settle in and finally watch Ben-Hur (1959). I’ve avoided doing so for so long not because it didn’t look good or anything, but anything over 3 hours is a big ask sometimes due to work.
But, it’s leaving Tubi so might as well. Won’t be able to finish it tonight but maybe tomorrow after work.
Which won’t be until after 2 AM because of OT during the week since we had off the last two days. Oh well. Might as well get it marked off my watchlist.

Well personally I think it's a great movie on its own merits. It does a great job capturing the awkwardness of comparing the scenes you film to the things that happen behind the camera. That seems to be the strongest point, although the lead character himself is highly entertaining as well.

I haven't gotten to anything since Christmas when I watched a film to pass the time. Maybe I can watch Torn Curtain tomorrow after the baby shower. IMDb makes it sound tame enough that I can watch it in the middle of the afternoon.

I might try to get Dark Knight Returns Part 1 in at some point tonight since it's about 50 minutes shorter than Torn Curtain. Being nearly an hour shorter is beneficial for me.

I wasn't that sleepy, so I went with Torn Curtain. After 40 minutes, I was sleepy, which is not the fault of the movie, so I went to bed. Then I wasn't sleepy anymore. However instead of going through the trouble of switching rooms I just played a game. I'll resume the movie later this afternoon when we get back. It's okay so far.

It's another terrific one from Robert Eggers. This is a big hill to climb; remaking Nosferatu, the most legendary horror movie ever. The old one was made in Germany, 1922, silent, of course, starring the mysterious actor Max Shreck, probably a pseudonym, playing the vampire. I probably need to see it again, since, as a long time fan of vampire movies, I saw elements of other movies, especially Bram Stoker's Dracula and, of course, the 1922 version of Nosferatu, not to forget, the actual 1890's book by Bram Stoker.

It's really creepy and dark (literally, shot in dim light), malignant in its cadaverous evil, color without color. No surprise, full of coffins, jump scares, Willam Dafoe and Bill Skarsgard being creepy, and Lily Rose Depp with tears of blood, lots of rats (as in the book), creepy castles and fog. It's seriously retro, but amped up in a way that would not happen in 1931.

I got to the 1:33 hour mark of Torn Curtain this morning. The kiddos frequently needed help and then I was on tech support and then I needed to get ready to go so I haven't finished it yet. It's a good film although Paul Newman really seems out of his element. Julie Andrews and those German-esque guys are good. I liked Hitchcock's cameo. The story is neat too. I like Cold War espionage.

Addendum; all done! Some thoughts on Torn Curtain are that it's decent. I liked it overall. Seeing someone in the audience when you're performing doesn't happen. I guess the house lights were rather bright, for some reason. That, as a theatre person, bugged me. Eh well it's fine. It worked for the flow and I could get past it. The ballerina seeing him made it dramatic. I liked the ending.

I wouldn't say Torn Curtain is one of Hitchcock's best. I would say it is good though. One thing I thought was awesome was the sequence early in the film that felt like an homage to Suspicion. In Suspicion, Johnnie takes Lina up on a gusting hill and he grabs at her and it startles her. Here, Michael took Sarah up a gusting hill and he grabs at her and she resists. They looked identical. It did not look like an accident.

A Complete Unknown was tonight's flick. It's really quite good, with Timothee Chalamet channeling Bob Dylan in his early years. It's full of tunes, views of Greenwich Village before the era of 10 million dollar condos, back when Manhattan was still scruffy. It also has Ed Norton as Pete Seeger, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez. In an odd touch for a fairly straightforward biopic, Ellie Fanning creates a renamed character, "Sylvie Russo", a thinly veiled version of Suze Rutolo, one of Dylan's lovers, behind him on the motorcycle in the trailer image. There's a sadly dying Woody Guthrie, well along in his Huntington's Disease, played by Scoot McNairy.

If you're familiar with the history of that early 60's Village scene, a lot of it is familiar. Having spent some time there in more recent years and actually recognizing some buildings, I could see that they did a great job of messing up the neighborhood as it presumably was in the 1960's, before it gentrified. I guess they digitally de-aged and scruffified them at the same time.

