Finally getting around to Open Your Eyes.
Over 20 years too late.
When I first heard of it, about w he the remake Vanilla Sky came out, I wanted to watch the original first. Time passes and I forget about it periodically, only to be reminded it still needs to be watched. I just found it on Prime so I’m all out of excuses.

Big fan of Vanilla Sky. When i first saw it, i had no idea it was a remake. It was before my internet days. So i liked the originality of the film. I have had it that way with some films. I watched them maby 15 years before i knew about the original. The films The Vanishing (1993) and Breathless (1983) are the once i am thinking about. Of course i have seen Spoorloos and A Bout De Souffle later, and really like them. I guess the remakes worked well for me, since i had no idea about the older films etc.
I should watch Open your Eyes again, though.

Out tonight. We actually ate out, at r House and took in a sparsely populated movie at the Charles - The Green Knight. It has a talking fox, silent naked giants and a befuddling plot line and a big, scary green knight. It really is a cool movie.
In a weird era, the Middle Ages, nothing is weirder than Gawain and the Green Knight. The Green Knight is a huge guy, all green with a green horse, awesomely threatening. Gawain, one of King Arthur's knights, is ambitious and wants to climb the status ladder. He challenges Greeny, allow one sword hit and then a year and a day later, the Green Knight can do the same to Gawain. Gawain beheads Greenie, but Greenie just picks up his head and puts it back on, and walks away. Gawain knows that he's on the hook for next year and has no idea how to put his own head back on.
How does Gawain spend the year? Fall in love? How does the aging King Arthur feel about all of this? It's a very complicated plot that at least follows some of the original epic poem by an unknown author. I like all this medieval weirdness and the movie version does it pretty well. The movie has excellent imagery, compelling characters and, such a weird plot line, just the thing for middle ages fans.

I need a hyphen in there.
Everything looks like a video game in this film so far.
I don’t know what it is, but the sacrifice-yourself approach to endings is beginning to exhaust me. Reminiscent of Stowaway, this thing, and not in a good way.

In 2 hours. Let’s see what all the fuss is about.
I mean, I thought it was quite a good movie, really engaging and the French ambiance is well-grounded. Honestly don’t think AK’s criticism makes much sense at all, as I anticipated the character to be much more nefarious, based on all the fuss.

I saw the movie soon after it was released, and really enjoyed it. It was unique and innovative. The rumor started after the JFK assassination (11/1963) that Sinatra pulled the film from viewing in deference to Kennedy. But that wasn't true, although it made a nice story.
The 2004 adaption was well acted, but didn't have the punch of the '62 original. Also the name "Manchurian" no longer fit. In the original the brainwashed character had been a Korean War veteran (Manchuria). But in the remake the Korean War was too distant, so they had to use the title "Manchurian" as the name of an evil multinational corporation. Hey, why couldn't they have called it The Googlian Candidate?..:D

I was curious to see the movie that inspired the Dean Koontz's Jane Hawk novels which comprise five books in the series. In it, Jane Hawk, a rogue F.B.I. agent, has to unravel a conspiracy which surrounds individuals who are injected with nanomachines that take over their minds. Awesome series.

I suppose “enjoy” is a flippant word, but I like most of them. There’s always exceptions, as with anything.
Yes, I really liked Victoria. Almost didn’t watch it, which would have been a huge loss. I’m usually not a fan of anything that’s a “single take”, but this was good, really unusual and memorable, been ages but I remember every bit of it.
I think I’ve seen Cría cuervos, but a really long time ago. Might revisit.
One of my Spanish favourites is the rather morbid Tesis (1996). Also adore Wild Tales (2014). Don’t know how “Spanish” it actually is, but Everybody Knows (2018) is also up there with the best in my view.

My assessment is very much the same: some are insufferable, heh, but I like most. I admit he is not for everyone. One of my most traumatic film-related experiences is the misguided decision to show my mother The Skin I Live In. Discovered many truths about myself, including that I was a schizophrenic sadist.
…I still like the film…

That was a good movie. Banderas has made some corkers, but, once in a while, he finds a decent script.

