Oh yeah certainly I agree, it's nowhere near as good as Heat or Usual Suspects of Shutter Island. I feel the final act is Collateral's weakest due to it being kinda obvious from the very beginning what's going to happen. I give it about a 3.5.

80%?If you don't count the time when i rated the movie it is like 3-4 times and i have more than 100 posts...I'm not offended,I watched movie it was awesome, and if you notice I mention it only when I'm talking about thrillers or when i want to compare it,because if you want your movie to be good, compare it to The Usual Suspects!I think it is normal thing...I mean i will probably talk about it again(just before you posted this,I created thread thrillers, first post, you can guess it,The Usual...It will go away in few days probably. :D

Maybe not tonight, but I'm planning on checking this film out:

http://www.cinematex.ro/posters/26/movie26369.jpg

This is going to be my 2nd Tarkovsky film. I know that this film is going to be extremely heavy , but I'm ready for that. I really feel Stalker is one of the great works of cinema, and I'm curious to see what else Tarkovsky has in store.

Then later on i'm going to check out something a bit lighter like this:

http://www.impawards.com/2009/posters/district_nine_ver15_xlg.jpg

I've seen snippets from it, but never in full. Not expecting much, but hopefully it's a entertaining sci-fi flick.Hope it's not too heavy-handed with the obvious allegories the movie appears to be toying with.

What an interestingly twisted movie - Side Effects from Steven Soderbergh. It starts out with a murder, when a young wife stabs her husband, who has just gotten out of jail for white collar crime. She has been taking psych meds for depression and seems to have done it in a sleep walking episode, possibly precipitated by the drug that she has been taking, the strangely named "Ablixa". All of a sudden the drug, her psychiatrist and the world of psych meds is on trial.

Then things take a twist. Is this a movie about undisclosed effects of all the drugs pushed on Americans by big pharma companies, or is it a murder mystery? What about her former psychiatrist? How does she play into this? This movie is less of an expose than a film in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock. It's well worth a view if you pay careful attention to the details. As usual for Soderbergh, it's a cut above the usual fare. Rooney Mara and Jude Law are excellent as the troubled wife and the current psychiatrist. Catherine Zeta Jones is downright scary as her former psychiatrist.

The Dark Knight Rises - I didn't care for the film the first time I saw it, I felt incredibly let down after The Dark Knight and the relentless hype for this final film in the trilogy. I decided that given enough time, I should review the film and maybe give it another day in court. I still find it lacking.

It's well shot, but the screenplay takes a LOT of shortcuts in storytelling, some that are excusable, others that are just lazy. The big glaring one? Alfred seemingly knows everything there is to know about Bane, despite having done NO research that we're ever shown. Michael Caine does his best Basil Exposition, but could there have been a more organic way to work Bane's back story into the plot? Also, having his "origin" revealed by a hallucination of Ra's Al Ghul? Really? NO. Just no. That's lazy. Add to this the absolutely minimal screen time that Batman actually has in his own movie, and this just isn't redeemable. Still thumbs down from me.

Despite being almost half the length, Mirror is far less accessible than Stalker, in my opinion, that's not to say it's not great or you won't like it :)

This is the type of the film where the more you think about it the more you end up disliking it. I still like it, I think it's an enjoyable blockbuster. But it is severely flawed and miscalculated in many different ways. I honestly get the vibe that Nolan just did this film because he had to, not because he wanted to.It just feels half-baked and somewhat incompetent. I still think it's one of the better superhero films, but it could have been much better.

I agree with the idea that Nolan seemingly did this because he had to. That vibe is all over the movie. Throughout the film I kept thinking of ways that it could have been done better. I wish luck to Ben Affleck, who will no doubt be given the director's chair for future Batman films, may he do better than this (and judging from The Town and Argo, he will).

Yeah, truth be told I was let down by it too. I guess it's plausible that he didn't want to make it, but it also sounds like he got really into the idea of it being based on A Tale of Two Cities, which is an intriguing idea, but was a bit of a force fit.

It's a good template for some of the themes he wanted to explore, but not at the expense of paying off some of the stuff he'd spend two films building.

Why you are watching it again? It's just another mediocre superhero movie and you didn't like it very much the first time. Nolan's films are not made to be watched more than once, including his best ones, since they rely on the audience's lack of information regarding the plot.

That's an interesting take, Guap, considering the vast majority of his fans (and I would think Nolan himself) would say the opposite. Though, I find myself sympathizing and agreeing with you on several levels here. His films clearly rely on revelation and the lack of omniscience, countered by noir, a genre in which we are typically given information about an outcome known at the beginning of the film. What's the point in watching Nolan's films after you know the twist? I'm not sure, maybe "cool" factors and whatnot. I love to solve puzzles, but I hate to solve puzzles because they're immediately boring once they're solved.

The difference between Nolan's puzzles and a film like The Usual Suspects, is that the film's final revelations usually don't tie everything together. A film like Suspects (which, don't get me wrong, I think is a very bad movie) makes clear what is real and what is not. It could be argued that Nolan's films are purposefully more ambiguous than a typical puzzle movie, something between Suspects and Mulholland Dr. I think that they are purposefully ambiguous (thus, why many people feel the need to rewatch) just in a contrived and sloppy manner. I think of listening to at least an hour's worth of exposition in Inception when the binary ending came about. My thought was, if there was that much exposition, shouldn't I know the "answer" in the ending. Nolan's puzzles in effect are ones that directly formally oppose the rest of his film. Why watch his films a second time if what you're looking for (usually the "answer") isn't informed by what comes before it?

