While I tend to plan what I want to watch out well in advance, my spouse is absolutely the opposite: picking things mostly on the fly and even then oftentimes changing her mind right up until the last minute.

That being said, the smart money is on them picking out The Northman tonight. They picked it out last night after the baby went down, but last minute switched it to The Sadness. I’d be shocked if they didn’t go back and pick The Northman for tonight, now.

That’d suit me just fine, being the case. I’ve been pretty desperate to see it since it first came out and don’t really get to pick out movies for us to see all that often (pretty much just when I’m home alone with the baby which is understandably rather… limiting). So here’s to hoping!

Just finished Hercules and the Captive Women and The Cyclops. Both bad movies but worth the cheese.

Now I'm starting Stagecoach and I'll finish it tomorrow. I'm deeply invested in the characters; this is one of the most character-driven movies I've seen so far, but I hope the plot picks up after the first act. By the way, I'm typing this out with my eyes practically glued to the screen, so sorry for any typos if any.

Tonight, from the DVD collection, The Monolith Monsters - mysterious rocks, arriving as meteors, in the usual dusty southwestern town of movies like this, turn into giant crystals that don't do much other than fall over, but when they do, they crush anything in their path. As a bonus, a human that comes in contact turns into something like fragile concrete. It's one of the better produced, acted and shot movies of this sort.

A night for more Film Noir - This one is D.O.A. In the opening scene, a guy (Pat O'Brien) barges into a police station to report a murder....his. He's told that he has ingested "luminous poison" and that he has anywhere from hours to weeks before he dies. There's no cure or antidote. He's determined to find his murderer before he dies. The movie lurches through a sequence of doctors, cops, another victim, plot twists and stolen iridium (is that the poison?).

It's really classic noir, black and white, guys always wearing suits and fedoras, tightly clad femme fatales, lots of cigarettes, fast talking and urgent phone conversations. "You're in this up to your pretty little neck".

Time to re-watch this, The Forbidden Planet. In spite of the cheesy costumes, it was a very smart plot line. It's a distant planet, colonized by earthlings, but people are being torn apart, limb from limb, by an invisible monster. The planet contains an ancient instrumentality, left behind by an extinct race, The Krell, that materializes thoughts into reality, a very dangerous thing, which finished them. Humans are violent, sordid creatures, and the machines are turning their base impulses into this monster, which is fed with energy from a giant fusion reactor. For late 1950's, the FX were absolutely state-of-the-art. It also had Leslie Nielson as the starship captain and some excellent non-digital animation and sound effects, as well as an early electronic music soundtrack.

It really depends on taste and mood, even. I found it profoundly unscary (and though I knew to expect it as gothic usually doesn’t stir me at all, it was still a bit disappointing in that way). It’s very well done, there’s technical craft there etc. Just not my cup of tea. I’d still be super-keen to know what you think, as ever.

I am a HUGE Mikkelsen fan. I have been for over a decade. My first film was King Arthur, then Pusher and Valhalla Rising. I have seen everything but two which were hard to find at the time I was looking.

I first saw Pusher relatively recently, and he’s unrecognisable there! I must have gone through all of his stuff by now. Which ones haven’t you seen?

I am a huge fan of Jake as well. The above was a bit repetitive, which is a shame, as at first it’s really quite gripping. Not for the squeamish as there’s a bit of (slightly misplaced perhaps?) medical detail.

But Jake does improve it.

Ha, the executive producer is here (at the “most depraved cinema in London”, as they call it)! Nice enough guy.

He says we should expect to puke. Dear Lord. Ah well.

Apparently, this is meant as homage to Evil Dead, which, okay…

Edit: Yeah, well. It does kind of keep one engaged-ish up to a point, I’ll give it that. But overall it is awful. Then again, found footage/shaky cam to me is always an exercise in laziness. Might be the first time in recent memory where I a) felt my gag reflex activate and b) kind of regret watching something. It’s not on par with the likes of Cannibal Holocaust etc., but it still is meaninglessly disgusting.

