It’s very weird, and not in the Lynchian sense. The title card comes 22 minutes in, yes, I mean twenty two. As if, you know, you might forget what you’re watching. I’d always thought 127 Hours at 17 minutes in was as late as possible.

Some good elements from The Dead Don’t Die. Caleb Landry Jones as a film nerd. And all the lowe ratings on imdb. I guess a few people had their first Jarmusch experience.

I found it much less effective than the rest. Also if it really is someone’s first Jarmusch experience, I feel like it would be a shame. But that’s just my 2 cents.

Why on Earth wouldn’t you learn to speak proper French if you planned to study and live in Paris? Awful, awful accents. Yes, I’m an obnoxious non-compassionate human.
No one would compare this to Black Swan, I would hope, but to me the main problem is that this, like everything now, was turned into a teen film - which, in a way, is more realistic, because dancers vying for those types of contracts would indeed be around 18 years old. Yet there’s something about that which to me severely limits the stakes. You just don’t care about the teenage drama as much.
It could have been really good, but is emblematic of the awful shift seen all over the place: that towards “women supporting other women” and whatnot, which means no conflict, which means yawn. Even worse than I thought with that female friendship crap.

If you take the idealistic approach, of course for a person interested in seeing some of Jarmusch films, and deciding this will be his/her first film, it is a very untypical film from him. I agree they could have started elsewhere in his filmography.

My point was made out to those who went expecting to be entertained by a typical zombie flick, and then trashing the film for beeing boring. For those people i think this was their first Jarmusch film.

Oh, well, yes, I take most of that back, now that I’ve seen this. What a moron the author of that “review” there must be. Dear me. I don’t think the film gels together particularly well, but boring it is not.

I’m having the kind of day when one’s safest bet is to avoid moving from the sofa. Have slipped on the stairs of my own house while holding a laptop. Lucky not to be in hospital as I flew down the whole two flights of stairs.
Why are there so many new vampire films? How do they even get greenlit anymore?
This film is fantastic, though. So it’s allowed, I guess. :) But the question remains.

But he did say he wanted to make a fun movie. When you think about Paterson e.g. Which he directed 3 years earlier, it is such a wonderful film. I think it is fair to assume he had different motivations for the films.
So think it is a movie that can’t be taken to seriously.
I have not seen all his films though, so i am no expert. Broken Flowers is one favorite. And i own Night on Earth. I really enjoy the atmosphere he has created in those five cars, and Winona Ryder as a taxi driver is very charming.

So i do agree on your point that it is not as effective as some of his other films. The Dead Don’t Die needs to be put into perspective, otherwise my comment on it can give an impression i did not intend.

This is my favourite Woo but he has a few others that are serious contenders for the greatest action movie of all time: Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow and Bullet in the Head. Highly recommend all of those if you haven't seen them yet.

And while it's a lot dumber than the above movies, A Better Tomorrow Part II has a tremendous climactic action sequence (including a confrontation between Chow and a sunglasses-wearing killer that sum up the heroic bloodshed genre in a beautifully succinct way). And of course the notorious fried rice scene.

And while I haven't seen Broken Arrow, his other Hollywood films have very good action, even if Face/Off is the only one I'd call essential.

Thank you Rockatansky. I have not seen any other of his older films. I just finished The Killer. Without being aware if it, i had already seen a string of five films, since i have seen his films from Hard Target up to Windtalkers.( Not counting tv movies on imdb)
I am gonna check out the titles you mentioned for sure.

I could have mentioned many things from The Killer, but i definitely understand right away why it is an action classic. Dumbo and Mickey Mouse, Visual Style, action choreography. The good movies always take into account all the elements.

Something, at least, is 18+. Thank god for that.
Stylistically it had promise, and Anya Taylor-Joy is a joy to watch, heh, but it’s like it couldn’t decide if it’s Me Too or a devious-whore type film. Quite a few corny/cringeworthy moments as well. The sort of thing one might call “self-serious”. Nah. For all the hard work, it doesn’t succeed at being giallo.

I just love this movie, which I've seen probably 20 times. Never get tired of it. What makes it work is the relationship between Ripley and Newt: a mother who has lost a daughter, a daughter who has lost a mother, and they find each other. It also has two climaxes, with the second one being a huge surprise the first time I watched it.

That is correct Rockatansky. In the process, the kid end up impressing the whole village, and his father. Because he had made a promise not to tell who gave him the stolen wallet.
The final film is set in a winter landscape, something that suits my personal style pretty well. There is of course Shogun Assassin.