I adore it. It’s probably the best horror film (and one of the best generally) I’ve seen in my life. I am in a-w-e.
Totally didn’t expect it, it’s pretty insane, actually. Agree with the critical ecstasy around the sound design; this is the first time in fifteen-odd years that I flinched at what can be called a “jump scare”, and all done via sound, too.

Of all the Hitchcock films i have seen, i would say Shadow of a Doubt,Stage Fright and The Trouble With Harry all have some similarities. Stage Fright certainly closest to compare, with a young female lead solving a crime. There is also the comedic elements in this film, with Hume Cronyns character.
In The Trouble With Harry, the comedic element holds much of the identity of the film, even though we have a dead body as a centre of the story. So mixing these two elements humor and suspense workes well for these films. Maby there is something in that, to combine these genres successfully. To bring in dark comedy.
Rebecca and Shadow of a Doubt is the two earliest films i have seen of Hitchcock, and i still have many films i have not seen. So this is only my impression of what makes this film different from other Hitchcock films. Or what makes it a good film.
Maby more relevant is the trick to take the criminal, and put him into a safe, innocent suburban community, with gullible citizen. Charlie Oakley almost rubbing his hands together with a smile, as he lay his plans for a new start a new life there. Unlike the film The Night of the Hunter, we are not fully made aware of the threath that Charlie is presented. But there is little doubt about that later in the film. At least from what i remember from the storyline of The Night of the Hunter.
And of course everyone is clueless about what is going on, lining up for a battle of wits.
I would certainly like to know more about his films made before 1940.
Why Hitchcock thought it was his favorite film, i dont know. The interview was done by Truffaut. There is alot of material on this on Youtube. Looks like they have been talking for hours.

Hitchcock seems not to have wanted to be tied down by indicating which of his pictures was his favorite, although he was quoted in such statements many times (he loved the misleading jest). But it's safe to say that Shadow of a Doubt was certainly ONE of his favorites. My guess is that he liked the rather twisted contrast between Uncle Charlie's bleak murders and the picturesque small town Americana locale of Santa Rosa, Calif. He worked on the screenplay extensively with Thornton Wilder, author of the play Our Town.
I also suspect that Hitchcock simply fell in love with the coastal Central California area. Hitchcock had purchased a ranch in the hills of Scotts Valley, just north of Santa Cruz. He was to do 3 famous films in towns withing 50 miles of each other in that area: Shadow of a Doubt (Santa Rosa), Vertigo (San Francisco), and The Birds (Bodega Bay).
I've always loved the film. The only detraction for me was the casting of Macdonald Carey as the detective. I just couldn't see Theresa Wright and he together.
An interesting point is that to my knowledge Shadow of a Doubt is the only other classic Hitchcock film in which the villain is the main character. The other is Psycho.
I am currently back home seeing my Mum and we are just about to watch The Wizard of Oz (1939). We plan to follow that with Green Room (2015), which is a little bit of a contrast, I know. I haven't seen the latter before though.

Driver is very good, and like Zero Dark Thirty, I like the way movie suggests the hero was "radicalized" by 9/11 in their own way. I wish the flashbacks were less awkwardly realized, but not a dealbreaker.

Re-watching an old favorite - John Carpenter's The Fog (NOT the remake). It's a small town in Northern California with a lighthouse perched up on a cliff. It has a dark secret from a century ago that led to a ship wrecked on the rocks....the sailors perished. They're back and they're PO'd.
The cool thing about this movie is how somber it is and how the plot is mostly driven by sound effects and environmental sounds. Dialog is minimal but every media snippet or truck sound or clinking glass or barking dog, or ringing phone, not to mention the two foghorns in the town are telling the spooky story of Spivey Point. The climax, with its pulsing sound effects and tympani like single note tones drives your pulse until the spooks are gone.
The very minimal music consists of piano chords played by Carpenter himself, meshing with the foghorns and occasional backgrounds of soft jazz, playing from a radio. It stars scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, Hal Holbrook and Carpenter's wife at that time, Adrienne Barbeau. Horror movies often don't get much credit, but this one is like a minimalist musical composition, rendered in images.

