and now, I'm hungry....
I woke up today saying to myself: I am taking today off, dammit!!! I lifted my head at 5:30 am to say goodbye to my girlfriend as she "zombied" on off to her retail Hell at Target. I awoke again at 7:30 smiling, in spite of myself, that it was a record for me to still be in bed after the sun came up. I made the mistake of turning my cell phone on and listening to my voice mail. Needless to say - so much for my day off. So here I am now just settling down and wondering how I got here. Tomorrow will most certainly be a day when my cell phone does not get turned on, if I did not need it so badly otherwise it would be at the bottom of my toilet right now swimming with the leftovers of todays breakfast.

I'm absolutely bloody knackered.
My back was so bad last night that I didn't sleep a wink so I spent some time listening to Ricky Hatton get given a boxing lesson by a deeply unpleasant American gentleman, began writing a novel (it'll be ace, trust me!) and wondering quite why people go to church at 7am on a Sunday morning. Is God even up at that time? ;)
Edit - Why the hell did I write "7am in the morning"? I hate people who do that.
It's lack of sleep...
getting ready to take my friend to the airport :)
Taking a small squirt gun to all the kids already asleep or getting ready to go to sleep and smacking them in the face with water. They were all so shocked, I was all so laughing my arse off.

Hey, you too? Fantastic! We can talk in the secret language of literary criticism.
Modernism produced some of the objectively best literature of the past few centuries. Conrad, Elliot (I want Preludes etched on my gravestone) and Joyce being some of the favourites I can recall without sifting through my notes. But I still have a softer spot for the European renaissance, there's something about the vibrancy and life of the period that produced Machiavelli and Hobbes and Marlowe that awes me. I mean, it was the dawn of the modern world as we understand it, the start of the great humanist revolution and so much of that distilled down into the art of the period that you feel intellectually refreshed just by browsing it.
Anyway, I had better get off. Slave Narratives at half one with Doctor Dave. Remind me to beat you up for some dissertation advice next year.

If you're stuck on anything, give me a shout and I'll see if I can dredge up any memory of it. My final two year's modules were (I think) Modernism, Shakespeare, Modern European Lit, Etymology, Victorian Lit, 20th Century Poetry, Middle English and ... ermmm ... something else.

Ah man, I'd have loved to have been doing university back in 1994. No tuition, grants, spending weekends getting mashed at raves, degrees actually being worth the time invested &c.
Anyway, we don't have any of those on the syllabus anymore. Guess you're going to be as much use to me as an actual Humanities degree is. Nuts.
For those interested: I'm rolling a cigarette, reading Private Eye and trying to decided whether I have a cold or the 'flu. Well, trying to convince myself it's the latter so I can spend the next few days in bed.

Ha ha! True, that's pretty much what it was like. That I went to Uni in the North West meant that I was in easy distance of a Stone Roses and Happy Mondays infatuated Madchester only added to the fun.

Feel free to substitute a bottle of brandy for the wine. It might work even faster...
Failing that, you could always try some of my medication - I gave a tablet to a friend of mine who'd hurt their back a few weeks ago. They went straight to bed and were out for the count until 4 the next afternoon - their work was phoning repeatedly because they thought she'd had an accident!

I'm liking it (the book), but of the Austen books I've read so far this one is my least favorite: 1) Mansfield Park, 2) Pride & Prejudice, 3) Sense & Sensibility (gotta check out her later novels like Emma). I'm looking forward to what Ang Lee does with it. I also have been digging Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet very much lately so I expect to like the movie when I do get around to it.
About a month ago I saw an adaptation of Mansfield Park on tv that was just awful. They turned Fanny into a (ever-so-mildly) sassy flirt!

