Hey! great to see another fan of old movies here at Movie Forums. I love old films and that's what I mostly watch. I haven't seen I Was An American Spy, but it sounds interesting from your write-up. I've seen Ann Dvorak in other movies, but only when she was at the start of her career. I don't think I've ever seen her in a 1950s movie. I'll have to watch this one.

I haven't seen too many 2019 films yet. Bliss is one of the five 3.5/5 I've given to them but I consider it slightly better than the others (the other are Doctor Sleep, Monos, Captive State and Us). I haven't been too impressed by that year yet.

I liked it a fair bit more than The Witch. I mean, it was so wonderfully over the top and I loved the set design and the look of the whole thing. I thought it was incredibly funny and I liked the mythology theme that it had going, vague though it was.

Parasite is on my watchlist and so is Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I haven't yet felt a massive urge to push them on top of it, though. The rest of those don't seem too interesting to me.

Those are both solid.

I felt like The Farewell was so solid from a character development and emotional point of view. It's that rare, PG-rated film that's for adults. I really like Awkwafina, but I thought that the whole cast really sold the family dynamic. It's certainly underseen, in my opinion.

If you ever end up watching Dolemite, My Name is Dolemite is an essential companion piece.

Agreed that it is bizarre and that I can totally see people having really different responses to it.

That said, I loved it.

Form the very early shot where she (SPOILERS! Cricket don't read if you didn't watch it yet!)sees herself getting out of the car I was like "Yes."

I thought that it managed to be strange but still hold on to a central theme and character arc. I think that York's central performance is also really strong.

I think that this film is excellent. The thing that surprised me most was the distinct, dark humor of certain sequences, but the whole film is wonderfully acted and crafted.
Yay, you watched it! I agree that there’s often an element of satire in South Korean cinema. I don’t remember much of that in The Handmaiden, except towards the end when the uncle tortures Fujiwara*The most darkly comic South Korean film by far that I’ve seen is Okja, though it’s also sad.

I honestly wouldn't have noticed (it was the scene where they are having sex in the hotel room and she has him take off his pants) if it weren't for the way that the censoring "blob" suddenly vanished. They basically hovered a black blotch over his crotch--at first I just assumed they'd deliberately kept him in shadow since his character is a teenager--but then when he zips up his pants the blotch abruptly disappears. The thing that made it the most strange was that all of the female nudity remained intact (though I do know there's often a double standard between male and female nudity).

I wasn't mad about it (in the sense that seeing nudity in that moment isn't important because the important part is what Pauline sees), but just confused. There was another time that I watched a film that had been absurdly overdubbed to eliminate a lot of the profanity (leading to a hilarious moment where a "gangster" yelled "WHAT THE HECK?!" when his mouth was clearly saying something else).

My thought was that maybe Amazon was buying copies of the films from a distributor who was doing these edits?

The blob disappearing caught my eye, and then I felt like a total perv as I rewound the movie to rewatch the part ("Don't mind me--just going to scrutinize this gentleman's crotch for a second"). I think that I noticed because his pants are a brown color and the blotch is black. Once he zips the pants, the blotch hovers for a moment before vanishing, which is what I think caught my eye because the color suddenly changes black-to-brown.

Loved it Doc, but I realize Sandler's not for everybody, so don't know if I should recommend or not.

Tonight, it's a movie with lineage - The Thing. It started back in 1939 with Campbell's story, Who Goes There, about a shape-shifting extrerrestrial invading a remote antarctic outpost. Then in 1951, it was The Thing From Another World, this time in the Arctic, a BW classic with minimal FX and a rubber suited alien. Tonight, it's a 1982 John Carpenter classic, The Thing, back in the Antarctic and a shape shifter and better FX. It was done again in 2005 (not so great). It's been a comic, a computer game, a board game, a radio show (!). It inspired episodes of The X Files and Deep Space Nine.

It's frigid paranoia, you never know who might be the next thing and each time you burn one of them with a flame thrower, the outpost gets smaller. It's 20 below outside and getting dark, the wind is picking up and it just keeps getting grimmer. The slow, somber music really helps. It's Carpenter at his best, far better than most movies of its type.
