In many ways, this movie is better than The HUSTLER..
So I heard about this movie a long time ago and saw it at V-STOCK on Blu-Ray and it's titled "UNCUT GEMS".. I wanted to see Adam Sandler's acting range and boy did I ever.. He's fantastic as an actor doing drama, but you should also be warned, there is simply nothing happy about this movie and it's subject matter and it has been said in reviews I've read that some people simply can't make it through this movie because of this, because there's too much chaos in the movie and it moves so fast you can't stop to breathe... It's very good, but also, not a movie I will revisit any time soon..

I'm currently re-working through my collection, re: year of release -- one of the benefits of being retired, is that I now (finally) enjoy the luxury of time enough to do this -- and am presently in the year 1936... so this is tonight's fare:

Having re-watched this flick, I'm once again struck by how near-perfectly Cooper seems suited to the role of laconic loner "Wild" Bill Hickock... and how wildly miscast smart, funny cosmopolitan Jean Arthur is as a weirdly clingy "Calamity" Jane. Still enjoyable lightweight fare, all in all, taken on its own '30s terms.

Do you have a lot of 1930s movies? I once hosted The MoFo Top 100 of the 1930s: The Countdown (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=58009), I love movies from that era but never seem to get a chance to watch them.

More breathtaking every single time I see it. Garbo is, of course, luminous; and if Henry Daniell's "Baron de Varville" isn't the quintessential cinematic scumbag, he'll do just fine until the real thing comes along. Magnificent.

Laughton is great!
The first time I ever saw Laughton working his magic -- I was ten, maybe eleven, tops -- was on my grandfather's old rabbit-ear television set one afternoon, while he and my folks were gabbing adult-stuff at one another during a visit to his place, leaving me bored and to my own devices. I'd flicked the tube on, not even knowing what channel it'd last been set to... and saw Laughton's Hunchback of Notre Dame, perched amongst unmoving gargoyles and mutteringly, despairingly: "Why was I not made of stone, like thee...?"
I honestly don't remember looking away from that screen again, even for an instant, until the end credits finally came up.
Laughton was the freaking man. :)

A "terrifying horror breakthrough"? I don't think so. A competent, teen thriller, yeah. There's a hand, just a hand, some sort of relic, and if you hold on to it, awful things happen. Bodies fly, blood spurts and you end up either zombie-fied, dead or pass it on. Whoever you pass it on to is so damn dumb that they do the same thing. In spite of all the running and screaming, it never seems to occur to the victims/suckers that they should just bury or burn the darn thing. I was suitably unimpressed.

Talk To Me - It's a "horror-thriller", or so they say. I can't say that I was either thrilled or horrified. So a bunch of teens find this strange, cursed hand, and, you can use it to summon the beyond. Anybody who's ever seen this sort of movie KNOWS that THAT never ends well. It doesn't in this movie either. What it did was to summon up lots of crash-y sound FX, lead to carnage and give us a reason whey teenagers are an endangered species. Unlike me, none of these folks realize that you just don't mess with stuff like this. See it....if you dare.

I seem to be hitting bottom this weekend...this one is Theater Camp, in which a group of kids and teens get to attend a summer camp in the Adirondacks. Some are talented, but raw, need polishing. Others are nerds. There will be a big show at the end of camp, everybody is expect to do something. Everybody in this carefully demographically balanced bunch of kids has issues and talents. We spend a lot of movie time watching awkward rehearsals and dealing with very predictable adolescent issues. It's not a Disney movie, but it should be.
I spent about 3/4 of the movie rolling my eyes at how predictable the whole thing was. The final quarter is the show, for parents and guests is actually quite entertaining. It should have been. I could not help but think of some of those old "Let's put on a show" movies, to save the orphanage, fix the church bell, or whatever else. I also could not help but wish they had Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney in the cast. Nobody in the cast was well known, especially the kids.

Sorta, a number of times. In his early days, his "world premieres" were in a church hall (surprised?) in downtown Baltimore. Waters and the cast would be present, aside from Divine (Glenn Milstead) who was not present, either in or out of costume. These were casual, crowded "meet and greet" events, so I did say hi to a number of cast members and Waters, but it was just a group event. Some of the crew were people I knew from when I was a kid. Waters definitely started out as a local guy.

Yeah, I think he maintains a residence in NYC, but also has a place in a somewhat sketchy location in Baltimore. He's always impressed me as a guy who never took himself seriously and has a good sense of humor.
For a while, he was featured in the No Smoking announcement at a local theater in which he obviously enjoys the heck out of his cigarette while he's telling the audience that THEY can't do it, even if it IS a long, foreign film.

Tonight's watch, a classic, The Thing From Another World - Howard Hawks directed - a space vessel from ???? lands near a 1950 arctic science outpost. It has a monster inside. The monster gets into the outpost. It's a simple creature feature, done really, really well. It has cheap FX (the proverbial rubber-suited monster), a compact, fast moving plot, excellent musical backing (Dimitri Tiomkin), simple sets and excellent acting. It's a very effective movie.

