The first one has a lot of setup, but the second and third really deliver on the action. Good trilogy.

Good start with number one. Mifune kept the energy level high , without the swordfights. I feel like jumping straight to number two. Maby i have to wait until afternoon.

Not my kind of thing at all, but competently made - though it’s bizarre how it’s described as a thriller “with a twist” the same way as Hush was for the same reason. Something unsettling about that.

While I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this myself yet, this is actually a combination of Sword of Veangence and Baby Cary at River Styx with an English dub. They tried to pass it off as an original film.

Wow, this is decadently terrific in a very high Victorian sort of way. I have not watched Bram Stoker's Dracula in a while. We forget that in those stilted times, Stoker's book was considered to be quite racy, but it's fairly tame in our time. When Coppola did his version, he amped up the Victorian version of sexy, as well as the colors and sounds, so that this movie is really delightfully crazy. It's somewhat closer to Stoker than most Dracuala movies, but also draws on the more recent discoveries about Prince Vlad, the historical Dracula. It's really enjoyable if you like this sort of thing. Anthony Perkins chews the scenery and Gary Oldman chews the necks. Colors are amped up, bosoms heave, Dracula snarls and wolves growl. Lucy looks great coming out of her coffin. What more could you want in a vampire movie.

Hell, no. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s the antithesis of what I enjoy. There’s something immeasurably ridiculous about the concept, rendered still more ridiculous here. Haley Bennett sure looks a lot like a young Jennifer Lawrence, though.
Got to give it to Dinklage: he plays dead very well.

Well. I remember watching Face/Off back in the day and my friend saying, “I just can’t take it seriously - suspension of disbelief is impossible.” This is how I feel about this one. The masks and all a bit ridiculous.
Dano was one thousand per cent worth it, though, as usual, but comes in far too late.

So you only began liking it about halfway through? How come you stopped watching those first few times? I was instantly hooked. To be fair, though, these days I do have to force myself through some films more than in the past.

The violence of it repulsed me. One needed to see the entire movie to put things into perspective.

When I dug into Anger a few years ago, I found enough of them were on YouTube in decent quality. UbuWeb is worth a look as well, although quality tends to be hit or miss on there. I think there's been some decent DVD or Blu-ray releases of his work as well, if you need to go down that route.

Netrebko is world-famous as a Russian opera singer. I’m not sure it’s right to ask artistes to take a stand if they choose not to. In any event she supports Putin & is disinclined to do otherwise.

My cheesy movie of the night, except that it's actually not all that cheesy. It's Them!, set in 1954 (the present at that moment), starring James Arness and James Whitmore, a somewhat surprising cast for a movie like this. It's a dusty southwestern town and, all of a sudden, giant ants are devouring the citizenry. The FBI gets involved and everybody is worried.

What's interesting about this, a cheesy big bug plot, is that everybody plays it straight. It's a better movie than I would expect, decent acting, and, if you can believe in giant ants, the rest of the plot is fairly smart and believable. Well shot and acted, glorious black and white with hints about atomic paranoia.

Yes!

I've read some criticisms of it, and I think some of them are valid, but dang if I didn't love both the connection between the backstory and the "now" story of it and also some really bold visual elements toward the end. I will really look forward to your thoughts when you finish.

Also, the lead actor (who starred in God's Own Country) is really solid, in my opinion. I think that he gives a lot of nuance (and, to be fair, so does the screenplay) to a character who could have been very one-dimensional. Once you finish the film I hope you'll get what I mean.

I liked it. Wouldn’t go out of my way for a re-watch, but if I saw the dvd for sale someplace most likely I would buy it.

Have you seen Ozon's Young and Beautiful?

There are some rare gems that are so erotic but not to the point of being over the top, and none are American films.

Indeed not. I have seen Young and Beautiful, and it is good, but my favourite Ozons for now are probably Swimming Pool and In the House. Have you seen L’Amant Double? That seemed laughably bad to me, but also kind of… engrossing?

I have not seen any newer Ozon.

I have seen Swimming Pool as a past friend of mine has a thing for Charlotte Rampling. I have seen some of his older works.

When it comes to sexuality in cinema I feel Breillat has some great cinema.

Other films I was thinking about was Juila Leigh's Sleeping Beauty and Bonello's House of Tolerance.

I wasn’t obsessed, but I did like it. Generally have a lot of respect for Wheatley.

It Came From Beneath the Sea - i great piece of Ray Harryhausen FX - A giant octopus attacks ships and then San Francisco. Witnesses are thought to be crazy of course, even though a ship has been sunk and surviving crew all saw the same thing. When authorities begin to believe, of course they want to keep it secret "to avoid panic". The military gets involved so the producers found a good use for a lot of uniforms left over from WW II movies.

It has Kenneth Tobey and Faith Domergue, both veteran performers in B movies. Harryhausen didn't have much of a budget to work with so the giant octopus had only six arms. Image quality on this Mill Creek DVD is really pretty good.

I have watched this so many times. My interest lies in Ancient Egypt. Lol I did a presentation on The Process of Mummification.

This, The Pyramid and The Mummy movie are really my "go to" films.
