It's getting near the time when I have to order the new Tattymobile and because we are in TOUGH. ECONOMIC. TIMES. I'm downsizing. Kinda. :p
I've narrowed it down to these:
The Alfa Romeo Mito Veloce
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/greenspagbol/car_photo_300865_7.jpg
The Ford Fiesta Zetec S
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/greenspagbol/2009-Ford-Fiesta-Zetec-S-14.jpg
The Citroen DS3
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/greenspagbol/citroen-ds3-1.jpg
The Mini Cooper
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/greenspagbol/mini-cooper.jpg
Thoughts, anyone? I'm torn between the first two - The Ford's a little roller skate and the Alfa is, well, an Alfa. :)
The Alfa :yup: no doubt :)

The Mini for sure, those little things got some power.

I should probably make a separate thread for this. Did it last time and it actually sorta helped make my mind up. A bit.
Alfa Pros: It's an Alfa and I've not owned one since an Alfasud years and years ago. It's damn pretty.
EDIT - Now that I remember, I had a GTV briefly 8 or 9 years ago. Beautiful car but built from wet toilet paper. :D
Alfa Cons: Nearest dealership is 40 miles away and, because it's an Alfa, I'm not wholly confident my visits will be restricted to just routine services. I know these are TOUGH. ECONOMIC. TIMES. but it's only a 1.4.
Ford Pros: It's apparently terrific fun to drive - I took the old model Zetec S to the south of France on a family holiday and didn't want to get out of it. The dealership is just down the road.
Ford Cons: It looks a bit Boy Racer-y.
Citroen Pros: It looks great. Dealership is a mile away. It's a turbo diesel which will help in these TOUGH. ECONOMIC. TIMES.
Citroen Cons: It's a diesel. The last Citroen I had (a C4, the car before the present one) had something like 5 safety recalls in 3 years of ownership.
Mini Pros: I took a Cooper round Donington race track when they were launched and don't think I've ever driven a better front wheel drive car.
Mini Cons: It's right at the top end of my budget and Mini are notoriously tight with standard features - equipping it to the standard of the other three might push me over, I'll need to research that one. Mrs T and my mum both own them so it wouldn't be a popular choice ("You've got a new one? Oh." :D) around the dinner table. At the risk of sounding like Andy Gray (and thus getting sacked from MoFo), they're a bit girly. ;)
Damn. This is harder than last time.
Should start a Poll :yup:
Tacitus

True. ;)
I've just had a conversation which went something like this: A Mini? Nah, I don't think you would want to drive one every day.
Me: You drive yours every day.
Her: Yeah, but I'm thinking of changing mine. That Citroen is a nice car.
The evil imp in me says go for one but I've been pricing it up and to get one with the same spec as the other three would cost me too much.

It's contract hire with the service option (and insurance) so after my monthly payment all I need to shell out for is fuel. Depending on the initial deposit, all the monthly figures for the 4 cars work out the same. The Fiesta is £100 deposit, for example. I had a Citroen C4 Coupe on the same deal from 05-08 (I'm locked into 3 year agreements so the car goes back whether I like it or not) and I loved it to drive.
5 safety recalls was the downside. ;)
Loner: I've had a Focus for the last 3 years. As a car it's great but I chose the wrong model (should have spent a bit more on the deposit and had something further up the range) and I don't need a car that size any more.
The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards the Ford and as an ex-employee I'm sure Henry would be proud.
Were he not dead. :p

Everytime I see peeps talking about cars I think i'm seeing algebra or something. The motor language and terms or whatever are completely lost on me:(
I'm a bit pe'd off at my dumbass friend for ruining my chances with a decent lass. He just ruined it all. If a friend is working out there you do NOT come and interrupt him for whatever reason unless he invites you. What a prick. He is socially awkward and seems a bit drunk because of his short sightedness even though he is sober. The fact that he doesn't even wear glasses (because he thinks it'll make him look like a geek) doesn't help. But yeah, he sort of spoiled my night as it was going fairly well with this one bird and another one. Then he lost his wallet which he cleverly left in his jacket while he wondered off to butt into my convo, and tried to blame ME all because I suggested the which pub to go to!!
Anyways, I won't be going out with him again. To think I paid for all the drinks too tonight. Prick, I should spark him out.
Anyways, i'm off to be guys. Have a good one :)

