My grand finale this evening, one of my favorite movies, Dracula (1931) starring Bela Lugosi.
Part of the huge Universal Pictures monster movie series that conquered the big screen and helping tap the
last nail in the coffin of silent film.

Am finding the soundtrack set-up really annoying with the quiet-loud-quiet-loud music. The film is great, though.

I'm not going to bed until midnight, so I'll be watching another Tarzan movie as well as a noir entry I've been looking forward too. And if I have time, an old silent religious film called Christus.

Re-watching this one - Hitchcock's Rear Window. This is such an amazing flick. A news photog, laid up by a broken leg, nothing to do aside from watch his neighbors across the alley, tries to convince his elegant girlfriend (Grace Kelly) that something sinister is going on. It's classic Hitchcock, classic Jimmy Stewart and classic, pre-princess Grace Kelley, an amazing concept, taking place in something like "real time", much of it seen through the photog's nosy binoculars.
Much background music comes from one of the building's tenants, a jazz saxophonist, as well as a pianist, who lives on the alley.

Part of the 3 Musketeers through film history thing Im following.
First one was from 1921 starring Douglas Fairbanks
This one is from 1974 starring Charleton Heston, suggested by another forum user here.
And thirdly is this years French release, named The Three Musketeers - Part I: D'Artagnan, coming to US theaters on December 8th.
These three movies are roughly 50 years apart, spanning a full 100 years.

I did really like The Assistant, actually. Recognised a fair bit of my own early career travails. I really liked The Royal Hotel, too, it was just profoundly depressing. But I do think that was the intention, so hat off. I thought the latter especially was just really down on humanity, as it were.

What's arguably the strangest movie ever made, lost, destroyed and then resurrected multiple times? It's the 1922 version of Nosferatu, the first ever vampire movie, made in Weimar Germany, Directed by F W Murnau. It was the first vampire movie, and the widow of Bram Stoker, the guy who wrote the book Dracula, sued, claiming plagiarism, notably that she (executor of Stoker's estate) owned the very concept of a vampire. She won and the movie was outright destroyed, or so she thought.
Over the decades, film fans have managed to accumulate pieces of film, do restoration, and now, it's claimed that the entire movie is back again. Partial versions have been released before. In one memorable show, my partner and I saw that version of the silent movie, accompanied by a chamber group doing original music written for the movie. This one, a Kino disk, has the movie with original orchestral music. The video is quite good and the whole setting, 1922 Germany, looks downright other-worldly. Everything about this movie is strange, anachronistic, and surreal. It's one of my all time favorite horror movies
The movie was remade with Klaus Kinski as the blood sucker (pretty good as I recall), back in 1979 and, I see that another remake will be out soon, directed by Robert Eggers, the guy who brought us the excellent The Witch, The Northman and The Lighthouse. Eggers is the guy to do a remake. I'm enjoying the old one now, waiting for the 2024 release.

Saw that one way back on late night TV. That whole Kay Kyser and the Kollege of Musical Knowledge thing, a band leader dancing around in academic garb is a period piece, but what period? It wasn't when the movie was made. Near as I know, Kyser was unique. Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition was a big hit in it's day, as was this one.

Saw them both when they came out. "Creature" was in 3D but we only saw it in the flat version. The first one was real scary, but the two sequels strayed a bit. Also in 1954 were Them! and Godzilla.

Neither have I! I wanted to watch something with either Tilda Swinton or Helen Mirren. Have looked through both their filmographies a few times recently, but couldn’t seem to choose anything. In the end I typed ‘Tilda Swinton’ into Amazon Prime, and this was available. It’s not at all bad, I’m enjoying it. The soundtrack by David Byrne is also good.

Not only is it the best new Noir I have watched so far, but one of my favorite movies I have watched this year.
Lean is doing his thing in this one.
Lean with the camera and the shadows is just a magician. The mileage he gets out of just changing angles is on par with anything Welles was doing. I adore looking at his movies.
The movie does culminate to a courtroom drama
Can't say enough good things about this one. See it!

I’ve seen his earlier stuff, but boring from the last decade since The Canyons. Which stinks, btw. Although Lohan was ok in it.

I thought The Canyons was hilarious at the time, it’s so bad one can’t take it seriously.
Mishima, Hardcore, American Gigolo and Cat People are definitely his best, though I’ve enjoyed his newer stuff, especially The Card Counter, but also First Reformed and Master Gardener. I agree that they’re pretty ‘boring’ (I think I don’t mind because I have a theology degree), but they’ve still got his touch…
…unlike Dying of the Light, which he of course now says he disowns.

