My first Pasolini film. Thought I'd start with this as opposed to Salo.
the underlying tones in that film are just as bad as Salo... but enjoy!

Stalker (1979)
My first Tarkovsky, I'm excited. Actually I have heard quite a bit about this one. I first started hearing about it and seeing images back when I was first looking into Eraserhead and movies of that nature. Stalker's imagery captivated me, but I kind of forgot about it for a while. I didn't even realise at the time that it was Tarkovsky, or that he was a particularly well reputed director. So now that I've been hearing a lot about him on MoFo and Guapo recommended it as his favorite Tarkovsky film, I just decided to watch it right away.
P.S. You are on quite the gore streak eh Cricket?

My favorite from there is The Good the Bad and the Ugly, but I think you would enjoy Cool Hand Luke the most. Persona is great, but very artsy. Definitely one of its kind. Bonnie and Clyde I absolutely detest.
Haven't even heard of the other one.
Vicky may definitely like Cool Hand Luke.

I think I'll watch Persona this afternoon and then maybe another movie later tonight. I have dinner plans this evening so Persona's short run time seems ideal for right now.
Haven't even heard of the other one.
The Children's Hour (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054743/?ref_=nv_sr_1) stars Audrey Hepburn, Shirley Maclaine and James Garner. It's about a couple of teachers that get accused to being lesbians. I'd heard about it awhile back when I was watching a doc on LGBT cinema (it was probably The Celluloid Closet that mentioned it, but I watched another similar doc as well, so I'm not sure). I'd forgotten about it, but then a few MoFos mentioned it in my 60s movie suggestion thread so I put it on my watchlist.
I don't think you're going to like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but I hope I'm wrong.

I'm just about to watch Blade Runner. I'm trying to watch as many classics as I can so that I can contribute more to film discussions. I'm very new here although I am an ardent movie buff. I tried to watch "Raging Bull" yesterday but only got 30 minutes in before I gave up. The make up was horrendous and the fight sequences were utterly and completely unbelievable. "The Fighter"s boxing scenes were infinitely better. Have we come that far in 30 years? Anyway, I'm tired of hearing about "Blade Runner" on "The Big Bang Theory" without understanding the context. Saw "The Matrix" last week and was impressed. Here's hoping "Blade Runner" is half as good as "The Matrix."

^^Great film^^ Enjoy it, MTD.
Can anyone recommend a good thriller / mystery film to watch with my parents tonight? Something with a good story basically that's still reasonably enjoyable - we watched Misery a couple of months back and that's the sort of thing. Not too violent and sex-filled, preferably!

Sure.
Don Hertzfeldt's trilogy: Everything Will Be Ok, I Am So Proud of You, and It's Such a Beautiful Day
Some Pixar: For the Birds, Presto, Partly Cloudy, Lifted, Geri's Game, and Boundin'
Pretty much anything from Tex Avery, e.g.: King-Size Canary, Blitz Wolf, Red Hot Riding Hood, Northwest Hounded Police, Bad Luck Blackie, Screwball Squirrel, and The Screwy Truant
American WWII propaganda: Der Fuehrer's Face (Donald Duck short) and Education for Death: The Making of the Nazi
Soviet: Winnie Pooh, Tale of Tales, and Hedgehog in the Fog
and anything Wallace and Gromit that you can find is worth your time. There is tons of Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry I like too.
I still need to explore a lot of the more "arty" shorts. I think guys like Tyler1, Swan, and Harry Lime have seen more of those.

How long does the short have to be?
I don't think there is any official limit. The Academy Awards folks use a standard of 40 minutes or less.
I haven't figured out where to put reviewed movies yet. Not sure I'm even allowed to after only 20 posts, so I stuck it here. Not meaning to break rules or be a pain, I just had to get it out after seeing the movie.
Just saw "Come and See," a Soviet film from 1985 about WWII and specifically, the devastation of 626 villages in Belarus by the Germans. In 1943, German soldiers rounded up Belarusian villagers, including women and children, forced them into barns and then burned them to the ground. It's interesting to see this kind of subject matter portrayed without the sheen and veneer of Hollywood. Don't believe me that Hollywood has a veneer? Watch this movie and you'll understand. As brutal and intense as Full Metal Jacket is, you get a reprieve from the movie's brutality with the shiny, happy soundtrack, sharp dialogue and familiar faces (Matthew Modine and Dorian Harewood). You get no such reprieve in this film and the results are a blunt realism and a starkness that is truly devastating. The music is sparse, the actors are anonymous and the dialogue is almost non-existent in the second half of the film. I'm not saying this movie is better than Full Metal Jacket, I'm just saying it feels more realistic. Hey, I like Hollywood production values, and they are popular for a reason. Popular music, snappy dialogue and familiar actors are great, but they exist to entertain, not to provide realism. I suppose this movie provides entertainment in the same way a dark Russian novel provides it, but I'm sure it helps to be familiar with Russian cultural heritage to appreciate it.
The film shows a few weeks in the life of a Belarusian teenaged villager (Alexsei Kravchenko) in 1943 during the German occupation. He joins the rebels just before the Germans arrive en masse, meets a girl (Olga Mironova) and manages to find a group of refugees trying to survive on an island. Along with three adult men, he leaves the refugees to find food, almost gets killed and makes his way to a new Belarusian village with an old farmer. This brings you to the part of the movie where you lose all faith in humanity. Germans are not portrayed very kindly from this point on. It helps if you realize that the Soviet Union lost more people (20 million) in the second world war than any country. Most of these were at the hands of Germans who killed over three times more Soviets than Jews. For these reasons, you can see why Germans are portrayed as a drunken group of Jeffrey Dahmer types.
While this isn't a Hollywood production, the acting is surprisingly good. Young Kravchenko pretty much steals this movie. He went through hell during filming, losing one third his bodyweight and almost his mind. Aside from the grueling stunts and meager food, live ammo was used in certain scenes for realism (the cow scene). Mironova is also an excellent actress and if she was better looking, would have fit right in among Hollywood's leading actresses of the 80s. Considering this was a state sponsored film, a lot of money went into it and you can see that with the vast number of extras used throughout. The film spared no expense with costumes either, with the German soldiers appearing as slightly nattier versions of Hollywood soldiers.
If you want a light movie to wind down on a Friday night, this most definitely is not it. If you've lost everything and are thinking of jetting off to Syria to join ISIS, perhaps this movie would provide the emotional catharsis needed to reconsider. 7/10.

I still need to explore a lot of the more "arty" shorts. I think guys like Tyler1, Swan, and Harry Lime have seen more of those.

I haven't figured out where to put reviewed movies yet. Not sure I'm even allowed to after only 20 posts, so I stuck it here.
This isn't the place for a review. This thread is simply to let people know what you're going to watch or sometimes to ask for suggestions of what to watch.
I'd suggest you post reviews in the Rate the Last Movie You Saw (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=10846&highlight=rate+the+last+movie) thread. Or you can start your own thread. You don't need any particular number of posts to start a thread, only to post images and links.

Just broadening his horizons I believe. Or trying to find a cure for insomnia. One or the other. :D
