State of Siege. A bit slow at first, but the political discussions add quite a bit to the story. Music's a little weird, though.

I did feel rather guilty for wasting my life, and I was also working while it was on. But I do finish most films I start. The last one I actually bailed on was Military Wives, and I feel like I only attempted that because I usually love KST.

I should probably bail on more films. But for now, I find myself going back to my ‘continue watching’ pile on Prime, Netflix etc. days later and kind of making my way through them. I don’t consider myself that picky, but I haven’t truly enjoyed a new movie in a long time.

I'm halfway through The Philadelphia Story. I'm really liking the storytelling so far, but... is this really supposed to be a comedy? Or is it just a light-hearted romance movie? RYM tagged this as a rom-com and a screwball, but there really doesn't seem to be any "screwball" moments until Jimmy Stewart gets drunk.

Something about the intonation in the Japanese language always sounds exaggerated. Not as mind-blowing as I was hoping, but some bits of it are pretty amasing, such as the face in the clouds.

Yikes. I got a re-mastered blue ray of this and it's so delightfully decadent and excessive. It's a melodrama, mainly done with old school stage props, rain machines, lightning flashes, wolf howls and makeup. The first versions of this story after the book were, in fact, stage shows.
This one is Francis Ford Coppola's version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Recalling what a decadent, sinful potboiler of a story the original book was by 1890's standards, to make it work for an audience of this era, it had to be cranked up for modern tastes and expectations. This version does it and cranks it with saturated colors and graphic sequences. And....the lunatic asylum sequence features an over-the-top Tom Waits (if that's possible) as Renfield, the lunatic.
It's a fun movie for old-school horror fans.

It's The Blob, the 50's version of course, starring Steve McQueen and Anita Corsault. The real star, however, is 50,000 pounds of sentient, mobile, corrosive strawberry jam that attacks the town. It also has that great intro theme song, Beware of the Blob, written by Bert Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David, sung by The Five Blobs, one of the first hit songs by Bacharach and David.

After seeing The Blob, I had to pull this one off the shelf - The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It's a sort of prequel, expanded events from the first chapter of Dracula (the book, that is) when a crew of a cursed ship is being consumed, one by one, by the bloodsucker, who can take on several forms. This one plays it dead straight, a fairly believable tale of what would happen with Dracula on a small ship. It would not be good. Unlike a lot of such movies, which are fairly campy, this one is quite sad and tragic.

The narrative structure of this film is immensely confusing. I realise the exact same thing happened to Genghis Khan’s mother as later did to his wife. But this isn’t really something one can show concurrently and not expect the audience to be very lost, unless they know something about Genghis Khan or Mongolian tribal culture.

The casting is absolutely bizarre.
The lead is superb. His scenes it could be a top quality Ming-liang Tsai.
Everyone else - especially the lead supporting role of his nr 2 - are absolutely dreadful.
The actress playing his niece is fine. It's mainly that terrible nr 2, plus some of the extras.

The movie is largely about DV, and I personally don't feel it did a very good job of tackling that subject, but to be fair, it would probably be very difficult for a mass-market movie to do a really good job of addressing the subject.