That's pretty interesting and I'm actually surprised you picked up on it from the examples I posted. Hell, you can tell I was distracted with my problem. Happy Anniversary, woman! Thanks for the *If you could have* offer Caity, but you best get to the store, before you starve to death. Thanks for the comment, Nebs!
So yeah Gummo, breaks are rare, with my luck. I usually just make fun of the bulk of my bad luck. It is daily, and I'm not whistling Dixie. People messing up my accounts, something or other. Always something I have to fix, get back in order. Things forever break around here, as well. I can't tell you how many computer parts I have been through in the past 2-3 years, but there have been 3-4 vacuums, 1 shampooer, 1 microwave, 1 big screen TV, 1 receiver for the system, 1 dual head tape player, 2-3 DVD players, 5 or so VCRs, a truck, a car, and now the jeep, although that is starting to look hopeful *knock on wood*, and so on. I am sure I am forgetting something. So between people forever ****ing me over, and things breaking, etc, etc, etc . . . I am surprised I am still sane, although I usually laugh about a lot of these things anymore. Maybe that's a sign of something. :p One friend had said, "You are the unluckiest bitch I have ever met. How can you be so unlucky?" Then my other friend, with not such a funny comment, actually said, "I see what you go through, usually on a daily basis, and I can't help but wonder how come you haven't killed yourself yet!"

I've just had guy in doing an asbestos survey and, when he saw the cupboards full of DVDs, announced that he's a screenwriter who's had a movie at the Derry film festival (a pretty good Independent gig) and was an extra in Breakfast on Pluto.
The bombing scene, if anyone's interested. I, apparently, wasn't interested enough - I told him that I owned the DVD and he just stood there, probably waiting for me to stick it in my player and fast forward to his moment of glory.
I'm afraid I don't play ball like that. Nice bloke, though. ;)

To be honest, he caught me at a bad time. I've had a bugger of a fortnight pain-wise and had just got back from a drive to see my granny (which takes it out of me at the best of times).

This is almost true yes Mr Linespalsy. Crane Flies are called Flying Daddy Long Legs whilst the spider is just known as Daddy Long Legs...the Daddy Long Legs spider that is, don;t actually know their real name.
Obviously theyre different creatures but i think as most people just want to kill Flying Daddy Longlegs and get them out the way, they don't realy care what theyre called. In October time we get hundreds of them all over the place. Theyre SO annoying when they fly in your room and get stuck in a light fitting.

Thanks. Harvestmen are arachnids but actually they're not spiders, they're opilionids. Differences include (I learned this from what I read yesterday, I'm no expert) fewer eyes, the two body segments are fused together (so they lack that trim hourglass figure that spiders have) and they chew their food rather than spitting digestive fluid onto or into it. Oh yeah, and they're omnivores. They've also survived the various ecological catastrophes of the last 400 million+ years without adapting very much (or at least not in ways that the fossil record can reveal).
I actually kind of like Crane Flies. At least the ones I've come across, which fly around but at least have the common decency not to land on you (unlike Mosquitos and House Flies).
Oh yes, and speaking of Mosquitos, there's a horror movie called Mansquito. Just to bring that to everyone's attention.

Ahhh Christmas! The season of getting drunk on cheap sherry and watching as your teenaged cousin beats you at Trivial Pursuit (I swear to God it was fixed), auntie Flo has an adverse reaction to the sprouts causing the dog to pass out from sheer embarrassment and you find you've collected 3 presents of garish knitwear, the only saving grace being that they're far too small and would probably combust when faced with a spin cycle (though the ensuing static electricity would power a small African village for a fortnight).

I hope it's not Korean nursery rhymes. I once looked at a German or Russian nursery rhyme book that basically showed grownups turning into monsters if the kids didn't behave themselves.... if memory serves, one story had a 'nanny' who would cut off your thumb if you didn't stop sucking it....

Thinking how poor the aforementioned party was. Highlights were catching up with people, disconnecting the music and watching the first half hour of Predator.
Hoping tomorrow night goes better.
Listening to "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn" by the White Stripes and catching up on the MoFoin'.

Checking out forums, being bored and thinking about the mountain of DVDs I'm going to try and get through these holidays (when I'm not trying to finish reading Ulysses or finish playing Super Mario 64).

Right now I'm trying to finish waking up... I've been cat napping off and on all day and am feeling a bit zombie-fide now....

I know that it was sexist and that being a minority sucked, but I wish I could go back in time just a little to the early 1960's to shop.
