Loved Françoise Dorleac and her makeup. She’s got a very Sharon Tate look, though obviously it’s just a sixties look, Twiggy and all. Didn’t care very much for the film overall, but I do relate to the wife wanting the husband to have some balls for once. Ah well.

Did you know that Françoise Dorleac (who, IIRC, died in a car crash) was Catherine Deneuve’s sister?

I had no idea, but that makes so much sense. I kept staring at her trying to figure out who she reminded me of (but thinking it was Sharon Tate).

The biggest reason I'm curious about it is because the director is quite literally, in all respects, an all-time favorite pop culture character of mine.

By the way, I think I know what meega nala qweesta means. PM me if you wanna find out because I dare not say it on the forums. Heh heh. But yes, I love Stitch so much that I've been trying to emulate him by making a creature of my own tweaks and spins, but Stitch's concept as a character is so utterly perfect to me that the whole process is difficult.

Anyway, I'm watching Faust (1926) today. 20 minutes in and I'm loving it.

I've already got a couple movies I wanna see in theaters, and I don't feel that I'll be further enlightened by seeing this one on the big screen. But I'll definitely check it out once it's one streaming, if not just for Chris Sanders.

Initially planned to watch Megalopolis, but it was only showing a few miles away from my house. Had a migraine, couldn’t be arsed to leave my neighbourhood, so rather reluctantly went to watch this instead (nothing much that’s showing now excites me, so whatever). I do love the original.

Gotta say, this is pretty good. The random homoerotic vibes and the excellent soundtrack. It’s funny, I read a very negative review of this and a very positive one, and as is often the case with me, I do kind of see both sides. Not even sure where I come down, but it’s very watchable. Still, it isn’t making a point compared to the original.
The screaming thing is becoming popular. The Teachers’ Lounge had the same thing. I do respect this Louise much more for protecting Ant. She has guts.
The soundtrack is, again, positively spectacular.

High Noon. It's an excellent example of what fear can do to a town. Nice and brisk, got some good characterizations throughout, doesn't rely on the villain's development much like Seven Samurai didn't, although I think it did need one since this movie wasn't teaming with lead characters the way Seven Samurai was.

Nope, I haven’t seen either of these even though late eighties is one of my favourite time periods for films. Will try to catch up asap. I’m at a work conference this week abroad and while I’m okay so far, no breakdown and social battery not fully depleted, it’s still tough and I don’t know if I’ll get to really watch anything… and if I do, I want to watch horror this week to disconnect from the arse-kissing.

Tonight, it's one of the coolest-ever sci-fi-space movies, the 1950's The Forbidden Planet. A terrestrial space ship, capable of light speed visits a distant planet where something very bad happened to some previous colonists....destroyed by monsters that seemed to materialize from nowhere. The planet also contains an unimaginable internal mechanism that supplies unbelievable amounts of power, but to WHAT? Then, an an invisible monster begins to kill the crew. What is it? Why?

The animated FX were amazing for the 1950's and the electronic musical soundtrack combines with environmental sounds, a truly amazing soundtrack. It's one of those movies I have to pull off the shelf now and again. The "Great Machine" follows. You should put on your big muffy headphones and turn up the sound. The electronic music is remarkable.

And, the "Id Monster" (the plot in the later part of the movie will explain what an Id Monster is...it's Freudian), about 3 minutes in. Again, you need good sound to appreciate it. The roars of the monster and screams of the crew are really palpable.

This is not bad. A very solid premise. Having been exactly that female manager, I feel this one. Good soundtrack. Strange way of doing dialogue, though, as someone who swears a bit too much (far too much at times), even I think the protagonist overswears, as it were, and in this case it really messes with suspension of disbelief. After all, she’s in a service job, pure customer service, she can’t get away with ‘****’ in every line.
This is a very strange film. I think it’s good, but the message, as it were, is perplexing. So it appears that the message is the female protagonist shouldn’t have enforced her boundaries, shouldn’t have forced oversexed pigs to respect her, shouldn’t have fired a rude and generally awful employee. I’m no feminist the way the word is used nowadays, but this seems very strange.

This is not bad. I’m very interested in stepparent dynamics so every new take is worthwhile.
Yet another film assuming women owe everyone everything and their feelings don’t matter.

The Predator - Shane Black makes the first "comedy" in the franchise. It doesn't work for me. It feels like a Marvel movie with R-rated violence. It perhaps could have worked as an original story better.

Gettin' toward Halloween, have to pull out some favorite movies. Tonight, it's The Thing, the 1982 version, directed by John Carpenter. It's not the classic 1951 black and white version, or the so-so 2011 remake, but Carpenter's, one of his best. It's the peak of wax-melt FX, a good ensemble cast including Kurt Russel, excellent, minimalist, ominous music by Ennio Morricone and a frigid, menacing sense of being alone in the ice with a shape shifting monster on the loose. It's John Carpenter doing what he does best.

Looking forward to this, especially Maria Bakalova. I’m so glad that they picked an actual Eastern European for this. Read her interview, the whole ‘Slavic women are strong’ spiel, and that was hilarious (and true), and she feels like a great fit.