Over the years, Waters' place in Baltimore has evolved from a moral horror to a beloved local character who waves from an open car in the July 4 parade. His early movies were filmed on the run from police and a lot of people viewed his cast of characters as a threat to all that's good, decent and holy, especially that special sequence in Pink Flamingos where Divine eats dog poop. It was real. Legend has it that the dog was given a bit of ex-lax and followed around until it worked and the scene was shot.
After they shot that scene, Waters allegedly called an ER, proclaiming that "my child ate dog poop" and was told to keep him under observation for a couple days. There are a lot of local stories about the Waters crew and their exploits around Baltimore. Having attended school with some of his early, local cast members, I heard lots about a guy named Waters, who was said to want to make movies even when he was a kid and subsequently became kind of a pied piper, leading his actors to perdition. The actual real-world identity of Divine, Glenn Milstead, was kept secret for several years.

I heard some similar things about the poop stuff from Pink Flamingos (though not from a cool, real-life rumor mill!).
It's really amazing (and good...?) to hear how Baltimore has come around to Waters. I hesitantly wish that he would be my neighbor.

Tonight's movie was Jules - It's sort of a sci-fi fantasy, feel good flick. A flying saucer crash lands near a rural Pennsylvania small town and 3 fairly isolated seniors (not high school students, but old folks) find it and an enigmatic passenger. The main character, Milton, leads a lonely life, making regular appearances at town council meetings to issue the same complaints, only now, he has found an alien. Only Milton and two eccentric friends have seen the alien and all seem like candidates for the dementia clinic, especially when they tell anybody else.
The alien seems quite harmless, somewhat befuddled on earth and completely non-verbal, although seemingly understanding what's going on by some sort of intuition. It seems that the alien needs something that can be used to repair the vessel (I won't mention what), and these folks going to shelter "Jules" and obtain what he needs with some help and hinderance from the other locals in this small, isolated town.
Jules veers and steers a course between maudlin, soapy, feel-good and whimsical, sometimes hitting all four in the same moment. I liked it, but could not help thinking that pulled a bit too hard on my heart-strings and moved somewhat slowly. I enjoyed it, felt glad that Jules (not ET, mind you) got to go home, but I couldn't quite get teary.

I watched a movie from 1984 riding the wave of JAWS at the time in terms of homage and it was titled "RAZORBACK" about a 900LB Giant Razorback terrorizing the outback and the best thing about this virtually unknown movie was the Practical FX they used along with Animatronics to bring this thing to life and it just goes to show, that Practical FX will always beat CGI any day..

Yes, this inspired the ‘hate-watching’ thread. I hate musicals and all manner of singing in films, and I’m kind of anti-everything here but, well, needs must and full disclosure: this was a free ticket. (Hilariously, an article in National Review of all places which no, it actually wasn’t dissing the film, convinced me to watch this).
https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQaoW2gxmJFDPtqfC9pGL6Rdist9nH9ntMLV7XR1FXpaQj1VrGT
Not much singing, thank god for that. It’s not at all as awful as I thought, the visuals are great but the ‘plot’, if it may be called that, is just tragically stupid.
The world-building makes no ****ing sense. I do not for the life of me understand why they had to diss The Godfather, even though I don’t love it myself.
Fun fact: a couple (dressed in normal casual, not pink) just walked out with me, and the woman said to the guy, ‘See, it wasn’t so bad, was it?’

I'm going to watch this chick-flick for posterity. It was one of those movies that when you were a teen, you'd be passing through the living room, you're mom and her friends would be watching this or something similar and you say to yourself, just keep walking and go somewhere else. Well, its a Johnny Depp movie and I quiteenjoy his movies a lot so this dont look so bad. A period piece, in the vein of Grease Lightning.

I'm sorta cynical about car-race movies. Usually, a guy from a modest background has talent and ability, gets into car racing, and, if he doesn't immolate in a godawful wreck and get discouraged by snotty established drivers, he goes on to great things. It helps to have an experienced mentor, who's seen it all, had a bad "landing" and takes the young guy under his wing. It all happens in gran turismo (note the lower case). Racing sequences are quite good, however, so it's entertaining for a couple hours. This one is based on a real driver, but takes considerable liberty in the plot.

Just finished Thief. I'd like some stronger characterization, but the direction, story and music are quite good if not great.

A rare film starring Patrick Stewart in an unusual role for him, rock club manager. Good reviews, I'm going to watch this tonight. This must be the rarest version of the poster because only one image can be found and its almost a thumbnail. It also happens to be the best looking poster

At last, something on Shudder.
Nope… truly awful, walking pastiche.
The visuals are occasionally great. The narrative — not so much.

Nicole Kidman was beautiful in 2004 when this was released. Watching her yesterday in “Becoming the Ricardos”, she’s had a ton of Botox to recreate that beauty.

Indeed, she has. I do find I always love seeing her, even now — imo she was gorgeous in The Northman, The Undoing, etc. A bit over-Botoxed indeed, though.
