I actually quite liked it the first time I saw it. Didn't care for the end, for some reason, but other than that. I couldn't get through it the second time, but I've not tried since, so I'm not sure which side of the fence I fall.

URGH.

This is another movie I shut off after a half hour.

In fact, I owned it (since got rid of it).

I knew you hated it (you mentioned it in the '80s countdown thread while you were bashing Gilliam), but while watching the film, I couldn't figure out why. Is there a particular reason?

------------------------------------

I just rewatched Sin City with my sister (who saw it for the first time and loved it), but I also want to have a fresh film experience today, so I'm watching:

Trainspotting (1996)

X-Men - The first one, directed by Bryan Singer. I like this movie a lot, even with it's sometimes corny dialogue...("Do you know what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning?" LOL) Gearing up for seeing the new X-Men flick on Tuesday. Anna Paquin was adorable in this, BTW.

Holy cow! I finally decided to study for my tests and I haven't seen any movie in five days (seen a bunch of shorts, tho) and the last feature I saw was Hartley's The Unbelievable Truth. I decided to watch his films chronologically, so the next in line is Surviving Desire. It looks like one of the lesser appreciated ones, but it lasts only for an hour, so I don't lose anything even if I don't enjoy it, but it looks like the very worst case as I loved his two previous films.

X2: X-Men United - This one is awesome. A giant leap in quality, confidence, and action from the original, X2 borrows story elements from Chris Claremont's "God Loves, Man Kills" graphic novel, as well as hints towards "The Dark Phoenix Saga" (which we'd never really get), and Barry Windsor Smith's "Weapon X" miniseries (also poorly handled in future films, sadly)...My favorite scenes are the ones with Nightcrawler (a truly great performance by Alan Cumming, rendered unrecognizable by his blue makeup), and the savage fighting style of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Thumbs way way up.

I didn't expect the animation to be so breathtaking, it was really something special to look at. Other than that it was pretty good, but not really great. I enjoyed the comedy for the most part, but nothing was really laugh-out-loud funny. It has charm though. It's a fun movie, which is all I really ask for when it comes to American children's movies.

I was literally just about to post the same thing before Cricket beat me too it. Top stuff from the 70s, this year it's had a kind of revival with them restoring it to Blu-ray quality and giving it a bit of a 're-release', a lot of people seem to be enjoying it :)

I was kind of made aware through Mark Kermode, British film critic who is a big fan of William Friedkin and good friends with him too, they organised some screenings together I think and I remember him talking/tweeting about it. I think it's one of Tarantino's favourites too.

In my opinion:

1. Chinatown
2. Carnal Knowledge/Five Easy Pieces (it strongly depends on my mood)

4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
5. The King of Marvin Gardens

All great films, but I truly LOVE the first three.

Adding those two in the mix:

1. Chinatown
2. Carnal Knowledge/Five Easy Pieces (it strongly depends on my mood)
3. Carnal Knowledge/Five Easy Pieces
4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
5. The Last Detail
6. The Passenger (I feel like this one might rank higher after a rewatch)
7. The King of Marvin Gardens

They're all films I enjoyed, to be clear. I agree with Captain that The King of Marvin Gardens is probably the weakest of them all. The fact that it's still a good film says a lot about the other 6.

I could've guessed! It has that typical kind of mysterious atmosphere that some of your top ten favorite films have.

I also know the feeling of having to leave out certain films out of your top ten. Right now, I'm still considering to put a couple of films in it, but the problem is having to replace it with another that's already on it. It's like choosing between two children. :p

I need to rewatch this as I wasn't blown away by it the first time I saw it. Didn't like where the story went, but I loved Rockwell and Kevin Spacey. I definitely need a rewatch, especially since I was so hyped up for it back in the day.

I know this director is David Bowie's son, I wonder what his next project will be. Definitely has potential.
