I connect with the prevalent theme of God's Lonely man. Isolation is a very familiar feeling to me. Or at least it was when I was younger. The feeling and memories are still there though. Combine that with the acting of De Niro, Foster Keitel, and Shepard plus the brilliant direction of Martin Scorsese this is my all time favorite movie. A macho and sometimes violent film about one man alone in a sea of filth.
