As a proud normie, I’ve never even seen it which I probably must rectify. It just has that ‘women’s cinema’ vibe.
I know what you mean, but don't worry, it's not that. The title doesn't really convey much about it. It has a lot of wit and energy and it's among my very favorite films.

Oh right! I shall check it out then. I read up on it this morning and was shocked to learn it was Robyn Wright’s breakthrough role. It just seems like a very counter-intuitive title for anything but a romance movie. But hey, I overthink things. Duly added to watchlist.

Even so-called ‘women’s cinema’ works for me on occasion.

Huzzah. It's slightly irrational how happy it makes me that you loved it.

It would've been fine if you didn't, but...yeah, I adore that film.

There is no movie that someone would have to like for us to get along, or for me to respect them (as a person or a moviegoer or anything else)...BUT if I were forced to reduce someone to such a litmus test, if I were forced to pick a single film and use someone's reaction to it to gauge our compatibility as friends or anything like that...it would be The Princess Bride, and I'm having trouble thinking of what would even be second.

What an odd, off-putting and somehow disrespectful film. ****ing hell. If there’s anything I’d venture to call ‘offensive’, it would be something like this. Not my day movie-wise. Absolutely abhor the concept on philosophical grounds, as it were. Typical Eastern European disrespect for personal property, liberty and all else.
**** it. Gave up on it.

What with the season and the upcoming release of a Twister sequel, I have to pull this one off the DVD pile.....Twister, the 1996 one, in which a spirited, energized gang of weather geeks chase tornadoes across the great plains of the American mid-west in pickups, falling in love, witnessing disaster and driving much too fast to a hard rock soundtrack. In case you didn't know, there are good-guy chasers and bad-guy chasers. The movie explains all of that. This one is going to be hard to beat in that sort of disaster-weather-romance-male rivalry genre. Philip Seymour Hoffman was a supporting character, shortly before he became famous.

I've been much too close to a couple of tornadoes (like 50 feet) and never wanted to repeat THAT, even with a pickup and a crew, so the movie is just right for me.

Yes, I saw you single out the 38/100 from RT and conveniently left out the 3/5 from LB and the 71/100 from both imdb and tmdb. But I have to admit the divisiveness of reactions and runtime make me a bit hesitant to actually press play tonight.

No, it has nothing to do with cherry-picking. I always look at RT scores almost exclusively just to get a feel for what to expect. I sometimes disagree quite heartily with those scores, but it is always a good idea to know where things have landed with critics - not because I think they are always right, but because I tend to know what their reactions really mean.

Such a unique film. Glad I found it in French on some random website. Really liked Marie, too. She rocks. There’s some vibe/atmosphere to it that’s just great, reminds me of the best sort of voodoo movies, Eve’s Bayou and the like. Also really liked the fact the violence in the end/last three quarters was off-screen. I’ve seen Babetida Sadjo elsewhere and she’s remarkable, a remarkable face and presence. Found the scenes with the bar tender so insanely sexy, so help me god. One of the sexiest things I’ve seen in ages! And the ending exactly the kind of thing I always complain doesn’t happen nearly enough.

Avoiding Convention TV. Watching Night of the Demon, the longer version of the British Curse of the Demon, an essential old horror movie about skepticism and actual curses, runes, magicians, magic parchments and demons. It's taken from a book, Casting the Runes. It's good, in an old school, suspenseful way, nice monochrome cinematography, and good, understated acting. Night of the Demon is slightly more graphic than the version intended for the US, Curse of the Demon. Not bad at all, full of strange characters, trench coats, whistling wind, lightning and thunder. Everybody except Dana Andrews has a British accent. You don't see it very much, but it really has a great demon.

Going back on the many things I remember about Minority Report, I realized something: there isn't a single thing about that movie I didn't like. And now that I'm much better of an analyst, I remember how balanced everything was. I put it in my top 90, giving Spielberg three perfect films.

Work just doesn’t end today. Trying to disconnect.
The first 30 mins of this were very memorable. The mother is… I’m incredibly protective of children, so I’m not being objective here (the prequels thread comes to mind), but this woman deserves to go to jail.
Then again, British teachers are such ****s. Every adult in the first 30 mins of this movie deserves to go to jail.
The psychology of hoarding is explored pretty well here, though. Thought-provoking for sure.
This has really grown on me over the last few days. Such an odd film, but in the end, I really liked it, it has remarkably sexy moments and communicates that feeling of a kid being lost and baffled really well.

Not looking forward to yet another AI movie, but oh well. Hoard really stayed with me. Strange week, movie-wise and beyond.
The Beast is giving me an eerie sense that this is what AI-era movies will be like. Mixing two languages randomly, sci-fi meets a sort of faux-regency era. Not digging it at all, conceptually, as a vibe or an idea, but I guess we’ve got no choice, this is how things will be from now on.

I'm finishing the day with All the Colors of the Dark and Samurai Rebellion. The former is a really weird ****er of a movie. For being one of the first Marvel movies, even though it was under Fox, it was a great movie. Blade is one of my favorite characters and Wesley was perfect for it.

