Still worth a watch for sure. It’s extremely entertaining, but tone-wise I felt the first part was much more accomplished. The ending here really felt very slapdash and out of place to me, but a very fun film still.

Quite like it, it’s certainly engaging.
The age discrepancy does bother me, though; the character gets a job interview for an unpaid internship at an ad agency, and Aubrey Plaza is 38 years old. I mean, sure, you can be an intern at any age, and blah, blah, blah, but unless this is a major plot point as in The Intern, it feels very improbable to me…
Then again, we have Kelly Reilly playing ten years younger on Yellowstone, so I guess… don’t see a reasonable excuse for a feature film to pull that kind of thing, though; when it comes to TV shows, there’s at least a show time vs real time thing going on.
The ending is also very original, I wish there were more like it.

Believe it or not, you were the one (in the Yellowstone thread I think, I almost tagged you!) to say she was playing ten years younger (😁), but either way, with Reilly is totally works, she does not look anything like 45. But with Plaza and in most other cases, I find it very distracting.

I agree. Everyone was completely bowled over by this one in '62. It's a tour de force by David Lean and DP Freddie Young, shot in glorious Super Panavision. A true heavyweight cast. I think it's one of the best epic films ever produced.

It'd be so nice if movies could be true to their source. Things will change from one medium to the next. Some things just don't work in a book that work on a movie, and vice versa, and et al. And things need to be condensed to fit the time frame, so melding some characters and events is inevitable. But to stray so far it's its own thing is rarely, if ever, successful.

I'm expecting a call from someone I doubt shows up, but I must remain flawless, and if I say something, I follow through, but after today, I'm turning my phone off until 2023. The only pleasures I get from life these years is seeing a great (or even good) movie for the first time, or finishing a biography/interview/diary book, but I rarely do it. And I don't want to force myself, because that could destroy the experience, but in a few minutes, I'll try to watch "The Quiet Man".. I remember renting this from the library on the 4th of July weekend about ten years ago, but the DVD skipped a few times, and I didn't think much of it, but Mort Sahl talks about it all the time, so I'll try and watch it straight through, although, I remember being annoyed with the silly characters, the exaggerated Irish-ness, too much energy from the characters, which is probably my only criticism of older movies (the acting is similarly disappointing in the same way).

Something like 4.5/5. It was a bit disappointing as I had super-high expectations, but at the same time, there’s nothing in particular I have an issue with. The ending is subversive, I suppose, but overall, nothing special.

Yes, I do like it very much. I’ve seen it a few times already. I think it’s very well done, pretty perfect for something so complex imo. Everyone does a stellar job. And as someone who’s spent many years working in/with the media, the journalistic aspect is very accurate and detailed, which I also like.

Massively enjoying this. My lucky day. As with Tár, it’s interesting how this was criticised by FN for being anti-FN, but in many ways, it’s a perfectly deep analysis of FN/right-wing activism and doesn’t seem to me particularly biased either way, for once!

One thing that I find off-putting is the horrendous spelling/syntax in all written materials in this film. I guess texts with no capital letters or punctuation are a fact of life (can we really argue, though, that everyone texts like that?). But when we get to the psychiatric facility where in the very least employees would have to be educated, the fact that they’re using role-playing scripts with the same horrendous spelling and syntax as the texts is just ridiculous.
Anyway, Primer this ain’t.
One scene 1 hour through is genuinely disturbing and reminded me of Run, not in a good way.
Also, why the hell is the display of Conners’ watch entirely in Russian?
