Oh, ffs. This disgusting exaggerated drama and obnoxious ‘diverse’ people who behave like clowns, but no remotely appealing sex (nor a single emotionally grounded or psychologically coherent scene). The world sure is ending.

I fell asleep watching this. I only remember wondering "was Abraham Lincoln gay?"

A young Orthodox Jewish (Hasidic) woman dies in childbirth, and her 18-year-old sister is forced by all families involved to cancel her upcoming marriage to a man she likes and marry her widowed brother-in-law instead. I love many Israeli films and have seen a fair few, but this was quite unusual and, indeed, visually stunning. I’d say give it a try.

Yeah, well, you sort of know how I feel about that. Still very conflicted, but it does seem like what my dear mother would call ‘normal good sex’ is somewhat lacking in entertainment today.

Anyway, not that I blame her for not being a fan of it all. A few good friends live in Israel, my father is seriously considering moving there, and I had my surgery there, so I know it well, in a way, or so I feel, until I remember I only deal with the largely non-religious people/communities, which feels like a whole other planet.

One of my reactions when I watched Fill the Void was actually, Nah, I couldn’t do that… Many years ago a part of me sort of considered it.

It’s very unusual. Amazon helpfully described it as a ‘comedy’ which… it ain’t, but I’m very happy about that.

Not my cup of tea, as it’s teeming with fashionable misandry and the bloody PC propaganda. But it’s not bad, some bits are very watchable. The cast is terrific, and it definitely has a vibe when it comes to world building and such.
The ‘reveal’ is exactly that bad, though. What a manipulative, shocking and pathetic thing to do. I suppose I understand the director’s take, but on a personal/human level, I wouldn’t wish that kind of thing on a child.

Haven’t seen it yet, but don’t they have reason for “misandry”? Very good reasons if I’m reading the reviews properly.

Naturally. But it’s like incels saying they have a reason for ‘misogyny’. I actually meant the director/producers/people involved seem to be exhibiting misandry, not the characters. I felt drugging a teenage boy and tying him up and taking him away from the men/his father against his will because men are bad is, well, I know people do that and that’s certainly a woman’s right, but she’s in the very least taking away the exact same choice she wants so desperately to have/feels so entitled to. I feel boys have a right to grow up with at least a single male figure in their lives, rather than in a society of Amazons. Anyway, the film until that point was fine, well-made, but it sort of had this air of extreme one-sidedness, with Whishaw who tends to play gay men being sold as a bit of a sexless eunuch exception, which is even weirder.

I don’t know. I like films about isolated communes, so on that level it was perfectly watchable.

Yeah, it's not actually a movie, but it's more cinematic than most movies, an episode from that great, great TV anthology, the old 1960's Outer Limits. It's one of their best episodes, written by sci-fi author Harlan Ellison - The Demon With the Glass Hand. A man awakes in an empty world, only populated by dark-eyed goons who are out to get him. They wear medallions that, when removed, disintegrate them. He has a glass hand with no fingers. He finds a strange, disoriented woman who helps him and realizes that the hand contains the key to the entire population of the earth, which has been digitally stored on a piece of wire as a way to escape a plague, if only they can find the fingers. The hand is a communication device and a computer. This guy is the guardian of the human race. He's also an android, the eternal man, waiting a thousand years to restore humanity.

It's shot in the style of German Expressionism, a sort of Cabinet of Dr Caligari, film noir, with dark black and white weirdness and it just might be the strangest episode in the famous/infamous second season.

It won a couple of sci-fi awards for the Ellison script, which is genuinely haunting.

I just learned that there were plans to make a 3rd in the sequence, with Chinatown and The Two Jakes being #1 and #2.

In the first, the issue was water supply; the second was real estate; and the third would have been oil.

The idea was pretty much scrapped when Nicholson became too old, and then retired from acting. But I think a suitable protagonist could be found, and written in such a way that the character would be Jake Gittes' son, nephew, or some such. Perhaps they could even entice Nicholson to direct it, as he did in "Jakes".

Robert Towne is most likely too old to write the screenplay, as he did for the first two, but I'm sure there are a bunch of writers who could write a great one.

