Now and again, you find a "special" one. From one of my cheesy, late night monster DVD sets, a movie I do recall from late night TV monster movie shows, The Monolith Monsters (1959). It's an improbable plot. Meteors from space. One of them starts to make more rocks. It's a chemical freak, a rock that reproduces. It doesn't have any purpose. It just makes more big rocks that fall on people and buildings, smashing everything in the big valley out west where it was filmed. If you come into contact with these rocks, YOU turn into stone.

Surprisingly, for a movie like this, acting and monochrome cinematography is really quite good. It's much more dramatic than cheesy. I like this one.

Indulging some Lovecraft high weirdness. It's the movie version of The Call of Cthulhu, a silent, black and white movie, done some years back (2005), directed by Andrew Lehman, using the cinematic technology of Myth-o-Scope. This movie is really cool, probably the only fairly faithful movie version of a Lovecraft story.

It has incidental music and intertitles, just like any self respecting movie from 1915. I love this movie, saw it at a festival a while back and had to buy a copy from the film maker who had a table by the door. It's violent, ax-in-the-head stuff, with slanted and surreal camera angles, insane maniacs and "pagan savages". It's all also HP Lovecraft, not cleaned-up for contemporary sensibilities.

Not exactly a movie, but very cinematic, from the old vintage Outer Limits series -

Tonight's Outer Limits episode, from the infamous/famous season 2 - The Demon With a Glass Hand - This one is strange beyond strange, said to be in the top 100 TV episodes of all time. Adapted from Harlan Ellison, it's been said to be the inspiration for The Terminator, although that is much more true of another TOL episode, Soldier. In this one a guy with no past (Robert Culp) has a glass hand, missing fingers, that contains the entire human race, encrypted to save them from a planetary holocaust.

It's all set in a stark, unpopulated urban desert, a German Expressionist fantasy world with dark eyed goons in pursuit. This one is seriously off the rails and completely bonkers, with invisible portals, minimalist production, a missing 70 billion humans and stark shadows.

I can't call it tonight, since it's almost after midnight, but it was the night for the second episode of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers, big screen, excellent quality imagery, big sound at the Theatre, a re-run of the long version of the trilogy. After all these years, it really still works. This movie is just so dark and full of parallels to the most awful parts of the 20th century, only populated by orcs, dragons and wizards, instead of dictators, nazi goons and bombs. It also has moments, the ones without demons and monsters, however, that appear almost documentary, like you're really there. The humans at least are quite believable.

Fortunately, our plucky crew of misfit humans, hobbits and elves manages to survive the day and continue until the final climax in the third episode. We saw it back when it was new and then on video, and its gloom and hope resonate even more now.

Key and Peele delivering the goods as usual. Still, it raises the question of black authenticity, and specifically masculinity in the context of a sort of imaginary perfection (e.g., of power, seduction, style). The skit deflates the gothic vampire mythos with a pedestrian mythos of black masculinity. Eddie Murphy had a similar bit about why you never see black people in horror movies (the black family, we are told, leaves when they hear an evil voice say "Get Out"). Other comics have deflated horror with comments about black people having enough sense not to get lost in the woods, etc. Thus we have a sort of folk wisdom (embodied in a racial point of view) poking fun at the "awe" of vampires and demons and such.



Just as Tolkien felt the need to give England an epic mythology in LoTR, Jordan Peele has been attempting to offer a black POV in horror in his films. I think the results are mixed, but it's nice to see someone trying to exceed the bar of Blacula and Tales from the Hood.

I really enjoyed this film, despite the fact that K. Costner is/was nothing like New Orleans. D.A. Jim Garrison. I've studied dozens of books on the subject, and this film comes pretty close to the truth.

I was 19 when Kennedy was assassinated, and the whole country went dead for a couple of months. It wasn't until well after the Zapruder film was released to the public in 1970, showing that at least one shot was fired from the front right, did the suspicion start taking hold that it was a conspiracy, not a lone nut.

Oliver Stone combines documentary and drama styles together about as well as anyone. Another good one: Snowden (2016).

I've just learned there is a sequel from 2021 called JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass which I haven't seen, so I'm looking forward to that one.

OK, I'm 45 minutes into EMPIRE of all things. And yeah, Warhol was a cinematic idiot when he thought of this. By the 20 minute mark I was thinking to myself, "if I see one more ****ing helicopter!"

So far, the coolest thing was seeing a cloud grow and shrink to nothing. And when darkness strikes, the colorization becomes beautiful. But still, this isn't exactly something I would "recommend" to anybody. Unless there's a spy climbing down the Empire State Building with blueprints for a spy hideout in his butt.
