Cool. If you can somehow find a copy, I'd recommend The Seventh Continent, his debut feature. I have yet to see it myself (purely because of its inaccessibility; I may have to eventually resort to 'other options'), but it looks incredible, in my opinion. Also, Time of the Wolf is one of the more interesting dystopian/apocalyptic European films out there too.

I still need to see Amour too. In terms of 'resorting to other options', I'm afraid it was this thread that inspired me to jump on the bay and do a bit of clickin', if you know what I mean...

It's certainly not for everyone as its pacing is a bit ridged and its presentation may come across as too stylistically overt, but I found it to be a remarkably poetic tale that plays out in the veins of a greek tragedy. Also, it has a sublime OST (by the great Nick Cave and Warren Ellis), and generally excellent performances. The book is a lovely read, as well.

It's pretty much a perfect film in my books, slightly reminiscent of a less radical and ostentatious version of the post-98 work of Terrence Malick, particularly The New World.

Why is that?

Beautiful but far too self-conscious.

Yeah, I can see why one would think that. I initially detested the narration (and its 'overtly-classical' approach in general), but those issues seemingly diminished upon rewatches and it has been a strong favourite ever since.

Why is that?

The narration drove me crazy, as did Affleck's whiney, obnoxious performance. I blind bought the movie because I had heard great things about it and was in the mood for a good Western, but was sorely disappointed. It's one of the reasons I almost never blind buy anymore.

Understandable, especially in regards to its narration. I thought Casey Affleck was incredible, though. I found nothing obnoxious about it.

A very bleak, dismal viewing, for sure. My favourite from an otherwise 'so-so' filmmaker in my books. Will be interesting to hear your two cents on this one.

You think Von Trier is a "so-so" filmmaker? I have only seen one film from him so I can't judge, but I did get the vibe that he was trying a bit too hard to shock with Antichrist. Here's hoping I like it.

He's a very audacious filmmaker, never shying away from the delicate, and often being very vigilant in his approach. But yes, some of his films just feel a bit too... conspicuous, for lack of better word. He has some interesting ideas, but I feel his films never truly get the best out of them. Definitely one of the more interesting filmmakers working today, though, there is no doubt about that.

I expect as much, but hey, it has Brad Douriff, it's always nice to see him, even if all his movies seem to suck, minus the first two Child's Play flicks and One Flew.

You really should not let anybody's subjective opinion answer that for you. If you like Dancer in the Dark, then, by all means, continue on with his work, with pieces such Dogville, the Europa trilogy, and, if you are into television, his work on The Kingdom. Antichrist perhaps wasn't the most ideal place to start with von Trier, as it is probably his most gutsy film to date, so don't let that turn your off.

Dancer in the Dark is pretty good, I think.
Von Trier has many interesting films, in my opinion and is certainly worth exploring a little bit further.
At least, if you don't flat out hate his often overly pessimistic approach to most of the topics he treats or his shaky camera.

I'll write a little more when I do my tab post, but I liked it. I liked it a lot. People will criticise it and say its floored because of its complicated script (that kicks in after an hour and a bit in and comes into full force by the end), but I found it to be a very gripping psychological thriller. Lucas mentions Zodiac, and its style does remind you of that film and other Fincher pictures, it looks and feels chilling yet beautiful, helped of course by the wonderful Roger Deakins. Also raises a lot of legal and moral questions, its quite ambitious and at times frustrating because it tries to pack a lot in, but really gets you thinking.

Don't pay a lot of attention to the story. Prisoners is all about atmosphere, just like Se7en. That's why it's so good. Also, the cinematography by Roger Deakins is fantastic. Definitely give it a go.

I think the story is criticised too much though, I mean it is complicated and maybe packs a lot into less time than it needed (despite its running length, like the end is more heavy on story), but it all comes together nicely and really helps explain the characters, especially Alex, and makes you wonder about him as a person, how he has been treated etc.

Anyway, another 2013 film...

2:13 - The tagline for the copy that I have reads: "I haven't been this afraid since Silent of the Lambs or Seven," in one of the quotes.

Right.

I bought you in a six-pack that includes Descendants, Bleeding Rose, Mother's Boys, Asunder, and Salvage. Bleeding Rose may very well be one of the first movies that I have ever seen, so there's that. However, that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable, and the cover actually reminds me a lot of IFC Films' Shadow, which I really enjoyed. I expect something stupid, but hopefully somewhat entertaining.

Three reasons I'm trying this movie-

1) Sexy Celebrity gave it a good review.
2) It's eligible for the MoFo comic list.
3) It's directed by Walter Hill

One thing; I really like violent movies, but I find the title of this movie to be in poor taste. Different things start to bother you as you get older.

Wondering how I rate it this time...

More than two years have passed since I had seen it for the first time. During that time I have seen a countless number of films, including two Tarantino's newest, which I both liked. There are two possibilities, I will either maintain its 2 rating or increase it, as I can't believe I could dislike it even more than the first time. PF begins my 'giving another chance' streak, which probably will be followed by 8 1/2.