Incidentally I loved The Two Jakes, although I had to watch it 3 times to thoroughly understand it. IMO it would have been incomprehensible without the voice-over narration.

I've never seen Chinatown and to tell you the truth, I found The Two Jakes rather boring. Not enough suspense. Sorry.

Yes it was good/great, some similarities with Pelham but overall different. Much more focus on the heist preparation/planning than the actual heist.

Took your tip and watched it last night. Very enjoyable late '60s heist film that took quite a few liberties with the Great Train Robbery. I'd never seen it. Stanley Baker always put me in mind a little of Sean Connery.

The graininess of the late '60s-'70s films is so recognizable. I often wondered about that, and then I heard a film expert say that it was due to the film stock of the day. Later the film was of higher quality, and then of course digital came along.

Tonight was Scream VI - I recall way back when, seeing the first one. Since then I missed the others but did see zillions of kids with those halloween costumes. Consequently, I don't really know that much about the Scream-i-Verse, can't cite characters and backgrounds, no backstory, no elucidation of the origin of the monster. I just saw it as a cheesy stabber movie with the usual invulnerable villain slaughtering his way through the local population.

I found the narrative to be unclear ( mainly because of my ignorance of movies 2 - 5), but I don't really think it mattered very much. It had the usual cast of clueless characters, teenagers who are stab-fodder. evil adults and huge amounts of fake blood....fodder for a whole new crop of cast members who can establish themselves as scream queens.

Not much else seemed to be in the movie queue tonight, but so it goes. IMDB has it as a 7.5 but really?

Consider this also posted in "Movies you couldn't even finish." I started a book years ago, got to technical for me, I watched a part of the movie, was bothered by the fact that it went over what I read way to quickly, and haven't touched either since. Now that I've read a couple books by the same author, I'm ready to watch the movie THEN read the book. I'm glad I never got rid of it. That movie and book is The Firm.

(To the original poster)

You have to know something about Taxi Driver before you watch it. As good as a movie as it is, there are some ethical problems with the production. During the run-up to production, to get into character, Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel kidnapped and kept Cybil Shepard in their basement for a month, taunting her routinely (when they were even down there to keep her company), and forcing her to read her lines over and over again, only leaving her rat feces for food. Hmmmm...logical problems - It's Inside, a new flick with that most intense of actors, Willem Dafoe. This time, he's a high-stakes heist guy, hitting a high-up Midtown Manhattan condo that has lots of megabucks art. Things go wrong, however, and the condo self locks, leaving Dafoe's character locked in. He can't get out, phones don't work and food's scarce. Even water is shut off, leaving him to scavenge. Months go by. Dafoe's beard never gets past about 2 weeks. Somehow the food lasts through seasonal changes even though it starts with crackers and jars of caviar and no water or anything else.

In these kind of movies, you need to keep things somewhat logical, otherwise the people like me get aggravated and stop paying attention. Script continuity and script logic do count. Oh well.

Doesn’t she play Rue’s younger sister in Euphoria?

Very good but ignored movie. Robert Mitchum is in it, too.. I saw this again a second time, and still good. I like these kinds of movies. "The Night Digger" is in the ball park.

I also think Elizabeth Taylor was at her best around that time. And most attractive.

I don't know how to re-explain. I wonder what the ratio is.. Do a majority of people actually watch all these videos that night? I'll check and correspond (when I see a movie I like here) on the "Last Movie", but it's also possible people don't want to review them with even a 1-10 score.

Hmm. I would assume most people do, I certainly do, but then in cases where I get a blasting migraine, of course I might finish watching it the next morning. Does it make such a big difference? I don’t bother rating most things.

Will try to forget the Donnie Yen drama and just watch the thing.

Largely agree with the opinions expressed in the film’s own thread that 4 is a little below 1 and 2 quality-wise but above 3. Overall, the action is engaging. Also, I know people will think I’m deliberately being controversial/contrarian/annoying, but Donnie Yen makes this film, he brings it to life, and yes, he is cooler than Keanu (no wonder they didn’t dare kill him off). Donnie Yen rocks as far as this particular film is concerned. Obviously targeting the Asian market and all, but good for them.