All of that aside, the reviews implying that while such an openly MAGA protagonist should be allowed, alas, to inhabit a screen, letting her “get away with it”/“survive” strike me as slightly odd. First thought the below was from the Guardian, in which case I’d have shrugged it off, but this is Paste: “What might have at one point been conceived as a heckling right-wing attempt to troll leftists becomes a legitimately hazardous form of misinformation smuggled as a nonsensical horror flick that learns nothing from decades of found footage mistakes.”

In what clearly ties in with many of the discussions we have here, the above in itself strikes me as a “legitimately hazardous” argument to make. Anyway.

Adore the poster. Could win a minor ad award.
Was really looking forward to this film, but already exasperated, and I’m 9 minutes in.
So fed up with the ****ing Me Too narrative. To name the guy “Chad”, how very subtle. And yes, it’s very rude of the guy to say she’s not dressed well, but I’m definitely on the “dress up to the nines for the date” side of the debate. Anyway. It’s bizarre is what the way dating is portrayed virtually everywhere now is. Yes, there are pervs who share photos of their anatomy as a way of saying “hello”, but that’s no reason to portray all men as monsters. Maybe ladies with such clear antisocial tendencies shouldn’t date (and I readily include myself in that description). But I see nothing wrong with the objectively true statement that women in the 80s/millennials’ parents generation used to put more effort into their appearance (both men and women, might I add!). But no, we need that statement ridiculed as “mansplaining”. As one of my favourite British reporters quipped recently, imagine if we called every HR admin whine “shenagging and shecomplaining”. Would be a war zone.

As for the film’s general tone, like with the new Invisible Man, my instinct is to say, why don’t we do the same thing from a man’s perspective? A guy who lives with a charming female that takes one shower a month to save the planet and has other personal hygiene issues, hear him whine to his friends. But oh, wait… can’t do that, won’t get any funding. Disgusting.
To pitch thus film as a “tale of modern dating”, which is more or less what I’ve seen, is sort of like announcing the end to civilisation.

Watching tonight - Dark City. It bends a bunch of genres, sci-fi, fantasy, cyberpunk, film noir and whatever else. It evokes Nosferatu, seems like it's black and white, but isn't, doesn't make much sense but seems like it should in a dream like, nightmare way. It was directed by Alex Proyas and has reviews all over the spectrum.

A guy wakes up in a vile bathtub in The City, finds himself enmeshed in a grisly murder and tries to figure out what the heck is going on. It's also a city, where it's always night and which is also inhabited by strange, black coated, pale, water phobic aliens who can "Tune", which means that they can alter reality with their minds. The guy, John Murdock, mystifies the aliens because he can also tune. There's a sultry nightclub singer, who also is part of his life, even though he doesn't understand how she can be his wife or girlfriend.

There's also a detective, Bumstead, who is seeking Murdock, trying to understand what's going on without the benefit of being able to tune and a strange man with halting speech who also wants to find Murdock, for reasons that are obscure, probably to study him for his tuning ability.

It's one of the strangest, most non-rational movies I've ever seen, a favorite for those moments when you want to go somewhere completely outside the normal world, but in a place where somehow, everything is also somewhat familiar. Nobody knows what they are doing in this place, buildings change at regular intervals and everything is in the shadows. Nobody has a past, and everybody is being watched by the aliens, who want to understand humans. The visuals in this movie are completely strange and fascinating.

I'm gonna force myself through at least the first half of The Human Condition I. I started it years ago but I was so annoyed by all the inhumane actions that I shut it off after about 40 minutes. To this day I have difficulty watching movies that center around racism / stereotyping blending with inhumane actions. But I'm a critic at heart, and I'll watch practically anything, and I gotta get through the whole trilogy.

So if any of you believe in a God, in all seriousness, pray that I can get through this without a problem. I might have to watch one half of each movie every day for six days.

Nice to see appreciation for the Hornblower series. As a young lad of twelve when this series was just coming out Mr. Hornblower was one of my heroes. Was inspired to read some of the books by C. S. So Justin Benson of Benson and Moorhead not only pretty much plays himself/the Justin from The Endless, but sings House of the Rising Sun (which admittedly it was Moorhead that sang it in The Endless)? Still, this is some serious extended universe shit.