As these sort of movies go, this one is actually pretty good, played entirely straight. We have James Arness (pre-Gunsmoke and blond) as a "Government Man" and James Whitmore as The Sheriff, battling giant ants in one of those dusty southwestern towns where this stuff usually happens. The movie is THEM!. The cast plays it straight, the FX are not bad and the ants, if you saw them, are sufficiently creepy. Music is dramatic, as is the monochrome cinematography.
This one is pretty good.

Concept-wise, at least as far as human behaviour is concerned, this was actually pretty good. The ending was, if not exactly original, the kind I enjoy. I loved the ending (my much more ethically-inclined friend was horrified by it). Then again, how could a so-called ‘supervillain origin story’ not get me at least a little bit.
Overall, I’m always disappointed it seems to be impossible to address these themes without any teenagers or dystopias involved, as that would have been really interesting to see. I suppose Squid Game and Co have been trying to, more or less, but to me that’s still not quite there.

As these sort of movies go, this one is really damn good. It's Them!, in which giant mutant ants ravage a little dusty town. The army comes to the rescue. It features pre-Gunsmoke James Arness, Edmund Gwynn (not as Kris Kringle) and James Arness (not being Matt Dillon), playing it completely straight. It's really pretty good, a 1954 black and white, low budget big-bug movie.

The Equalizer II.
Love Denzel Washington in this role. Still lots to like. But not a patch on the first film.

Don’t like this one as much as I probably should, but love the music. The last 40 minutes of it is truly great.

Halfway through The 400 Blows. My only complaints so far are that the cinematography isn't special, and I'd like to as much character from Antoine's friend as their is for his parents and teachers. Other than that, it's a well-told story that keeps progressing and has a lot of great moments all working together. I also like its cute soundtrack.

What a strange movie - Poor Things. I can't call it a favorite but it sure was interesting and unusual. Emma Stone plays an artificial human, created by a strange, mega-scarred inventor played by Willam Defoe. It's full of fantasy imagery and high oddness, but, IMO, it dragged. I wanted this obvious Frankenstein plot to move along and get to it's point, which wasn't clear.
The "original", Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, from 1818, was all about the point, which was to be careful what you do, because it might outlive you and was a masterpiece of compact writing, made into a bunch of movies. Poor Things seems to be a new iteration on the Frankenstein theme. It's visually arresting, but unsatisfying to me.

I'm going to watch the longer director's cut of Midsommar tonight.
Last night's film was my first-time watching Violent Night. I've written a few words (https://www.top10films.co.uk/81153-review-violent-night-coasts-on-the-back-of-its-delightful-premise/) today about it. The film definitely lives up to its billing. Relying on the strength of its premise to coast its way through means it gets a little one-note but, as per its promise, serves up a sackful of bloodshed and butchery.

Tonight was The Iron Claw, the story of the Von Erich professional "wrassling" family. Prodded on by their father's harsh ambitions, a family of brothers all have careers in the weird world of pro wrestling. All but one of them meets an early end, either by real violence, ring injuries and suicide. This actually was a real family tragedy.
The movie is an insider look at the pro wrestling world, the characters, the training and rehearsals and the usual claims that it's "fake" and fixed. Without addressing most of those issues, the movie does show how, fake or not, it's a seriously dangerous way to make a living that takes a high toll on body and mind. You can check a Wikipedia listing of all the wrestlers that have died as a direct or indirect result of their weird performance and it's really a long list.
Most of the cast was unknown to me aside from one brother who is played by Zac Ephron, bulked up considerably since I last saw him. This is mainly a family tragedy, but a tragedy that is entirely the outcome of their choice of occupation. They'd have all been better as accountants or cops, or auto mechanics or big-box store staff. The wrestling performances were done by real wrestlers and were quite convincing. I recall being 14 and having a brief infatuation with all of that weirdness. As if I didn't know that already, this movie will convince you that there are much better ways to make a living.

That one was interesting in that the the character was apparently modeled after conductor Marin Alsop. Some years back Alsop was conductor of the Baltimore Symphony and I saw her perform a number of times. Ironically, she had a non controversial tenure, was a low-drama personality, was popular with the audience and did good things for the orchestra.
Oh well.....it was just a movie.
