Given my very complicated relationship with yoga, this seems apt.

Don’t know who thought of that intro. Waaay too long, and the idea that someone with no balance would try to be a yoga teacher is laughable (well, yes, people do it, but really). Then again, she is somewhat believable. All that condescending fakery.

Maybe tonight I'll watch Aliens. Yeah that sounds like a good plan. I need a video game breather so that sounds like a good breath of fresh medium. I'll forget it's James Cameron.

Crap; I have migraine vision. If I can get over it without the cognitive disconnects I can watch it. If not it'll wait until tomorrow. I'm already have thinking troubles.

Yeah my brain wasn't working very well yesterday either. I had a migraine hangover and the appointment wore me out, and then D&D wiped me out. I'm going to try today after the kiddos are in bed. It is probably evident I had some cognitive issues the other day when I typed "I'm already have thinking troubles". Migraines are a nightmare.

I think i'm happy about joining again The Criterion Channel, with choosing Demonlover from 2002 as the inaugural watch, it's agreeable to my tinnitus, usually sophisticated films from the early 00's were like this with a ambient like soundtrack that allows a deeper immersion into what's being shown, which is all natural, normal regular people as seen with a precise and sharp point of view.

Nothing would make me watch a dubbed movie.

Yeah, I remember we discussed that. I was brought up on them so think to me it’s natural. I do watch plenty of films with subtitles and don’t have anything against them, I don’t dislike them, they don’t annoy me (well, apart from the bright yellow ones in The Brutalist, but that’s a bit of an aberration), but I enjoy linguistics and love to see how talented voice actors translate different jokes into different languages given it can’t be verbatim, that’s a huge part of the appeal for me.

There are plenty of films I love but find the dubbed versions funnier/the voices better. Many films for me pretty much feel like two different films depending what language they’re in.

More importantly for me, subtitles are rudimentary/strictly functional, quite often there isn’t enough time or space on the screen to translate all the detail in the original spoken phrase, and I hate that. I feel it massively takes away from meaning. It’s just what you’re used to, I think.

Interesting viewpoint. I think you’re right, but I’m not bothered at all by subtitles. Loads Lost in Translation, but hearing the movie in its intended language is what I want. Bergman in Swedish, et al.

We have talked about this before & I mentioned one pseudo documentary about Mongolian families. First time I saw it was in its original language. Wanting to see it a second time found out it was now dubbed into American English. Crazy.

Since it's about 45 minutes shorter than Aliens and I have to be up early tomorrow, I'll watch Die! Die! My Darling! (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059106/?ref_=wl_t_21) tonight. The ads would add an extra fifteen minutes or so so it'll be a half hour difference, which is worth it. I will watch Aliens tomorrow after the appointment.

I thought about watching Batman Killing Joke at some point today. It's in the 18-film collection so it sounds like a good idea. I kind of tapered off my momentum with the Batman movies after watching nine of them. Most of them were pretty good though. I have to return it to the library soon, so I'll rerequest it once it's back.

I was thinking of watching an Italian horror film; either Bird with the Crystal Plumage or Cat O' Nine Tails. Oddly enough today would have been George Romero's 84th birthday if he were still alive, so watching horror just seems right. I know those are Argento. I found some Romero on Tubi.

I have never seen this movie though I know it has cult worship here.

It’s very ‘80s, very Breakfast Club, but I’d hardly call it a ‘cult film’, especially here of all places. I wanted to watch something sort of upward-looking, and this definitely fit the bill. I really miss such films, no one can make them anymore, and even back in the day they were few and far between. It’s so perfectly well-rounded and positive, and the teenage characters are sort of aspirational, if that’s the word.

My mum and I watched The Leftovers together a while back (I’d seen the show before, she hadn’t), and she absolutely hated the teenagers there. Couldn’t watch the teenager-led scenes. I reminded her that she loves Twin Peaks, and that features teenagers just as heavily. She said she dislikes those scenes, too, but the teenagers in the ‘80s/‘90s shows/films were far more mature and likeable. This is absolutely what comes to mind after watching Ferris Bueller… — everyone behaves in really emotionally mature ways, yes, I did just say that. The dialogue has emotional depth.

I remember you’re not interested in TP, but it just came to mind.

It'll be easier to find time tonight than it was last night, although I am unsure if the kiddos have school tomorrow or not vis snow. My guess is not as they haven't had school all week and the snow is still coming down. We'll see.

Strange film. I really like the opening section. Overall, pretty impressive.

‘A former American’ is a strange phrase, though. I am very confused. They keep saying ‘A former American and Israeli citizen’, but I haven’t found any information that David Berger gave up his US citizenship.

In fact, this officially lists him as ‘American’:
https://www.nps.gov/people/david-berger.htm

This is bizarre. A horrifying films and given the, ahem, political context nowadays, this feels even more surreal. Hits especially close to home as I work in a news business-adjacent job.

