Pickpocket (1959)

My first Bresson. Another important step in my development as a cinephile...

Amazing film! He has a few other great ones, I think it's called "The Escape" - you can tell it's Bresson with his detail to the nuts and bolts, literally.

The last couple Pirates movies remind me of the Metal Gear Solid video games - in how they started off straightforward enough but ended up tossing in so many new plot twists and characters that it makes your head spin by the time it's through - even though it's still fun to watch.

My knowledge of American films of the fifties isn't great yet, so I am working on it. Starting with 1950.

Sunset Blvd. (Billy Wilder) & The Furies (Anthony Mann)

Somebody pick something for me to watch after these:

All About Eve
Armored Car Robbery
The Asphalt Jungle
Born to Be Bad
Branded
The Breaking Point
Broken Arrow
Caged
Cinderella
D.O.A.
The Damned Don't Cry
Destination Moon
Devil's Doorway
The File on Thelma Jordon
Gun Crazy
The Gunfighter
Harvey
House by the River
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
Mystery Street
Outrage
Panic in the Streets
Rio Grande
Stage Fright
Wagon Master
Where Danger Lives
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Winchester '73

All American movies from 1950, most of them are film-noirs.

The Wind Rises

I'm about to go pick them up from the libary. I haven't liked a Miyazaki movie yet, we'll see if any of these will change that.

Castle is best of those three. Wind Rises is the weakest but still great.

JJ I'd personally go with Winchester '73. But yeah All About Eve and The Asphalt Jungle is awesome too.

Nope. The Wind Rises is definitely weak compared to other Miyazaki. :p

What did you think was weak about it compared to his other films?

I personally think it's one of his best, actually. It's no Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro perhaps, but it's definitely of the same level as Porco Rosso, which I feel is at least better than Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and Kiki's Delivery Service (which is a film that I do love as well, I have to say).

I have more difficulty ranking Nausicäa and Princess Mononoke, because I think those are major achievements that I perhaps should revisit sometime in the future to fully grasp their magnitude, so I won't say it's "better" than those two.

The Wind Rises, like every other Miyazaki is beautiful to look at and has a flowing pace so at least it has all the basics, which makes it a decent film. The main problem that I had is the film stops itself from reaching a masterpiece level full of ideas and creativity. For example, the setting of the film. It's set during the pacific war and could have easily been connected to the relationship of the two main characters. Instead, what could've been a poetic commentary done in a visually amazing way on a lot of things, of course including war, is put away for mediocre levels of enchantment and energy.

Also, this a personal reason, but as a Korean I couldn't stand the historical inaccuracies throughout the film.

Not sure if I completely get what you mean by all this.

Let me just say that I think the story of the relationship between the two "main characters" and the setting of WWII in Japan are pretty satisfyingly connected with eachother and that, according to how I interpret the term, I think there's plenty of great "visually poetic" moments in the film with some kind of meaningful resonance. I remember thinking it was a very "rich" film (thematically) after watching it for the first time.

Also, this a personal reason, but as a Korean I couldn't stand the historical inaccuracies throughout the film.

I personally never really care about historical accuracy in fictional films, unless they leave out interesting parts and therefore lessen the story.

I agree. At times I was wondering if there was even any need to put a different spin on things. I wish they toned that aspect down a little. I still enjoy the heck out of them for what they are, though.

Would you guys say The French Connection (1971) is worth going to the theater for? Or would watching at home be better. Saw it was on the top 100 of the 70s but honestly barely heard of it before I saw that.

Cannibal the Musical - Before there was South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone made this, a low budget musical horror comedy. It was made as a student film at the University of Colorado, but it's really well done, the songs are catchy, and it's funny as hell. Troma films, purveyors of hilarious bad taste, rescued it and now it's a bizarro cult classic.

Mona Lisa (1986)
I love this movie. I haven't seen it in years, though. Bob Hoskins was completely robbed that year.

I was thinking about finally giving "Into the Woods" a try.

Into the Woods was a good movie, but if you've seen the Broadway show, don't expect the movie to be as good. It's good, but it's not great.

Options:

Cool Hand Luke

No, I am not expecting too much. I have seen the original cast (the filmed stage version with Bernadette Peters). And I know it would be awfully hard to live up to that. I also know how they altered this musical from the stage show (some of which disappoints me). But as I am a die hard Sondheim fan, I feel as though I must watch it at least once. :)

Anyway, looks like it's probably going to be Cool Hand Luke.

I just bought a dvd collection of four Jimmy Stewart flicks. I've seen one of them (Shop Around the Corner - if you enjoy You've Got Mail, this one is even more sweet and delightful) but the others.... Stratton Story, The FBI Story, and The Spirit of St. Louis I have not seen. Jimmy is one of my favorite actors so I'm hoping I enjoy these three.

Had some really emotional scenes that pack a punch and Reese did a great job. Some real beautiful images too. But not much else for me. Not going run to watch it again anytime soon. A lot of fly by characters she meets on her journey. None very memorable to be honest. Tons of flashbacks. Just not much in the way of memorable stuff to me.Also the way she treats her husband who for all intensive purposes is there for her and supporting her made me hate her. It's definitely worth a view for the journey and Reese's performance. Gets you thinking a bit. But I don't see this sticking with me for long.

Anyways a light 3 out of 5

The Dark Knight Rises - There's a lot I do enjoy about this movie, (Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon Levitt, the Escape from New York feel of second half of the film) and a lot I don't (gaping plot holes, a near total lack of Batman for 75% of the movie), but it isn't as terrible as I previously have stated. It's a good looking film with decent action, and had the misfortune of following The Dark Knight which is a great great movie.

First viewing I was not ready for it mentally so I did not like it all. Second viewing I got a better grasp of it, especially the themes which it's going for. It's a deeply symbolic film about spiritual yearning and exile from one's homeland. It's a very slow film, and i wouldn't advise watching it until you've seen some of Tarkovsky's other films. This one is impenetrable until one is accustomed to Tarkovsky's style.

I would certainly recommend, but it has to be viewed a few times. This isn't a one-watch and done style of film.