I was disappointed. Kristen Stewart was good at mimicking Diana's poses, but not much else. The focus of the movie seemed much too short for a story that went on with so much publicity for a bunch of years, hardly scratched the surface of the celebrity adoration and didn't get close to dealing with just how dysfunctional the family was/is. If you didn't know what had happened, you'd think the "before times" was short. If you didn't already know what followed, you wouldn't even know how the real story ended. All you'd know is that she was unhappy in her royal role.

I don’t disagree. It’s no Coppola, but I do think on a surface level it portrays her anxiety well. A particular anxiety to do with marrying into anything that considers itself bigger than you. Anyway, I took it to be a kind of psychodrama about marriage and felt that the fact it doesn’t end with/reference her death is rather refreshing. What particularly stands out is Charles’ quote about bees working hard to bring her breakfast (the real thing, apparently). But no, I’m not planning to rewatch it.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/cNTNZd0JBPI/mqdefault.jpg
A very effective and original film. But I do think the premise is a bit far-fetched (that someone would stay under the circumstances). I think anyone would be out the door the moment a leash is mentioned, unless he retains some memory of having been there before on a subconscious level and that makes him a tad less distrustful - which is not the impression I get. Also reminds me of the wind-up monkey in The Phantom of the Opera. Scared the **** out of me at some point.
Memorable great stuff, overall.
Damian Mc Carthy is definitely on my radar now - and no, that’s not a typo - what a spelling.

Not a huge fan of old horror (Psycho, which I interpret as such, is one notable exception), largely as I feel it fails at the basic job of disturbing, but it’s still quite enjoyable as entertainment.
Interesting just how meta this film is - at the time when the meta era was less than 10 years into its existence.

Diana I would posit was chiefly unhappy because her husband was unfaithful. Her marriage was “rather crowded” to quote her directly. She did feel very pressured by the rôle she was playing, but what made the situation much worse was her lack of support from Charles who loved another woman. She had to have felt so very lonely.

Diana was a perfectly happy young woman until she married a man who would not & could not be faithful to her. She was so besotted with Charles & to find out that his ex Camilla was still very much a part of his life devastated her. As it would any woman. Everything would have been fine for this royal couple if Charles hadn’t betrayed her.

BTW, she clearly said in some of the honeymoon footage in Scotland that she never ate breakfast.

Have seen this before, but the memory is vague enough to warrant another watch.

No amount of money would make me watch a Vincent Price movie.

Indeed. And in this regard I think the film does quite a good job.

>>There's plenty written about how Diana played the infidelity game too, so she's not just the wounded innocent. What I do think is and was clear was that, being privileged, protected and naive, she would have deserved at least as much preparation for the royal life as we'd give someone else in a different stressful job. Being Charles's wife in the royal family was as much of a job as being a cop or a bricklayer, except that she got no training. It was all rose pedals, nice clothes and photographers. Whoever cheated on who first, under the withering gaze of the queen and the press, it's not surprising that she couldn't cope and bailed out. I don't think I could have lasted that long, but I'd hope to avoid the fatal car crash.

So much of that was missing in the movie that I felt cheated. Too many photogenic or enigmatic poses, not enough plot.

I don’t see infidelity as a “game”, but, whatever. And I didn’t describe her as the “wounded innocent”. No question she was unfaithful to Charles during the decline of her marriage. Specifically, with James Hewitt. When one is not loved one goes elsewhere in some cases.

Diana was Lady Diana Spencer, but I hardly see that as preparation for royal life. Working as a nanny does not prepare one for being a future Queen of England.

Comparing Diana to a “bricklayer” is a stretch to put it mildly.

What I do think is and was clear was that, being privileged, protected and naive, she would have deserved at least as much preparation for the royal life as we'd give someone else in a different stressful job. There are many bad ones (but then, the majority of films are bad I guess). My issue with vampire films in general is the sense that there are “rules”; that they have to be done a certain way. Innovative ones like A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night or Only Lovers Left Alive fare much better, in my opinion.

I like movie theatres. Not sure why, but I do. Well, I am very apprehensive about KS in this role, but a competent person is in charge, so I’m prepared to be impressed.

Anthony Lane, the well-respected British movie critic for The New Yorker, gives Spencer a very good review. Says it is way more credible than The Crown (which he may not watch more of). Interesting as I never believed in The Crown at all & bailed out almost immediately

Not seen it yet, but the oddest thing about Spencer to me is that Stewart is small & slight & Diana wasn’t. I can totally see the very tall Debicki as her in The Crown. Not a single reviewer has mentioned this so it must not be an issue.

I’ll confess I don’t think it is an issue, camera angles and such really minimise such inconsistencies, but skill-wise I still think Debicki would do a better job as she seems to slay everything she does (though I didn’t get that far into The Crown, so can’t say).

