It’s alright, easy on the eye, but not very memorable. I know Jarmusch is capable of brilliance, but for me, nothing comes close to Dead Man & Only Lovers Left Alive. But I love Tilda too, and so does he, so that was one reason to watch this. :)

Always have a special respect for filmmakers who are also musicians, as I then get a whole new soundtrack to add to my collection with every film.

Yup, I do. I write one thing or another nearly all day (or day & night, very often) and I’ve developed a bizarre sensitivity to everyday noise over the years, almost like misophonia, so I’m in headphones 24/7 to focus/exist, and that means I need a lot of music, and an ever-replenishing supply thereof, too.

Yeah, I did do Thor, Love and Thunder tonight. It was the night for dinner and a movie and we'd seen the other flicks on the block, so, against my better judgement, we saw it. I'm glad that my judgement is still intact. At least dinner was good.

I'll take a quote from Google - "Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced -- a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods."

Yeah, that's it. Some of us might recall that Thor is a Nordic god, but the Greek Zeus shows up there too. We have a couple of magic hammers, a magic thunderbolt and some magic swords, so you know that the animators had a busy time on this flick.

A bunch of God-Kids have been kidnapped and don't have much of a future, so the adult gods have to get in lots of fights with various villains. Don't expect much in the way of Nordic metaphysics but it's kind of a fun thrill ride. It's loud, fast and doesn't demand much that will distract you from your popcorn.

Always had a lot of respect for Jeremy Saulnier. I’ve obviously seen this before, but recollections vague enough for it to be very enjoyable.

Many didn't enjoy this film, I really did. It's subtle in meaning, it doesn't tell much, and somehow people don't like that, not just nowadays but in the recent centuries.

I still believe the only reason Parasite (2019) won at the Oscars was mainly due to the director's press conferences explaining what the film meant, and the meaning resonated as a political stance with a lot of people.

The Greatest film about cultural differences between Europe and America that was ever made in my opinion. Without Bruno S. this film couldn't be done, to this day Werner Herzog says he was the best actor he ever worked with. There are many things that I find funny on the human level:

Bruno was a forklift operator in a German factory. He used to sing outside, like in the film, no one liked him or his music, people ignored him.
In Cannes he was arrested, he was singing outside, and they thought he was some homeless guy, so they arrested him, and he never made it to the premier.
After the film he went back to the factory he used to work and the people that looked away, that didn't see him, started to take an interest in him.

Hmm, well, personally I’ve never read anything Bong Joon-ho said about it. I also think a lot of Parasite is, well, self-explanatory, class etc., almost more self-evident in the West than elsewhere. That I think is why it won at the Oscars. Anyway. I did enjoy Hold the Dark (hence I actually used the word “enjoyable”), but I don’t know if I feel it’s making as much of a “point” as Parasite. Which actually in a way is something that appeals to me, because like as I might Parasite (and I love it), I find it incredibly preachy.

The Thing, the 1982 version, done by John Carpenter - This is really terrific, a completely paranoid story, in which an extraterrestrial spacecraft crashes in the Antarctic, near a US outpost. The "Thing", as a monster is dead, but apparently has infected one or more of the sled dogs and crew of the outpost. It takes over your body, eventually reproducing the original creature, but not before it uses the human body to spread the infection.

Anybody can be a thing, there's no way to tell aside from a sketchy blood test that may or may not be right. It's cold, damn cold, outside the compound, nowhere to go. It's either freeze to death or be infected or fight the thing, by burning the body of the person who's infected.

This movie is so grim and paranoid, set in the cold and polar dark, with nowhere to run. The only place to hide is inside the compound with whoever might be infected.

The story is loosely based on John Campbell's "Who Goes There", written in the 1940's and was adapted into the 1950 masterpiece The Thing From Another World. In the old version, without good FX, the thing was just a humanoid monster, but that version is terrific too. Carpenter's is quite different, but both of them are masterpieces of paranoid claustrophobia....locked into a burning complex, with a monster and the cold.

I have a couple rulers about watching movies. When I check out a new director, always check out more of his/her movies. And always start a movie series from the first to get the full experience. Remakes are optional.