Gotta get away from network TV. SNL is not on tonight. Go for the bottom. It's an all time favorite junk movie, Tremors. This classic spawned several lesser sequels, but the one to see is the first one. I needed a DVD at some point and bought it in spite of the fact that it came with 5 of those sequels. Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Reba McEntire and a diverse cast of oddballs battle giant carnivorous, fast, relentless worms in a dusty southwestern town. If you like cheesy sci-fi-monster movies, this is a gem. It's been sequel-ed and/or remade 5 times, but the first one is the one to see.

Read Stewart’s interview several months ago. Found the phrasing of ‘I Want to Do the Gayest Thing You’ve Ever Seen in Your Life’ a bit odd. But I guess I’ll see what it’s about. So far, I’m enjoying the visuals. Jena Malone is unrecognisable.
Not finding it remotely ‘sexy’, though. Strange, I guess it does depend on how much one can ‘relate’ to it all, which I can’t. But then I relate to LGBT films involving men much more, which is… perplexing. In any case, I mostly liked this. Atmospheric for sure.
The Incredible Hulk thing Jackie does and the surrealist ending (I literally had to read the Wikipedia summary which does inexplicably say, ‘Jackie arrives, having grown to a gigantic size due to the steroid use….’ Surely not?!) are a bit weird, but I guess that’s okay.

I get irrationally annoyed when horror movies "work", not because they are good, but just because they present a situation that I find stressful.

Like, there's no more craft in this film than in some random person walking up to you and saying, "Wouldn't it be terrible if you were trapped in a car underwater and it was filling up?".

Indeed. That’s fair. I think that’s a huge part of why people (admittedly those who don’t understand/appreciate it) disparage horror: it can be very emotionally manipulative and lazy in that way (‘Wouldn’t you be horrified to be stuck underwater…’ blah blah). But I feel like that applies to any sort of manufactured empathy/pulling on the heartstrings-type thing.

Yes, agreed.

I mean, there are a lot of movies that imagine a stranger breaking into your house, and some of them are incredible and some of them are exploitative or poorly-made garbage.

But my specific irritation is that I, myself, am so vulnerable to that as a viewer. That those buttons can be so easily pushed. Like if a movie features a person's pet dying, I will most likely cry. Because I so appreciate when a movie can elicit emotions through acting/craft, I feel a strong resentment when it's done cheaply because it's just pushing my personal buttons.

Kinda loving it so far. It's official, I am a definite Woody Allen fan. If it keeps up at the characterization and pace it's been going at, it'll get a spot in my top 100.

This is really unique. It uses my favourite opera tune in the opening credits by Jean-Christophe Spinosi (a largely unknown guy who I happen to know personally). Such a great film.

I think he's a d**che.

Good movie.

My ONLY complaint is that I wish the second Thanksgiving scene were expanded on to explore the characters' relations at the table. If it had that, it would be a perfect movie IMO. 98/100.

This one's a dose. A dose of what, I'm not sure. It's Cuckoo, a more or less German horror flick, one of those EU projects. A strange hotel that reminds you of the one in The Shining, except in Mittel Europa, a woman who sees strange people and nothing makes much sense, either to her or to me as a movie viewer. It's all ominous. I did read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia and that doesn't make much sense either. IMO, scary movies need an identifiable "horror", a set of victims and a resolution, none of which are in Cuckoo. Maybe that was the point. If you want to see it, please explain it to me. I probably won't be listening.

I stopped watching his around 2006.

There are two other actors I watched their filmography up to a certain point and stopped - Brad Pitt and Christian Bale. Started back up once I watched Valhalla Rising with Mads
Went back watched all I missed. I watched Valhalla Rising in 2010.

There used to be a band called Three Dog Night. That popped into my head in a variation that's called Two Dog Weekend, two movies I didn't like. I'm not sure how I got talked into this, but tonight's flick was It Ends With Us. Lily Bloom moves to Boston to become a florist (really??). She has abuse in her background, has a former boyfriend, "Atlas Corrigan" (really...again?), but falls in love with a neurosurgeon after her initial hesitancy. Hints of abuse follow, followed by definite events.

What follows is a confusing mess of events, recollections and revelations concerning past and present occurrences of spouse abuse by not just Lily's spouse but her father's abuse of her mother. Lily is pregnant. Things between her and her husband are rocky, but they stay together for a while, split, reconcile and have a baby, not all in this order.

I was not fond of the movie at all. Characters and time spans were confusing. Plot coherence was lacking. Casting was weird. At least Boston, in the background, looked good, even though it was digitally stapled into the background.

I'll never have those two hours back.

Off the back of the conversation about censorship, this kind of cinema needs to be made. Otherwise people won’t really process that it happens.

Damoiselles de Rochefort.

I had to turn it off after about 75 minutes. I enjoyed it in parts, and it's lovely to look at. I also thought the story was kind of neat in a too simple to be a real movie plot kind of way, but the singing was just doing my nut in.
It didn't bother me in UoC, but this one I just couldn't take it.