Also, when was the last time I agreed with Guaporense? This is a historic day

Agreed completely. But like bluedeed said, his fans feel totally the opposite. Tell one of his fans that Memento is overrated, for instance, and he'll go "you don't get it bro, it's too deep for you". Even though nothing is deep about it.

For the third one, WB was pushing him to use The Riddler, and they REALLY wanted to cast his Inception star, Leonardo DiCaprio. Nolan said no and we got what we got. I'd have liked the Riddler better, actually...

Tonight's viewing (if my internet decides to cooperate, unlike last night) is a true Christmas classic: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians!

I don't go into great depth in my reviews, neither do the many top critics. Search for "BBC film 2013 reviews", the critic who writes a column for the "BBC film 2013" program, is lucky to make three paragraphs in his reviews. Its not quantity but quality that matters. Most people aren't looking to read an essay when they look for a film review, just a brief a summary of the plot and the rating. Forgive the defensive tone of my reply, I may have misread the subtle critique in your opening statement.

There was no critique intended. I was simply contrasting our different situations. I am sorry if it came off as critical to you, though.

Mine actually started off considerably shorter, but a friend requested that I deepen my analysis. My review of Battle Royale went on far longer than I had intended, but my upcoming ones will be more reigned in.

I am gearing up to start Primal Fear shortly (sadly, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians will have to hold off for another day).

What? The Untouchables? I watched it when it came out on video. I think I've seen it once or twice since and I've seen bits here and there over the years, too. It's always been crap. The difference is now others are coming to the same conclusion. I guess it's a bit like Scarface in reverse. Hated and derided when it was released and then my generation grew up and went, "This is brilliant!" To a lesser extent, the same thing's happening to Cruising.

Just watched it. He sure plays an egotistical piece of crap, but man, what a great film in terms of visuals and music. I didn't want to look away from it for a second. I thought the story was pretty good too and the ending sequence is very satisfying style-wise and story-wise. Great stuff!

I can see why some people might dislike it, though. People who want to sympathize with all the characters or people who don't like musical sequences shouldn't bother to watch this, as they will probably be outraged or bored.

Entertaining indeed! I remember absolutely loving it when I first saw it. It is entertaining, bloody, and the dialogue is Grade-A Tarantino. It's very impressive especially considering the fact that its a directorial debut, although I am aware that Tarantino borrowed heavily from other films to make it.Either way, hope you enjoy it.

The Prestige is good, but it's my least favorite Nolan film. I felt that The Illusionist was a far superior film.

Finishing out the trilogy tonight with Before Midnight. Don't know what to expect, kind of hope its not the last entry in the series. I would love to see another sequel done in like 18 years maybe if the actors and director are still up for it, but I doubt that will happen.

Lector isn't underused, he just has almost nothing to do with it. That's just one of the reasons why it's better than SotL. :D It's not a Lector film.

I can understand though, Brian Cox as Lector is very good, and makes you wonde why they didn't use him more when you could feel the film could benefit perhaps from him. I don't really agree and think he works well, which makes it a shame the film was not so well received and Mann didn't direct any more.

Color me surprised but Pain&Gain is actually a solid film from that dreadful director Michael Bay. It is an extremely messed up,morally reprehensible film.It is really messed up in many different ways, the biggest one being that they turned a horrific real life case into a film that's a large part comedy. This film is sure to offend many, and for good reason. But here's the thing, it works. The visuals are rather nice. They're colorful, vibrant, and indulgent.I'd call the film an extremely dark comedy, and it is absolutely hilarious most of the time.Maybe its because I have a morbid sense of humor. Either way I feel Pain&Gain is an entertaining, dark comedy that I feel might have gotten overlooked or dismissed simply because of Bay's name being attached to it. I honestly think you guys should check it out, and see what you make of it. 3+

Each film is self-contained, but the other two have little touches which add up thematically and character-wise. In other words, it's probably a better experience to have them fresh in your mind when watching a new one, but it's not essential. Neither is what order you watch them, at least for me.

My views on Tarantino is well known. But Robert Rodriguez's segment in Four Rooms is HILARIOUS!

Looks great and it's an '80s movie.

Rewatching Malick's The Thin Red Line.

It's been my first Malick film and I've seen it two years ago. Since I really loved The Tree of Life and To the Wonder (4.5) and liked Days of Heaven and The New World (3.5 and 3 respectively) I feel like rewatching The Thin Red Line. Initial rating - 4 so I hardly believe it will become a 4.5 movie to me, but we will see. Damn, too much popcorn stuff in this post.

It's a bar code for the ratings for visuals, audio, plot, themes and overall rating. Apparently audio quality was really low.

I watched it in 1999. I was 10 at the time. I remember that my father turned the TV off after some time and said it was a bore. :D

Love Young Frankenstein. Such a brilliant film. :yup: Great performances from the main stars and I really love some of its minor characters such as Frau Blücher and Inspector Kemp