So I'm thinking of checking out 6-Headed Shark Attack for more Mark Atkins, since it's gotta be a mock of 2-Headed Shark Attack, so before watching that, I have to get into Christopher Ray.

But wait! Christopher Ray is known for two sequels to Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus, so I gotta check out a few movies by Jack Perez.

BUT WAIT! One of HIS most notable movies is a sequel to Wild Things! Why do b-movie directors do other people's sequels all the time?

And that's the story of how I'm watching Wild Things. I planned on watching a few more erotic thrillers anyway, and John McNaughton doesn't make a lot of sequels. Talk about six degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Tonight's movie, a classic, The Monolith Monsters (1954). The monster for this one is rocks that grow. A small dusty western town, the kind that show up in a lot of these movies, has something strange. Apparently a meteor landed and whatever it's made out of is growing. Fragments of the rock are growing into huge crystals, which fall over, smashing buildings, creating havoc. The town's citizens, exposed to the rock, turn to something like rock themselves. How do you stop this?

For a movie of this sort, it's actually pretty good. Actors play it straight and the animation that makes the monsters is pretty good. Like any such movie, there's a magic cure, but I'm not saying what it is.

As these sort of movies go, it's really pretty good. No-name actors do their roles well, the FX of the "monsters" as well as town scenery are also nice. The tense, somewhat morbid music enhances the drama. Not bad for this era.

I loved The Hunger Games. Scarface too.

I did love Scarface, it’s a classic. The Hunger Games I think has a very good concept, and I’m a fan of Jennifer, but it just felt a bit flat/simplistic. The “bad guys” gang cast was exquisite, though.

And then again, I don’t really dig even the best of dystopias except for Brazil & 12 Monkeys etc. They just never quite engross me. I think it takes much more skill and imagination to craft a compelling story, especially of the speculative kind, in as “real world”/normal context as possible.

Tonight's noir film - Dark Passage, which does double duty as one of those Bogart-Bacall flicks. This time, Bogie escapes from San Quentin and is met by Bacall, who knows who he is and helps him in his escape, even though he doesn't know who she is. This being a noir film, of course complications and lots of cynical dialog happen. Bogart's character gets a plastic surgeon to change his face, but he's still Bogart. Escape to South American is their way out. Personally, if I were Irene (Lauren Bacall's character) I'd have just stayed out of this mess, but then, it would not be a noir film. She believes that he's innocent. We (the omniscient viewers) will never know. A lot of it is filmed with a kind of first-person perspective, as though we are seeing through Bogart's eyes, an interesting gimmick, but definitely a gimmick. Don't miss the taxi cab ride, a great sequence.

Tonight's movie was Nope - A new film by Jordan Peele, who wrote, directed and produced. I've loved Peele's earlier movies, notably Get Out and Us, since, in his bones, he seems to be a guy who understands cheesy horror movies and how to make them better. In Nope, an African American guy has a business training and supplying horses to the movie industry. A number of businesses like that have long been supplying horses for movies and TV in real life. Otis Haywood (played by Daniel Kaluuya), is being challenged by a competitor.

Then things change. Electricity fluctuates, strange things fly around and a UFO appears. The UFO sucks up his competitors like ET with a big vacuum cleaner, and gets ready to suck up Otis and his family too. Why? Who knows. Before it's over, Otis has to figure out how the UFO is vulnerable to save his business and family.

I really enjoyed this. As a fan of old, geeky monster/sci-fi movies, this is right up my 15 year old alley. It's not as simple as The Creature from the Black Lagoon, but has some plot turns that make it more interesting. The characters are appealing, as is the plot exposition. In short, it's a better version of movies like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, a homage that's better than what it imitates. The UFO is unlike any one I've seen in movies, a sort of fabric monster. It's a fun movie. Peele, being the guy behind the curtain, seems to love this kind of movie...a latter day Roger Corman. If you've liked Peele's other movies, this one won't disappoint.

It’s only Picturehouse that I know of, but I love it. I usually go to Picturehouse Central, but I’m sure if one location shows old films, others do too in some shape or form. I went to see Vampyr (1932) there, also a lot of Hitchcock. It’s a great cinema, everything very chic and old-school.