Today I had a slight altercation with a woman in the college car park.
Every time I walk into college I notice that people have been parking on these lines beside the disabled parking spots. A girl in my class is in a wheelchair and she said that she can't get into or out of her car if anyone parks there and once she had to wait 4 hours after class to go home because someone was parked beside her. I asked and apparently it's illegal.
Yesterday, I went around the campus in a wheelchair finding all these problems my friend would have doing simple things like having lifts that are too small, ramps too steep and having the whole college located on a massive hill.
I saw this car parked in the place it shouldn't have been coming out today, and something inside me pure snapped. I left a note on car saying "Tut tut, naughty naughty. Don't be such an *******". The owner came out and started screaming at me and I explained about the situation with wheelchair users and she told me she got permission from security. I asked security about it and they said that she was making a delivery so I asked him about wheelchair users and I said I thought it was illegal to park there. He told me that I should just concentrate more on my studies.
Then the woman came over in her car and screamed at me for being abusive and I apologised, because I knew that I should've chosen more appropriate language. I tried to explain my reasoning but she just kept calling me abusive and asked me for my name and course.
I think they both thought they were talking to a 16 year old rather than an adult.
I feel really odd about the whole situation because I knew I was in the wrong, but they were too busy screaming and shouting to see why they were in the wrong too. I actually saw a parking spot, literally in the row facing her, four down from the top. I think she was trying to scare me by taking my details but I don't know if I can call her bluff. I'll just have to wait until tomorrow.
Apparently where I live, the fine is higher for parking in the lined-off area than in the actual disabled parking spot.

As a blue badge holder, I salute you, young Miss Butterfly.
Something similar happened me a while back in Sprucefield car park:
I parked up in the disabled zone, put my blue badge on the dash and got out of the car. A man was helping a woman into a wheelchair from the car beside me and as I walked past him I heard him say "It's people like that who stop disabled people parking close to shops."
Being a mild-mannered sort of guy I walked up to him and asked him had he seen the ****ing badge on my dashboard and not everyone who carries them needs a wheelchair. He just stared uncomfortably into space so I took it as my cue to shout some more and use my mad finger pointing skillz.
It was only when I returned to my car that I noticed his car didn't have a badge displayed...
Some people. ;)

Haha I didn't know you at a blue badge Tatty and some how I knew you'd be on my side ;)
I kind of feel sorry for that guy though falling victim to your fury and 'mad finger pointing skillz'. Even thinking about it makes me shiver with fear!
Does that happen to you a lot because you're wheelchair-less?
I'm just going to be ragin' if I get punished and she can feel all high and mighty 'cus after all, what I did was inappropriate but what she did and what security allowed was illegal.
Tacitus
02-09-11, 01:50 PM
I really doubt if anything will happen to you because if she does anything, it'll just highlight that she was in the wrong to begin with.
I didn't realise until I found out I was eligible for a blue badge that it can be used in all sorts of cases and not obvious disabilities - heart trouble or asthma for example. Anything which limits how far you can walk, arthritis (and stuff) in my case.
I've only been challenged that once, probably because as my decrepitude has advanced I'm developing a wonderful limp. It needs perfecting, though, so it'll probably take me a few more years to finally get it right. ;)
My cousin is a manager at a leisure centre in Scotland and he spends a surprisingly large amount of his working day trying to clear out the disabled parking spaces populated by thoughtless, thick people. Usually driving people carriers or 4x4s.
If you can't park those things in a normal sized space, don't buy them. :D

I thought the wireless connection was dropping off on the old one so bought a wired in case something was interfering with it - the last time I made a (slightly, but for the purposes of this poor gag it'll have to do...) similar mistake was when the eldest's hamster died and I bought a gerbil (which had a set of nads on him which would be spacehopper size if scaled up to a human) as a replacement.

Petrol or diesel?
I've now got my mind set on the Citroen DS3, either the refined and sporty 1.6 16v or the noisy, asthma-enduing, smoky turbodiesel.
Important figures to consider - miles per gallon: 47 for the petrol, 70 for the diesel.
Much more important figures to consider - 0-60: 8.9 for the petrol, 11.9 for the diesel.
The metallic grey looks nice, whatever the engine. ;)

Which is more important? Telling people it can go 0-60 in 8.9 or doing it? If it's telling, get the diesel if not, get the petrol.
That said, if the numbers are important, maybe you should get one of these.

