This is really ****ing weird. Interesting, but the whole apps thing is revolting and even more so when there’s a child involved. What the actual hell? This is literally about a kid doing sex work but less tastefully done than Mysterious Skin.
I sort of wish that teenager’s phone got confiscated by a teacher at some point, she’d have a heart attack for sure.
It’s well-made, but something is seriously off about this, too.

xSookieStackhouse, I thought the music was pretty good (but then I do love blues). I didn’t think the story was anything special/particularly engaging, but overall, not a bad film, I’d say do give it a try. I suppose it can be seen as a feel-good film.

Another movie like he recommended "Rush". Redundant and stupid. I can see it now. "See? He's like Jesus!" and after an hour I thought, "They could have started the movie here" and then when I saw there was only 20 minutes left, I thought, "It doesn't matter what happens. This movie was made by an alcoholic crackhead" and there are so many movies like it. Of course one can make it more crass to get attention and it will probably work, unless the "sexual libertines" find it to be "digital rape"

Good movie, but it’s been stupidly bowdlerized.
I'll take the advantage of a message board to say what I won't say to him, because some people won't talk to someone if you criticize a movie, but I loathed it. Like the movie, "Rush".. It seems to have a good trailer, nothing else. Maybe taking advantage of the drug issue? "Trainspotting" was also made right before this one. The sequel was so awful, though.
With this movie, it was rinse and repeat. Drugs, sex, gambling, and then again. "Throw in the innocent old lady who cant' speak English! They'll love that!" The decor changes. Surrounded by huge crowds, huge buildings, but I found the entire bad. I just kept waiting for it to "start" and realized it was beyond boring. A complete formula. Cut-out movies. And I haven't been able to see a movie since, because I was so disgusted. I told this friend many, many times I don't bother with new movies for many reasons. I only have x amount of movies left in me to see, and I rather go with the probability.
Having said that, I do remember enjoying two newer movies you posted. I liked the movie poster, but mostly the face of the main character, and after finishing them both, I was moved by them, despite their flaws. "The Forest For The Trees" and "Paradise: Love". But that's 1%, and I go into every movie expecting to like it, otherwise I wouldn't prepare for it. It's why I use message boards, and many other tools to help me narrow things down.

Watched this on a recommendation, and it’s fine, but after the ‘His father was a powerful conjurer’ shtick this is just impossible to take seriously or invest any time in. Bleh.
Lately, I’ve been increasingly baffled by films where the protagonist is endlessly humiliated, swallows it, doesn’t fight back, and then it’s implied that the audience is supposed to cheer for that, for their downfall, as it were. It’s not even a horror thing but more like ‘Oh, X did a stupid thing. **** X. Good riddance’. I can just about understand this in a murder-by-numbers slasher, but any film worth its salt should do better though.
The protagonist is a bit too idiotically earnest as well. Nope, didn’t quite work for me.

I’m 61. I spent my childhood waiting for nuclear annihilation. I stopped worrying after the wall fell. I haven’t thought about it since. Maybe I’m being too optimistic.
I think I’m more likely to get stabbed by a neighbor or shot by a coworker.

Following a recent theme for me, watching a classic, The Brides of Dracula. It's from that collection of terrific British horror movies of the '60's and '70's, Hammer Films. Most of the Hammer Films had either Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee (the best of all Dracula actors) in a starring role. Hammer Films were well shot, well acted, with good production, good props and in vivid Kodachrome-like color, classics of their era. They had David Peel as Dracula and great hair stylists.

That seems to be the only right way to think about it.
I work very closely with the media, part of my role is controlling ‘the narrative’ (a good one, heh?). Inevitably, I’m forced to read much news and that does add to the overarching anxiety. At least once I come to watch something else tonight, I’ll go back to worrying about the stabbings and shootings.
In any case, before that, I’m also going to the opera, that should help.

I just finished Dirty Money (1972). Well, it's official: I'm not into Melville. God, the devil, the pantheon and even my own deity characters in my novel all know I've tried, but there's a very special slowness I can appreciate, and that usually stems in the form of Bela Tarr. And Melville might not be slow cinema, but his movies are focusing too much on the cool mood and not always enough on the characters and plot detailing. Dirty Money is a less interesting knockoff of Le Cercle Rouge that still gets the Melville vibe down, but it doesn't draw the rest of the movie for me. Le Cercle Rouge is much better even at an extra half-hour. 5/10. Here's REALLY hoping Second Breath and Doulos live up to the legend. Until then, I'm gonna watch Last Tango in Paris. I wanna get a 1972 list out of the way while working on my noir ballot, and unfortunately there isn't a lot of classic noir from 1972.

