If they had cut the Kingsman stuff out, it would have been a passable film. The historical bits are not bad, the whole thing gives off slight Tenet vibes.
Dear me, that Rasputin scene with the cake, I am slain. That alone was “worth every penny”, to quote Fight Club. Rhys Ifans gets my vote.

I own both from a collectors edition I bought so very long ago (well over a decade) and I honestly think the theatrical cut is better than the Director’s cut. But I do think one needs to see both to appreciate it even more.

The additional footage in the Redux is interesting but hinders the way the theatrical version builds momentum. There was a Final Cut released in theatres a few years ago that's somewhere between both versions. I think it has the same pacing issues as the Redux, but it was still nice to see the movie on the big screen.

Quite enjoyable actually. Unexpected, though I love the original Force Majeure.
I’m watching them at the same time due to a variety of bizarre reasons, pausing one and carrying on with another. It’s certainly an option and a great combo.

Cousins of homophones. A polyseme is one word with two distinct (but usually etymologically related) meanings. Eg: bank as in Lloyds vs river bank. Etc.

Totally the wrong place for this, but:

- shed (at least 3 distinct meanings, so great example)
- dust (also 3 meanings, but more boring)
- wave
- arm
- book
- spring
- band
- letter
- left

There’s actually quite a few, but some are more independent of each other than others, and it’s those ones that I find most interesting.

A Separation is good in my view, but I prefer About Elly (that is outstanding). There is also The Past (2023) which I quite liked.

Many of his early films are among my favourites, but I don’t disagree that he may be a tad overrated now, as his last two films (this and Everybody Knows, the Cruz/Bardem one) are nothing like his early work. With Everybody Knows I felt he wasn’t at home with the Spanish context/setting (and why he would want to do that is inexplicable, like he woke up one morning fancying himself an Almodóvar).

But with A Hero I fear it’s more long-term than that. He seems to be losing a certain sharpness & descending into Dostoyevsky territory somewhat. That’s just my view, of course.

Essentially that Spielberg manages to give a film about the Holocaust a happy/Hollywood-esque ending, which is ridiculous/inappropriate and that it ignores everyone who was not saved. That’s a very crude summary though.

Cronenberg's Stereo, his debut film. I saw Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future from the 70's, and I kinda hated how dull it was. It was too reliant on the tricks it used at the beginning. Now I'm up on Stereo's grill, and I gotta say I'm kinda loving where the psychological stuff's going.

Interesting movie on Netflix - The Dig. As a fan of archeology, this is/was quite a story - 1939, an unqualified archeologist, doing a dig, discovers a ship, a 1400 year old Anglo-Saxon ship, part of a ceremonial burial on dry land, among a group of mysterious mounds in flat terrain in England. This movie is about as English as can be, with accents that are sometimes nearly undecipherable by this American. Starring Ralph Fiennes and Cary Mulligan, it's really pretty good for someone who likes archeology (me) and who can go with a slow, conversational movie done in muted tones and soft focus with a lot of drizzle. It's a fairly true story about the discovery of Sutton Hoo, a treasure trove of Anglo Saxon artifacts.

What the HELL made him think it was a good idea to stay with a bunch of kidnappers who tried to force him to rape a woman for their entertainment!? I don't care how mindwarped you are after several months in a sandy trap. If there's a one-percent chance of surrounding yourself around better people, even of you are still in a metaphorical prison called society, name me one person who would honestly rather spend the rest of their life being enslaved by people like that. Taking a half-star off the rating for that one.

Today I plan on watching The Last of the Vikings and Brennus, Enemy of Rome, all because they share a director featured on MST3K and I want to see a couple of his rare films. He is one of the least popular directors I've explored on Letterboxd, but he's got adventure movies up the attic.

Family & I set out to watch The Lord of the Rings, got confused about order, started with this (which seems to be chronologically ok?), and now I’m feeling it’s really not great & not even really LotR, but it’s too late.

This has been rather intriguing so far. Can’t help but compare it with Kindred, which has a similar vibe and themes and is also recent. Always find it odd when people don’t come up with original titles.

Whoa, is this your first time watching LOTR?

Technically, no. But I didn’t really add “rewatch”, because the last time was not long after it came out and I wasn’t really in the right mindset, hadn’t left much of an impression apart from Gollum. Not the case for the last 2.

So Elvis did a western. Flaming Star, a Don Siegel movie. Excellent since I needed to check more of his movies out (Dirty Harry was great).