To me, it feels like a straight-up drama. I tend to like all Spanish films, and it is good, but hasn’t left as much of an impression as I’d have expected. But glad I watched it, really like the look of it and the grey-pink colours.

Thing is, I don’t believe any restaurant anywhere would say “We don’t do X dish just for one person”. I just don’t buy that. “Dish X is large” - yes, but that - no way.
Very odd film. Didn’t like at all. The concept of a child dying while/because parents/adults are having sex is fairly compelling, but Antichrist did it better.

You've got me there. I know Mature and Grable did Song of the Islands (1942) and Wabash Avenue (1950), which were both musicals; but off the top of my head I can't think of a noir that they stared in. I'll have to look around some more tomorrow.

It’s very good, but The Deal (2003) is better-known and even better. I so love all of them. And agreed, Sheen is a better Blair than Blair. The Deal has a scene where he comes into the office he would share with Brown and says, “I’m Tony!” with psychopathic positivity. One of my favourite scenes ever.

Yes, it was, there is something to it. It’s memorable. But not quite my cup of tea. Also as a general note, I’m longing to see a film where such a nice suburban mummy actually takes the drug dealer’s money and does have sex with him, whether out of fear or by choice (preferably choice). That would be original in terms of human psychology: she seemed all sweet and then she did that. A bit like Gallo’s Buffalo 66. My only tiny criticism of the actual film would be that it wasn’t at all grounded why randomly started saying “Tito” or whatever the name was. I mean, yes, children can be a bit random. But it’s kind of very on the nose after she says not to say it. Could have achieved the same effect if they just started walking around saying “there’s a man in our house with lots of white powder!”

I don’t disagree with that; it can be read that way. Generally, I wouldn’t even say I like Aster, I like Hereditary. I don’t see that sort of thing as an “inconsistency” anyway; it’s probably deliberate, in line with how Annie never loved that child, wanted (and tried ceaselessly) to abort him, maybe he was sired by a lover. Prenatal resentment, yadda yadda, makes it easier for the demon to pounce on him. I agree that it is not ideal, but not really a problem for me in this context.

I do admit it’s a valid and amusing criticism.

It's weird to me that this would be seen as a criticism of this film. Kids with different coloring from their family already have to put up with a lot of weird racism or comments about being "illegitimate". Now we're saying it's unrealistic that they . . . exist?

I think that films like that do exist, but those are films where the main character is more like a villain. This film was more focused on the idea of someone who is casually pushed around by a lot of people in her life and gets taken to a point where she has to fight back. She just wants this dangerous stranger out of her life with as little risk to herself and her child as possible, and I think that's a really realistic emotional viewpoint.

I mean, having sex with someone out of fear is just rape. And I didn't mind that the character in this film wasn't actually raped. And if she did have sex with him out of choice that would be her trying to seduce or play him, and that's a really dangerous game to play, and one that could endanger her child.

I know.

I'm just pointing out that kids having features, coloring, hair texture, etc that doesn't match the dominant racial/ethnic presentation of their parents is not at all uncommon and remarking about it as if it's a weird thing just adds to some not very nice comments that are directed at kids who don't "match" their parents.

I know I'm kind of a killjoy about stuff like this, but it's the kind of "harmless/amusing" observation that feeds into bullying.

I actually thought that both kids being believable as their children, and yet being a little different looking was an interesting dynamic.

I mean, you're comparing real life, something that is by its very nature completely natural and random, versus a specific, artificial narrative made up of a countless number of conscious creative choices on the part of the filmmakers, so something existing or being possible in real life doesn't automatically justify its existence in a movie.

What you're saying applies far more to the cranio-facial syndrome of the daughter than to a child whose coloring is a bit darker than his parents.

A lot of movie kids don't look a whole lot like their parents. Wolff looks enough like Byrne that it didn't seem all that outlandish.

Also, I thought that Wolff acted the heck out of his part and was really excellent in the role. If casting a strong actor meant casting someone who looked a little less like what we imagine a Byrne-Collette baby would look like, I'm fine with it.

Love Naked and there's a really great commentary out there with Leigh and Thewlis.

Ditto. So sad that Cartlidge died young.

Did you ever watch True Blood on hbo? For the longest time I thought it such a clever original show.

I did love it. FGS, Alexander S. was in it for one thing!

I didn’t bail out until the werewolves were rampant. Didn’t like Joe what’s his-face either. Way too many subplots.

Well, it’s not top-tier television, for sure. But was fun at the time.

The Skarsgård family will light up anything.

Don’t remember the rampant werewolves. I guess the mind stores the best bits. The beginning was good.
