Spent like 2 hours this evening either trying to decide what to watch or (unsuccessfully) find the thing I’d chosen on any of my endless movie subscriptions. Have finally settled on this.

I love Truffaut, but odd to see one of the greats do that thing everyone does nowadays where coffee is brought in, poured with much fanfare, and then left untouched by everyone until it’s time to carry the cups back to the kitchen. Instantly takes me out of the story. Fanny Ardant is striking here. That being said, the film does feel a little quaint.

Tonight I will finish Demon Pond. Hooray for ADHD! Anyway it's a stellar, weird movie. The imagery has been the best part, which is not to say the other parts are bad. The visuals are so cool. I have half an hour left.

I finished Demon Pond last night. It's such an awesome film. It's certainly weird and different, which is great because I love "weird" and "different" films.

The 2003 Assembly cut..

This installment gets shat on (unfairly, IMO) I know. But I like it even better than Aliens, which I thought really diluted the mystery, atmosphere and overall menace of the organism that was so beautifully established in Scott's '79 masterpiece.

I feel like Fincher's film brought some of that back.

Next up I have Thing from Another World. I saw it once many, many years ago and remember naught so I thought it'd be cool to revisit it. I'm not sure when I'll get to it. It's a library check out so it has to be soon. Hopefully I like it. I don't feel I can honestly critique it when I can't remember a thing about it.

Just this minute posted on the difficulty of finding where something is streaming. Disappearing into the ether I call it. Who knew so many dvds are for sale, but good luck finding a streamer.

Did you find it somewhere? British cinema classic.

PS Sad to see Julian Barnes.

I thought the same — so sad what happened to him. Watching this, it struck me I haven’t seen many films with him.

I found it on Apple TV in the end, but it hadn’t been available there until recently. On top of everything else, I apparently need to set reminders to occasionally check if any of the ‘hard-to-find’ films on my list have appeared on any of my gazillion streaming services. An efficient model this ain’t.

Such an incredible film and cast.

I think I only saw Julian in the Killing Fields.

I have Letterboxd to keep me informed about releases in my “profile”. My problem before this was the number of movies that the Times reviewed positively that didn’t make it to streaming at that time & which I instantly forgot existed. This used to drive me nuts.

Have lost count how many times I've seen this haunting sci-fi classic. Pierre Boulle's novel is excellent, but this is one of a handful of instances where the movie outdistances the book.

You know this is my favorite teen film. I went to high school with people like these characters.

Its a reason why i dont like Spader. Maybe its just Steph i dont like. He does play good bad guys in films (Less Than Zero and Manniquin).

Jon Cryer is an amazing comedic actor..

It is remarkably deep, as teen films go. Everyone goes on about Breakfast Club, but I much prefer this one.

I get that regarding Spader; if that had been the first time I saw him, I may have gotten the same impression. But I absolutely love many of his other films (especially Crash, The Secretary). Agree that he’s a great villain. I just really like his face, it has depth imo.

I mean, even as Steff his character is very realistic. I think he acts the way he does largely because he’s used to those spineless girls, and can’t handle a personality like Andie’s. So he’s resentful about her being a strong person while he isn’t. I don’t even think it’s about him liking her. Anyway, I liked everything about Pretty in Pink, it’s pretty perfect. Andie is a lot like my mum personality-wise.

I went to school with such people, too, but luckily (I guess?) I was always able to keep my distance. I was briefly part of the ‘gang’ through little action of my own, but even then I kept my distance. That was ‘informative’, as Loki says in Prisoners.

This is alright, though. Watchable.
Tilda tragically ****s up a German accent — she sounds entirely French. Quite convincingly French, I might add, but not at all German. Why would anyone do this? It’s like the usual debacle with Alec Baldwin & Co speaking Russian. Why not hire Vicky Krieps to sound German? Tilda adds nothing to this film. Just baffling.