Speaking of Prima Facie, have you ever attended a showing that offered closed captions? I have only watched it once, and the theater where I went to see it didn't have any closed captioning available for this title.

I probably understood close to 88% of all the dialogue, just wish I could have understood every single line.

No, I’ve never come across that for this play. I had this exact conversation with my mother who I took to see it on my second viewing just over a month ago (on my birthday, actually). She did also wish there were closed captions.

My instinct is that with how fast Comer speaks, the text would be changing too rapidly for the audience to really get all the way through it, but that’s no reason not to offer an abridged version.

Hopefully as it continues to be popular (given that two years in, it’s pretty clear it endures and continues to garner praise), someone will think of this. But then a part of me also thinks it would ever so slightly distract one from watching her face, which would be a shame.

On a separate note, tonight on my third viewing I had a completely new thought pop into my head (not so much a new take, but I thought it somewhat inadvertently puts forward a neat argument in favour of vigilantism, because that at least guarantees the woman revenge, as it were, while sparing her any further humiliation. Of course only a seriously messed up person like me would think that, but I did genuinely think that and that’s kind of where I’m at mentally atm.)

Irrespective of that, I love the dark humour permeating the entire narrative. It’s all so ****ing awful it really is rather funny, after all.

If I don't get to it tonight vis I have a nightly Tuesday activity except then I'm up for a while after it, I plan to watch Outlaw Josey Wales in the next day or two. I watched it like fifteen or twenty years ago or so, I fail to recall exactly vis it's been so long, so I requested it from the library. I thought it'd be nice to give it another go. I remember liking it except I remember little about it so I want to rewatch it.

And soon I'll give Tootsie and the original Wicker Man watches as they're coming from the library as well. They shipped today. Oh and I found Sir Christopher Lee's one crack at Sherlock Holmes on Amazon's free video service so I want to watch that soon too. Yeah I'm getting back into watching movies after I lost my Facebook account.

I recently watched that and loved Christopher Lee in Sherlock Holmes.

Watched which one? Outlaw Josey Wales? I caught it on TCM so long ago when I first started getting into Westerns and found it a good movie although I didn't quite understand it. I know more about the genre now so I feel I can appreciate it more now and should get more out of it with a rewatch. We'll see. I also remember nothing about it.

Yeah Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace. The blurb on Amazon says that Lee loved playing Holmes, and yet Deadly Necklace is the only time he did. I tried to watch it yesterday but Amazon had an issue and wouldn't play it so I watched Kangaroo on Tubi instead.

Am I allowed to post about TV shows in this thread? I was thinking about watching an episode of Joker Game, an anime set right before World War II, since I've almost finished it. Well it's not long, only twelve episodes, so I need to get on that. It rocks.

Tell me if you figure out wtf that is at the end

I think the ‘foetuses’ at the end are a physical manifestation of Mia’s generational trauma. Nothing too unusual about that, though it is a bit of a weird tonal shift. It made me think of the mud monster in Spirited Away, of all things.

But anyway, I should probably be worried by how much I liked this movie. I found it really well-made and deep. All hail the Danes, as ever.

Which one? Wicker Man? I watched it tonight. It has some explicit content and some tense scenes, although yeah it isn't overly disturbing. Actually it felt mundane. I don't mean bad of course. Far from bad. I thought Wicker Man was awesome. Apart from some shots of clothesless people and someone being burned alive there really isn't much in the way of graphic content. So there is graphic content. It's just confined to a couple bits. I do appreciate the insight as well. I suppose the costumes could be considered creepy. My perception is different from a youngster's.

After watching Wicker Man I can't imagine Clockwise isn't more extreme in its content. John Cleese did write it, after all. I guess the ratings fooled me.

101796
It's a Korean historical drama so I expect to like it vis I love Korean cinema and historical cinema. We'll see how it goes.

I might watch Immaculate instead, or as well.
101798
It's available on a streaming site through the local library. I might like it because I like horror and religious movies and Sydney Sweeney.

Addendum; I fell asleep before I could watch anything. After football I'll try to get to Immaculate.

Cool, I think the Criterion sale is going on at B&N, I have a hankering to pick it up now.

And yeah, I'm not a big horror person (I like the old style eerie, ghostly stuff, not big on the slasher, gory) but I saw the first two, so I want to finish up with it. I thought X and Pearl were fine - I gave each 3 out of 5-stars, which is not stellar but a passing grade for me. So, if it can manage that I'll be happy.

Same here re the book. It is disturbing though. I quite like it and I do really enjoy such stories to this day. The Wilds and the like. Need to catch up on both adaptations one of these days, though sometimes such stuff leaves me a bit disappointed. It sounds strange, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen children’s cruelty depicted well enough (accurately enough?) on screen. No matter what a director does, I feel like the real thing is more vicious than that, like it’s a failure of imagination.

So do I. ‘Troubled teen’ is such a broad category though. I watched a British film called Hoard a few months ago and that really stayed with me. It was a drama, no violence, little tension, little interaction between different teens, even, but wow did this stay with me.