That’s pretty much how I felt. The flashbacks were plain bizarre, which is a bit jarring as it’s a skilfully made film overall. But yeah, Driver keeps it going. I much prefer Zero Dark Thirty, not because it’s more “actiony”, but because there’s something riveting about the character.

I am not sure which version i actually saw. But they released a cut down version, which probably was to further prevent any solutions to appear to people. There was certainly enough going on at the school to add on the mystery/meaning in the film.

I really liked this movie. Thought they made a very believable couple. My only tiny quibble was Lesley Manville as the ogre mother. Not saying a Brit can’t play a role like this, but I was slightly taken aback to see her in the role. And I am a huge fan of hers.

Interesting! I’m loving Lesley, and I’ve come to like the film much more as it’s progressed. I see how it jars a bit, but she’s spectacular. It is a good film, and Lane and Costner are both fantastic. I think it started off a tad too melodramatic for my liking, but certainly got better.
The protagonist pairing is really unusual and they do fit together.
Holy hell, I take back all my reservations. Lesley Manville absolutely carries this.

I think with me, this universally accepted flow chart response is a good rule of thumb:
Did yn post something?
Yes > it's 90% likely to not be serious.
No > yn has not yet figured a way to reply non-seriously and will do so momentarily.
Yes > 10% of the time yn gave up trying to find something silly to post, but felt the post still deserves a reply and concedes to being serious. In protest. If it must be serious, then yn will try to post the seriousness as ridiculous as ynly possible.
Something like that.

Each of whom became the sole winner of one of the last deadly quests. Once again find themselves trapped. This time however more cruel and ruthless challenges await them. To survive the participants will have to solve this ruthless and cunning puzzle. I'll write here about my impressions after I watch it.

One of my favorite films of all time.
The author, Mark Singer was a model in NYC but couldn't fit in, didn't like the lifestyle. He wanted to leave it all and become a homeless, he was interested in those people that he saw on the streets.
He eventually did that, went living underground, to the subway tunnels and got the idea of making a film, make cash, and take that community out of there. The film was made with the help of everyone living there and some investors who agreed to give him total creative freedom.
He managed to convince DJ Shadow, the famous NYC DJ Shadow to not only let his music's be in the documentary film, something he never agreed on any other film to that day, but I believe he made the songs. There's a new release, the director visit the tunnels years later, you can find on YouTube some parts.
There's many interesting cats in that documentary, the one that caught my attention above all others was Ronnie (https://tinyurl.com/RonnieDarkDays), his the type of individuals I think NYC had during that time, the charisma, the entire package.

It is quite good. Dear father was annoyed by the lack of verisimilitude re: the real Penkovsky’s character, whatever that means, but as a narrative it gels together very well indeed. BC gives it his all.
And of course, nothing beats South Ken.

Turned out to be a poor choice. It's not really a good noir. Ida Lupino did well enough, but she looked mousey. Richard Widmark showed some range, but --probably at the director's or studio's insistence-- he inserted a little of the maniacal jeering laughter that he had become so famous for as the sociopath Tommy Udo in Kiss of Death (1947). A little of that goes a long way. Here it was more than a little...:( Cornel Wilde was really best in swashbucklers.

Halfway through the movie I found on Pluto TV, The Apartment. I'm diverging from my Orson Welles adventure to get this out of the way before it's taken off. It's not quite as good as Double Indemnity, but the professionalism with which the movie's directed along with the perfect acting make it so much better. Also, Mrs. McDougal, who Lemmon brings home, is a lot like a younger Mrs. Dupcheck,
I started this after The Awful Dr. Orloff. My next Jesus Franco films might be The Secret of Dr. Orloff, Dark Mission and Killer Barbys. And after two more Orson Welles movies, I'll be back on Wilder and then shoot for several Wes Craven movies I haven't seen.
If you're curious about the schedule, I'll explain some things after that when I start a possible thread about my ever-changing top movies. But that won't happen after Raul and Sean are done with theirs.