0-60 means nothing really, it's just a very broad area of comparison. I'd say the most important acceleration figures are 30-60 because most of the time you need to put the boot down is when overtaking learners and grannies on A roads. My Focus is sluggish in that regard and it's the most disappointing thing about it.
The diesel might have a little bit of oomph in that regard but I found out that the DS3's petrol engine is the same as I had in my old C4 VTR and in a smaller, lighter body. The was an excellent little motor.
Faster cars are safer than slower ones when driven responsibly. Fact. ;)
Of course, this is someone who had an Impreza for a glorious 6 months before he realised that it was either the car which had to go, or his license. It was a struggle to keep that thing at legal speeds on motorways.
The defendant claimed. ;)

They're comparing the drain of young people out of Ireland right now to the mass exodus to America and Canada during the Famine. There's just no work and if I was 10 years younger (his age) and a wee bit more mobile I'd be joining my cousin on the plane.

Showing all the decision making abilities of a nervous rabbit caught betwixt a fox and a farmer, I really need to make a decision in the next few weeks.
To summarise, I want something smaller, more economical (and environmentally chummy, natch, I'm nothing if not green *cough*) and more stylish. The Citroen DS3 seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
Until today. :p

It's a Vauxhall Astra SXi 2.0TD with 160bhp and 58mpg with something called flex floor which will make it easier to lift things out of the boot - it raises the boot floor to sill height.
Soooooo, it's not smaller, not a whole lot more economical than the Focus and certainly not more greener (sic). Result!

It's funny, but the DS3 is the Top Gear car of the year. What Car is good for the boring sensible nuts and bolts stuff, true. I had my sensible head on when I picked my last car (a Focus in Doom Blue) and have been feeling empty for the last 3 years when I drive it.
It's a good car, but I worked in the motor trade in a former life and was used to all sorts of machinery sitting on my drive. We drove whatever had tax on it, be it a 15 year old Fiesta or a Merc, a Range Rover or a manky farmer's Ford Pickup. 3 years with a box which started every morning but was completely anonymous and with an engine which wouldn't pull a soldier off yer sister (so to speak ) got to me.
With my sensible head on the DS3 (or new Fiesta) is ideal in most areas but I'll only find out about my biggest fear once I drive one in the next few weeks - ease of access. I'm 6' 1" and, lets just say, am not as mobile as I once was so getting in and out can be a bit of a problem.
Something Astra-sized will cut that problem out. It's handsome but not as cutting-edge stylish as the Citroen or even the Fiesta but, with my non-sensible head on, it's got 70bhp more than the DS3 and Fiesta diesels.
Mark - I've leased the last 2 cars and this one will be the same. Basically I'll be paying much the same for the car above (list price £21k if you were to buy it) as the bottom of the range model at 5 or 6 grand less retail price. The only explanation I can think of in these Tough Economic Times is that few people would spend their 21,000 on a mass market small-medium hatchback so there's loads of them unsold, hence the great offer on leasing.
I shall keep MoFo posted! :D

Yeah, I've been there. For me it was driving company cars for the last 7 or 8 years, 2 407s, a Mondeo, Passat and an Octavia. I'm all about comfort and space in the cabin so in some ways it was great, especially for the commute, but I always found myself wanting something a bit more gutsy for the weekends. The final straw was me pinching my mates 270 PS Golf and taking that for a spin.
I'd probably take the more spacious, practical and powerful astra. French cars have always lead the way when it comes to design, but tapering tops and jarred seating potions have corresponded. As you say yourself though, the big test is when you take a test drive. That DS3 is a great looking car, but you want to make sure it's as fun to be inside as it is to look at from the outside.

Indeed. ;) There was a DS3 parked across the street for about an hour this morning and I had as close a look at it as possible without appearing to be a thief. It's a lot smaller than I'd figured when meeting one on the road - Fiesta sized but a bit squatter. Doesn't look good in white though.
Anyway, it's a grim day here what with the blowing up of a young police officer in my home town. When I heard the news yesterday I thought it was a guy I know quite well who's been on the force for a decade (who's also a Catholic living in the same part of Omagh) but this poor guy had only just started.