Vengence - Wow...it's written, directed and starred by B J Novak, the guy I mainly remember from The Office. He's jumping straight from the sitcom world into the status of auteur. It's really pretty good, although its cognitive demands might require a re-watch.

BJ plays Ben Manalowitz, a podcaster from New York. He had "hooked up" with a young woman in NYC, but back in her home town in a dusty, dismal corner of west Texas, she's been murdered. He arrives to report on this and meets up with her family, a non-verbal bunch, both mourning the loss of the woman as well as being asked a lot of personal questions by this urban guy from New York that they know nothing about. The inevitable cultural clashes occur when he stays with them, and tries to interview and record other people in the town who might know something about the murder.

It doesn't help that this is an isolated town, in a hinterland between several police jurisdictions, where disputes are often settled outside the law and this guy has just seriously stepped into this situation....a city guy with a podcast and no six-shooter. Eventually he learns to communicate with them, learns to understand their insularity. He's part of the story now, not just a guy with a recorder. I'm not saying how this turns out.

For me, it was a very tense movie (I do NOT want to live there), with a lot going on verbally. There's not much action or imagery, there are a LOT of words and it's challenging. The movie almost seems like a stage play. The cast is quite good in their roles as these way far away Texans, as is Novak as the interloper. Justice will be done. Somehow. Like the characters in the movie, I'm not saying and nobody should ask. We take care of our own business here.

I know it's generally not permitted here, but I'm trying anyway.

I have a project with my girlfriend of watching the most interesting movies possible per year. Now we are at 1940 and there are some films we want to see, but cannot find. If I can pay online to rent these films, it would be fine by me, it doesn't have to be free.

I have tried online, at my local libraries, with no success. So if some of you know where to find any of these 2 films, send me a message or tell me, I'd highly appreciate it.

The 2 films are: The Mortal Storm and Remember the Night (I also leave the IMDB ID for both films)

Not a favorite - Bullet Train, which wants to be a Quentin Tarantino movie but ends up being a David Leitch movie. The object of desire is a steel suitcase full of money and gold, fairly cheesy as these things go, but it gets used a lot to deflect bullets. Brad Pitt is not bad, as Brad Pitt, the rest of the cast is functional. The ads mention Sandra Bullock, but she just shows up for a few minutes, mainly putting her latest plastic surgery on display. Oh well.

A variety of gangster bad guys are competing to get the suitcase and Pitt's character is some sort of good guy, but it doesn't really matter since what they mainly do is to carve a wake of bloody shootings, decapitations, stabbings, clubbings and tosses-off-buildings around Japanese cities.

I knew what the movie would be, expected it to be that strange genre of entertaining bloodbath, but it mainly was a bloodbath. It had its moments of humor, but it's not high on my list.

Someone asked me, this morning, how the flick was. I could not waste a good snarky retort, so here it goes.

"I thought it was not that good. I'm middling on the genre itself, the humor of violent death, but there are plenty of movies of that sort where there's enough humor to outweigh the squirting arteries and severed limbs. Pitt's charm couldn't outweigh the rest of the cast, which seemed like extras in a TV show. When I finally DID see Bullock, I kept focusing on her new nose."

Road rage films mostly still work for me as I generally feel stressed behind the wheel. But on the minus side, everything now reminds me of Wild Tales’ Crime of Passion segment, to an unhelpful comedic effect.
This is pretty good, but unlike any Nordic film I’ve seen (off the top of my head), it’s ridiculously preachy. Drive slowly, follow the speed limit. I can understand the narrative about not insulting other drivers as in Wild Tales, but it really is up to the man if he wants to drive fast. Weird concept.
As a few reviews have noted, “do what the angry man says” is a strange message.

I don’t entirely “get” the supposed psychology of this film. The voiceover is also incredibly weird.
Another part of me however thinks this is a May/Carrie-type snobbery of lonely/introverted/socially awkward people, which is understandable, but an odd thing to become aware of.

Yeah, IMO, you didn't miss much. We went mainly because of the location of the theater, near dinner and an art opening that we needed to attend for a friend, and because we had already seen the other ones that were playing. It was a night on the town, which has been rare these weird couple years, but the movie was the low part.