Well, I hated this. Haven’t hated anything this much since The Substance. It’s strange, in a way, because I love Parasite, Okja and Memories of Murder and quite like most of his other films, apart from Snowpiercer. I started Goldeneye tonight. It's okay. Some of it is really dumb, like Bond driving his motorcycle off a cliff and catching up to a falling plane and flying off with it. Or how they narrowly missed cyclists when he and some chick were driving really fast and then they were really slow. And somehow they flew a helicopter from France to Northern Russia on one tank of fuel. And people weren't suspicious big-hat-big-nose didn't know someone else didn't die. This movie really asks a lot of me.

Sums up the problem with older Bond films. They were intended to be much spoofier/more comedic back then, to be fair. But though I was brought up on them, that also really takes me out of the moment now.

It's really goofy. Sometimes that works. This time it really didn't.

I thought I'd share because it stuck with me; I was in a public place at a college campus and the TV was on at the time, and Goldeneye started on whatever channel was on then, and one person said, "This movie is great because the game is awesome." I'm not sure one begets the other though I didn't argue because he likes both and who am I to disparage liking two related things? It just struck me as kind of odd.

I tried to resume it this afternoon but with the kiddos coming in and out of the house I decided to wait. I'm not worried about the content being too much for them vis it seems fairly mild, apart from some sensual stuff hither and thither. It's just with them popping in and out of the house it is rather noisy. I can't really tell them to quit though because it's pertaining to the fun they're having outside and I'd rather not impede that.

The Bond movies with Sean Connery felt hindered by their time and technology and understanding of new technology of the time. I also always thought the villains were stupid and the plots farfetched. I've seen Casino Royale with Daniel Craig and liked it okay, and the one with Christopher Walken as the villain, and that one isn't very good, apart from Mr Walken. I'm just not a Bond fan. Honestly the biggest reason I'm watching Goldeneye is for the Hall thingy happening here. I'm also watching it because I wanted to see how it compares to the N64 game. So far I prefer the game.

Personally I think that's the problem with the new Bond films. They don't get that it's supposed to be a light/fun/sometimes-silly spy thriller, not an action epic. Starting with Pierce Brosnan, it stopped being Bond and became Jason Bourne. Not that the new Bond movies are bad...they're just not Bond anymore to me. I feel Goldeneye was maybe the last time they tried to truly stick to the Bond formula and after that they just became yet-another-action-series.

I can handle "light/fun/sometimes-silly spy thrillers". Goldeneye just has way too much outlandish material for me to enjoy it. Jackie Chan has goofball films where he's in espionage and weird situations and does "light/fun/sometimes-silly" things and it's fine because it's somewhat believable. This, though, stretched that way too far.

When the guy fell 100 feet and survived and was barely visibly hurt, it annoyed me so much. He would have died the instant he hit the ground.

When the Savanayroa whatever place exploded and the chick survived, that irked me too because a huge explosion happened RIGHT NEXT TO HER and she survived without injury. If anything her eardrums would have burst and her ears would be bleeding. Does that happen? Nope; not a scratch on her.

I could watch Batman and Harley Quinn. It's the next one for me to watch in the Batman 18-Film Collection what I have again from the library. I made a list of the films on IMDb so I'm keeping track of my progress with that.

I do need to watch the two Hall of Fame movies I have available, as well. Past Lives has two renewals so I'm good there, for now, while Batman has zero, so I need to get on those, I have eight left. At Play... I have for another three weeks, so maybe I can get the gumption to watch it tomorrow or Friday or some combination of the two. Vis it's an Apple TV rental, I'll only have 48 hours to watch it once I start it so I need to be careful. Hm I could start At Play et cetera tonight and finish it tomorrow. It's a three-hour movie so I have to be sure to give myself the time to watch it.

It wasn’t that. If I hated something, I’d stop too. If I stopped because I’m tired/unwell/working, which happened this week, then I’m a bit of a completionist and try to see things through to the end. Otherwise I can’t even discuss a film/show if I didn’t finish it. (Not saying that should be everyone’s approach, but that’s what I do).

But yeah, of course I’d like to find more films where I drop what I’m doing and watch mesmerised while my dinner burns. But these are few and far between.

