Welcome to the Dollhouse-I found Solondz' film Happiness to be one of the darkest, yet most hilarious pieces of cinema I have ever seen. I want to see if this film will be able to balance the dark humor in an efficient way.

It's more intimate and therefore sometimes even more effectively dark than Happiness, in my opinion.

Enjoy!

the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. the sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. all war depends upon it

The less you know / have seen about the film, the better. It really is brilliantly hilarious because of how bad it is, words can not do it justice, it has to be seen.

A lot of people like it on this forum actually, and a lot of people prefer it to his other works. Godoggo, DonnieDarko and even Honeykid who dislikes all his newer stuff.

I think it's a great film, and I think that you might like it Mr Minio, it's style seems like something you might enjoy.

I posted before I saw your comment, mine was directed at Mark f. But while I have your attention, I don't think that A City of Sadness is a hardcore art film in the way you're thinking. It's certainly rigorous and very formalistic, but also contains a good deal of plot (which you say art films don't have much of usually, it's one of the reasons western audiences find it confusing), and was a big financial success in Taiwan.

I picked this up many months ago when my local Blockbuster closed down, but never watched it. After that, I think I'll see if American Hustle improves at all with a rewatch or if it'll be just as disappointing the second time around.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

http://rapidmoviez.com/data/images/movies/2013-07/cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs.jpg

Somehow I didn't know that this got a lot of praise from audiences and critics alike when it came out. I noticed it yesterday after I saw that The Lego Movie has a 100% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes right now, which is from the same makers. It made me curious and I decided to watch this one tonight as a starter.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. I love most animation of this type and I loved Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (the book) when I was a kid, but found this unfunny and disappointing.

For the record, I don't dislike American Hustle, it just wasn't anywhere near as good as I was expecting it to be. And, I hate to sound like Sexy, but I really hate all the praise it's received. I don't think it deserves it.

I did pre-order the DVD. This rewatch will determine whether or not I cancel that order. (I ran out of time last night and didn't get around to rewatching AH, so I'm doing it now).

Not a fan of Carax so far. Holy Motors was measly a 2.5 film to me, but I hope this one will be better. It's got Binoche, whose I adore.

If I have enough time I will see another gem... Vampire's Kiss! I never saw it, but I have seen some scenes and many gifs with Cage. I hope it's hilarious! Even heard it's similar to American Psycho, but I will have to check out if that's true.

Why didn't you like Holy Motors?

The whole thing didn't do much to me. It was offbeat and controversial for sure, but lacked something that would make me like it. Of course, Lavant's performance (performances?) was pretty good and cinematography was OK, but overall it felt really cold and non absorbing.

Appropriately, Vampire's Kiss sucks.

I won't say that it looks great, but it's the last movie in this Psycho Killer six-pack that I bought a long time ago. And for what it's worth, 2:13 was in that pack, and I liked it. Bleeding Rose, Descendant, and Mother's Boy were also in it, and they sucked, but whatever.

I'm thinking I may rewatch Adaptation as well.

I actually didn't like it the one time I saw it, but I'm wondering if I might like it now. I didn't much like Being John Malkovich on my initial viewing either, but obviously that's since changed. And of course I LOVED Her. I couldn't stand Where the Wild Things Are, though, so definitely no guarantee that I'll like it.