Haven’t seen that yet. I’m hearing mixed things but might eventually get to it, who knows. Been reading about Durov due to the nature of my job, and even more convinced now that Tatum just doesn’t work at all for that type of persona. Gimme David Tennant, or something. But then, I’m biased towards Tennant.
On DV, I am a lifelong fan of Wüthering Heights and think that, well, this kind of unhealthy/abusive relationship porn has endured for centuries for a reason. It does, I think, work really well as a story, it taps into something very primal and animalistic in human nature, if only that women are physically weaker and must always contend with the male capacity for violence. So in that sense, I rather boringly and predictably disagree. I wish there were more films being made that unabashedly portrayed these types of relationships where women choose not to leave, with no moralising, ‘moral lessons’, ‘empowerment’ and so forth. In terms of what appeals to me, on a narrative level, that would be a ‘mass market movie’, if you will, that’s about something else entirely but happens to feature an abusive relationship and doesn’t ‘interrogate’ that in the slightest. The Conformist is so much better for just showing what it chooses to show, including what one might call, I guess, that sort of violence, while not dwelling or moralising.
Anyway, I doubt I’ll like this very much, but there’s nothing really showing now that I’m interested in, so this’ll have to do. On Sunday I plan to watch Sing Sing which I’m even less enthused by.
Yeah, this is very lame. The psychology of how women end up in these situations is reasonably thorough here, imo, compared with most of this kind of stuff, anyway, but overall it’s just kind of boring (and the very deliberate attempt at a feminist ending of, ‘Oh but she’s going to stay single now! Forever! Like a strong woman!’ Lol. For ****’s sake. Not to mention even that didn’t work out in a clean manner).
What a demented mess of preachy garbage, holy hell.
What a waste of a night. Never trying chick flicks again. I am just genuinely lost as to what possesses people to make that sort of thing.

This is actually okay. A bit too obvious and unintentionally (?) hilarious at times, but very okay. MNS is okay at doing this over-the-top stuff that’s ultimately pretty watchable.
The ending is a bit ridiculous and so very confusing, but I would say this film overall is an improvement for MNS. Saleka does fine playing a pop star. I guess this kind of thing should exist.

Hard to say, actually. I'm still a Shakespeare newbie for the most part. Only play I ever saw was Twelfth Night, and that was a middle school special. I got halfway through the movie before I decided I had to start with an easier adaptation.

This is pretty great. And very Get Out. Never would I ever go anywhere near such people, least of all a remote location. Sarah rocks and looks just like my best friend Sarah. Go figure. My one tiny gripe is that the position of the assistant who chooses not to remember maybe deserves slightly more respectful treatment, rather than being outright ridiculed. After all, this is also a perfectly feasible way of surviving trauma.
The last few minutes of the ending and the Frida as CEO seem like a bit of an overkill, but even that works stylistically.

Omg, I could just tell this is Poser and Adams in the first few seconds, before I saw Poser herself. All their films are very unique.
To be fair, this is a different take on, ahem, the thing. Oof. But it still feels really derivative, absurdly so, and it seems strange to just take The Thing’s concept and take it out into the open, if the best thing about it was its implicitness/paranoid vibe. Very strange movie.
Also, as ever, I don’t see the benefit in making everyone speak with a thick, annoying, awful accent. What does that add to the narrative? Precisely nothing. Authenticity? Oh, please.

The Disney meets Home Alone chiming music is so bizarre and out of place. Also doubt a 12-year-old nowadays would say ‘You are the bane of my existence’. The Casta Diva rendition is nice, though. Hat off to the opera bits of the soundtrack, but otherwise very meh — immensely cheesy and over-emotional.

I’m confused. I know she was the single performer on stage & fabulous reviews.
So now it’s being filmed?
I feel like I don’t even have the words, or the space here, to describe how incredible this production is. It is one of the best plays I have seen in my life (and it’s kind of funny because I don’t even like theatre all that much, compared to my family, obsessed with theatre, classical Russian productions, all that). It is utterly unique and even though I personally often have very mixed feelings on the subject matter and the ‘message’, it floored me.
Everyman cinemas (another highlight of my London life in the last five years; it really is a very different way of doing cinema) run a National Theatre Live series of plays. It’s a film of a live performance of the original production, but sleekly, professionally done (better than the stuff BBC and Channel 4 put out nowadays, for sure).
It makes me think of all those concert films I grew up watching with Barbra Streisand etc. These NT:L plays are spectacularly filmed, you forget that you’re not watching the play live. In my experience, you get the best of both worlds. None of the noise and shuffling and coughing (I’m very sensitive to noise; I’m well aware it’s a ‘me’ problem), but at the same time, the full force of the performance and the visuals and the much better sound.
I thought the National Theatre production of Good with David Tennant was also outstanding, I raved about it only marginally less than I’ve raved about Prima Facie since I first saw it.
Anyway: Prima Facie is a masterpiece. It is absolutely spectacular. It’s being performed now all over the place, including Serbia (that one surprised me!). It’s also really multi-faceted and you can interpret it as one barrister’s professional deformation character study as much as anything else.
I’d definitely check it out, even on YouTube or whenever you can get your hands on a performance in some shape or form. Or who knows, it might eventually come to the States, though I haven’t seen anything about that anywhere.