This week, I haven’t really been able to watch much in peace. I started Disclaimer with Cate Blanchett, but hated it so much that I stopped.

Black Bag - Sort of a throwback to the 1960's, British agent Katherine St Jean (Cate Blanchett) is married to George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbinder).

"When intelligence agent Kathryn St. Jean is suspected of committing treason, her husband, intelligence agent George Woodhouse, is assigned to investigate her. He faces the ultimate test – faithfulness to his marriage or loyalty to his country." - Wikipedia

It's pretty good, reminds me of the style of British spy flicks in that whole James Bond, Man From Uncle genre.

A lot of the dialog (there's a lot of it) went right past me, being fast and British, but I caught most of it. I'd like to see it again at some point. It's quite enjoyable to me. I went in not expecting much in the way of insight into the intelligence community, just wanting a couple hours of entertainment and witty banter. I got that. Fassbender, in his big dark-framed eyeglasses channels Michael Caine and Pierce Brosnan looks appropriately dignified. Cate Blanchett has a lot of good sharp banter.

It's compact, fast-moving and witty.

I wasn't that big on this one. Tracy is great but everything around her is a bit of a dud, including the tone, Broderick's dumb character, and Chris Klein's bad acting. It’s in my Q, but haven’t gotten to it yet. There’s so much stuff to watch, isn’t there & not a huge amount of time?

Absolutely. Yesterday I went through my film list to the very end for the first time in years, and some stuff has lingered there for fifteen years, still unseen. Ah well. We do our best here.

This film is spectacular.

I’m fascinated by how differently people perceive these things. My mother’s reaction to I’m Still Here can be summed up as, ‘So what? This is just like the USSR.’ Then she added, ‘So it’s effectively a documentary. Right.’ I do think she appreciated it, but this is a very different reaction to someone watching this without comparing it to the USSR or thinking, Nothing overly shocking here, nothing to see here.

My best friend has family both in Argentina and Brazil, and she knows and talks a lot about this history. I told her when I first watched this on the big screen that I found the tone and message to be overall optimistic/uplifting, which is rare with this subject matter, and she understood, though many people wouldn’t have.

Wow...can you miss this one, The Assessment -

"In a not-so-distant future where parenthood is strictly controlled, a couple's mysterious seven-day assessment for the right to have a child unravels into a nightmare, forcing them to question the very foundations of society."

Yeah, it's an awful scenario, but it's also so implausible of a scenario that, as a plot line, that I just lost interest.

Phenomenal film. A masterpiece. Thank God I had Chromecast for this. Hilarious in some ways and just brilliant.
The ‘jactitation’ bit is great, but ‘Sit down, Samson, you're about to get a haircut’ is ****ing spectacular.
I miss working in legal.

My father actually got really angry at me when I accidentally showed him this movie. He went on a whole rant about how they don’t make proper, wholesome stuff anymore, heh. He loves horror and thrillers as much as the next guy, and yet The Loved Ones just didn’t do it for him.

I'm watching I Confess tonight. I paused it for a bit because I've been expecting an email and got one so I wanted to see if it was it. It wasn't. In case there's confusion, I'm watching the 1953 Alfred Hitchcock film with Montgomery Clift as a priest and a murder. I'm 30 minutes into it. So far it's meeting my expectations, which is to say I'm intrigued and want to see how it plays out because it's awesome.

I also have Past Lives from the library and Persona downloaded on my lappy. People's Joker should be at the library too. I also have Batman and Harley Quinn to watch at some point. I won't watch anymore tonight because I'm dead tired, unless I wake up some. Then I'll attempt Batman. I usually rock at subtitles. I can't when I'm this tired.

Loving the ‘never’ in this sentence. If I can’t finish something, which is rare, I usually give up after 2-3 tries.

I told Citizen Rules I'd catch up for the Hall of Fame, so I'm working on it. I have seven to go and I'll try to knock down one more tonight; People's Joker. That'll be the halfway point; six of twelve in contention, and it'll hit 13 or 14 if us two forgetful sirs finish in time, and I've seen those two, so no worries there.
