It's not "good" by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a good time. My favorite part is the when the karate dude just shows up out of nowhere, and just like that leaves with no explanation.

I've watched about 20 minutes so far, and I'm laughing my ass off, but if you aren't familiar with Fassbinder's films and the Pasolini opus, it'll probably come across as an over-the-top mess. Umm...

Interesting. Is Salo and these Fassbinder films:
Liebe ist kälter als der Tod
Die Bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant
Angst essen Seele auf
Die Ehe der Maria Braun
Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss
Berlin Alexanderplatz
enough to enjoy the movie?

Mr Minio
07-24-14, 08:55 PM
Just watched the trailer. What the hell?!

mark f
07-24-14, 09:02 PM
Sure, it's got lots of references to German politics, but mostly in passing. The real pleasure is seeing many of Fassbinder's acting troupe and crew playing themselves, as well as a spastic idiot playing the director (who looks like Fassbinder) and Stephen Hawking as the screenwriter. The actual director, Christoph Schlingensief, was a kamikaze filmmaker and a fervent follower of Fassbinder. I've seen five of his films so far.

I'm watching this movie right now. It's one of the slowest movies that I've ever seen, but it's definitely holding my interest. I don't know if this will make sense to anyone, but I desperately want to just fast forward to the end of the movie to see how it ends, but I can't because I don't want to miss even one second of this movie.

I just finished watching "Blow-Up", and I thought it was brilliant. Like you said, it wasn't what I thought it would be, but it's one of those movies that leaves you with more questions than answers.

I watched the movie "The Swimmer" last night, and I thought that was another brilliant movie for the same reason. It left me with more questions than answers.

IMO, these are the types of movies that you guys should be doing commentaries on because the discussion after the movie could potentially go on for days afterwards with many different theories about the movie.

Ah, glad you enjoyed it! The Swimmer is one of my personal favorites, by the way. ;)

I love Hitchcock movies, but I can appreciate other movies too. I've learned over the years that some of the best movies aren't what I expect them to be when I decide to watch them.

BTW, one of the main reasons that I decided to watch "The Swimmer" was because you were recommending it so highly. That was another movie that wasn't what I was expecting, but it turned out to be a fantastic movie.

I like Lord of the Rings. Fellowship of the Ring is tedious, if for no other reason than because I feel like I have seen the film more than fifty times. The second and third really bring it together for me. I love J.R.R's writing and scope with it. He spent more than ten years writing The Lord of the Rings, developed a whole language for it, and I have to respect that dedication.

The most hipster film ever! The director is so conceited he writes that he hopes he will be considered best ever along Griffith, Bunuel, Eisenstein and other cinema greats. A lot of strange things as well, but I'm just starting it. Will write more after I've finished it.

I rewatched parts of F for Fake last night, because talking about it in the '70s thread made me want to. Afterwards, I looked up who did the music for the film and I discovered the great Michel Legrand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Legrand)! I've been listening to his music all day. I also read a little bit about him and I found out that he made the music for this experimental and highly praised musical by Jacques Demy. The film has been on my watchlist for quite some time, but since I'm in the mood for some more Legrand music and since it's a '60s movie, I feel like this is the right moment to finally see it. Looking forward to it!

They've also got a Rocky Horror singalong and an outdoor 'sunset showing' of Close Encounters with the Third Kind :) How many of them I'll get too, I'm not sure, because it's a two hour train trip from uni and some of them are in the week, so it depends on my timetable really, but there is some that I desperately want to see on the big screen.

I know I need to, there's currently a retrospective of his going on in New York, which would I would totally go to if I lived there! (which I really should at some point) But alas, I'll have to find time for it on the small screen instead.

Enjoy! It's a little too uneven for me (especially in the third act), but it has plenty of great moments.

About right, I loved the first half, fantastic creepy atmosphere that you'd expect in a psycholigical thriller/horror, but it goes a bit downhill at the end. Good though.

Ohhh, Dolores Claiborne...that's one powerfully dark movie:eek:. A good film, just a bit hard for me to watch with the wife beating violence scenes.

Nightmare Alley, ya! one of my favorites. Tyrone Power was a much better actor, than just a matinee idol. Joan Blondell is always a treat in any film too. The story line reminds me of another great film, Elmer Gantry (1960).