This is so creepy...The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It's an expansion of the first chapter of the original book version of Dracula, where a ship (the Demeter) drifts into port with nobody alive on board, just a bunch of crates full of dirt. You know it ain't going to end well for the cast of this movie. It's how Dracula gets to England. This movie is really well done, with a good unknown cast and minimal FX. It's sad and tragic because you know how this will end and the drama doesn't flinch for a moment. Unfortunately, it was a bomb and lost money.

Watching it for Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Oh yeah....that version. I recall seeing it for the Cushing/Lee cast and it was pretty good. My favorite was the 1939 version with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, but the later one was also good and added color.
There's 3 "Hounds" I have not seen.

I'm a Terence Stamp fan too.
Of course my first film I saw him was Superman 2. He's in a Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I have seen Teorema which was crazy. I have the Criterion dvd copy. My favorite of his is The Collector from 1965.
He's been in other films and shows I have seen.

theatrical I believe, it was 2 hr 28 min, is the director's cut worth it? I found it mid, with some great shoots and scenes but I don't think I'd be interested to re-watch it tbh

Finally. Big screen, of course.
https://themoviespoiler.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/substance.jpg
Well. I unexpectedly hated that. Can’t recall the last time I hated something so much. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what it was trying to do; but the body horror felt very, excuse the pun, plastic? I feel like this took the wrong lessons from Cronenberg and Possession (one of my favourite movies, which almost feels tarnished by association). Anyway.
I love satire, but my kind of satire is something like Fight Club and Choke, whereas this just felt absurd and, towards the end, lazy. To be fair, the entire cinema laughed hysterically towards the end, but I doubt this was what the film was going for; it was more like perplexed, hysterical giggles. A guy next to me had his head in his hands.
Quite apart from all that, I thought the sci-fi side of things/the ‘world building’ was really inconsistent. Initially I thought the two selves couldn’t exist at the same time; hence the big deal about switching. But if, as it appears towards the end when the two selves fight each other, and was referenced in The Cut review, the two selves can coexist awake, then it’s even more confusing and inconsistent, because what does the ‘original self’ get in this scenario, exactly? Enabling a younger separate self to have fun while she herself suffers at home? What’s the logic/rationale behind making that bargain? IMO this only makes sense if the original self isn’t awake to see the other self partying; and if the younger self can presumably gain weight from the food the older self obsessively cooks, then surely the older self can feel the residue from the partying (if only hangover?).
It also didn’t help that Demi Moore was made to look significantly worse than she actually does in everyday life. I get that this is done to enhance the contrast between the two, but it’s still a very bizarre decision. Whatever was done to her lips (some kind of botched filler vibe?) jars with the idea that she’s a former Hollywood mega-star (which in itself jars with the idea she was until recently the face of a fitness show). Very confusing. But poor Jane Fonda! This was definitely aimed at her.
Mr & Mrs Smith the 2005 movie with Brad Pitt and Anjelina Jolie. Id never seen it before now. Entertaining because I wasnt taking it seriously. I had to put myself in a MARVEL studios, specifically Deadpool, frame of mind the action was so ridiculously unrealistic.

Loved Françoise Dorleac and her makeup. She’s got a very Sharon Tate look, though obviously it’s just a sixties look, Twiggy and all. Didn’t care very much for the film overall, but I do relate to the wife wanting the husband to have some balls for once. Ah well.