Anyway, it's a great period piece, and Chalamet did a great job of being Dylan, completely enjoyed it.

It felt a bit long. Lily-Rose absolutely killed it, and yes, I do have more respect for her after this one. She is a great actress (though why she has ruined her face is a mystery). I really wasn’t a fan of everyone shouting quite so much. I don’t remember who said it that shouting isn’t acting. I suppose the possessed women shouting is understandable, but why everything & co strategise must be screamed at the audience is beyond me. Can see why Bill Skarsgård is making a career out of playing monsters, because he is ****ing unrecognisable. I’m also not quite sure what Eggers achieves by renaming everyone. But overall I thought it was a good little atmospheric film, the Romania part especially stood out.
How the hell has Chris Columbus produced this?

I wonder if I would like this. Never seen a movie like this before.

I watched the 1979 version relatively recently, and the 1922 one a few years ago, so to me the story felt incredibly familiar and predictable (they do try to spice it up, but it’s also quite true to the original, so I think having a bit more distance from the story would be useful). But yes, I would say you would enjoy it if you like any gothic fairytale-type films. I wouldn’t call it an overly strong ‘horror’, and it has some strangely Christian themes (female self-sacrifice & purity etc.).

I got distracted and ended up not watching Wanted Dead or Alive. Someone in a Discord server is streaming his play of a DS game, so I've been watching that because I can interact with the guy playing so it's interesting. I know it sounds boring and dumb but it's been enjoyable. This server is cool.

Anyway I'm still going to try to get to the movie soon. Today may not be great because the carpets are being cleaned. I swear I'm not making shit up just to not watch the film. I want to watch it. Stuff keeps happening. I can try watching it tonight after the kiddos are in bed.

Update time; as soon as the kids are settled in bed, I'm going to watch Wanted Dead or Alive. Yeah that sounds good.

A rewatch of this classic - one of the great films about journalists (https://www.top10films.co.uk/73715-grabbing-the-headlines-32-great-movies-about-journalists/). Such a great and hilarious film. Wow, I loved it. Benji is awesome. He is so cool. That random ****ing durag. I absolutely adore such films.
The ‘how are you all feeling’ bit was a bit strange and off-putting, a bit too American/corporate/‘Hollywoody’, as my father says, in a way, but maybe that’s what it was meant to communicate. The fact that David didn’t give Benji a hug is mad, though.

Ah well. She never was much of an actress, but somehow I like her face.

MovieGal, today I learnt Mads has a brother! I kept thinking this guy’s face looked familiar but thought I was making it up. Then today I see ‘Mikkelsen’ in the credits. A blasphemous thought, but he might actually be more attractive than Mads…? Less of a presence, though, for sure.

I have known that for many, many years. He's in several films I have seen.

Lars is under contract with Disney as Mads is.

Lars is older than Mads.

I'm thinking of watching Fall this evening. It sounds simple and exciting. Fall also isn't that long a movie, so that's cool. I'll wait for kiddo to bedify first. The other one is already in bed. We're halfway there!

Addendum; I fell asleep (ha!) so I'll give it a go today. I could have watched it with the kiddos at school except one kiddo stayed home so that got a bit tricky. I can try again tonight.

Update; after taking my nightly prescriptions, it's no euphemism, I plan to watch Fall. It'll happen this time. I have a tendency to procrastinate.

Edit; I watched Fall! Thoughts on the other thread. Spoiler alert; they aren't that positive.

Remember Eisenberg’s interview about this one, so super-interested (my mother is also researching her Polish roots). And of course Kieran is my favourite Culkin.

Tomorrow night I aim to get to Visitor Q. I'll work on my film I'm making and then watch Visitor Q. That sounds like a really good plan. Then I can finally (finally!) take it off of my Watch List where it's been since I restarted my IMDb account.

I forgot about playoff football. I may not have time to work on my project and watch Visitor Q tonight so I'll probably watch the movie tonight and work on the project tomorrow.