Never used to mind him, but while watching Wonka, I ended up very much sharing that sentiment. I do really enjoy the Dune universe Villeneuve has built (so far, that is), so I am still excited for that, but Wonka has certainly dampened my enthusiasm for Chalamet. The singing?! No. Just no.

I ended up largely hating Wonka (though the miniature Hugh Grant as a leprechaun or whatever he is was worth staying for ). His interview where he fumed how much he hated being in it and only did it because he has kids and needs the money was hilarious.
Dune is not for everyone. I like it though it’s not on my list of favourites or anything. I read an article about how it’s the rare sci-fi to deal with natural resources/commodities in detail, and having worked with commodities clients over the years, that added another dimension to it.

Sort of interesting - Perfect Days. It's set in Japan with a Japanese cast, subtitled, but directed by a German director Wim Wenders. It's an odd take on the life of a guy who makes his living cleaning public bathrooms (there are a lot of them in Japan). He takes pride in leaving a pristine bathroom when he's done, takes a somewhat Zen-like attitude to his job, while trying to have a sedate, quiet life. Then his niece shows up, following him at work and his place in life contrasts with her parents, who seem to be quite affluent. Things only get more complicated after that.
I liked it to a point, but it seemed to spend too much run-time watching Hirayama clean toilets and not enough developing a life for this stoic guy. He's a vivid character, and I'd like to see more of him, less of public toilets in Tokyo.

Well, that was my mother’s phrasing. She’s clearly a bit stuck on the WWII business, I guess it’s the geopolitics. If anything, I was initially trying to find something about WWI/the pre-WWI period from the German POV, but the 4-hour Bismarck biopic seemed a bit much.
Actually, it was really interesting. I find propaganda fascinating both now and then, definitely something worth seeing. I think if more people watched that kind of thing, there would be more wisdom going around, broadly speaking. Been meaning to see Riefenstahl ever since I read Feuchtwanger’s ‘The Lautensack Brothers’ decades ago, it has historical significance if nothing else.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter - Now and again, in the world of movies you never heard about, you hit a gem. I'm a fan of stories revolving around the original Dracula story that was written by Bram Stoker. I saw this direct to video version, a dramatization of a chapter in Stoker's book, advertised on Amazon, decided to give it a try. It's done really well, looks like video rather than film and goes to the feel of what it would be to be on a ship unwittingly transporting Dracula to England (the first chapter of Stoker's book). Acting is quite good, video quality is excellent and you know that this will not end well for the unfortunate crew of the Demeter. Nobody gets scared by books anymore, but a video of this part of Stoker's book gives you some insight on how scary this story could be.

Oh yeah....that one. Way back when, when it was new, theater patrons got a set of cheap, cheesy cardboard "glasses" when they entered the theater. They could use the glasses to see the ghosts (if they could stand it) or not see the ghosts, if they were about to die from fright. It was the grand old days of movie gimmicks like Illusion-O.

The Curse of the Werewolf, from my Hammer Films DVD set. These "horror" movies were well produced with lots of costumes and saturated color, unlike a lot of old black and white movies that "inspired" them. It featured Oliver Reed, well known in his time for his hell raiser life style. He was last seen as Proximo, the trainer of gladiators in Gladiator. This one features enough human cruelty, sadism and heaving bosoms that the werewolf seems downright sympathetic by comparison. You can probably find better ways to waste an hour and a half.

Watching an old favorite - The Thing From Another World. It's a terrific classic, 1951 sci-fi/monster film, in which an extraterrestrial plant monster that looks a lot like actor James Arness arrives when his flying saucer crash lands near an Arctic outpost and leaves "eggs" in the greenhouse. It's really a good movie, with a small cast of well drawn characters, military, civilian and those oddballs.....scientists. It has slight hints of cold war paranoia, post-war military "right stuff" and seems to hint at some equivalence between science and people who might be subversive.
Directed by Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby and shot in really nice, high contrast black and white, with menacing incidental music by Dmitri Tiomkin. This classic has been remade a couple of times, but this is the one to see.

