I'm watching the shorter version first. I've seen a few longer in one sitting (Lawrence of Arabia, Gone With the Wind, Return of the King, Schindler's List, The Green Mile, Magnolia) so I'm not averse to that. I just thought I'd be able to process it better if I watched the second half alert and not tired like I was last night.

I never spent more than 2 hours in one sitting because I need to go to the bathroom. :)

In one day the most I have watched were Fanny and Alexander (5 hours and 15 minutes), Once Upon a Time in America (3 hours) and Barefoot Gen (1 hour and half). I was a bit dizzy at the end of the day.

My Neighbor Totoro

My third Miyazaki. I hope it's better than Kiki and Spirited Away.

If you didn't like those two you probably will not like this one.

Oh of course I liked them. But neither were great, for me. They're both in my 'very good films' category (Spirited Away I'd rate 8/10, while I'd give Kiki a slightly lower rating). I haven't seen Kiki in ages, and for years I considered it a guilty pleasure of mine, but I do not plan to rewatch it simply because I enjoyed it so much during the time I first saw it.

I saw Spirited Away less than a week ago for the first time, and although I didn't love every scene or every character - which for me is quite often the case with animated movies - I think it is better than Kiki because it is more unique. Its dreamlike atmosphere is mesmerizing. I have to admit though that whilst watching it, at some parts I had mixed feelings about the movie. But it's one of those movies you appreciate more after you have seen it. And who knows, probably I'll love it after another viewing.

But I hope My Neighbor Totoro will be better than both, and hopefully I'll include it in my 'great movies' category, that is 9/10 or higher.

Guaporense
07-04-13, 05:10 PM
Did you watch them dubbed? Because the dubb of Kiki destroyed the dialogue, Spirited Away was less damaged but serious appreciation requires viewing in the original language.

Also, I would add that Kiki cannot be a guilty pleasure since it is critically praised in Japan (rated as one of their top 100 fillms of all time) and a favorite among animation fans, one cannot characterize it as a guilty pleasure.

Finally, from my point of view, Spirited Away became a full blown masterpiece in the first 30 minutes on my first watch and by the end of it's 125 minutes it already was my favorite movie of all time. It's a stellar combination of good taste, elegance, complexity, beauty and power. But every man to his taste.

Try to watch his more mature works, Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke, for a different shade of the same director.

No, I hate dubbing. It's one of the things that I hate the most when it comes to films.

Well, Kiki was a guilty pleasure for me, because I watched it by chance when I was about 12 or 13, because my then 4-year-old sister was watching it, otherwise I probably wouldn't have. And the main character was a girl, so I considered it a guilty pleasure at the time. Back then I had no idea that the movie was praised, or who Miyazaki was.

And I will watch all of them. Just taking it one step at a time.

I loved it. Fellini turned his memories into a grotesque carnival and I really connected with its portrait of adolescence; the naive, obsessive quest for romantic idealism. La Dolce Vita is still my favorite, though.

Have you seem Castle of Cagliostro? Anyway you haven't experienced what is generally regarded as his best work, which is his manga (http://www.amazon.com/Nausica%C3%A4-Valley-Wind-Box-Set/dp/1421550644/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373853797&sr=8-1&keywords=nausicaa).

I haven't! I thought Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind as his first feature film! Is The Castle of Cagliostro any good? It seems part of some kind of series, so maybe I should check some other pictures first?

I'm not really into manga (although I like all kinds of comic books, so I guess I could probably like it if I started reading some). Maybe I'll read his work one day, but I don't think it's going to happen in the near future.

I really enjoyed Castle in the Sky by the way. I just finished it. I consider it as one of the strongest of the 'middle bracket' (in terms of quality according to me) of his filmography.

Nausicaa was his second feature length film. The Castle of Cagliostro was voted by a poll of anime critics as the best anime movie of all time in 2010 (Nausicaa 2nd, Totoro, 3rd).

I'm not really into manga (although I like all kinds of comic books, so I guess I could probably like it if I started reading some). Maybe I'll read his work one day, but I don't think it's going to happen in the near future.

