Big fan of A Better Tomorrow. Contains maybe the single coolest shot in the movies, and definitely one of the coolest performances. This would be a career best movie for most directors, but Woo turned out a few that are just as good (The Killer, Hard Boiled, Bullet in the Head). I even like the sequel, which is a lot dumber but has an all time shootout climax.


I saw A Touch of Zen in a theatre during a Chinese language cinema retrospective and had a great time. (Highly recommend seeing classic kung fu movies in a theatre if you get a chance.) This was before it was restored. I've since picked up the Criterion Blu-ray but haven't revisited it since (I blame the runtime). I've yet to see a bad movie from King Hu, but my favourite might be Legend of the Mountain, which marries the sense of movement from his kung fu pictures to a ghost story. It's also one of the best looking movies I've ever seen.

I have already seen The Killer. I liked it very much. I have noted down the other Woo films to.

Then it sounds like i need to add on Legend of the Mountain. A Touch of Zen drew me in with it’s nice stills.

Before the lock down, i was able to see a few older films in the local theater. They show about 2 new films every month. I saw Alien, The Wages of Fear, Apocalypse Now ( Final Cut, when that was released), Giant, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Tenebre. And i saw Orlando with Tilda Swinton.

Right before i moved here they had just had Scorsese month, with Taxi Driver at least.

Hard to tell which films they pick out, but i will keep an eye out of course.

Movie of the night - Stephen Spielberg's remake of West Side Story - An excellent production, an unknown but terrific cast of performers, with all of the energetic dance routines you might recall from the old one. I haven't seen a version of this for a long time, but I think it covers most of what I recall in this musical equivalent of Romeo and Juliet, set on the Upper West Side in NYC, composed by Leonard Bernstein.

Aside from the performances, I was amazed at how they recreated the 1958 setting. It did NOT have an stylized theatrical backdrop, but a detailed setting that seemed to show every detail of the setting, ads, signs, elevated trains, cars parked on the street and even food signs in neighborhood delis. Whoever did the digital animation on this got every detail. The setting (W 86th Street) is completely gentrified and high rise today, but the real shots were done in some part of across the river New Jersey that is convincingly 1957.

I'm definitely NOT a fan of musicals, and this one was pretty long, but if you are a musical fan, don't miss it.

I think it's a bit of a shame that all of the publicity around the sex being unsimulated was the main thing people talked about with the film.

While I don't think it's always the best acted and a few of the narratives don't quite complete their arcs, I do think that it's an interesting look at the connection between mental health, romance, identity, self-confidence, alienation from one's body, and sex.

The director's commentary (with Mitchell and the lead actress) was very interesting.

Yes. One of my favorite things about it was how often she did the right thing. Like when he pretends his car is broken down and keeps trying to get her to get out of her vehicle and she eventually just drives away---I was like "YES! THANK YOU!!!!".

Finally watching this. What a gorgeous film.
Wish I knew when it’s set. Absolutely no indication that I can see, and I’m not watching it alone. No phones, no laptops, no cars to tell. Must be deliberate.
As per wine, this is at least post-1995. Ah well.

Gorgeous indeed, but hell no, really ****ty plotting. Guadagnino appears to be obsessed with people falling into the pool, too.

In addition, at no point in the proceedings is the fish soup (Guadagnino is also obsessed with fish soup, which makes multiple appearances) actually the “ukha” soup, which looks nothing like it (you don’t put tomatoes into that, ever!) and isn’t even a Russian soup…? I’d say that last bit bothered me most.

Well, it really is plotless but well-made, good acting, Olivia is excellent as ever. Quite a nice watch. But nothing happens, is still quite boring.

I don’t disagree, he sure is no genius, but he does have a presence. I liked both films. A Bigger Splash is much better imo.

It ended up being a pretty straight forward drama film, for the biggest part of the movie ( Brad Pitt). i enjoyed the film for the most part.