Watching an old classic, The Forbidden Planet from 1956. It's a take on Shakespeare's The Tempest, a surprisingly smart plot line for a ray-gun sci-fi movie of its time. In their day, the model-based FX were astonishing as was Robbie the Robot, who was an essential character as well as comic relief.

I saw it at a drive-in as a kid, taken there by my parents. The climax, with the Id-Monster (a monster materialized out of human hostility by fusion reactor instrumentality in the planet) scared the crap out of me, didn't sleep right for a week. It's still pretty darn good and it has Leslie Nielson as a starship commander. The Id Monster is some kind of hand drawn animation, but still nightmare worthy.

The movie was unique in its time for a completely electronic musical soundtrack. Sound FX were blended into the music, so that the audience realizes that the monster is approaching due to the music.

So far I’m enjoying this, but it also appears to be a prime example of people deciding on four gay characters to open the film and then engaging two of them in dialogue such as:
“Adorable!”
“Of course, it’s a gay B&B.”

Not my cup of tea, though I love Andrea. The only thing I enjoyed that was not unlike this is Only Lovers Left Alive, and that was owing to Jarmusch’s idiosyncrasy. So sorry, nope (more on that later).

As far as Peele is concerned, nothing he makes counts as horror to me, but hell am I looking forward to this.

Aaand it was pretty good. Really enjoyed it, which I can rarely say these days. Nothing about it was remotely horror-like, as expected, but a very enjoyable sci-fi nonetheless. Worth noting however that it does somewhat plagiarise the best bits of the Resolution/The Endless premise/universe, what with the looking up/sky monster looking at people who shouldn’t look back at it. But I guess Peele gets to exploit his Peele-ness and get away with it. Also thought the idea of a “bad miracle” (not that this is overly eloquent) deserved a much better, deeper treatment. That was what originally stood out to me in the advertising and it wasn’t even there.

The actual “nope” reaction I did find hilarious. At the same time, as someone who loves all things understated (especially horror), I did feel something was conceptually lacking; it felt more like the “not much to say” understated than the “a lot to say” kind.

I’m not sold on the concept (feels a bit crass?), but loved Persepolis, so am intrigued if this’ll be similar.
Strangely, I didn’t like this at all. The attempt to make it “relevant” is just nauseating. Can we not leave some things alone? The world is going nuts for sure. It takes a certain ingenuity (not the good kind) to make an Anne Frank film about 21st-century refugees. It’s incredibly well made of course, especially the underworld bit, but that’s not quite enough for that sort of thing.

This is utterly heartbreaking. I love it, but it would be more believable if the software turned a male protagonist into a woman, not vice versa.

Yes, of course. Liked it less than Get Out, but some bits of it were great, and I could have suffered through anything to listen to I Got 5 On It. In fact his music choices are a big part of why I always look forward to Peele.

Every night I tell myself, "Tomorrow you must watch a movie. Your life depends on it", and then I don't. Finding movies is hard enough, and then finding where to view them is another story.

I'll try to watch this today. A movie directed by Louis CK. Everyone who has seen it says it's great, but of course the "professionals" know they have to shit on this movie to keep their jobs/money/girlfriend on the side.

Not my cup of tea, but generally respect Verhoeven, so let’s see.

Edit: yeah, this was… I guess the most succinct summary would be to say I didn’t understand the point of this. But okay. Ticked off the list.

Was the best part of this movie the breasted film cover?

I have no idea! I would imagine the US/Get Out soundtrack will be on Spotify in some shape or form. (I don’t use it so can’t say). Michael Abels who has scored all Peele’s films to date blows my mind. He makes unforgettable music. I remember being on holiday in Athens just before the pandemic and they played the Get Out Abels score by the pool at night! I didn’t even need to Shazam it, I knew that was it, but my brain did do a double take. I thought that was incredible and a testament to how good the music is.

Not quite, but you’ve got the right idea. They were both very hot women and looked very hot naked. The dildo was great (I don’t know if that’s a spoiler?). But none of that means it was worth watching