Somewhat jarring to see a 2025 movie, but I guess it’s time!
Julia is great as ever (I hope she never changes her hair, it’s a trademark at this point). Overall, it’s atmospheric stuff that lacks substance. The plot is moving a bit too fast. People say there is no such thing, that everything exists to move the plot. I used to think so, to an extent, but now I disagree.
Always nice when the kid version of the character looks exactly like the adult version, though. So rare.
I guess we don’t get to have characters saying ‘We’re tough people’ unironically in a movie. Genre also really needs to stop presenting everything as a virus.
There is the one great scene with that arm, though.
I did think the angle with the mother being the less favoured/less loved parent (and also more career-oriented and more ‘tough’) is pretty interesting and addressed in an unusual way here. I wish the film spent much, much more time on that dynamic (maybe even focused on that entirely while using the speculative element as a hook).
Didn’t like the ’I love my little girl’/‘telepathy’ bit at all. Far too corny/cheesy.
I really disliked The Invisible Man at the time, so I suppose that figures.

The last Lynch film of the major ten: Wild at Heart. As a guy who loves it when artists go out of their comfort zones, and especially after seeing The Straight Story, I really wanna see how this goes. Road movies are a hard one to nail for me, as I've found even movies like Paris Texas to be overrated, and that The Straight Story just barely made it to a "great movie," but if I ended up 100'ing Natural Born Killers, I might really enjoy this.

It's not tonight, though I put in a request at the library for James Cameron's Aliens. I actually had it on loan from them one other time except I couldn't find the time to watch it. That should change this time, once I get it. I just don't know when that'll be. Hopefully by the end of this week (unless someone has checked it out within the last three weeks) (then it could be a bit).

I'm going to watch Even the Wind Is Afraid tonight after the kiddos are picked up and I've taken prescriptions. I found it on a site I'm not allowed to share because someone says it's dirty (it isn't). I'll be watching on Tubi and not the other site since the other site charges, although then I'd get to own it. I'll watch it first before buying a copy.

Addendum; okay I'm 22 minutes into it. I didn't know it's in Spanish which is cool. I am simply surprised. I stopped watching because I had to answer a couple of emails about a game I'm trying to set up. I'll resume it here in a bit. I also don't know why the 16-year olds are made to look like they're 21 or why we're watching them shower. Hm... Overall the film is all right. That shot before I paused was pretty unsettling so that's cool because Even the Wind Is Afraid is a horror.

Addendum 2; Even the Wind Is Afraid improved scene upon scene for the longest time until it rather leveled off at "awesome". I thought almost everyone did a great job. Some of the actors were eh. Most of the actresses were great. There was one, possibly two, in the smaller roles who weren't as good as the others, which is probably why they had the smaller parts. I'm not sure. I love the ending too. I won't spoil it for my curious comrades.

It won't be tonight because I really need sleep after last night and what's tomorrow morning. I aim to watch Aliens tomorrow instead of tonight. My mom picked it up this morning from the library. I think this is the third time I've checked it out from the library. I know of one definite other time, although I can't quite remember a third although I'm convinced there was a third. Please tell naught of what happens. I know a lot of it is in pop culture and I know some pieces hither and thither. I just want to be able to discover it on my own.

This is incredible.
https://pad.mymovies.it/filmclub/2024/07/219/locandinapg1.jpg
I don’t like the yellow subtitles, in some scenes (full of light and where there’s too much white), they are utterly unreadable, but everything feels very intentional here, so I imagine this was, too. The intermission was an excellent move.
No wonder I’ve had a crush on Brody all my life, he’s a genius.
It is sad AI is needed to make this, but I guess I’d be a hypocrite if I said I didn’t love it. It somewhat reminded me of Synecdoche, New York. Upon reflection, though, it seems that AI somewhat helps to add scale to things, make them bigger in every possible way, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. This could have used a bit more discipline and be more selective about what it’s saying/showing. It doesn’t really justify its running time — I say that as someone who loves quite a few 3-hour+ films (Inland Empire, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Leopard, etc.). Definitely very broad and I can see how people might get exasperated.