Never seen Baywatch, so Pamela’s voice seemed a bit disorienting. So high and childish.
As expected, this isn’t my type of film, but it’s well-made. Gotta give it to Pamela, she’s a hell of an actress when she wants to be. As someone who knows many professional pole dancers and does pole fitness semi-professionally, it’s an interesting subject. I think it’s almost limiting that it only explores women making choices others don’t understand/giving their life up for an ‘inappropriate’/‘shallow’ sex-adjacent form of art, rather than art more broadly. If the protagonist was more of a rockstar, like Julianne Moore in What Maisie Knew, she’d be far less judged and the narrative wouldn’t hold.
But yes, this is a much, much better film than I expected. Some bits of it are heartbreaking. Yeah, that’s kind of how I’d describe the whole thing: it’s heartbreaking and depressing, which I suppose is the point, but I’m so tired of it. I’m so tired of this depressing ****ing negativity which we call ‘nostalgia’/profoundness/whatever it might be.
I do see the appeal of really, really acrobatic pole dancing-type dance, so I guess it’s even more depressing that technique-wise, I’m not on Shelley’s side. Having seen tgat insanely acrobatic ballet-like erotic dance/extreme gymnastics that is en vogue nowadays first-hand, it’s really hard to feel appreciation for the ‘soft’ kind. But then J-Lo did some alright pole in Hustlers, so I guess it depends on the person/the dancer. The latter had a very positive take though on a woman exactly the same age as Pam being phenomenal at erotic dance, and I guess I prefer that way of approaching the topic. Age- and flexibility-wise, I think with Hustlers in mind, Shelley could have done the sexy acrobatics that the market requires if she wanted to, but she doesn’t want to. Which is valid, but the film’s hellbent determination to show that this isn’t option seems odd.
Finally, I didn’t recognise Jamie Lee Curtis. This isn’t a figure of speech; I wasn’t aware until the credits that she was in it.

Dying to see this. Never did I think I’d live to see Soderbergh make a ‘proper’ horror film. I’m feeling better today, so looking forward to this on the big screen.
https://resizing.flixster.com/CY5tFqNlNhJJ3f126TgA9OOwchk=/ems.cHJkLWVtcy1hc3NldHMvbW92aWVzLzllNjlhNTUzLWQ0YjAtNGVhYy1hYzgzLTEwZjI3NzU1OGYyMC5qcGc=
In an utterly empty cinema, too. Lucky me. This happens a lot, but still crazy. I’m glad things are still being screened, though I do wonder if any cinemas apart from Everyman at £25 per ticket will still be around in 10 years.
Oh my God, the Harrison Ford ‘Don’t Make Him Angry’ ad is brilliant and hilarious. I must show it to my father.
As expected, I really enjoyed this. Many aspects of it. I understand the message about promiscuous youth (even if it’s less true nowadays, heh, as it were), but the fact the sister ****s this random guy within twenty minutes of knowing him is just bizarre and tragic. She doesn’t even get to take a look at any of her brother’s other friends, doesn’t even consider her options. I guess this is ‘normal’ nowadays and Soderbergh’s point is also that it’s normal (and of course he does show the guy isn’t to be trusted, but he doesn’t even make Chloe reluctant, like she’s got no standards or preferences or analytical skills whatsoever, dear Lord — which, again, I suppose it’s because of her PTSD/depression), but wtf.
Soderbergh does love his long takes and strange camera angles. They’re somewhat migraine-inducing but they do work here.
I love the dad. He is cool. That being said, I don’t know if anyone is meant to like/relate to Lucy Lui’s character and the son, but as always, I do. I genuinely feel sad for the family members who just want to live, have fun, spend money, enjoy themselves, but are forced to babysit someone ‘vulnerable’/messed-up/depressed. I’ve been there, and I really isn’t fair at all. Anyway, the bit about present, past and future being one is also awesome — my favourite people Moorhead and Benson love that concept.

This seems a bit ridiculous so far, but okay. To be fair, I never did get slashers, less so, jokey ones. I like X and some oldie classics, but that’s about it. It would have been great if this abandoned all comedic ambitions and explored the idea that the advertising industry invented the modern concept of romantic love.
Well, I do recognise a London ad agency. The boss is spot-on, all the way down to the accent. Hi there, Charlotte, long time, no see!
Nah, this sucks. All this asinine internet-speak and linguistic abominations (however, it feels like this was meant to be set in the U.K., hence the Britishisms like ‘babes’ — but then why the American flag?! The setting seemed very confused). I hated the comic elements, naturally. The guy is very annoying, he should get skinned asap and have his liver eaten with some Fava beans and a nice Chianti.
I absolutely hate Jay, but the film has its moments.
Stunned that the director is a man.
The detective woman is super-hot.