I've got one more Kubrick movie to watch before completing his filmography, and I saved it for last: Barry Lyndon. Just watched Eyes Wide Shut, a problematic but stylistic movie with a lot of deep mystery that focuses a lot on the concept of theme and interpretation, especially from a social standpoint. It almost feels like Kubrick's mocking us cinephiles for our habit of dissecting themes in movies.

God, this is really awful. I can tell immediately which is a rare one. ****ing hell. Incredibly corny.
I also think there’s something pretty deep and unhealthy about the immense multitude of films about kids/teenagers being “trapped” with overly controlling adults who answer questions on why they can’t have any freedom with “because you can’t”. That’s clearly some sort of fetish for middle-aged adults in creative industries who wish they could say that to their own kid. Disgusting.

What we would now call a rape scene does of course come off somewhat differently since I last saw this 15+ years ago. Seems a bit odd, but what I actively like is that that part is realistic, it’s exactly what would happen, a rape. We’re definitely losing the ability to show “what would really happen irl”, even for a moment. A fantastic film, anyway. Eastwood puts all the Brad Pitts out there to shame.

That’s exactly what the film is about. Quite explicit too for its time, not in the sense we use the word now, but rather in that the discussion around homosexuality is not at all coded. Great film noir on its own terms - imo anyway.

Will take a look at those autobiographies - sounds fascinating.

Excellent film, just my cup of tea. Colours, tone, everything. Might just become one of my favourite films. Also taking it strangely personally. What a charming pacifist father. I suppose us people who don’t mind violence really do live on another planet.

Bunny Lake is Missing (1965)

There's a podcast I listen to where a film critic on it has recommended this movie like 3 times over the past 3-4 years. It's kind of one of their default recommendations when they can't think of anything recently that has particularly stood out. I'm still waiting to see the price for it to drop on iTunes before I pick it up. But it is one of those movies that's gotten elevated to the state of, "consciously curious."

Damn. I must have missed it then.
In terms of paying for films, if it's a film I think I might particularly like, I often just use an app to keep an eye out for price drops, and just buy it when it gets close to the cost of a rental. This one doesn't seem like it's budging though.

Well, it’s a detective story, and in that respect, it’s Hitchcock-level great, if not better (there definitely were moments when I felt it surpassed any Hitchcock offering). But worth a watch either way. As someone who spent a lot of her life in boarding schools, I could also relate to the setting. I dare say you might like it.

I’m not a huge Olivier fan, either, but he’s relatively incidental here.

It’s an age-old debate. I didn’t mind boarding school once I was over 12. Before that, yes, it was hell, very restrictive, a 9 p.m. curfew inconceivable to someone who’d lived across 4 countries by then and could drive. But I do think it has its positives, independence, you manage your money, build your own social circle, and once you, as it were, crack the surveillance algorithm, you have all the freedom. I always looked older so could buy alcohol aged 15 in bars, that was nice.

All girls, yes, but we did sneak out and managed to get all our Romeo-n-Julieting in.

Everyone asks me left, right and centre whether I’d send my children to a boarding school, and I really don’t know. Not sure that I would, all in all, so I stand with your parents. Mine is a massive, legendary one that always pesters me for donations… I go to the odd event, but what can I say, I certainly wouldn’t send any kids there.

Gosh, how independent you were at 12+. We had all female teachers & no boys’ schools nearby so we were boy-mad. At age 15 I was like a child. In my final year we got a male teacher - art. Everyone went batshit though he wasn’t the least bit attractive. And it was eventually obvious that he was somewhat infatuated by one of my peers. Which I thought was so stupidly predictable.

Always had a lot of respect for Jeremy Saulnier. I’ve obviously seen this before, but recollections vague enough for it to be very enjoyable.

I tend to like Ozon, and Sophie Marceau is always great to watch. Let’s see what it’s about.

Not my cup of tea at all, though I loved The Father. Go figure.

Had been meaning to watch this for ages. Really outstanding stuff, more suspense than I’d seen in a long time. Amased by how much I enjoyed it. Even the ending is top notch.