I don’t think they ended up being gay; it’s more like ‘liberation from toxic men’. I don’t think we’re told explicitly where they ran off to, but somewhere warmer than France for sure.
I think you’re right and her friend didn’t know it was Alice’s husband. That was my reading.

There are like 3 or 4 movies made by Woody Allen which I haven't seen yet, and I found 3 of them:
Bullets over Broadway - 1994.
Melinda and Melinda - 2004.
Celebrity - 1998.
There's also The Beekeeper (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15314262) - made this year .... sometimes a bit of action doesn't hurt after a tiresome day :)
I think I'm gonna watch these during the following nights ...

Bullets over Broadway and Celebrity are nice of course.
Melinda and Melinda is the only of the Allens works which I've seen only once and don't have desire for re-watch.

I like most of his films, of course he made a large range of films and some do taste his movies and some don't like all of them. But I'm somehow glad he still makes films after so many years. The last one was Coupe de Chance (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15140278/) made last year. I enjoyed it a couple of nights ago.

Celebrity is my favorite Allen movie.
I like the majority of his films. But among my favourite films are :
Crimes and Misdemeanors - 1989.
Small Time Crooks - 2000.
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion - 2001.
Also like when he distributes roles to Wallace Shawn (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001728/) in his movies :)

His most interesting titles are not available for streaming anywhere so I will have to wait to purchase them on disc.
I highly recommend The Sweet Lowdown (1998), great movie. Think I rated it 8/10

Yes. Some of his old movies are difficult to find. With the new ones is much easier.
Some streaming services are buying films and TV shows from other companies. Maybe one day Woody Allen will be available too. Netflix has that "Classic Movies" section ... but you won't find too many there...

Yes, I’ve seen the entire trilogy and I would rank it exactly the same! This one is my favourite, followed by 1 and then 2. Tilda is a truly great, remarkable actress.

I did think the mother rôle was more nuanced, but she was just great overall. And indeed, I discovered it after my first watch, and this time around I could tell she really got along with the dog.

Oh, this is absurd. I get it we’re still in the woke phase and showing naked young women is a big no-no, but the female character is taking a shower to warm up while wearing her bra (and, apparently, knickers). Then she emerges wearing the same and proceeds to attempt to warm up/dry off by putting a dry, warm jumper over her (presumably soaked) bra. I mean, come on, people. This is beyond absurd. Why do the shower scene at all, it could have been skipped instead of this idiocy.
Other than that — relatively engaging.

I know this will be awful, but really want to go to the movies on this gorgeous summer day.
It wasn’t even that awful. I do find it funny how critics/audiences take issue with films about, for lack of a better word, upper class problems/upper class women feeling unhappy. I’m the first to admit I often find these nauseating, and this one was definitely a little melodramatic, but the mere fact the women are rich doesn’t really invalidate any of it. But hell, who am I kidding, I remember a creative writing workshop by a posh British author in London who said there’s no excuse to writing about upper-class female lawyers because ‘most people can’t relate to them’. There it is, relating again.
Other than that, I felt Chastain was definitely a little wasted on this, not sure about Hathaway, but it oscillated between oddly saccharine and kind of self-serious…
On the other hand, it validates my father’s paranoid viewpoint that one should never friends with one’s neighbours (or trust people at large) as the moment you turn your back, they’ll poison you, and any fondness they might have for your children has has got to be sinister.
Also, I don’t know, maybe it’s my self-imposed celibacy talking, but as usual, I cannot imagine why any of these people would sleep with each other, get married and slave away in their kids’ service. Some character development would help, I guess. Not sure, though.
I’d seen Bradshaw’s review by chance before I even watched the film, and this in particular seemed ridiculous: ‘Thriller about rich suburban housewives whose picture-perfect lives belie past traumas lacks the self-awareness needed to prevent it from being utterly absurd.’ I mean, what else do you expect from The Guardian, but this feels off to me; I’m all for self-aware meta-art, but in a film where a child dies and the ensuing grief and trauma play a huge part, I don’t see what that so-called ‘self-awareness’ would add/look like. ‘Oh, we’re so privileged and fortunate to own an upper-class home for our child to die in and for us to grieve in, we should be grateful and own our privilege’. What in tarnation is this crap?