Hello movie loving gang, i'm just sharing the link to my Letterboxd list where i'm going through my film collection a little bit at a time, this is i know the wrong way to experience films, but it's become for me a part of everything else i consume, a little bit at a time, from a wide array, giving an almost immediate feel of more films one could experience if they were all watched from beginning to end one at a time. I keep track of where i left off and will slowly progress, however due to the number of films eventually in the mix more content will be enjoyed, deceptively, like gazing for long periods of time at a desert and seeing things appear, hallucinating, tripping out, ahh yes, and all with dad right beside me, when i do a risque film part, i gently adivse him to not pay too much attention and urge him to have some shut eye, this is how i can fit in film into the whole, the whole being all of my interests.

Films we'll be continuing tonight:

The Sun in a Net -- a beguiling Czech film from 1962, i feel that my best experience with it is still to come, there are many like this.

The Other Side of Hope -- late Kaurismaki about topical things like refugees, good sober stuff, but not too emotionally taxing, leave that for some below.

Tales from the Gimli Hospital -- i genuinely adore this quirky lil oddity, the music and bizarre goings on.

Casino Royale -- dad loves these kinds of action flicks

Distant Voices, Still Lives -- Terence Davies masterpiece here has what it takes to help one see things in a more well rounded way, with much singing through the heartache of poor parenting, and war, memories both sad and elegiac.

Gone with the Wind -- trusty old classic, i love it, but the only person online i spoke about it with called it a snoozefest, what??!! This is filled with quotoable quotes and high drama, epic in a wholesome way.

Unforgiven -- Clint Eastwood's western was made in our province here in Canada, my chiropractor knew one of the extras.

Unbreakable i feel that it might be nice for someone hurting to be watching a movie about someone who can't be hurt.

This film absolutely doesn’t work for me, mainly because I feel that Meryl Streep, even with exaggerated wrinkles (the hand looks ridiculous), just looks immeasurably better than Goldie Hawn, and has that inimitable presence Hawn lacks. My dad took me to the theater to see this cult sci-fi classic when it opened in '79. 11 y.o. me was blown away. After countless rewatches, it's lost none of its charm. Visually breathtaking, with Oscar nominations for Cinematography and Visual Effects.

And hey, ya got Slim Pickens and Roddy McDowall voicing cartoony, trashcan robots, with Anthony Perkins, Ernest Borgnine and the legendary Maximillian Schell rounding out a solid cast.

Other than that, this was fantastic, too. Heston does have a remarkable presence. The biblical scholar in me is thrilled.
The moment where the old woman’s dress gets trapped under a rock is more horrifying than any horror film I’ve seen. I guess it’s something to do with the genre shift/unexpected nature of that moment. Made me think of all those tube accidents, so I guess my brain perceived it as more ‘real’ than most typical horror.

Since I can't sleep I thought I'd relax with Good Bad Weird but all it did was keep my blood flowing with excitement at my favorite movie when I need to sleep so I'll resume it after I wake up in the later morning. I am seriously running out of insomnia beaters.

Ben Kinsley is a great actor but doesn't get the credit.

Tom Payne, the main actor, went on to a starring role in a tv series here The Prodigal Son

He has to pretend to be a Persian to learn medicine. They do not teach outside their culture.

Sorry about your headache.

I think Kingsley is quite admired, Sexy Beast and all, wouldn’t think of him as underrated.

The film sounds really good.

I loved Ferrell in Everything Must Go (2010), even moreso because Raymond Carver is one of my favorite authors. This looks to be a similarly atypical part for him (Ferrell). He deserves more credit for his more serious roles!

Didn't Ferrell bring his comedy stylings to the role, at least to an extent? I don't mean like he made it an outright comedy but that he had some comedic tendencies and nuances in his performance. I like it when comedy actors tackle serious roles. I think it's the change of pace and freshness of the newfangled style of role. Have you seen Stranger Than Fiction prior to this viewing?

Which role? Everything Must Go?

I thought he played both movies very straight, honestly.

First time watching Stranger Than Fiction. Enjoyed it very much! Emma Thompson (my celebrity crush lol), Queen Latifah and Dustin Hoffman all were great foils to Ferrell's Everyman.

I meant Stranger Than Fiction mostly but either one is a good subject for the question.

He did? Well that's cool. I'm glad you liked the movie. It's cool to see comedians take on serious roles, and then succeed at them. I like it when people play against type.

I started Demon Pond and then got pulled away from it before I could get anywhere and haven't made it back to the film. The imagery is cool and so far I'm six minutes into it with zero words spoken, which I always keep track nowadays.

I thought the performances (especially Brody's) were excellent, with one exception, and I thought it was visually stunning, but as far as the film as a whole, I was a little underwhelmed.

It definitely has its strong points, and even at 3.5 hours+, it moved along and kept me more or less engaged. But in the end, it fell flat for me

This is a gothic horror film from the 1940s. Vincent is as amazing, creepy and handsome as always.

Have you seen The Uninvited from the 40s?