Yeah, its a bit more costly reading a 1200 page book than watching a 2 hour long movie. But it can be more rewarding.

Really? Wow. I recorded it and then was gutted when I saw that it was Anime. I tried watching it but only got about 10 minutes in, if that. Hated the look of it. :( It's a shame, because, as with Grave Of The Fireflies, it sounded like it could be a good film.

After watching both Miller's Crossing and Donnie Brasco I think tonight I might finally watch Good Will Hunting properly. I've caught chunks of it quite a few times, including the "how do you like them apples?" scene at least 3 times somehow, but never seen it from start to finish.

Me too; I'm really happy to hear he's sticking with most of the main cast from Silver Linings as well, most of them had best ever performances in it IMO. And Bale's back for a second collaboration! That's cool. I'm also curious to see Louis C.K. in a big film, as I think I've only seen him in The Invention Of Lying (I barely recognized him!) I think he'll work well in it.

Anyways, I didn't get to watch Huckabees last night (my girlfriend insisted we watch She's The Man, which I've watched quite a few times for some reason,) so I'll probably give it another go tonight. :dizzy:

I wouldn't say that, but it's a very beautiful movie (literally) and it has one of my top 3 favorite musical pieces ever in it. i'm referring to the very famous 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' sequence by Marilyn Monroe of course.
I know it's a cliché, but the way she nailed that scene is BREATHTAKING. Absolute cinema gold.

I agree with Honeykid though. It's not the best film I've watched from her so far. I liked Some Like It Hot even better, for instance. I still have to see some of her classics, such as The Seven Year Itch.

I've been trying to watch more anime films recently, because the list of anime films I've watched is pretty low, which includes a few of Hayao Miyazaki's other pieces, but it's been a long time since I've watched a few of them, like Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service. I've watched Ponyo quite a few times, though. :yup:

Other films I can think of are The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and The Sky Crawlers which I watched a few days ago (and loved,) and a few based on television series, like Inuyasha, and of course, Pokemon.

If anyone has any favorites, throw them my way!

http://kaganof.com/kagablog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/mannmarty.jpg

One of the two films that won the Palm D'Or and the Best Picture Oscar. I'm curious! I liked the other one, which is of course The Lost Weekend.

I need to see more of Almodovar's films. This one is on the '90s list and seems pretty interesting, so I'm watching it.

It's the best superhero film ever made. An opinion that I share with Roger Ebert.

I rented these two, Perfect Blue, and Porco Rosso. I'll get to at least one of these before I go to bed.

Other Miyazaki's films and PMMM (a 12 episode tv series later compiled into a 2-part 4 hour film).

yeah,I can see why some people might consider it the best superhero film.I really manages to create the atmosphere, the story isn't so bad either but the film and the characters are not very consistent, some films just flow and well,I don't think thta this one does.It is more of my personal favorite but objectively,I'd say that it's maybe just a little above average.

There is no such thing as talking about the quality of a film objectively since film is art not exact science. If it works, it works. No matter if it appears badly made from a certain point of view. Watchmen is good because it is an adaptation of what is regarded by many as the greatest western comic book ever made and so it has a certain literary quality that is lacking in other superhero films.

I don't want to start the same "can art be rated obejctively " discussion because you saying that Watchmen is good is incorrect as it may be awful to others.
I believe that critics basically sum up the quality of the film objectively and well,Watchem isn't very praised, despite Ebert giving it a maximum score.

I was VERY impressed with Stardust Memories yesterday. It was one of the best films I'd seen in a long time.
I also watched Woody Allen: A Documentary (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2397619/?ref_=sr_2) last night on the recommendation of Honeykid (thanks for that!).
Allen is certainly one of the best and most interesting film makers of all time for me, so I'm watching three of his films that I haven't seen yet tonight! Two of "his early funny ones" and one of his '90s films.

I myself thought it was Lynch's weakest film. But I know Mr Minio LOVES it, and says it is his favorite of Lynch's films. I just could not wrap my brain around it at all. And this is coming from a guy who LOVES Eraserhead. I hope you like it. :)