Ha! I was thinking only an hour or two ago about the dream I have to buy an old V8 muscle car and drive from the East to West coast of the US. A Camaro Z28 would do. ;)
The only V8 car (I've had a couple of V8 Discos and a Grand Cherokee when i needed a towing vehicle) I've ever owned was a 1980 Porsche 928 which I bought for £5000, ran for a few years as a Sunday car and sold on for a profit. It was a lazy big beast of a thing on our roads but show it a dual carriageway and the old girl would sing!
Ah, the days when I had money. I can vaguely remember them. ;D

Sad.
I think people forget this sometimes. It's a shame the media affiliates political motivation to the attacks (though I understand why they do) when it's really a bunch of ill-rasied scum bags with nothing better to do. Most of them are as thick as two short planks and the intensity of their hatred becomes laughable when you question, for example an 18 year on the roots of his motivation, only to discover he's entirely ignorant about politics. Of course not one to prevent that fact from getting him arrested on the 12th for a public disorder offence that involved sectarian abuse. I suppose you don't have to demonstrate any intellect and understanding whatsoever to start yelling about "fenian bastards" on the street.
I always get a kick out asking folks who are wearing Rangers and Celtic shirts "who are they playing today" or "how they getting on" only to have them shrug there shoulders as if to say "F**k should I know, I don't like football!". When you look at the age of the of the offenders these days, you come to the conclusion it has to be the parents at fault who are filling their kid's heads with rubbish of letting others do that.

Anyone who's made the mistake of taking the Stranraer ferry when there's an Old Firm match on knows just how true those words are. ;)
Ok, I can see why people here support Man Utd, Liverpool etc. Our standard of football is awful, semi-pro stuff. That my dad (Stephen Hawking could probably have given him a hard time) used to play in the old B Division says it all.
Choosing to support either of the two Glasgow clubs is a whole different kettle of fish but I suppose the lines between religion and culture are especially blurry in this dysfunctional little statelet. I'm sure there are thousands of genuine Northern Irish Rangers and Celtic fans but, as you say, the mere wearing of one of their shirts is incitement to hatred in the wrong area from people who know nothing about football.
If anything, that level of shoutyness has, in my experience, become worse post ceasefire because the chances of someone actually pulling a gun on you have markedly decreased. I live in the shadow of a Catholic cathedral which is walked past by loads of young men from the biggest Protestant estate in the town on their way home from the pub at the weekend.
You'll regularly hear some winner start up singing The Sash to show how hard he is while staggering, full of Buckfast, past some empty bricks and mortar.

:D :D Have done many times. I was on the boat about 2 years ago actually coming back from Scotland. I was listening to the Arsenal game in the car as I queued to board the ferry. We lost to then newly promoted Hully City (cracker goal from Geovanni left Lehmann with a red face), depressed I thought I'd treat myself to a pint. On the HSC Stena Voyager the bar is in the middle of the ship sort of elevated with a large seating area. I sat at the bar oblivious to what was going on though I could tell from the noise the place was suddenly packed. When I finished I turned to leave and was comforted with a sea of green and white shirts. I suddenly thanked God my mum was born and raised in Islington and not Glasgow or a I might have had a Rangers shirt on that day :D. I did have to endure a bit of stick from a few lads as I left, but It was all good banter. Lucky all one following that day, but as you say, when there's an old firm game on the atmosphere is horrid. I would like to say though, I have nothing against a proper fan, it's just the other idiots I dislike.
I suppose you just have to turn a blind eye to that sort of behaviour (which is bloody annoying). When I used to go for nights out on the city side of derry I'd hear "up the RA" shouted into double figures by people who are just sitting having a drink and enjoying themselves. I always thought to myself, "why are you saying that, why is any of that crap on your mind rite now when your sitting there having fun with your mates?". It depresses you because you start to question whether this will ever fade when it's being shouted by the youth, will there misplaced bitterness transition onto their kids, history shows us it probably will.

If I were First Minister (The Tatty Socialist Party would double its membership if I could only bribe someone :D) I'd pass a law which states that everyone between the ages of 18 and 40 must spend at least a year outside NI, lest their benefits be cut.

Poor wee Rory.
It's funny about the 'kick em when they're down' mentality of some people, especially over here. I was speaking to a guy yesterday who saw Rory at George Best airport a while back and was complaining about him waiting to have his Lamborghini delivered to the door when everyone else was waiting for their taxis.
I'm sorry, but if I had a Gallardo I'd bloody well want it delivered to the door, even if I only lived a mile up the road! :D
In other news: Why oh why oh why oh why oh why do TV salesmen not listen? The interminable saga of me getting my TV replaced ended on Saturday. Or so I thought.
I'm a simple man with simple tastes when it comes to televisions - All I really wanted in the replacement set was proper 24p Blu Ray support. After watching a few movies over the weekend I suspected that this TV doesn't have it and a quick call to Samsung this morning confirmed my fears.
Now waiting for the manager to phone back where he'll probably offer me a second replacement set. I think I'm done with the whole bloody shop now and want a refund. :(

Simple tings are never simple, mon. I would just wait for the replacement set, though. Unless you feel you can get a better deal elsewhere??
I'm just chilling out right now in the library. Debating with myself on whether or not to watch Source Code before 5pm or wait until tomorrow. Might do some deadlifts before then though.

Yeah, I got it replaced. ;)
Mainly because the original telly was bought well outside their 28 day automatic refund policy so all they'd do was exchange. I could probably have argued a bit but I was so ****ed off with the whole thing I caved in and got an LG LED 42" at £50 less than the Samsung (which they did refund me, heh).
Unless I spent mega bucks (which I don't have) I wasn't gonna get exactly what I wanted but the LG has proper 24p Real Cinema mode, which I've been checking out and it's miles smoother than the Samsung but just not quite as vibrant in the colour department.
I never wanna see the inside of that store again, and I bet they feel the same about me. :D

Never even heard of Real Cinema mode before. I guess this would give the television even stronger clarity than your standard 1080p?
Did you proper have a go at them or something when you requested an exchange lol?
I'm contemplating on what to do for the rest of the day. May go back to sleep in a bit.

It basically means that Blu Rays are shown in 24 frames per second like they should be in the cinema. Most HDTVs can cope with a 24Hz signal but many of them convert it to 60Hz - Some are good at it like my first Samsung a few years ago and some are bad like the Samsung I ended up with at the weekend. The only TVs in that price range which offer 'true' 24p are the LGs and the Sonys.
It's basically a much smoother picture when the camera pans left to right but, as I said, some TVs can mask the lack of true 24p output really well. More expensive 120Hz TVs don't need any kind of special mode - as long as the refresh rate divides into 24 they don't even advertise the fact.
I was royally pissed off when I brought it back to the shop but the whole thing had worn me down so maybe I didn't stand my ground hard enough when pushing for a full refund. Don't care now, the TV does what I originally wanted - It's not perfect but it'll do. :)

I was re-reading one of my journals a minute ago when I stumbled upon the following:
"In the 3rd grade, snow and ice days were ritualized with an order of things: I would sleep to a certain hour, play Final Fantasy 7, go outside to play in the snow, come back in and have a peanut butter sandwich and Surge, and then go back to playing games. We had an insane amount of snow days, and I was sure to attain the glory of all of them. My schedule made sure of my ability to do so.
I beat Final Fantasy 7 that winter, and I'll never forget it. Mostly because I'm always trying to recreate that time frame, but it's not possible. I can only be plain ole me at the current time frame. There's no returning to the past, no reclaimed glory, and no way to experience things again. I'll just need to be happy with the experiences I can have now. The new ones. The future."

Just got a letter which reminded me why some car manufacturers have a bad reputation for reliability. I had a Citroen C4 Coupe from 05-08 and during the three years it had something like 9 safety recalls.
Lovely car but by the end I was exchanging Christmas cards with the service manager in the Dealership. It was as if I was just looking after it between trips back to the garage.
I've just had a recall letter from Citroen 3 years after I got rid of it - Maybe they just wanted me to get into double figures with issues? :D
My Focus is a bit dull but it's been comparatively bulletproof in comparison so any lingering thoughts of getting a Citroen DS3 have finally died. Vauxhall here I come!

PS+ is improving all the time. They actually seem to be listening to user comments via the official blogs and adding exclusive Beta access and game add-ons. They're also doing some free day-one offers for new games like Stacking.
You can only download what's currently on offer - previous months aren't available unless it's to re-download a game that you've got on PS+ and deleted.
The only downside for my £4 a month is that I'm always tempted to not buy something new from the store that I've had my eye on in case it turns up on PS+ free down the road.
I'm up for some SOR2 - is it one of the new PS+ offers?

Yeah mate, it was scheduled for download before the network went bust and as far as I know it'll be available to download as soon as the system comes back on, which I think will be Friday at the latest.
So will I still get to keep SOR2 after the one month free thingy ends then? I hope so. I know the PS3 network is free and all, but classic games should be free forever init.

Nope, think of PS+ as a long term rental for full games - If your membership lapses you can't access the game, if you renew it the game can be played again.
Stuff like DLC and dynamic themes are yours forever, as are games which are reduced in price for PS+ users, not completely free.
